Deletion of user talk page

Deletion of talk page User talk:Ashlin K J. I'm involved in an edit war with @Ashlin K J & friends regarding unsourced content additions to Lead generation but I am noting you kindly deleted their talk page so I'm not too inclined to create a new one. Can you please create a new one with helpful links about unsourced content. Thankyou. Djm-leighpark (talk) 21:29, 30 May 2021 (UTC)

Okay .. I've re-created the page as 3 newbie editors are insisting on adding unsourced content and its me who would get blocked for edit warring. Please ignore this.  Done thankyou. Djm-leighpark (talk) 05:09, 31 May 2021 (UTC)
Hi Djm-leighpark, the talk page was created by a LTA and it was deleted while mass deleting all pages that they had created. Glad you took care of it. Ashleyyoursmile! 06:00, 31 May 2021 (UTC)

Hi Ashley, congrats on your successful RfA! I'm glad to see you editing at RfPP, and I thought I'd share this essay that MelanieN shared with me a while back which I found useful: User:MelanieN/Page protection. I think it does a much better job than the admin guide of helping clarify edge cases which is why I like it, but don't get me wrong, you're doing a good job! Thanks for your help, and let me know if I can help you with anything. Wug·a·po·des 20:08, 1 June 2021 (UTC)

Henry Clay

Hey. Check out the IP that recently vandalized Henry Clay. Based on behavioral evidence, it looks like the vandalism may be coming from a school. I would tag it, but I do not know how to determine exactly which school it came from. Scorpions13256 (talk) 14:54, 2 June 2021 (UTC)

Hi Scorpions13256, thanks for the message. I'm not sure if it's a school behaviour. They have so far made only two edits this month and their last block was back in February 2020 for 72 hours. I wouldn't block them now, I'm going to monitor their edits. Ashleyyoursmile! 15:00, 2 June 2021 (UTC)

MY PARAGRAPH RE: FRANK HOPKINS

Hello:

My addition to the article on Frank Hopkins, the Wild West Cowboy who wrote an autobiography about his life, the contents of which have been mostly debunked, drew a response from you saying that it had been archived because it has no citation.

It doesn't need a citation. I wrote that paragraph. I didn't get it from anybody. What I say in the paragraph is that, seen from a creative writer's point of view, the truth of what Hopkins wrote doesn't matter, even if he presented it as factual autobiography. In fact, that adds to its interest. Everyone now more or less agrees that Hopkins lied about a lot, maybe not everything, but certainly about major events such as the 3,000-mile horse race and that his mother was Lakota. So what? Did Buffalo Bill lie in the many Dime Novel stories about his life, or interviews he gave? Of course he did. It was good copy then and it's good copy now. And telling whoppers was a Wild West genre. An American genre, one might say. Such as "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" or the Paul Bunyon tales. Or Clifford Irving's "biography" of Howard Hughes. Or all those innumerable, wonderful, anonymous Native storytellers who told their kids around the campfire that Coyote was, indeed ,real. And thus bequeathed to us one of the greatest Tricksters in all world history storytelling and literature. Did every one of those people then who heard the stories believe without question that Coyote had created the world and that he had also made love to a human woman, etc.,? Does every single believer have to believe that Moses parted the Red Sea or that Jesus Christ without question turned water into wine at Cana? All stories to be believed require faith, the faith that there is some truth in them. Does it have to be literal belief? is symbolic acceptable?

From a postmodern perspective, Hopkins could be seen in a couple of ways. He is a type of the American con man that Melville portrays in The Confidence Man, a type that finds a public face in the recent president. Is Hopkins part of that line? All right, say he is. Still he was a writer, and though all writers of fictions may be cons they have never really materially hurt anybody. Has Hopkins? That's one point.

Hopkins's "autobiography" can be understood as a postmodern genre of which he is a forerunner, the fictional autobiography, a highly interesting fused genre. In the end, after all, he only penned a compelling novel and claimed much of the narrative as fact which wasn't. So, assuming no one has been substantially hurt, Point Two: Is Hopkins's aesthetic achievement interesting enough to survive no matter what it's literal truth? Considering that a film has been made from it and the film was a success on its own terms, I think one would have to at least acknowledge some worth in the material.

Thing is, sure, Hopkins told a whopper. Some believed it. Some didn't. But whether he did or didn't tell the truth, Hopkins deserves credit for being a storyteller who had a feel for the Wild West--fact and fiction--and left behind an interesting document, which can be viewed not just as a disreputable con job but as a forerunner to more conscious works of fictional autobiography. As long as we go in knowing that he made up most of it, and we even appreciate that aspect of the work, and we also see it from a sociological and historical perspective, we can enjoy this great whopper Hopkins gave us. It's the life he probably wanted to live. And did, in a way. How many white kids used to wish they were part First Nation (Indian)? So long as this wish respects First Nations people and in no way insults their dignity, can there be harm? Hopkins did live the life he wanted. Imaginatively. As many do.

Hello, Neil Flowers. What you just wrote and your article edit is your original research, and Wikipedia has a very firm policy called No original research. This policy is non-negotiable. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 23:20, 31 May 2021 (UTC)
Hi Neil Flowers, as Cullen328 explained, you need to provide citation to a reliable, published source to support the content that you want to add. Because we have a policy called Verifiability, sources should support the material as presented in the article instead of the beliefs or experiences of editors. Thank you, --Ashleyyoursmile! 04:12, 1 June 2021 (UTC)

"Lights Up" FAC

Hello again! I will do a review for the "Lights Up" FAC sometime in the future. I am currently reviewing another FAC and will be helping with a peer review after so I will be getting to both of those items first. My FAC review is very close to being completed. I just wanted to let you know that I did see your FAC and I wanted to make sure you knew that I was not ignoring. Best of luck with it. You have put a lot of work into the article, and I always love seeing song articles get some love and being nominated for a FAC. Aoba47 (talk) 23:36, 31 May 2021 (UTC)

I remember telling me earlier this year that you are extremely kind and helpful. I guess I know now what HĐ meant. You have helped me a lot during the peer review and I really appreciate your willingness to review it again. Thank you very much, Aoba47. :) I look forward to your comments. Hi Kittiy0403, nice to meet you. :) Ashleyyoursmile! 09:33, 8 June 2021 (UTC)

Hi, Ashley. I had just reverted the marketingspeak MonogramFoods2021 had wrapped bits of Monogram Foods in (IMO) and went to block them, to find your softblock. I'm not sure that's enough. Please check the edits and see what you think. Anyway, not the biggest deal, and it's night in this neck of the woods — I'm just going to bed. Bishonen | tålk 20:38, 7 June 2021 (UTC).

Hi Bishonen, my apologies for placing the soft-block. I have hard-blocked them. Again, apologies for any inconvenience. Ashleyyoursmile! 20:47, 7 June 2021 (UTC)
Ha, no, don't apologize, Ashley. We got different impressions and stumbled over each other's feet, that's all. It can easily happen, once a username is listed at UAA. G'night. Bishonen | tålk 21:08, 7 June 2021 (UTC).
  • Hey, Ashley, could you check the source after this edit, please? The edit was made by a new user, Sallyvaughan96, probably the same person as MonogramFoods2021, since the account was created after the softblock but before the hardblock. I was going to speak to the user, with a {{uw-paid1}} template, as well as telling her gently that she shouldn't change the information without a source for the change. This on the assumption that the given source only sources the original info. But that's not certain, and my problem is I can't access the source, Denison Bulletin Review, because of the ever-loving GDPR — I'm in the EU. I get a 451, "Unavailable due to legal reasons". So could you just look at the source and let me know, please? Then, of course, you're welcome to deal with it, or I can do it — whichever you prefer. And hey, I haven't congratulated you on your adminship, have I? Have an Adminship! Bishonen | tålk 09:00, 8 June 2021 (UTC).
Hi Bishonen, the source mentions: "Between 2010 and 2019, Monogram has donated over $3 million to charities focused on children and their families" and that they "will award $50,000 in 2020 to charitable organizations that sponsor programs benefiting children and their families." The source does not mention the figure "$4.5 million" so I have reverted their edit. Given the identical edit summaries "grammatical and stylistic changes" of both accounts, Sallyvaughan96 is likely a sock of MonogramFoods2021. You can go ahead and block them.
And, thank you very much for the congratulations, I really appreciate it. The painting is beautiful and I hope to do my best with the tools. :) Ashleyyoursmile! 09:32, 8 June 2021 (UTC)
Thanks, Ashley. A relative of mine painted the ship and uploaded it to Commons because I asked her to. Long time ago now! Well, I don't want to block Sally Vaughan, she's not a "sock" in that sense. (Certainly not as much of a sock as User:Bishzilla, .) She followed the instructions she originally got, and, going by the chronology, probably never saw the other instructions in the hardblock notice. I'll just tell her about WP:PAID and so on. Bishonen | tålk 11:08, 8 June 2021 (UTC).
    Bishonen, that's great. Thank you. :) Ashleyyoursmile! 12:14, 8 June 2021 (UTC)

American Hebrew Academy Edits

Good afternoon. I am the Educational Advisor for the American Hebrew Academy and made edits to update the wikipedia page, but they were rejected. Please let me know how to make edits. Thank you. ---- — Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.237.199.39 (talk) 16:33, 8 June 2021 (UTC)

Hello, it appears that you removed sourced content from the page without explaining why in the edit summary- see Special:Diff/1027555623 and Special:Diff/1027555804. Also, you have a conflict of interest with the article since you have a close affiliation with the academy. Hence, you are strongly discouraged to edit the article directly; however you are welcome to propose the required changes on the article's talk page instead. Thank you. Ashleyyoursmile! 16:44, 8 June 2021 (UTC)

Hello. I am going through CAT:UNBLOCK and saw this user. It looks like a good block.

This user has picked a new username. I also see a decent amount of quality edits from them in their contribution history. I want to check your opinion on unblocking them after getting their assurances that they will:

  1. Change their username
  2. Not promote anything on Wikipedia
  3. Stay away from the subject of Descartes Underwriting

I will not take any action until I hear your opinion on the matter. Keep up the good work. HighInBC Need help? Just ask. 07:57, 9 June 2021 (UTC)

Hi HighInBC, thank you for reaching out to me. If you are satisfied with their explanation that they have read and understood the policies, and that they do not intend to make promotional edits here, I'm okay with the unblock. Hope you have a great day. Ashleyyoursmile! 08:03, 9 June 2021 (UTC)
Okay I will wait until I get their assurances before proceeding. Thank you. HighInBC Need help? Just ask. 08:05, 9 June 2021 (UTC)

Help

Hi , Ashley I hope you knew myself , Dhaneesh 🙃 Ram. I have a better experience in wiki editing with my past account தனீஷ், but with my new account I can't create any new main Articles , even I can't move the draft to main Article. So can you help me , by giving me rights to main article creation or to move the draft to main Article. Or can you support to access my old account just for page moving.

Rather than this , please move my recent draft Draft:Tiruchirappalli Local Planning Authority to main Article . Thank you. Dhaneesh🙃Ram 09:09, 27 June 2021 (UTC)

Ram Dhaneesh, you had agreed to not use both accounts simultaneously, but it appears that you have been actively editing with both. This has to stop immediately or it would get you blocked. And no, I'm not going to grant any permissions to your new account. Wait for two more days and your new account would be autoconfirmed. Ashleyyoursmile! 13:05, 27 June 2021 (UTC)

Thank you so much Ashley. Dhaneesh 🙃Ram 04:57, 28 June 2021 (UTC)

IP thanks

Thank you for helping dealing with the uncivil IP. Even with a block, they seem to to still be name-calling via edit descriptions on their own talk page here. Is there any way we can deal with this? Andrzejbanas (talk) 06:54, 28 June 2021 (UTC)

Andrzejbanas, thanks for letting me know. I'll revoke their talk page access if they make further attacks. Ashleyyoursmile! 06:58, 28 June 2021 (UTC)

Deletion of a article

Hi there.

I created an article for somebody, and the person in question has contacted me asking me to delete the article. Is this something you can do?

The article is not overly critical of them or anything, they just want it taken down for privacy reasons.

If this is something you can do, please write me back and I can give you the article name.

Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by JoshFight (talkcontribs) 08:43, 28 June 2021 (UTC)

Hi Ashley! Although it doesn't matter but still I thought to let you know. The Featured topic icon on left side of your userpage points to wrong(non-existent) page. I couldn't figure out how to correct it or else I would have told you. -- Parnaval (talk) 10:40, 28 June 2021 (UTC)

Fixed. Thank you, Parnaval. Ashleyyoursmile! 10:44, 28 June 2021 (UTC)

Balance Coffee Affogato Query

Hello Ashley,

Apologies if you thought there was any 'spamming' going on with our additions. We were certainly only trying to provide value via our content and thought we would be well placed to contribute to the affogato page.

We certainly won't add any more links if you don't think our content is offering the value we intended.

We'd love some further feedback and any direction and guidance.

Many Thanks, James (Balance team). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 176.252.43.139 (talk) 09:03, 28 June 2021 (UTC)

Thank you for improving articles in June, with some impressions of places, flowers and music for you. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:42, 20 June 2021 (UTC)

Bergman: I don't think you have to change a target to avoid a redirect (unless it's for the Main page). Actually, a working redirect from his wife's maiden name would tell me better that it's the right person than a piped link. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:04, 23 June 2021 (UTC)
Hi Gerda Arendt, you are right. The piped link was unnecessary. I've removed it. Thanks. :) Ashleyyoursmile! 10:09, 23 June 2021 (UTC)
Gerda Arendt, seems like I'm running out of ideas for DYK hooks. Would you mind suggesting one for Gun Bergman? Ashleyyoursmile! 10:31, 23 June 2021 (UTC)
But that looks like such an easy one, mentioning that translation of the work of a Nobel-laureate-to be ;) ... that G.U. (piped, pictured) translated ... before becoming the wife of Ingmar B? - Or no husband at all, but praise by the author? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:13, 23 June 2021 (UTC)
Gerda Arendt, yes that sounds nice. I was thinking of something that could incorporate that for Ivo Andrić, Bergman was the only one translator in Sweden. Ashleyyoursmile! 13:07, 23 June 2021 (UTC)
Also fine, go ahead ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:26, 23 June 2021 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – July 2021

News and updates for administrators from the past month (June 2021).

Guideline and policy news

  • Consensus has been reached to delete all books in the book namespace. There was rough consensus that the deleted books should still be available on request at WP:REFUND even after the namespace is removed.
  • An RfC is open to discuss the next steps following a trial which automatically applied pending changes to TFAs.

Technical news

  • IP addresses of unregistered users are to be hidden from everyone. There is a rough draft of how IP addresses may be shown to users who need to see them. This currently details allowing administrators, checkusers, stewards and those with a new usergroup to view the full IP address of unregistered users. Editors with at least 500 edits and an account over a year old will be able to see all but the end of the IP address in the proposal. The ability to see the IP addresses hidden behind the mask would be dependent on agreeing to not share the parts of the IP address they can see with those who do not have access to the same information. Accessing part of or the full IP address of a masked editor would also be logged. Comments on the draft are being welcomed at the talk page.

Touching base: I'm Director of the film Private Number

Hello Ashley,

First off, I apologize for that, I wasn't aware who set up the page. So please forgive me for my stumble in clarity. I'm the Director, writer, producer. I would like to make some changes to the wikipedia regarding the movie. Since the time of the release 5 years ago Arc Ent, the company went out of business 7 months later. Since my company is the sole owner of the film 100%, we went back and reshot 50% of the movie and brought in additional cast mates to make it 100 times stronger, and it will be released everywhere this October 1st . Also, the name of the movie is different. Its now spelled, "PR1VAT3 NUMB3R" I'm happy to provide you whatever is needed to post. Thank you for your time and again I hope you can help me. God bless

Hello Antwan2021, thank you for reaching out to me. Since you have disclosed your affiliation with the movie, you have a conflict of interest. Editors who have a conflict of interest are strongly discouraged from editing the related pages on Wikipedia. You might want to propose the necessary changes on the article's talk page instead, by using the {{request edit}} template. The requested changes would be reviewed and made by other editors. For further details, please see WP:COI and WP:COIEDIT. Thank you. Ashleyyoursmile! 15:05, 4 July 2021 (UTC)
