Great Train eXpress

Great Train Express is a planned higher-speed commuter rail network in the Seoul Capital Area project consisting of three separate lines, named GTX A, GTX B and GTX C, and scheduled for completion in 2025.[1][2][3]
It is a similar system to RER in Paris, France, BART in San Francisco, USA, Crossrail in London, UK, and Tsukuba Express in Tokyo, Japan.
The first proposal of GTX was made by Moon Soo Kim, during his campaign for Governor of Gyeonggi Province in 2010. Another candidate, Si Min Yoo criticized that this plan is not realizable and will make the province just a bed-town of Seoul even if it could be built. After Kim was elected, the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs of Korea officially included GTX to the High Speed Rail Development Plan in September 2010.
GTX A
[edit]The line has been approved and is scheduled to start construction in late 2018. This plan has been passed the preliminary feasibility study by Ministry of Economy and Finance(MOSF) in November 8, 2017 with the benefit-cost ratio of 1.11. Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport(MOLIT) officially announced the basic plan and the request for proposal in December 2017. A consortium led by Shinhan Bank was selected as a preferred bidder for building GTX line A by MOLIT on April 26, 2018 ,[4] beating the consortium of Hyundai E&C. The main construction company of the selected consortium is Daelim Industrial. The negotiations between the consortium and MOLIT started in May, 2018. The project cost is expected to reach at 3.64 trillion KRW and the planned length is 83.1km. This line will run from Paju in the north of Gyeonggi province to Dongtan southern Gyeonggi province serving major centres in Seoul. Trains will operate at up to 180km/h on this line, which is the first phase of the three-line GTX network. The line is expected to attract average daily ridership of around 300,000 passengers, eliminating 50,000 car trips from the highway network by 2025. An extension line to the north from Ilsan to Paju is also being considered. [1] The section from Suseo Station to Dongtan Station has been built by Korea Rail Network Authority and is being used by a regional high speed rail service, SRT, since December 2016. The section between Samseong Station and Suseo Station is already under construction, and service is expected to start between Samseong Station and Dongtan Station as early as 2023. MOLIT and the Seoul Metropolitan Government has announced the master plan for the Yeongdong-daero underground complex project on July 1, 2017. Located between Samseong station and Bongeunsa Station under the Yeongdong-daero, this underground complex will connect Line 2 and 9 of the subway through a direct transfer passageway, while serving as a junction of five train lines including KTX, GTX-A, and GTX-C. GTX B
[edit]This line will connect the Songdo International Business District (IBD), Incheon and Maseok station, Namyangju-si. The project cost is expected to reach at 5.9 trillion KRW. The initial plan for GTX B line was from Songdo IBD to Cheongnyangni station.[1] This plan was reviewed through the preliminary feasibility study by MOSF in Feb. 2014. In the study, the benefit-cost ration was only 0.33 and it was not recommended for a further process. MOLIT has updated the plan with the line extension to Maseok station and the new plan is under review by MOSF from August 2017. In November 2018, mayors of 12 local governments that have stations of this line within their boundaries openly asked for an exemption of the review of the preliminary feasibility study by MOSF. They claimed that this project has a significant uncountable impact for the balanced development of the Seoul metropolitan area. [5]

GTX C
[edit]This line will connect the Deokjeong station, Yangju-si and Suwon station, Suwon-si. The project cost is expected to reach at 4.05 trillion KRW. The initial plan for GTX C line was from Uijeongbu station, Uijeongbu-si to Geumjeong station, Gunpo-si.[1] This plan was reviewed through the preliminary feasibility study by MOSF in Feb. 2014. In the study, the benefit-cost ration was only 0.66 and it was not recommended for a further process. MOLIT has updated the plan with the line extension to Deokjeong station to the north and Suwon station to the south. To reduce the project cost, a section from Deokjeong station to Dobongsan station shares with the existing Gyeongwon Line and a section from Geumjeong station to Suwon station shares with the existing Gyeongbu Line. The new plan is under review by MOSF from January 2016.
