Unsure about the rules here
Hi. On 22 Feb you blocked User:Kahn and Averill (block log entry). I had reported this one at UAA but the block log entry also mentions uw-spamublock. Is this person allowed to create a new account and edit with it, or is that socking? Because User:Morriskahn (not pinging) is doing just that, spamming for the same book publisher (contributions here). Please could you act or advise? Thanks. --Stfg (talk) 21:44, 1 March 2015 (UTC)
- Hello @Stfg:, no they are definitely not allowed to just create a new account. If they are the same person they have to put an unblock request on the talk page of the blocked account and convince an administrator that they know what they did was wrong and explain what type of contributions they would like to make. An uninvolved administrator would then make the decision if they can be unblocked. If you think that they're the same user, I would suggest raising an sockpuppet investigation, an uninvolved administrator can then check this.--5 albert square (talk) 22:09, 1 March 2015 (UTC)
- Done. Many thanks. --Stfg (talk) 00:33, 2 March 2015 (UTC)
WP:SOAPS and families
Hi :) First of all, let me say I think you've been doing some great work and don't want to take anything away from that. However, you recently reverted some of my edits citing WP:SOAPS, making the comment 'read it' in your summary. I can assure you I have read this policy, including an archived discussion on this subject, and don't believe my edits went against it in any way.
This policy states that distant and/or unimportant relatives should not be included. It says nothing about whether a relative played a particular 'role' to someone - yet you reverted my inclusion of Ian Beale as Phil Mitchell's stepson on the basis that 'he never played a stepfather role to Ian' citing this policy as your justification. With all due respect, you cannot cite something as a breach in policy if it isn't in the policy in the first place.
Deciding whether someone played the 'role' of a step-parent is very much open to opinion and conjecture. What is fact is that Phil was married to Ian's mother and was therefore his stepfather. I think you would have great difficulty arguing that Ian is an 'unimportant' relative too. Their feud, which has regularly generated storylines for nearly 20 years, came about entirely because of Phil and Kathy's marriage and how both men perceived the other's treatment of her. Phil and Ben have an additional family connection through Ben, a regular character for nearly nine years now on and off. Phil is also aware that Kathy is still alive - this is likely to be a major storyline later this year. To remove Ian from a list of Phil's relatives whilst leaving in Clive Mitchell - a one-episode character from 2002 - is absurd. Is he really more important just because Phil wasn't involved in Ian's upbringing? On the basis of whether someone 'played that role' you'd have to remove Nadia from the list of Phil's wives - it was a marriage of convenience and they never lived together; easy to argue she never played the role of wife.
Similarly, you reverted my addition of Nick Cotton as Jim Branning's stepson on the basis that 'they never shared a scene', again citing WP:SOAPS. Apart from the fact that this isn't true - they shared several scenes during Nick's 2000 - 2001 stint - there is nothing in WP:SOAPS stating characters have to have shared a scene. Although John Bardon is dead Jim is still alive, albeit off-screen, and Nick has been living with Dot until very recently. He is a major part of Dot's life and therefore a significant relative of Jim's.
On your third revert - removing Karen Wicks from the list of Pat Butcher's grandchildren - I can see why you did that. After all, Karen was never actually featured in the show. However, I would argue that a grandchild is a close and important relative; David lived with Pat for three years on the show, so it seems logical to list his children under Pat's relatives. I would look at it from the point of whether there is a compelling reason NOT to include Karen. Yes, Pat never met her, but discovering you had a grandchild who died before you could ever meet them would be a big thing for anyone. (I speak from experience as the same thing happened to my grandmother.)
As I say, I absolutely don't want to take anything away from the good work you're doing, or to criticise the policy. (For example, if we were to list Bert and Ernie Moon as Pat's step-great-great-nephews things really would be going too far.) I just want to make sure the policy is applied correctly and not by broad interpretation. Smurfmeister (talk) 12:39, 3 March 2015 (UTC)
- I must admit I forgot that Jim and Nick shared a scene together. It's been so many years ago. However I don't remember Jim or Phil behaving like stepfather figures to Nick or Ian. That's why I reverted your edits--5 albert square (talk) 20:38, 3 March 2015 (UTC)
Hatem El-Nashar
I have unblocked him since he was using his real name, which is never a violation of the username policy, even if he was promoting himself (which he has agreed not to do in the future, and I like his proposal for what he will edit). When blocking such users in the future, just do it for spam or COI and not the username. Thank you. Daniel Case (talk) 15:12, 3 March 2015 (UTC)
- @Daniel Case: I didn't block for the username. I blocked just for promotional edits. Looking at the templates, we only have spamublock and softerblock and the latter is for a username so that's why I didn't use it. They're not spamming so I couldn't choose that one. I chose the best one I could find--5 albert square (talk) 20:31, 3 March 2015 (UTC)
- Yeah, I've had that problem too. You can pick "block" and go from there but a lot of times people don't want to do it manually. The thing to remember is that the block-page dropdown list only chooses the template for what the editor sees when they try to edit ... you can always put the template for what you really mean to say on their talk page. Daniel Case (talk) 22:35, 3 March 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for the explanation. I'll personalise it more next time :)--5 albert square (talk) 22:50, 3 March 2015 (UTC)

Hi,
As you're a wonderful admin user, and you joined way back, I wanted to ask you can you block this anomoys user, he keeps editing these pages that are incorrect. Would you please block him. Thank You Kris, Victoria = 5 (talk) 06:22, 10 March 2015 (UTC)

- I'm curious why the above user in these edits faked the addition of a Good Friend Award to his own talk page as though it came from User:OnlyOneRaider. As we can see from the edit history at Kris's talk page OnlyOneRaider never added it. The user also refactored the warning from @Lightsout: in the same batch by removing the info icon. - The user has been apprised that talk page comments go on the bottom of talk pages, and they seem to be deliberately ignoring this [1][2][3][4]. This, coupled with the fabricated Good Friend award, the inaccurate explanations, the bizarre notes on AmaryllisGardener's talk page and on Amaury's talk page might tend to suggest someone editing in bad faith, perhaps with a little flair for trolling. User:Bryce Carmony being WP:POINTY?
He's been trying to merge every "Criticism of..." article into that article, even when the "Criticism of..." article is longer than the main one. As the last admin to block him, could you look at this? Origamiteⓣⓒ 21:54, 12 March 2015 (UTC)
Hello 5 Albert square, allow me to clarify a few things. I'm not actually trying to merge all "Criticism of" articles. some articles make a lot of sense to have criticism for example "Film criticism" or "Literary criticism". Makes total sense. I am only proposing mergers for articles that have divisions based on POV. for example Criticism of Windows is just Windows but with a different POV. In the name of NPOV I am not moving or merging any content I am just starting the process and recommending merges on a few articles. if you have any questions I'm happy to answer them. Bryce Carmony (talk) 21:58, 12 March 2015 (UTC)
- OK, I will keep an eye on this to make sure it doesn't go pointy :)--5 albert square (talk) 22:48, 12 March 2015 (UTC)
thanks 5, I'm not looking for trouble I'm just trying to help out. have a good weekend.Bryce Carmony (talk) 00:29, 13 March 2015 (UTC)
- Ok, that works. Thanks. Origamiteⓣⓒ 04:43, 13 March 2015 (UTC)
- Well, he's starting to get POINTy again. Read this first, where he says:
so you're going to say that the subject of "Criticism of Liberalism" is "criticism" so if I were to go to Criticism of Liberalism and add Main article: Criticism you would support that? since the main article is criticism, libertarianism is just the adjective and not the subject.
and then look at this this edit. He's making the point that a "criticism of X" article is actually about criticism rather than X, so he's putting in a main article link to Criticism. Sheer bad behaviour, no other explanation for it. andy (talk) 16:43, 14 March 2015 (UTC)
- In case he reverts it before you've had a chance to see it, you might like to be aware of this personal attack on you. andy (talk) 00:15, 15 March 2015 (UTC)
- I'm going to step back now but keep watching-I think that'll settle things down a bit. Origamiteⓣⓒ 01:59, 15 March 2015 (UTC)
I asked Andy what the topic of that article was. he told me it was criticism, not libertarianism. It's hard to tell what he wants, he says" the subject is criticism not libertarianism" but if you mark the main article "criticism" he says " it's libertarianism not criticism". I'm not being pointy, and I don't think I've disrupted anything. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bryce Carmony (talk • contribs) 12:47, 16 March 2015 (UTC)

- Hey 5as, could you take a look at the ANI I'm in, I'm trying to act in good faith, to apologize for any offense, but few people seem to be interested in discussing NPOV, or accepting my apologies, any feedback you can provide would be appreciated. I don't see why wikipedia has to be so hostile, when someone say " we can change Originally Written to Written" and it escalates to a 30 day ban, to me that seems hostile. when proposing a handful of mergers about an important topic, the same hostile person proposes a 6 month ban. I don't feel like I'm being uncivil towards anyone here, I just don't like the hostility. Bryce Carmony (talk) 19:45, 16 March 2015 (UTC)

Bryce Carmony again!
He's back, POINTy as ever. I've just given him a 4im warning here which you might care to read. Cheers. Andyjsmith (talk) 08:55, 26 March 2015 (UTC)
- First off let me say that 1 - I assume good faith in andy, and I don't know what he is upset about. I have voted for either deleting an article that is a poor article and doesn't serve the user ( the people we are here to serv ) or have it be a redirect. this is known as Approval voting. where everyone gets a single vote and can vote for as many things as they want 1 time. if you insist on having an article Google and censorship and someone links Censorship of Google Search to that article, you can't call that "pointy" that's just using links the way links are used to connect articles that are connected. How does that make the article weaker? when I added a link to 2014 China censorship of Google services at Google and censorship that was to compliment the link there ( one of only two ) Internet censorship in China. I have proposed that a single article is bad. an article that serves as a glorified redirect and is not up to the caliber of what Wikipedia readers deserve. If you think those articles shouldn't be linked together feel free to say so, start a discussion in the talk page ( something you never seem to do instead you just try to have a closed door discussion with an admin and avoid consensus and good faith ). I asked you if you thought this article was good enough for our users and you refuse to answer that. I edit for the users, who do you edit for? Bryce Carmony (talk) 09:02, 26 March 2015 (UTC)
BTW I posted here before he accused me on the AfD page of lying, which unfortunately makes my point. Andyjsmith (talk) 09:19, 26 March 2015 (UTC)
- If you say that I have voted twice that is a lie, I have only voted Once. You might be using a plurality vote, but I am using an approval vote. If you want to vote for two outcomes ( for example, if you voted Keep or redirect ) that would be a single vote. if you are going to say " you have voted twice" that is a lie. I have voted a single time for two outcomes ( to delete or redirect ) I'm not sure why you dislike approval voting It's a powerful way to give as much power to the voter as possible. If the consensus is reached to keep the article we can keep the article and try and improve it. Bryce Carmony (talk) 09:23, 26 March 2015 (UTC)
Latest: There may be no need to bother with this. He messed around with the article that's the subject of the AfD, reintroducing a spurious link, so I've reported him at ARV. Let's see how it goes. Andyjsmith (talk) 10:02, 26 March 2015 (UTC)
- I've created a discussion section in the article and if you would care to explain why you believe the link to be "spurius" I would value your feedback andy. Bryce Carmony (talk) 10:50, 26 March 2015 (UTC)
Or maybe not: My report and a couple of others were deleted as having been outstanding for too long. Meh. Never mind, the threat made him undo his dodgy edit so that's progress of a kind. Andyjsmith (talk) 15:33, 26 March 2015 (UTC)

Elm Guest House child abuse scandal
Please revert your full protection of the page. The page has been edited for many months by a number of established and conscientious editors. The only current dispute is a very minor one, over whether two individuals named in the article should also be named in the lede. I repeat, it is a minor - and inconsequential - disagreement between one or two editors. There are much more important matters - like this - that need to be included in the article, but until the level of protection is reduced that cannot be done. FYI
Blocking 43.224.156.79 for three months is excessive. The IP of that user will have changed before a week is over, leaving random other people to get hit by the block. Thanks. Reaper Eternal (talk) 18:48, 16 April 2015 (UTC)

Allan Gray
I was searching for the Allan Gray's (South African investment company) wikipedia site and I eventually came across a page that said you deleted it back in 2011. I was wondering why you did this and if it were possible to restore it. Surely people have looked for it in the last 4 or so years?
105.210.64.213 (talk) 07:51, 21 April 2015 (UTC)
- Hi
- It doesn't matter how many people have searched for it. If it fails Wikipedia's notability guidelines then it cannot be included in the encyclopaedia.--5 albert square (talk) 20:15, 21 April 2015 (UTC)
Please note: "When evaluating the notability of organizations or products, please consider whether they have had any significant or demonstrable effects on culture, society, entertainment, athletics, economies, history, literature, science, or education. Large organizations and their products are likely to have more readily available verifiable information from reliable sources that provide evidence of notability."
- From the Notability Guidelines page.
I am lead to believe that you do not live in South Africa. Allan Gray is the second largest investment company in South Africa (only overtaken recently by Coronation) To say that an investment company with billions of Rands in assets that thousands of South Africans are investing has no notable effect on society is somewhat outlandish. Please help me to understand your stance on this topic by elaborating further. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 105.210.64.213 (talk) 08:03, 22 April 2015 (UTC)
- Hello, I'm afraid I can't simply because I don't remember the page. As good as my memory is, you have said it was deleted 4 years ago. All I can tell you is that it would have been deleted because, at the point of deletion it failed our guidelines. Sorry.--5 albert square (talk) 09:21, 22 April 2015 (UTC)

Hey. Could you possibly delete the Phoebe Nicholson redirect (that I created), so I can move my draft over to that page? - JuneGloom07 Talk 23:46, 21 April 2015 (UTC)
- Done and I also moved your page over.--5 albert square (talk) 03:26, 22 April 2015 (UTC)
- Thank you! I would have left the link to the draft too, but I thought you were still online, so I was gonna move it after you deleted the redirect. - JuneGloom07 Talk 11:53, 22 April 2015 (UTC)

A user you blocked evading a block
Hi. You blocked Mriduls.sharma for personal attacks (granted Favonian more recently revoked talk page access, but you made the actual block), and 117.197.156.226 admitted to being that user with this edit to the DR/N (look near the bottom of the request). Couple of page moves.
I don't suppose you could move Tess Bateman (Casualty) and Charlie Fairhead (Casualty) to Tess Bateman and Charlie Fairhead. I guess the editor thought disambiguation was the right way to get around redirects. - JuneGloom07 Talk 00:01, 27 April 2015 (UTC)

Clue Bot NG
Thanks You! I will try and not "vandalise" again. I am so sorry.
Nothard Nothard (talk) 23:58, 5 May 2015 (UTC)
- Hi Nothard,
- No worries, like I said on ClueBot NG's page your edit is not vandalism, hence why @Materialscientist: has removed ClueBot NG's warnings and replaced them with a welcome message. As ClueBot is not a human it cannot read your edits so it works on probability, part of your edit was in CAPS so the bot has picked it up as possible vandalism due to shouting. I'm glad the bot's warnings haven't scared you off though as I noticed that you also edited one of The X Factor's many pages and that happens to be my favourite reality TV series. My favourite judge has to be Simon Cowell :)--5 albert square (talk) 00:31, 6 May 2015 (UTC)
- Hi 5 Albert Square,
Yes, I do really like reality TV series. I am british, so quite like the british versions! My favourite judge is Louis Walsh, he has been on the X Factor UK for every series! The US, I also quite like. Cheers
