Finding a source

Tips for finding a source yourself

Main page: WP:Find your source

• Send a request to the author(s) of research papers for a copy of their paper by email
• Check on Google Books, or your local library or national library may be able to obtain it through an interlibrary loan or subscription
• Search Google Scholar for archived copies of journals in institutional repositories

Note that sites like LibGen and Sci-Hub offer direct, free access to a very large range of publications, but there are legal questions around their use and neither the Wikimedia Foundation nor the Wikipedia community endorses them.

Making a request

• A request may be an open question or you may ask for a specific journal, article or work
• All kinds of sources are possible here: newspapers, magazine article, databases, encyclopedias, court decisions, laws, books, etc.
• We cannot perform full book scans requests due to copyright
• You may contact research helpers directly or make a request on this page
• To receive email without disclosing your email address publicly, configure your email in Special:Preferences
• Provide as much detail as possible: a full citation with author, title, publisher, and date or identifiers like DOI, ISBN ISSN, PMID, etc.
• Once a request has been fulfilled add the {{Resolved}} template.
• Filled requests are archived.
• Requests unfilled after three months will be archived

Fulfilling a request

• Anyone may offer advice and fulfill requests.
• Indicate which part or parts of the request is being handled so others do not duplicate your work.
• Notify (mention) the requester using {{ping|REQUESTER_USERNAME}}
• You can point to a pre-existing electronic document by giving its URL ( http://... ). You can share scans of pages or documents using a file-sharing service, provided it is legal, or by emailing the content to the requester.
• You can email a link or plain text to a requester using the Special:EmailUser feature but for attachments, you need to ask them to mail you first so you can reply.

Copyright tips:

• Respect copyrights and terms of services of any online services you use.
• Share content in a limited manner that is targeted at as few individuals as possible to achieve a specific improvement on Wikipedia. All content is shared under a presumed non-commercial, educational, fair use purpose in order to conduct research about topics on Wikipedia and/or to improve Wikipedia content.
• Share copies privately rather than with a publicly accessible link whenever possible. Copyrighted articles from print publications or copies obtained through online databases should not be uploaded for unrestricted distribution via open websites. Preferably, do not share login access codes for entire websites; rather, share only an individual copy of a resource.

@Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi: This book appears to be exceedingly rare. See WorldCat. The only two copies in the United States are in a university in New York (where it's part of a special collection - unlikely to be eligible for interlibrary loan) and a research institute in Los Angeles (unlikely to engage in interlibrary loan at all). I happen to be likely to travel close to one of those areas in the somewhat near future, so I'll see what I can do. This one will likely take a while, though. @Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi: Its definitely a reliable source. The reason it's so rare is that it was produced only to accompany one specific exhibition as a sort of extended program in a sense, from what I can tell. When the exhibition was finished, most copies were probably lost or destroyed. It doesn't appear it was ever publicly made available, so libraries didn't have a chance to grab it unless donated (as in the case of Binghamton). Certainly an interesting history attached to this item. ~ Rob₁₃^Talk 01:32, 17 February 2017 (UTC)

Országos Széchenyi Könyvtár has a record for what may be an earlier edition of the first book, from 1994-1996, three volumes. (Note that library entries in Hungary use ISO 9 transcription for Russian language titles and names.)

Times of Karachi was a short-lived English language paper and there are enough notable English papers who certainly will write something whenever something notable thing happens. Note: Gay and Lesbian Humanist archive is not accessible, with HTML error code 403. The printed edition is on stock at the British Library, for example. Unfortunately, I have lost my library card. In 1992, or so. And I'm not prepared to visit European non-EU countries. Can't wait till Theresa has thought it over ...

• Capital Gay, July 5th, 1985, pages 9 and 11, and the surrounding pages, if they deal with the striking miners' presence at London Pride in 1985, OCLC 952386189 (Online, with Gale Cengage access) and OCLC 724040251 (print).

Note: a few German libraries keep this magazine, but not the number in question. I have seen that Bishopsgate Library has it.

• Anonymous (?): Queer ICONS: Capital Gay. In: The Pink Paper, 12th July, 1996, issue 438, page 43, OCLC 786453370 for an electronic version (sorry, I couldn't get access through my library account), and printed volumes with OCLC 499864256 and OCLC 30618725. OCLC 724026813 lists the German National Library only, but they don't have the number in question. For the print version: ISSN 1472-3662.

• Алый Король, from 1865 to 1889, this newspaper was known as The Daily Examiner. Sadly the issue you need isn't available on either the Newspapers.com or Newspaperarchive.com. California Hist Society, San Francisco, CA has issues of this newspaper in original and the Library of Congress, Washington, DC probably has this issue in microfilm. A search for "Ah Toy" at Newspapers.com gives a good deal of results. I can create some clippings if you don't get the Examiner's 1881 issue. --Skr15081997 (talk) 04:28, 6 August 2017 (UTC)

@BU Rob13:, had a look into the ToC, actually it seems that this book is more (or less...) a book on the topic of parliamentary governemnt with special reference to Guatemala than the Guatemalian parliament itself (a problem I encountered not the first time while doing research on that topic. It seems that only page 51-59 deal with the history the Guatemalian parliament, and actually the bibliography turns out to be much more useful here, as it includes several title that could be interesting and are easily available. The East Anglia BGS Regional Geology Guide

Experts are divided on the dating of the Red Crag Formation, and I have corresponded about it by email with an expert. He approved the wording "The East Anglia BGS Regional Geology Guide, published in January 2016, dates the Red Crag to 3.1 to 2.5 million years ago, but the start and end are poorly defined due to the general paucity of age-diagnostic stratigraphic indicators and the fragmentary nature of the geology." This is unreferenced as he did not want his name used (and email correspondence is presumably not an RS anyway). I do not have access to the The East Anglia BGS Regional Geology Guide, and I should be grateful if someone who does could check whether it supports the above wording, and supply a page number. This article John Serry Sr. has a lot of off-line references to the New York Times. I am wondering if these are reviews or upcoming event listings. I would appreciate any help to link these online, or in finding out if they are advertisements or legitimate journalistic work. @Anne Delong: The two NYT citations from the 1930s are advertisements that identify an orchestra, leader, and venue, but don't mention Serry. Searching for "John Serry" returns only one NYT news story (as opposed to display ad) that is cited in the article: "Diseuse in Debut Here", 1 March 1942, p. 36. It makes a passing mention of Serry: "Assisted by Lou Cooper, pianist, and John Serry, accordionist, ..." Email me if you would like a copy. Dear Ms. Delong - Thank you in advance for your thoughtful analysis. The references in question (i.e. to the New York Times) might actually serve a useful purpose for prospective researchers of the future. Consequently I would advise against removing these references without first considering the following analysis. While there can be no doubt that the presence of an "advertisement" does not unequivocally substantiate the occurrence of a historical event in the same manner that a reference from a newspaper article, it is equally clear that its presence in an authoritative source such as the The New York Times does serve to increase the probability of a correct citation for the subject matter described in the article. It would seem highly unlikely that noted professional musicians and the promoters at professional concert venues such as Radio City, the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel or the Plaza Hotel in New York City would allocate substantial time and resources in order to advertise concert performances on specific dates and times in an authoritative source such as The New York Times in a fictitious manner, while actually scheduling another performance on exactly the same date and time at another concert venue, or perhaps even more improbably --failing to schedule a concert performance at all. In addition, the administrators of such noted professional schools of the era (such as the Biviano Accordion Center) could hardly be expected to advertise their course offerings and the noted musicians on their faculty for purely frivolous reasons. In addition, while these references may not actually cite the name of each of the artists performing within the orchestral ensembles cited in the article, they do serve to substantiate and document the existence of the musical ensembles in question during the time period referenced within the article. In addition, one could hardly expect an advertisement to provide a compete listing of the members of an entire orchestral ensemble during this period of time (1930's - 1940s) i.e. before the advent of the Web. In so far as these references serve to document and substantiate the existence of the orchestral ensembles cited within the article, they provide a useful function by providing credible documentation for the contextual framework of the article itself. In the "ideal world" such citations would provide the specific names of the artists and perhaps even a critical review of the performance itself. One should keep in mind, however, that during while World War II raged in the late 1930s and 1940s, resources

were scare and the allocation of space within periodicals was limited. Consequently, as researchers we must be grateful for the citations and references which we are able to salvage under such unique circumstances. With these observations in mind, I would encourage you to refrain from deleting such useful reference citations in the days ahead. @Drmies: This journal seems to be available in quite a number of German libraries, although not in mine, unfortunately. I recommend you ask at de:WP:BIBR/A, the German equivalent of this site.

Hint: there’s definitely a typo in the title: it should be verschollener (lost). Also, Geschichtsblätter should be rendered …blaetter when the Umlaut is not available. Cheers ✦ _hugarheimur 20:13, 27 September 2017 (UTC)

Re-entering request for chapter of book

I ordered a cheap copy of "The Italians" by C. J. Shane on Abebooks, and closed my previous request. Then I was notified that my order had been cancelled, and when I went back to Abebooks, suddenly the price of all the copies of that particular book had gone up. My life doesn't depend on writing this article, and I refuse to spend more than $10 on an old book. But if anyone has a copy of the book, and can scan the chapter on Angela Carlozzi-Rossi for me, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.
