Virgin Mobile South Africa is a mobile phone service provider operating in South Africa. The company launched in 2006 as a joint venture between Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Group and Cell C. In February 2011, Cell C sold its stake to Virgin Group and Calico Investments, after which Virgin Group assumed a controlling stake.[1]

Services

Voice & SMS

Virgin Mobile have based their pricing on a drop-down rate system in which after the first 5 minutes the cost of the call will drop. SMS on the other hand has a flat rate of 60c. Virgin Mobile also offer inclusive SMS bundles on pre-paid packages where subscribers receive 500 SMS's when purchasing a R99 airtime voucher and 250 SMS's when purchasing a R50 airtime voucher. Certain contracts also include 1000 free SMS's per month.[2]

But with only 300 000 subscribers, Virgin remains the smallest mobile network in South Africa, making it less likely subscribers will be able to enjoy free minutes by talking with others on the Virgin network. MTN claims to have more than 24 million users.

Internet

Virgin Mobile offers users mobile internet via EDGE, 3G and HSPA+ at the cost of 60c per MB.[3]
