Kausikan Sivalingam (Tamil: கௌசிகன் சிவலிங்கம்; born 16 May 1991, Warendorf) is a German music composer and sound engineer, known largely for his work in the Kollywood Film Industry, having worked with renowned music directors such as Yuvan Shankar Raja and Vijay Antony. He has also been involved in several mixing and mastering projects from around the globe. In addition to this, he found fame through his own independent releases. One such composition, the single "Kangal Rendum Pesuthey" [3], won him a regional and international fan base.

Early life[edit]

Kausikan is the son of well-known Tamil authors Raj Siva and Nimmi Siva. Kausi has one elder sister, Yalini. His interest in music began early in life, at the age of four, when he was already doing renderings of popular Tamil songs of his day. He did his schooling at Laurentianum Gymnasium Warendorf. He graduated in the year 2011 with a degree in Sound Engineering from the SAE Institute in Köln. In his teenage years, he was part of a band called Thirumalai who mainly did covers of Tamil songs.[4]

Career[edit]

Early Success[edit]

He made his musical debut with an independent composition "Penn Maaney" which opened doors for him in Kollywood and he was featured in Ananda Vikatan magazine at the age of 16, as a young and upcoming music composer and sound engineer.

In 2009 he composed and produced two singles for Lady Kash and Krissy "It’s your time" and "Wherever you are".[5] He mixed these at his Home Studio in Germany. On the back of this success, in 2011 he got the opportunity to work as an assistant sound engineer with Yuvan Shankar Raja on Avan Ivan, Vettai and the blockbuster Mankatha.

Kangal Rendum Pesuthey and Other successes[edit]

In November of 2014, he made a big breakthrough with his own independent release titled "Kangal Rendum Pesuthey"[7] which was composed, produced, mixed and mastered by him. The song was an internet sensation and continues to accumulate viewership with over 4.3 million views on YouTube as of May 2017.[8]

One online reviewer called the song a ‘soothing music that grabs your attention the first time you listen to it, taking the audience on a journey of love and pain’. The song was a true collaboration of European artists from across Switzerland, France and Germany.[9] The video was shot in Switzerland evident in its stunning visuals. The two vocalists in this song were 2015 Airtel Super Singer finalist Nerujan and the title winner of the 2014 Airtel Super Singer season, Diwakar, which made this song even more special.[10] [11] Kausi himself appears in a brief yet important cameo in the video. The song tells a poignant story of infidelity and all the passion and heartbreak that ensues as a consequence of that.[12] In 2015, Kausikan received two Saathanai Thamizha Awards for the categories Best Music Director and Best Video Song.[13]

He followed up his "Kangal Rendum Pesuthey" success with yet another single, the much awaited "Irudhi" voiced by Diluckshan and produced by DP26.[14] "Irudhi" (last/final), as the title suggests, depicts an issue that plagues a lot of modern societies, drunk driving.

Soon after, he also released "Kaithi" sung by Ram Agarathi featuring Inno Genga, who has gone on to find success working with Anirudh Ravichander. The executive producer on this song was Arya Canada Inc.[15] "Kaithi", a prisoner of love, presents the complicated and controversial taboo of forbidden love.

All three songs were featured on Sun Music and SS Music TV channels in India and Indiaglitz and Raaga Web Pages.[16] [17] [18]

His continued success landed him a spot in the music and sound department of the Got to Dance program in Germany in 2015 with Palina Rojinski, Marvin A. Smith and Anton Zetterholm as judges. The program aired in the Prosieben channel and is one of the most popular shows in Germany.[19]

In the same year, Tha Mystro dropped his independent album named Vaalibam, which was also fully sound engineered by Kausikan.[20] [21]

The year 2015 also saw Kausikan perform at the Vijay Awards launch at the SSE Arena in Wembley. His second concert appearance that year was in Montreal at the Cine Theatre for Ram Agarathi's album launch and the Laila Majnu grand finale. He ended the year on a high note as he went on to perform at Anirudh’s Live in Concert at Toronto in December.

In 2016 he got the opportunity and the privilege to do mixing and mastering for the Kamal Haasan Anthem, 62nd birthday tribute to Ulaganayagan by Nishanlee.[22] [23] [24]

Commercial success[edit]

2012[edit]

Kausikan was the sound engineer on several of Yuvan Shankar Raja's blockbuster albums like Billa II, Aadhi Bhagavan, Moondru Per Moondru Kaadhal and Raja Natwarlal.[25] [26] [27] [28] [29]

Yuvan Shankar Raja signed Kausi as the sound engineer for yet another blockbuster starring Ajith Kumar, Billa II. This gangster film was directed by Chakri Toleti with soundtrack and background score composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja and lyrics by Na. Muthukumar. All the mixing was done at NHow Studios in Berlin Germany and the mastering was done at Master Lab, also in Germany. The soundtrack was launched under the label of Sony music.[30] [31] For his work on this film, Kausikan received the 2012 Mirchi Music Awards South for Best Sound Mixing of the Year, Category: Technical Sound Engineer Award for the song ‘Gangster’.[32] [33] [34] [35] [36]

He teamed up with Yuvan Shankar Raja once again for Aadhi Baghavan, a neo-noir action film directed by Ameer Sultan starring Jeyam Ravi. The final mixing was done at NHow Studios in Germany in late July. The Soundtrack album was launched at the Powerade Centre in Brampton Ontario under the Gemini Audio label, on 6th of October 2012, marking the first ever audio launch event held in North America for a Tamil film.[37] [38]

2013[edit]

The winning combination continued in 2013 as Yuvan Shankar Raja and Kausikan came together once again to score the Tamil romance film, Moondru Per Moondru Kaadhal, directed by Vasanth. The film starred Arjun, Cheran and Vimal in lead role. Na. Muthukumar’s lyrics brought to life with Yuvan’s music resulted in great critical and commercial success. The hit song "Unakkaagave Uyir Vaazhgiren" was the first ever dubstep song in Tamil cinema. Final mixing was done by Kausi in Berlin.[39]

2014[edit]

Yuvan Shankar Raja brought Kausi on board his team once again, this time for a Bollywood film, Raja Natwarlal. The Crime Drama, directed by Kunal Deshmukh, marked Yuvan’s debut in Hindi and in the Bollywood industry. It was also Kausikan’s first venture into the Mumbai-based film industry. The film starred Emraan Hashmi in the lead role. Mixing was done in Berlin by Kausi and audio launched under the UTV label.[40]

2017[edit]

After a small hiatus, Kausikan returned to the fore with a blockbuster project. He teamed up with Vijay Antony of Pichaikkaran and Naan fame, on his latest film Yaman, a Tamil language political drama written and directed by Jeeva Shankar. Large part of the mixing and mastering happened in Vijay Antony’s studio in Chennai with Kausikan as the lead sound engineer. Kausi met Vijay Antony at a Mastering Seminar in Hamburg in a chance encounter which led to them collaborating in Vijay’s next film. The soundtrack was successfully released under the Lyca Music label.[41]

Looking ahead[edit]

Kausi is currently producing several new singles that he has composed in collaboration with singers Karthik, Haricharan, Gana Bala, Rahul Nambiar and several other popular artists from the Tamil film industry. Additionally, he is working with several artists globally on many independent productions including musicians from Malaysia, Canada and Europe. They are expected to be released sometime next year.

He recently acquired the very elite SSL AWS 924 mixing console for his newly established studio in Düsseldorf. This console has features that are perfectly suited for busy production and recording studios. Kausi purchased it in view of his upcoming projects that are bound to keep him on a tight production schedule.
