New Page Review - newsletter No.2

Hello Mdann52,
A HUGE backlog

We now have 817 New Page Reviewers!
Most of us requested the user right at PERM, expressing a wish to be able to do something about the huge backlog, but the chart on the right does not demonstrate any changes to the pre-user-right levels of October.

Hitting 17,000 soon

The backlog is still steadily growing at a rate of 150 a day or 4,650 a month. Only 20 reviews a day by each reviewer over the next few days would bring the backlog down to a managable level and the daily input can then be processed by each reviewer doing only 2 or 3 reviews a day - that's about 5 minutes work!
It didn't work in time to relax for the Xmas/New Year holidays. Let's see if we can achieve our goal before Easter, otherwise by Thanksgiving it will be closer to 70,000.

Second set of eyes

Remember that we are the only guardians of quality of new articles, we alone have to ensure that pages are being correctly tagged by non-Reviewer patrollers and that new authors are not being bitten.

Abuse

This is even more important and extra vigilance is required considering Orangemoody, and

  1. this very recent case of paid advertising by a Reviewer resulting in a community ban.
  2. this case in January of paid advertising by a Reviewer, also resulting in a community ban.
  3. This Reviewer is indefinitely blocked for sockpuppetry.

Coordinator election

Kudpung is stepping down after 6 years as unofficial coordinator of New Page Patrolling/Reviewing. There is enough work for two people and two coords are now required. Details are at NPR Coordinators; nominate someone or nominate yourself. Date for the actual suffrage will be published later.

New Page Review - newsletter No.3

Hello Mdann52,

Voting for coordinators has now begun HERE and will continue through/to 23:59 UTC Monday 06 March. Please be sure to vote. Any registered, confirmed editor can vote. Nominations are now closed.

Still a MASSIVE backlog

We now have 817 New Page Reviewers but despite numerous appeals for help, the backlog has NOT been significantly reduced.
If you asked for the New Page Reviewer right, please consider investing a bit of time - every little helps preventing spam and trash entering the mainspace and Google when the 'NO_INDEX' tags expire.

Tools

Do you remember the shortnames tool, which is listed as being maintained by you and Coren?

It needs to be restarted. Thanks. DS (talk) 20:15, 27 March 2017 (UTC)

I'm aware. I currently have no access to my tool labs account to do this, so I'll do this as soon as i can get back in. Mdann52 (talk) 20:17, 27 March 2017 (UTC)
Most kind. Any idea when? DS (talk) 00:14, 29 March 2017 (UTC)
Hello hello. DS (talk) 18:29, 19 April 2017 (UTC)
Good to see you're active again. Could I maybe have an ETA? DS (talk) 22:54, 7 May 2017 (UTC)
@DragonflySixtyseven: Managed to recover my access to labs, so should all be running again. Sorry for the delay - I've been extremely busy IRL over the past few months, so this has unfortunately taken a back foot. If there's anything that needs doing with the tool, drop me a line - I haven't reviewed the code for a while, but I'm sure I can give it a jab! Mdann52 (talk) 21:55, 8 May 2017 (UTC)

New Page Review - Newsletter No.4

Hello Mdann52,

Since rolling out the right in November, just 6 months ago, we now have 817 reviewers, but the backlog is still mysteriously growing fast. If every reviewer did just 55 reviews, the 22,000 backlog would be gone, in a flash, schwoop, just like that!

But do remember: Rather than speed, quality and depth of patrolling and the use of correct CSD criteria are essential to good reviewing. Do not over-tag. Make use of the message feature to let the creator know about your maintenance tags. See the tutorial again HERE. Get help HERE.

Stay up to date with recent new page developments and have your say, read THIS PAGE.

New Page Reviewer Newsletter

Hello Mdann52, thank you for your efforts reviewing new pages!

Backlog update:

  • The new page backlog is currently at 18,511 pages. We have worked hard to decrease from over 22,000, but more hard work is needed! Please consider reviewing even just a few pages a a day.
  • Some editors are committing to work specifically on patrolling new pages on 15 July. If you have not reviewed new pages in a while, this might be a good time to be involved. Please remember that quality of patrolling is more important than quantity, that the speedy deletion criteria should be followed strictly, and that ovetagging for minor issues should be avoided.

Technology update:

  • Several requests have been put into Phabractor to increase usability of the New Pages Feed and the Page Curation toolbar. For more details or to suggest improvements go to Wikipedia:Page Curation/Suggested improvements
  • The tutorial has been updated to include links to the following useful userscripts. If you were not aware of them, they could be useful in your efforts reviewing new pages:

Deaths by Russian roulette

You blanked this page; and even if I see you as a more experienced user - shouldn't it go throught standard deletion procedures? PsychoticInq (talk) 19:46, 24 July 2017 (UTC)

Blank and redirect is a process that can be used - as this is a newish article with only one editor, with another destination already available (ie. Russian_roulette#Notable_incidents), I decided that this largely-incomplete list, at this time, was not really useful. Mdann52 (talk) 19:48, 24 July 2017 (UTC)
== Hello! Thank you! ==

Thank you for your warm welcome! I'm learning as fast as I can, based on my time availability. I've written a BLP for inclusion, and I guess I've submitted it for review, but how can I tell? I went to the Teahouse and asked for a review, but I didn't include the article name since I have no idea how to do that yet.

I know you probably get an avalanche of people asking questions, and once I become experienced all this will seem rather rudimentary.... It's just overwhelming at the beginning.

Thanks again for the warm welcome.... Tn-morgen (talk) 21:08, 24 July 2017 (UTC)

@Tn-morgen: The article is located at Draft:Martin E Olsen, M.D.. I'll take a look now for you - it looks like it needs some trimming from a brief look. It may also be worth reading Wikipedia:Notability (doctors) (outdated), or WP:42 for some guidelines on sourcing and what is needed for an article to be accepted. Mdann52 (talk) 22:21, 24 July 2017 (UTC)

query

Out of curiosity, do you know why this edit caused so many changes? I can think of a reason those specific changes were made (they look like they are removing obsolete or deprecated HTML [small is not an obsolete element anymore], and cleaning up links to Wikipedia), but I do not know of any software gadget that does so on Wikipedia. Do you know of one? --Izno (talk) 20:47, 4 August 2017 (UTC)

@Izno: I think I must of accidentally ran a cleanup script on my page. I'm not sure which one, so I'll do some digging and see if I can find out what it was. Mdann52 (talk) 21:49, 4 August 2017 (UTC)

My uploads

Hi! Very many thanks for helping out with my OTRS uploads. I have stopped for now and here they are, listed, on my upload log. All looks fine except that three - seemingly randomly - now appear in red, although by clicking through one does eventually reach the correct files. Is this the sort of thing you meant when you mentioned things which might appear because of automation?

In any case I don't understand any of what has been going on, so would be most grateful if you can help put things right, assuming of course there is something to put right! Sorry for bothering you if there is no problem and thanks again for your help. AnOpenMedium (talk) 12:52, 18 October 2017 (UTC)

@AnOpenMedium: This is actually as the files have been moved to our sister site, Wikimedia Commons, so they are accessible to all Wikimedia Foundation sites. They still exist under that name, just not on en.wiki (if that makes sense?) Mdann52 (talk) 19:59, 18 October 2017 (UTC)
Thanks Mdann52! But at least some of the other uploads - which are *not* marked red - have also been moved to Commons, so what is special about those three uploads in particular? There is clearly something obvious I am missing, please forgive my ignorance. AnOpenMedium (talk) 10:01, 19 October 2017 (UTC)

Just in case you have pings turned off, or the software messed up, I've closed Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Arbitration Committee Elections December 2017/Electoral Commission, and ... well ... I kind of volunteered you for something. Please take a look and see if it's OK, there are 3 newbies this year and it would be great if they could ask you questions if they arise. I'm almost positive I saw you volunteer to help them out recently, so I hope that was OK. If I've misunderstood, let me know and I'll change my close. --Floquenbeam (talk) 20:25, 24 October 2017 (UTC)

I knew it, I knew I'd seen this someplace, it was just deleted so I couldn't see it on the page: [1]. So thanks for that. --Floquenbeam (talk) 20:27, 24 October 2017 (UTC)
@Floquenbeam: I did see that, but thanks for alerting me in any case! It was deleted as I got my dates in a muddle and missed the deadline :( Looks like I've got a year off for a change! Mdann52 (talk) 20:37, 24 October 2017 (UTC)

Hi there, have you looked any further into this? I am wondering as I may be able to help (maybe we work together on it?). If you don't want to work on it but do have any other additional info, that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! --TheSandDoctor (talk) 06:03, 22 October 2017 (UTC)

@TheSandDoctor: I've got something together, but I'm working on it as time allows. Unfortunately, it is currently spagetti code and linked to my personal Twitter account, so I'm not currently willing to release too much of it - feel free to drop me an email if there's anything you wish to add however! Mdann52 (talk) 20:38, 24 October 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for the response. Since messaging you I have developed a near production ready bot (just some minor tweaking needs to be done before I submit a BRFA, mainly around recognizing if {{cite web}} is used, converting it to {{cite tweet}}). As for the sensitive login information, I definitely understand where you are coming from and that is why I confined that sort of information to (a) separate file(s) that will never be made public that the other files access. --TheSandDoctor (talk) 22:19, 24 October 2017 (UTC)
@TheSandDoctor: Best of luck with that! I do that in production, I tend to forget to while prototyping however... Mdann52 (talk) 18:50, 25 October 2017 (UTC)
Fair enough, I typically do the same thing, although I do move the sensitive info to its own file (or simply remove it from copy uploaded) if uploading to Github or otherwise sharing code. If you are interested (I did ping you on the bot requests page about this), a BRFA has now been filed. If you have any suggestions or improvements to the bot's code, please feel free to let me know/create a pull request (of course, only if you want). --TheSandDoctor (talk) 04:13, 26 October 2017 (UTC)

It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

New Page Reviewer Newsletter

Hello Mdann52, thank you for your efforts reviewing new pages!

Backlog update:

  • The new page backlog is currently at 12713 pages. Please consider reviewing even just a few pages each day! If everyone helps out, it will really put a dent in the backlog.
  • Currently the backlog stretches back to March and some pages in the backlog have passed the 90 day Google index point. Please consider reviewing some of them!

Outreach and Invitations:

  • If you know other editors with a good understanding of Wikipedia policy, invite them to join NPP by dropping the invitation template on their talk page with: {{subst:NPR invite}}. Adding more qualified reviewers will help with keeping the backlog manageable.

New Year New Page Review Drive

  • A backlog drive is planned for the start of the year, beginning on January 1st and running until the end of the month. Unique prizes will be given in tiers for both the total number of reviews made, as well as the longest 'streak' maintained.
  • Note: quality reviewing is extremely important, please do not sacrifice quality for quantity.

General project update:

  • ACTRIAL has resulted in a significant increase in the quality of new submissions, with noticeably fewer CSD, PROD, and BLPPROD candidates in the new page feed. However, the majority of the backlog still dates back to before ACTRIAL started, so consider reviewing articles from the middle or back of the backlog.
  • The NPP Browser can help you quickly find articles with topics that you prefer to review from within the backlog.
  • To keep up with the latest conversation on New Pages Patrol or to ask questions, you can go to Wikipedia talk:New pages patrol/Reviewers and add it to your watchlist.

New Years new page backlog drive

Hello Mdann52, thank you for your efforts reviewing new pages!

Announcing the NPP New Year Backlog Drive!

We have done amazing work so far in December to reduce the New Pages Feed backlog by over 3000 articles! Now is the time to capitalise on our momentum and help eliminate the backlog!

The backlog drive will begin on January 1st and run until January 29th. Prize tiers and other info can be found HERE.

Awards will be given in tiers in two categories:

  • The total number of reviews completed for the month.
  • The minimum weekly total maintained for all four weeks of the backlog drive.

NOTE: It is extremely important that we focus on quality reviewing. Despite our goal of reducing the backlog as much as possible, please do not rush while reviewing.

New Page Reviewer Newsletter

Hello Mdann52, thank you for your efforts in reviewing new pages!
The NPP backlog at the end of the drive with the number of unreviewed articles by creation date. Red is older than 90 days, orange is between 90 and 30 days old, and green is younger than 30 days.

Backlog update:

  • The new page backlog is currently at 3819 unreviewed articles, with a further 6660 unreviewed redirects.
  • We are very close to eliminating the backlog completely; please help by reviewing a few extra articles each day!

New Year Backlog Drive results:

  • We made massive progress during the recent four weeks of the NPP Backlog Drive, during which the backlog reduced by nearly six thousand articles and the length of the backlog by almost 3 months!

General project update:

  • ACTRIAL will end it's initial phase on the 14th of March. Our goal is to reduce the backlog significantly below the 90 day index point by the 14th of March. Please consider helping with this goal by reviewing a few additional pages a day.
  • Reviewing redirects is an important and necessary part of New Page Patrol. Please read the guideline on appropriate redirects for advice on reviewing redirects. Inappropriate redirects can be re-targeted or nominated for deletion at RfD.

New Page Review Newsletter No.10

Hello Mdann52, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!

ACTRIAL:

  • ACTRIAL's six month experiment restricting new page creation to (auto)confirmed users ended on 14 March. As expected, a greatly increased number of unsuitable articles and candidates for deletion are showing up in the feed again, and the backlog has since increased already by ~30%. Please consider reviewing a few extra articles each day.

Paid editing

  • Now that ACTRIAL is inoperative pending discussion, please be sure to look for tell-tale signs of undisclosed paid editing. Contact the creator if appropriate, and submit the issue to WP:COIN if necessary.

Subject-specific notability guidelines

Nominate competent users for Autopatrolled

  • While patrolling articles, if you find an editor that is particularly competent at creating quality new articles, and that user has created more than 25 articles (rather than stubs), consider nominating them for the 'Autopatrolled' user right HERE.

News

  • The next issue Wikipedia's newspaper The Signpost has now been published after a long delay. There are some articles in it, including ACTRIAL wrap-up that will be of special interest to New Page Reviewers. Don't hesitate to contribute to the comments sections. The Signpost is one of the best ways to stay up date with news and new developments - please consider subscribing to it. All editors of Wikipedia and associated projects are welcome to submit articles on any topic for consideration by the The Signpost's editorial team for the next issue.

Account creator granted

After reviewing your request for the "accountcreator" permission, I have enabled the flag on your account. Keep in mind these things:

Closure of "Shooting of Stephon Clark" at BLP Notice Board

Recently, you closed a discussion regarding the Shooting of Stephon Clark article. A dispute is currently taking place regarding how to interpret your finding, namely, whether a proposed sentence does or does not adhere to the consensus as described by you, and it is my hope you will be able to take a moment and clarify your finding as it pertains to that sentence.

For reference, your words were: Closing per request at WP:RfCl. Reading through the discussions, both here and on the article's talk page, there does seem to be a weak consensus that some mention of the convictions should be made, but as it was not central to this case, they should not be covered in any great detail. I haven't assigned any weight to the COATRACK argument in this case, as I feel there has been sufficient discussion included to lead me to think it doesn't apply here. I also took note of the articles linked on the talk page as to what is included elsewhere on the site more generally for context. As for the exact wording, I think a fresh discussion into this may be best, if ultimately the decision is not to go with the previous line included in the article.

The sentence in question is: Sacramento County court records show that Clark had a history of convictions for robbery, domestic abuse, and a prostitution-related offense. At the time of his death he was on probation for a 2014 robbery conviction..

The discussion is on the articles talk page here.

Thank you for your help. Marteau (talk) 08:44, 18 April 2018 (UTC)

@Marteau: I've left my 2c over there if needed. I'm now removing the discussion from my watchlist, so please let me know should I be needed. Mdann52 (talk) 17:23, 18 April 2018 (UTC)

Upcoming changes to wikitext parsing

Hello,

There will be some changes to the way wikitext is parsed during the next few weeks. It will affect all namespaces. You can see a list of pages that may display incorrectly at Special:LintErrors. Since most of the easy problems have already been solved at the English Wikipedia, I am specifically contacting tech-savvy editors such as yourself with this one-time message, in the hope that you will be able to investigate the remaining high-priority pages during the next month.

There are approximately 10,000 articles (and many more non-article pages) with high-priority errors. The most important ones are the articles with misnested tags and table problems. Some of these involve templates, such as infoboxes, or the way the template is used in the article. In some cases, the "error" is a minor, unimportant difference in the visual appearance. In other cases, the results are undesirable. You can see a before-and-after comparison of any article by adding ?action=parsermigration-edit to the end of a link, like this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Foss?action=parsermigration-edit (which shows a difference in how {{infobox ship}} is parsed).

If you are interested in helping with this project, please see Wikipedia:Linter. There are also some basic instructions (and links to even more information) at https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-ambassadors/2018-April/001836.html You can also leave a note at WT:Linter if you have questions.

Thank you for all the good things you do for the English Wikipedia. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 21:18, 19 April 2018 (UTC)

Hi there. The changes you made to {{Infobox university}} causes the address line to show as multiple lines, at least on my screen. I use lintHint on every article I edit and it never showed any error, I suppose I am not configuring it right. --Muhandes (talk) 13:47, 22 April 2018 (UTC)

@Muhandes: I did make a change to fix this, however it doesn't look like it saved. I'm on mobile at the minute, but I'll get this sorted later on. it could, of course, be a false positive elsewhere. Mdann52 (talk) 13:51, 22 April 2018 (UTC)

German war effort RFAR

Hi, Mdann. I've just written to L235 about this, but it strikes me they're not in the best timezone for the purpose, so I'll just bring it to your attention as well. Have you seen User:Prüm's new comment, which is an intemperate attack on K.e.coffman?[2] I've advised them to remove it before a clerk does, but I don't really know what clerk practice is with regard to incivility and personal attacks on the RFAR page. @Bishonen: I've zapped it. Mdann52 (talk) 11:18, 3 May 2018 (UTC)
Thanks. I think the user was expressing some frustration. Bishonen | talk 11:20, 3 May 2018 (UTC).
