RFXR for FLC?

Hey, I was curious whether something similar to WP:RFXR could be written for FLC (with the columns containing the article, its nomination, amount of time it's run, and the nominators; the row would be shaded when the FLC is overdue, similar to how RFXR is shaded when a RfA is overdue for a close) that was updated by a bot. I admit to be clueless concerning coding, and noted that you run SoxBot, which currently updates RFXR. Currently, the FLC directors update Wikipedia:Featured list candidates/backlog manually, which is a bit of a drag, and it would be easier to refer to something that was automatically updated, as it would bring attention to FLCs that need more reviewers or are due for a close. Thanks a bunch, — sephiroth bcr (converse) 21:17, 1 May 2009 (UTC)

Sure. Xclamation point 21:47, 1 May 2009 (UTC)

Colombia–Croatia relations

Is there any chance that you will reconsider your closure of Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Colombia–Croatia relations? Otherwise it's of course going to deletion review. Denying deletion of one of 20,000 potential bilateral relations articles (c. 0.66 % of the current number of proper Wikipedia articles per WP:Statistics) on the grounds that a notability guideline that is being vigorously opposed by some may at some time in the future allow the article seems at least arguable in a borderline case. But this is not a borderline case at all. You might also want to consider the fact that all previous closers of similar AfDs (there have been lots recently) seem not to have taken this argument particularly seriously. The only reason this is probably not going to lead to massive disruption through renewed mass creation of silly stubs like Andorra–Tonga relations is that your colleagues are not going to follow you. Denying deletion of such articles might make some sense if there were an embargo on their creation; but there is none. --Hans Adler (talk) 17:20, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

Agree with above. none of the keep arguments in this case addressed the notability of the article subject. secondly, there have been at least 30 of these X-Y articles that have been deleted in recent weeks. LibStar (talk) 23:49, 4 May 2009 (UTC)
I too agree: "keep" votes should substantively address the article, not deal with extraneous issues. - Biruitorul Talk 00:02, 5 May 2009 (UTC)
I have done several rescue jobs on articles like this. My bias is to think that relations between two countries are likely to warrant an article. It annoys me that the serial stub creator who started most of these articles apparently had no intent of taking them beyond the stub level, so triggered a mass of deletion nominations. Once deleted, an editor who decides to recreate an article like this will see heavy warnings, and will think twice before proceeding. The stub creator did damage. That said, an AfD discussion should focus on the article itself, not the potential. Maybe this article could be salvaged - I may take a shot at it myself, because I sort of enjoy puzzles like this - but as it stands it is hard to see any justification for keeping it. I see no valid "keep" arguments in the debate. Aymatth2 (talk) 01:33, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

SoxBot source code

As an FYI, it looks like you have links to the same source code on the bot's user page for both the RFA/RFB graph update and the updating of Brack Obama approval rating graph. I'm assuming they have different code. I know this isn't affecting the bot itself, but since you're making the code available, I figured you'd want it pointing to the right one. Deletion review for Colombia–Croatia relations

An editor has asked for a deletion review of Colombia–Croatia relations. Because you closed the deletion discussion for this page, speedily deleted it, or otherwise were interested in the page, you might want to participate in the deletion review.

I am surprised that you ignored my request to review a predictably controversial decision for 33 hours and then went on wiki break after my request to at least tell me and the 3 other editors whether or not we can expect a response, but without reacting to it in any way. As I feel that due to the ongoing related AfDs this is a pressing matter, I thought it better not to wait for your return and perhaps continued silence before opening a deletion review. --Hans Adler (talk) 12:35, 6 May 2009 (UTC)

Is there a reason it needs to shout "admin bot" in each edit summary? And is there a reason to include a link to the user page when it's already available in watchlists, history pages, etc.? Why not "Bot: Updating." or "Bot: Updating."? --MZMcBride (talk) 04:45, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

One more thing. Can it use {{#tag:pre|TemplateName}} rather than {{TemplateName}}. The current implementation leaves a lot of unclosed tags which can hide important things like the ==Error== header. Thanks! --MZMcBride (talk) 05:00, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

Hey X!, I just got back from a wiki-break, and see you're heading out on one. Enjoy my friend, soak in the trees, the grass, the sun, the mountains or the beach - enjoy life! I consider you one of the brightest and best that WP has to offer, and I'll look forward to your return. I got the impression that, for multiple reasons, you've been frustrated lately by WP/RL - and I wish that were not so. I know you probably don't know me from Adam, but I read and admire your work here - so I just wanted to drop by and offer a "best wishes" to ya. Take care of yourself (so you can then take care of the wiki - lol), and be happy. All my best - Ched. — Ched :  ?  13:38, 15 May 2009 (UTC)

Soxy 5 acting up?

I have to say that I oppose the speedy deletion of this article. While the article most certainly requires a lot of improvement and referencing, Frost's extremely controversial relationships with his players, the NHL and the NHLPA are easily notable, and following the recent cleanup of unsourced material, was sourced via both inline refs (not nearly enough, admittedly) and the ELs included. I would like to ask that you restore the article such that it can be worked on and improved. Thanks, Resolute 19:36, 15 May 2009 (UTC)

Statement on dates

Greetings, fellow BAGger! FYI, an Arbcom decision will soon be made in which the BAG will likely be prominently mentioned. I've constructed a draft consensus statement at Wikipedia talk:Bot Approvals Group/Draft consensus statement on date delinking to assist the ArbCom. If you could indicate whether or not you approve of the various statements there, it would be very helpful. All the best, – Quadell (talk) 12:46, 18 May 2009 (UTC)

User:SoxBot and {{rfatally}}

Couple of problems - I don't see a BRFA for this, it's a perennial request which has been knocked back on several occassions, and more importantly, the template you're using doesn't transclude properly, which you visit WP:RFA, the tally for any RfA says (0/0/0) until you visit the actual subpage, which isn't entirely helpful. I'm also wondering if this is really an unnecessary drain on server resources, like the similar status updating bots that Brion decided weren't necessary or useful. Do we really need an automated bot to make an extra edit to a page, many users when they update RfA don't treat it as a vote and so don't update the tally, whilst other users update the tally themselves when they comment on the RfA, it all seems very unnecessary. Nick (talk) 23:14, 18 May 2009 (UTC)

First, a BRFA was not necessary as it is editing entirely in userspace. WP:BOT states that BRFAs are not necessary for userspace bots. Second, I see the problem with the WP:RFA page, and I'll fix that. Third, When I made this proposal on WT:RFA, I took the resources into account, and I feel that it is justified in that it...
  1. provides a more useful purpose than changing 500 subpages from offline to online
  2. updates multiple RfAs with a single edit
  3. doesn't waste resources with 500 subpages.
Fourth, it seems more unneccesary for users to constantly be watching RfAs and updating the tally when they could be doing more useful things. This task is perfect to be bot operated, and the only reason to say that it isn't is because "RfA isn't a vote". If it isn't, then the tally shouldn't be there. And since the tally is there, it only makes sense that it is to remain updated. Xclamation point 02:51, 19 May 2009 (UTC)
Indeed - the bot will make less edits than the users would have. Sometimes a tally is updated many times in half an hour, and not always with coinciding edits as you said. One downside is you won't get to see candidates who obsessively update the tally on their own RFA (highlighting over-eagerness). –xeno talk 02:56, 19 May 2009 (UTC)

SoxBot claimed to be "Removing categorization template" but also removed two other templates as well. They were on the same line. I'll stop the bot to give you a chance to fix it without it making more work for you to doublecheck. Bazj (talk) 15:16, 18 May 2009 (UTC)

"WARNING: If you block this bot, please TURN OFF AUTOBLOCK, so that the other Toolserver and ClueNet bots keep working." - How? Bazj (talk) 15:31, 18 May 2009 (UTC)
I think the .* in:
$newtext = preg_replace('/\{\{('.implode('|',$tofind).')(.*)\}\}/i', '', $text);
needs to be [^}]* or the regex needs to be made non-greedy. Bazj (talk) 15:37, 18 May 2009 (UTC)
It's also done the same with these edits... [1], [2], and that's just checking the first 6 edits with the same edit summary. Bazj (talk) 16:34, 18 May 2009 (UTC)

"Changed protection level for "User:SoxBot/Run": Getting shutoff too often, is interrupting important tasks." Wouldn't it be better to either fix the problem I reported here and via email or to strip the bot back to just doing the "important tasks" rather than prevent anybody stopping it from making unimportant automated errors??? Bazj (talk) 21:47, 18 May 2009 (UTC)

Wouldn't it be better to understand that I wasn't on my computer at all when you posted it? Bot operators aren't on the computer 24/7... Xclamation point 22:15, 18 May 2009 (UTC)
Where have I said that you should be available 24x7? Or even within a couple of hours? I have no problem with the speed of your response.
I did balk at the request to register on another website to report a problem on Wikipedia. Since your bugs page indicated you'd receive an email, I emailed you. As a courtesy, not an expectation of 24x7 attention.
However, I did expect that your response would involve fixing the problem rather than ignoring it, turning the bot back on, and (mis)using your admin privileges to put the shutdown switch out of the reach of ordinary editors. Bazj (talk) 08:49, 19 May 2009 (UTC)
I did fix it, and I'm going to do something about the "too many eggs" shutoff issue. Xclamation point 10:53, 19 May 2009 (UTC)

RfAtally

Hey, could you considering programming SoxBot to update User:X!/Tally every 15 minutes, rather than every 30? Some editors at WT:RFA have noted that it takes too long for new votes to register. Thanks, –Juliancolton | Talk 15:38, 25 May 2009 (UTC)

That doesn't seem to be the reason; the oppose was up there for several runs of the bot but it seemed not to see the oppose until I added a reply [3]. –xenotalk 15:42, 25 May 2009 (UTC)
Hmm, that's odd, I hadn't noticed that... –Juliancolton | Talk 15:45, 25 May 2009 (UTC)
Hmm... that's really odd. That's a problem in Tangotango's RfA library, I'll have to fix that. Xclamation point 16:10, 25 May 2009 (UTC)

Hey there X!, thanks for approving my trial. I wondered if you might change the trial edits to 50, as I had a task that would require posting once to "Outline of [Insert US State]". If I could do all of that at once, that would be great. Thanks, NW (Talk) (How am I doing?) 16:13, 25 May 2009 (UTC)

Hi X!,

I'm helping a new contributor out & he had an article deleted recently & I was wondering whether you could userfy for him so then him & I can go over it & make it up to standards? The user is User:1999blacklist666 & the article was this-here. Could you let me know when you've done it? Thank you! dottydotdot (talk) 22:39, 25 May 2009 (UTC)

Ask for review of User talk:Myklroventine

See User talk:Myklroventine. User has been on hold for a long time, and seems to be an infrequent editor. I am inclined to unblock him, as his explanation seems reasonable, and the sock accusation seems tenuous UNLESS there was also checkuser evidence to confirm. DO you have any input on this? --Jayron32.talk.contribs 16:13, 27 May 2009 (UTC)

rfatally on archived RFAs

FWIW, Template:Rfatally doesn't appear to work on closed/archived RFAs, like this one. tedder (talk) 19:25, 29 May 2009 (UTC)

The RFA tally needs to be substed when the RFA is closed; I assume the crats do this? –xenotalk 19:50, 29 May 2009 (UTC)
Exactly. Xclamation point 20:30, 29 May 2009 (UTC)
I added a YELLING HIDDEN LINE [4] to remind of that. –xenotalk 20:36, 29 May 2009 (UTC)
bueno. Thanks xeno. tedder (talk) 20:39, 29 May 2009 (UTC)

This is a good template. No more having to update the vote any longer.

I am the original creator of the {{IPsock}} template. Judging from the fact that it's protected, I say it too was well received.

I see you're a Sox fan, and it seems the American League East once again belongs to them and the Yanks, looks like it's going to be a long race. –BuickCenturyDriver 22:53, 29 May 2009 (UTC)

Heads up

I just deleted User talk:X!/Bugs because it only contained spam and other garbage. I doubt that it really matters, but just in case ... Graham87 05:29, 30 May 2009 (UTC)

SoxBot task: Tagging images from MediaWiki:Bad image list

Hi
Can you tell SoxBot to ignore deleted images on the MediaWiki:Bad image list, unlike here where the image was deleted 15 minutes earlier? They are often only removed after a while from the list, and if SoxBot recreates the image page then those deleted images are harder to spot, and to remove from the list.
Thanks, Amalthea 21:02, 30 May 2009 (UTC)

NowCommons: File:Spi-fez.png

File:Spi-fez.png is now available on Wikimedia Commons as Commons:File:Spi-fez.png. This is a repository of free media that can be used on all Wikimedia wikis. The image will be deleted from Wikipedia, but this doesn't mean it can't be used anymore. You can embed an image uploaded to Commons like you would an image uploaded to Wikipedia, in this case: [[File:Spi-fez.png]]. Note that this is an automated message to inform you about the move. This bot did not copy the image itself. --Erwin85Bot (talk) 00:36, 31 May 2009 (UTC)

ACC

I saw that you're a developer on ACC. I have written a simple greasemonkey script that checks to see if there are any new (unhandled) open requests, but I've come across a few problems. Currently, it checks statistics for open requests, but handled requests are also listed. I was wondering if you could create a link (which shows only plaintext) unhandled open requests, another separate link which shows the number of unhandled flagged user requests. If you need the script, let me know.Smallman12q (talk) 02:03, 31 May 2009 (UTC)

A Bot Idea

Can you program a bot to take care of red links? It should be pretty simple, and red links are a real problem. Please get back to be on my talkpage. Thanks, AndrewrpTally-ho! 21:25, 31 May 2009 (UTC)

Unfortunately, that's impossible for a bot. Red links are not a problem, and red links are encouraged in some contexts. Red links are how Wikipedia gained over 2 million articles: someone sees a redlink and wants to write an article on it. (See WP:REDDEAL). Thanks for your idea, anyway.
