Add caption here
Would it make sense to remove all the occurrences of Add caption here from articles? --Leyo 01:53, 4 December 2011 (UTC)
- Yes. Fortunately the search with quotes returns only 339 matches instead of over 15,000. I'm not going to get round to this soon, though. -- John of Reading (talk) 11:35, 4 December 2011 (UTC)

Removing/replacing improperly placed sandbox templates
Plenty of pages transclude Sandbox heading, and most of these transclusions shouldn't be there because they're on user pages or other inappropriate places. Could somebody use AWB to go through this list and clean it up? Instances of the template in the user namespace can be replaced with User sandbox, if necessary. Thanks! - Is there any consensus? Hazard-SJ ± 21:34, 19 November 2011 (UTC)
- Why would there need to be consensus? It seems pretty uncontroversial to me to remove misleading templates. Graham87 04:29, 20 November 2011 (UTC)
- I manually removed it from all the articles and article talk pages. Looks like the transclusions on the Wikipedia and Wikipedia talk pages are OK. That leaves the Template talk, User and User talk pages. GoingBatty (talk) 20:33, 20 November 2011 (UTC)

New task
Search and replace:
Replace instances of Non-free currency with ir-MoneyNon-free currency. This is a bold move so that the copyright aspects of currency designs can be split from the anti-counterfeiting considerations. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 16:23, 21 December 2011 (UTC)
- There are 1376 transclusions. I'm all set up, and have done the first few. This would be better done by someone with a bot account, though, to avoid filling up people's watchlists. -- John of Reading (talk) 17:12, 21 December 2011 (UTC)

This still needs to be done. Once done, Non-free Currency can be re-written appropriately :) Sfan00 IMG (talk) 21:21, 22 December 2011 (UTC)
- Those transclusion counts are misleading because there are pages that use ir-Money without using Non-free currency. I've done another 70, but I estimate that there are another 600 to do. That's too many for me to do while keeping my edit rate slower than "a few edits a minute" as required by the AWB terms of use. -- John of Reading (talk) 21:56, 22 December 2011 (UTC)

- I don't think it is allowed to use AWB only for this purpose, so I'd like to wait for consensus before even thinking of making a BRFA for getting this done. Also, WP:BOTREQ is probably a better place for such large requests (1755 transclusions). Hazard-SJ ㋡ 20:26, 23 December 2011 (UTC)

"on his passing"
We had a lively and productive discussion here in August 2011 (see Archive 4) about "Passed away" and other euphemisms. It looks like we missed "his passing" and "her passing", which have obvious exceptions, such as "known for his passing accuracy". I think that it is uncontroversial to change "On his passing in 1940 he was laid to rest ..." to "On his death in 1940 he was buried ...", and maybe even better to make it "He died in 1940 and was buried ...". I am also catching variations such as "his passing away" and "her passing on". I am doing a metric ton of these, and wouldn't mind some company. There are hundreds of "her passing" and thousands of "his passing", so the sheer number makes AWB the tool of choice. I have a set of about eight F&R rules that work pretty well, and will post them here if requested. A sharp lookout for quotations and false positives is needed, of course. Chris the speller yack 19:42, 31 January 2012 (UTC)
- Thats interesting and glad to hear your doing that. I was just wondering but how did you get the list? --Kumioko (talk) 19:51, 31 January 2012 (UTC)
- A text search for "his passing" and "her passing". There are relatively few false positives. I haven't gone into "husband's passing" or "mother's passing" or "laid to rest" yet (but am catching them in association with "his passing"). With those, we will mostly have to keep an eye out for quotations. Chris the speller yack 20:07, 31 January 2012 (UTC)
- Interesting good to know thanks. I would offer to help but I am totally swamped at the moment. Until I can get the 10 or so tasks currently pending BRFA passed I'm pretty much editing as fast as I can hit the button. --Kumioko (talk) 20:14, 31 January 2012 (UTC)

Sure.
\b([Tt])he passing of\b $1he death of
\bpassing on\b(?<=(His|his|Her|her) passing on) death
\bpassing away\b(?<=(His|his|Her|her) passing away) death
\bpassing away\b dying
\bpassing\b(?<=(His|his|Her|her|wife's|husband's|mother's|father's|friend's|[A-Z][a-z]+'s) passing)(?! an\b| a\b| the\b| through\b) death
\bpassed away\b died
\bpassed on\b died
\blaid to rest\b buried
These ain't beautiful, but they work pretty well. There can be a few false positives, such as "He was known for passing on his knowledge", but I'm sure you can handle them. You may have to choose between "death" and "dying" in a few cases where the context gives just a clue whether the process of dying or the instant of death is meant. Have fun! Chris the speller yack 03:06, 1 February 2012 (UTC)
- I tried a few of these, but there are lots of false positives. Wish AWB had logic in the F&R rules similar to WP:AWB/T that would ignore text in quotations. GoingBatty (talk) 00:50, 4 February 2012 (UTC)
- Yes, there are enough false positives, so it's not suitable for Typos, but an editor of your caliber can easily manage if you find it to your taste. I'm glad F&R doesn't always skip quotations, so it can be used to fix mild misspellings such as "commmonplace". If you wish to bail out, I will continue. Chris the speller yack 05:20, 4 February 2012 (UTC)
- Find & Replace can skip text in quotations, using the two "Ignore" checkboxes at the top left of the F&R dialog. -- John of Reading (talk) 10:29, 4 February 2012 (UTC)
- I too am getting quite a few false positives, mostly related to football, e.g. "His passing ability". My approach to find the pages that need to be changed is to build a list from Category:2012 deaths, then add the 2011 deaths, and so on. – Majora4 (leave a message) 05:15, 4 February 2012 (UTC)
- Another, less time-consuming, way would be to use text search ("his passing") and set AWB to skip articles that contain "football". Chris the speller yack 05:24, 4 February 2012 (UTC)
- Or, just do text search on "his passing" -"football" Chris the speller yack 05:27, 4 February 2012 (UTC)
- That certainly does work and it's less time-consuming than my idea. However, I've actually found two football-related articles which did use "passed away" to mean "died". – Majora4 (leave a message) 05:56, 4 February 2012 (UTC)

Lots of redlinked swimmers, 100% seem to be sourced at Sports-Reference.com. So, can AWB be used to, for each redlinked swimmer:
- delink the name
- auto-build either plain refs:
-
- or template-based refs:
-

Replace
Replace 'You Tube' with 'YouTube'? I've seen many users do that. As I am never likely going to be accepted for AWB, can someone do it? ~ ⇒TomTomN00 @ 23:40, 11 April 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks for the suggestion. I'd like to volunteer to address it, but I've only had AWB for a couple of days and I'm still learning the ropes. I mean I've used it to apply various fixes on hundreds of pages already (I'm double-checking the diffs of course) but if someone could help illustrate what I need to do I'll see if I can take this on. I'm sure it would be very educational. So can anyone help me out here? Jesse V. (talk) 21:57, 12 April 2012 (UTC)
- I'll see if I can figure this out from the Find and Replace subpage of the User Manual, but things aren't entirely clear still. Jesse V. (talk) 22:00, 12 April 2012 (UTC)
- I might have taken care of this. I fixed 44 pages that had this issue. I did a simple Wiki Search (text) for "You Tube", and got 1000 results (the max number) but when I ran in pre-parsed mode I discovered that nearly all of them didn't actually have "You Tube" in them. I tried searching again using a regular expression, but that failed. So I'm not sure if I got all of them, but at least I fixed a good portion of them. Jesse V. (talk) 00:38, 13 April 2012 (UTC)
- I think you will find that there are still many hundreds left to fix. I tweaked AWB/Typos to fix 'You Tube' and also 'You-Tube'. In time, there will be a smaller number left to fix, but it looks like AWB/Typos skips the description part of external links, and that is where a lot of these reside. We might need to run this as a Find & Replace rule to get those. Chris the speller yack 04:11, 13 April 2012 (UTC)
- There are still over 400 pages that I collected in pre-parse mode, using "\b(?:Yout|you[Tt]|You[- ]T)ube\b(?!.com)(?<![-":/\{]youtube)" for the Find rule. This has more checks in the negative lookbehind, as F&R will try to fix URLS and other things that the Typos will leave alone. I have started in on these, but would welcome some help. - To clarify, the biggest issue I'm having is how to load the list in the first place. Jesse V. (talk) 06:18, 20 April 2012 (UTC)
- On the "Make list" panel, select "Wiki search (text)" in the "Source" drop-down box, then put "you tube" (including the quotation marks) in the "Wiki search" text box. Chris the speller yack 13:13, 20 April 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks, got it. Under Find and Replace Advanced Settings I've created that rule using the regex, checked the "Skip if no replacement" checkbox. I've enabled RegexTypoFix, but haven't checked the "Skip if typos fixed" box. Under the Skip tab, I've enabled "Skip if no changes are automatically made" and "skip if only whitespace changes are made", also "Skip if page is in use" and "skip if edit blocked by spam filter". I did what you said, appended the list from "You Tube" to the list of "You-tube", had about a thousand pages, but then I applied the Filter to remove non-content, plus remove "Wikipedia:" and "User:". Then I had a list of about 40, and most of those were from URLs which I of course skipped. I ended up making a grand total of 2 edits. Is this taken care of? I'm not finding AWB to be the most intuitive.... Jesse V. (talk) 14:46, 20 April 2012 (UTC)

Done. When Batty said he was "fixing some", I think he was fixing a lot. As for AWB not being intuitive, I have never found the need to use F&R Advanced settings, so maybe I have avoided the part that's not intuitive. There's a bit of a learning curve to AWB in general, and I have only tried trickier features when I really felt the need for them, so it has not been overwhelming. I hope most of your experience with AWB is enjoyable and satisfying. Chris the speller yack 13:07, 21 April 2012 (UTC)

Uncatting and deletion of term across wikipedia
Please see here: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Electro hop, so result was delete for a pure OR genre, unfortunately the only person defending it went on a bit of a spree trying to get the cat and the genre on as many wikipages as possible, in the misguided belief that this would save the article from deletion.
As someone posted on my talkpage, these areas need looking at category:Electro-hop songs, category:Electro-hop artists, category:Electro-hop musicians, can you people with AWB just wikiwide delete the mention of electrohop, whether it be the catting or the mention of the genre, then I will nom the cats for deletion? Much appreciated (and I would like to commend you for your fine work, don't have time to get to grips with AWB myself, but believe this page is seriously underused, cheers!) Need some help with a task
I am working on trimming down the articles that need assessment for WikiProject United States and the projects that it supports and I have a bit of a dilemna. I have already gone through and done the redirects but it took a day and a half for AWB to prescan them. Now I am working on doing the Disambiguous pages, and there are a lot I'm sure. The problem is there are more than 25000 in Category:Unassessed United States articles and about 165000 in Template:WikiProject Disambiguation making the list comparer kinda useless without the NL plugin or admin rights. Can someone please do a compare between these 2 and give me the list of the articles that are common between them? This would save me about a day and a half of processing time to make the list and let me use it for doing the edits instead. Kumioko (talk) 01:00, 10 May 2012 (UTC)

Possible AWB task
There is a discussion here for a simple and small task that I think is ok for AWB since there are only about 400 articles affected. I even added some code to make it easier if you want to use it. Basically a WikiProject Template was deprecated and needs to be either removed if the page contains WikiProject Chemistry or replaced with WikiProject Chemistry if it does not. The code is set to replace because the first several I looked at didn't already have Chemistry but some likely do have both. Kumioko (talk) 18:58, 16 May 2012 (UTC)

Dash fixing
Lots of articles with en dash in their titles, like blood–brain barrier, are widely linked by their hyphen redirects, like blood-brain barrier, which means the punctuation/typography is wrong (or not up to the recommendations of WP:MOS at least) in the articles linking them. It seems that it should be easy for AWB or some such tool to identify these cases and fix them. That is, whenever there's a link like love-hate relationship to a redirect to an article whose name differs only in having an en dash where the redirect has a hyphen, the source link should be changed, e.g. to love–hate relationship. There are probably thousands of these waiting to be improved. Dicklyon (talk) 04:43, 25 May 2012 (UTC)
- Yes, the same task occurred to me a few months ago, also for diacritics. I didn't get round to it, but do have a database scanner for redirect tagging that I could re-use to list the applicable redirects. Then I'd need a scanner for the articles with links to the redirects, and a bit of logic to use a list of endash redirects to bypass. All seems quite straightforward. It would be ideal for a bot task, so I'll write that up first. Rjwilmsi 06:57, 25 May 2012 (UTC)

Removing obsolete tags
I was looking over the auto-tag features here and it occurred to me that many articles may have obsolete tags. For example, they may be tagged as deadend but have actually have wikilinks and no one has bothered to remove the tag. I suggest that AWB be used to take care of this, except for the Orphan tag because IMO it's always good to add more incoming links so it would do more harm than good if removed for a single link or two. I'm currently carefully trying to cut down on the wikify backlog, but there are plenty of other tags that AWB can handle automatically. It'd be nice to have some help on the other categories. It's easy enough to do: you load a category like Category:Dead-end pages, click the "Auto change skip options", and only choose "auto tag changes". Then run AWB in pre-parsed mode, make yourself a sandwich or something, and when AWB finishes you should have a list of articles that need a tag change. Jesse V. (talk) 03:33, 24 June 2012 (UTC)
- Hi Jesse! I agree that removing obsolete maintenance tags is a worthy task, and I use BattyBot to do some of this work. Here's what AWB does and the feedback I've seen:
- AWB removes dead end if the article has at least one wikilink. However, some editors think the tag is appropriate if the article has one wikilink but needs more. Since the conversation at Template talk:Dead end#Question about template wording was not resolved, I don't run this task anymore.
- IIRC, so far I have removed only a few dead end tags, if any at all. Based on what you said, I think the dead end backlog is off limits then. Make sense, since it's pretty clear what needs to be done and editors can easily remove the tag. Jesse V. (talk) 16:02, 24 June 2012 (UTC)
- AWB removes wikify if the article has > 3 wikilinks or the number of wikilinks is greated than 0.25% of article's size. However, this tag has evolved to include more problems besides just a lack of wikilinks. While a
|reason=
parameter has been added to the template, many editors don't populate this parameter, so a bot can't tell why the tag was added. Even worse, AWB can remove the wikify tag even if the reason parameter says there's another issue. See Wikipedia talk:AutoWikiBrowser/Archive 23#Wikify tag for a discussion on this. Based on this feedback, I don't do this task via bot.
- Yes, I have seen AWB remove the tag if there's a reason parameter, and have always manually prevented it from doing so. In some cases, editors will leave their reasons next to the template, but commented out so you can only see them in the edit window. In those cases, I will look over the reason and the article, and then change to a better tag such as Lead missing or cleanup. I'll be more careful here, but I think there are tags that are more appropriate. If Wikify has evolved as you say, then it's reasons should overlap with other templates such as cleanup. Most of the articles I've been removing wikify from have looked decent. Jesse V. (talk) 16:02, 24 June 2012 (UTC)
- AWB removes orphan if the article has more than two incoming links. There don't seem to be any objections to this logic.
- OK. Maybe I'll tackle the backlog of orphaned articles then. Jesse V. (talk) 16:02, 24 June 2012 (UTC)
- Wait, are you sure that removing obsolete Orphan tags is all right? I read User:Magioladitis/AWB and orphans which was written in January 2011. Wikipedia:Orphan#Criteria says to only place the orphan tag if the article has ZERO incoming links from other articles. Are you sure that AWB removes orphan if the article has >2 incoming links? I didn't see this under Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/User_manual#General. I'd be happy to tackle the backlog here. I just wanted to know if the community wouldn't object if I tried to run AWB over Category:All orphaned articles and remove orphan tags when there was >2 incoming links. I really want to be helpful and tackle backlogs, but I don't want to get into trouble. Jesse V. (talk) 18:14, 24 June 2012 (UTC)

- That's great, because I started BattyBot at the most recent tags and worked through March 2010! I've stopped my bot, since there's no point in both of use reviewing all those old articles. If you could send me the list (e.g. post it in a sandbox), I'll use that for the bot. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 16:33, 28 June 2012 (UTC)
- A better idea: here's the file itself. Right click on it, save it onto your computer, open it with AWB, and you're done. 3519 articles. The list includes articles tagged in March 2010. I ran across Category:Pages with DEFAULTSORT conflicts and realized that AWB might be able to help with this. Certainly AWB won't be able to resolve the DEFAULTSORT conflicts automatically, so it's necessary to turn off all the skip options and whatnot. However, it's an important category to resolve, and according to AWB there's only 46 namespace articles that have issues. I'd like to see this taken care of, but it's a bit tricky, and I don't know a lot about DEFAULTSORT, so I need some advice/instructions, or I'd appreciate it if someone more experienced and knowledgeable could help. Remember, articles in this category can sometimes crash AWB; AFAIK that bug still remains. Jesse V. (talk) 05:35, 12 July 2012 (UTC)
- I looked at two of these articles, and I don't see what value AWB would provide:
- Attack on Derryard checkpoint has and . In this case, it might be best to revert the addition of the second DEFAULTSORT and ask the editor to discuss it on the talk page.
- There is only one DEFAULTSORT on 1967–68 Mersin İdmanyurdu season. The other one is embedded within . Some discussion would need to occur to determine where the DEFAULTSORT should be. (I'm guessing that if you remove the DEFAULTSORT from the article, AWB general fixes would readd it.

Who'd I link?
Can AWB crawl every diff in my entire contributions history, and generate a list of every http:// or https:// link I've ever added or changed in Wikipedia? My memory of a particular source has failed me, and nothing is jogging my memory, but I'll know it when I see it. The results could be saved under User:Lexein/Allyourbase, or put on Dropbox and the DL link emailed. If not where would I go to request such a tool be created? --Lexein (talk) 00:36, 18 August 2012 (UTC)

- You can certainly find what references or links are there but not necessarily which ones you left. I guess if someone knew how to code it from the API it might be possible to do a custom module but it wouldn't be an easy thing. Kumioko (talk) 01:47, 18 August 2012 (UTC)

- It's easy to generate a list of every page that you've edited, but AFAIK, AWB can't get the specific diffs. I wonder if WikiTrust might be helpful. I have that installed on my account, and it can highlight everything that you've touched in a particular article. • Jesse V.(talk) 04:28, 18 August 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks everyone. I tried AWB, and was surprised to confirm that downloading what it calls "User contributions" only saves base article wikilinks, (in duplicate in CSD format) but not the diff URL. It makes me wonder if the diff URL is available to AWB, but is being tossed out. Oh well. I get that AWB is very focused on per-page operations.
- Next question - is there a tool (not AWB) that permits extremely rapid paging through 20 or more diffs at a time from a User's contributions? I imagine such a tool exists. If I have to keep a local copy of a dump, that's okay too. --Lexein (talk) 05:41, 18 August 2012 (UTC)
- On the last question, yes. It's called downloading Google Chrome and opening 20+ tabs at the same time. :P • Jesse V.(talk) 06:11, 18 August 2012 (UTC)
- Heh - ultimately, I don't want to study diffs, but to search and create a list showing which of my 10,000 edits (not pages) contained specific text. A true by-user contributions search. It's my fault for not being a WP API or database maven. --Lexein (talk) 07:41, 18 August 2012 (UTC)
- If you left a descriptive edit summary for the edit in question, the User Edit Summary Search tool may be useful. MANdARAX • XAЯAbИAM 20:16, 21 August 2012 (UTC)

All dab pages into AWB
More of a question then a task. I'd like to load a list of all the disambiguation pages (Category:All_disambiguation_pages) into AWB. There are 216 thousand pages. Anyone have any idea? I want to typo check every page but using the load from category I'm limited to only 25,000 pages. - Change category to "All disambiguation pages" and click the Make List button
- Without closing AWB, login as Sun Creator

- I manually finished off that list. Haven't yet looked to see if there are more. 7&6=thirteen (☎) 18:02, 1 November 2012 (UTC)
- Looks like there are about an additional 400, more or less. 7&6=thirteen (☎) 18:33, 1 November 2012 (UTC)
- By substitute, I assume you mean
Schepman
, right? —Theopolisme 22:18, 1 November 2012 (UTC)- Yes but don't overlink. Be forewarned, there are also a few articles that have "Schepman" in them, and they don't actually have anything to do with the subject of this article and aren't connected to Mattheus or his work. 7&6=thirteen (☎) 22:26, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

- Thanks for those, Sun Creator! Any idea what's going on with Project TypoScan? Braincricket (talk) 20:26, 25 October 2012 (UTC)
- It seems no one but User:Reedy knows how to update the TypoScan data and he is either unwilling or unable to do so. Regards, Sun Creator(talk) 22:17, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks for these! I'm importing lists 10 and 11 right now to work on those. -download ׀ talk 05:21, 1 November 2012 (UTC)
- Has anyone gone through lists 10 and 11 already? Don't seem to be picking up many typos out of the lists... any lists that still require editing? -download ׀ talk 00:22, 3 November 2012 (UTC)
- Breno has been doing them today, see Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_TypoScan#Articles_with_typos. Regards, Sun Creator(talk) 18:57, 3 November 2012 (UTC)

Introduce links
Wendell Mobley -> Wendell Mobley now that he has an article. Likewise for John Jarrard -> John Jarrard please. Ten Pound Hammer • (What did I screw up now?) 05:56, 3 November 2012 (UTC)

Where I Come From -> Where I Come From. Page moved and I want to make sure all the links are changed. Ten Pound Hammer • (What did I screw up now?) 20:55, 13 November 2012 (UTC)

Replace links to MiszaBot
On article talk pages that link to User:MiszaBot, replace bot=MiszaBot| with bot=MiszaBot I|. (Example) MiszaBot was retired and blocked over a year ago, but the archive notices on many many talk pages still say that MiszaBot is archiving the page, instead of MiszaBot I who is really doing the archiving. It's a minor issue, but it had me confused for a minute or two. ~Adjwilley (talk) 20:52, 4 December 2012 (UTC)
- It's an awfully long list, and a link to the different varieties of MiszaBot is already available at user:MiszaBot. I personally don't see the need for that minor a change. —Theopolisme 23:56, 4 December 2012 (UTC)
- OK, I knew it was a minor change, but I didn't know how long the list was. It's no big deal. Thanks! ~Adjwilley (talk) 01:59, 5 December 2012 (UTC)
- It's about 1422 pages. Hazard-SJ ✈ 03:21, 5 December 2012 (UTC)

Template parameters
I'm looking for a tool that can change a few parameters at all article space instances of Infobox sportsperson. Please see also Template talk:Infobox sportsperson#Spouse parameter.
- Swap

→
- Add underscores

→

→

→

- If you added these to WP:AWB/RTP then AWB would process them as part of its general fixes. (I'm assuming there is already agreement that these parameter changes are needed) Rjwilmsi 08:22, 27 November 2012 (UTC)
- Going to add them there. And yes, there is consensus, hence my link to the talk page. De728631 (talk) 10:09, 28 November 2012 (UTC)
