Gut-brain axis edits
Hello, I've been working on the "gut-brain axis" page. I need help identifying the specific reasons my edits are being undone. This is a class assignment. Thank you very much! Thinkpins (talk) 23:59, 16 November 2021 (UTC)

Welcome—ask questions about how to use or edit Wikipedia! (Am I in the right place?)
• For other types of questions, use the search box, see the reference desk or Help:Contents. If you have comments about a specific article, use that article's talk page.
• Do not provide your email address or any other contact information. Answers will be provided on this page only.
• If your question is about a Wikipedia article, draft article, or other page on Wikipedia, tell us what it is!
• Check back on this page to see if your question has been answered.
• For real-time help, use our IRC help channel, #wikipedia-en-help.
• New editors may prefer the Teahouse, a help area for beginners (but please don't ask in both places).

Minute Physics article

I noticed something strange. While the Minute Physics article is located at Minute Physics, the talk page is at Talk:MinutePhysics. Is this supposed to happen, or is it just a mistake? I am not very active, so as a courtesy, please ping me. Thanks! -322UbnBr2 (Talk | Contributions | Actions) 00:51, 13 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Unbinilium-322_Dibromide, the page was moved from Minute Physics to MinutePhysics in 2006 and back to Minute Physics in 2021, but this time the talk page was missed. I've put in a move request to fix this. MB 01:10, 13 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I think they should both be stylized as MinutePhysics, unless there's something I'm missing. I started a discussion on the talk page for those interested. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 01:21, 13 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

This has to do with the deleted article Harold F. Reichenthal. I wrote that article in its entirety. It has numerous footnotes with my sources. An administrator has deleted it under the false allegation that I copied the text from a cooyrighted source.

• I copied nothing from the article in question. They copied from a draft of my article I sent them. None of my footnotes are on their site. I am offended that my word is apparently not accepted on this.
• Even though that site copyrighted their page, that does not give them ownership of my words. I granted them a non-exclusive license to publish my writing. The exact passage is quoted from their site if you go through the history of the communications from this administrator to me.
• The history of my sandbox page on this article can be consulted here: [1]
• If this still constitutes a copyright violation, I would appreciate being explained why this is so.

If this is the wrong place to post this, please direct me to the correct place.

We need to have documentation that shows the copyright holder has given permission for the material to be copied to this website. Wikipedia has procedures in place for this purpose. Please see WP:Donating copyrighted materials for an explanation of how to do it. There's a sample permission email at WP:Consent. Once the consent email has been cleared by the Volunteer Response Team the content can be restored. — Diannaa (talk) 12:23, 13 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

How to edit the notes section

Hello,

I am trying to edit the notes section on Wikipedia's page "List of British Monarchs". The notes section inaccurately states that King George V and Queen Mary were crowned on May 22, 1911, when in fact they were crowned on June 22, 1911. I am having difficulty editing the notes section to fix this inaccuracy. I would appreciate help in resolving this issue. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MLatt (talkcontribs) 15:53, 13 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@MLatt:  Fixed! In the future, you can click the "Edit source" tab at the top of the article, search the source code for the incorrect text, make the change, and click "Publish changes". Happy editing! (Please remember to sign your posts on talk pages by typing four keyboard tildes like this: ~~~~. Or, you can use the [ reply ] button, which automatically signs posts.) Need help related to (re) publish an article (now in Draft) to Romanian Wikipedia (previously I have published by mistake) in English Wikipedia ...

I am a beginner ... :) I have created a new page in the Romanian language to be posted on Romanian Wikipedia. But (somehow) I have published it into English Wikipedia and someone (Liz) moved it into a draft and nicely suggested translating it in the English language. I've written back about my need but maybe she is busy...

So, I need help to: 1) publish my page into Romanian Wikipedia 2) cancel/delete (become sure) about the (wrong) attempt - toward the English Wikipedia

And right now I have no idea who will do what and when ... I am thinking about making a copy (*.txt) of the script (from the current draft) and creating a new page (with a different name) and publishing into Romanian Wikipedia.

This is the page ... in discussion (in fact exist 3 pages, made at once and all moved by Liz - back in draft): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Rezerva%C8%9Bia_Natural%C4%83_Complex%C4%83_Snagov

Thank you for your time & kindness, Constantin Turmac

Note: meantime, I (also) search for tutorials etc.

Constantin Turmac (talk) 16:12, 13 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Constantin Turmac: Hi there! You can go to you can go to https://ro.wikipedia.org/ to create an article on the Romanian Wikipedia. To delete Draft:Rezervația Naturală Complexă Snagov, you may add Db-author to the top of the page. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 16:44, 13 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)@Constantin Turmac: Your idea will work. Use copy/paste to create *.txt files, one for each article. Then, switch to the Romanina Wikipedia, and for each file, hit (the Romanian equivalent of) "create" with the appropriate Romanian article name, then paste the *.txt file, and then hit (the Romanian equivalent of) "publish". Three caveats: 1) We here at the English help desk don't know a lot about the policies and procedures used on the Romanian encyclopedia, which is a separate project. 2) In the strictest interpretation of the rules, you should add an attribution statement on the talk pages of your new Romanian articles that states that they were copied from the English encyclopedia (draft) articles). 3)the Romanian Wikipedia may not have exactly the same template names and categories, so you may need to make some modifications. -Arch dude (talk) 16:46, 13 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Merge WikiData entries

I was trying to link fi:Luokka:Ilmestymästä lakanneet suomalaiset aikakauslehdet with Category:Defunct magazines published in Finland but WikiData wouldn't let me, saying they were two separate WikiData entries (https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q25224902 and https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q9926582). WikiData said the entries should be merged, but I still don't know how to actually do it. Merging entries on WikiData is still far too difficult for me. Could anyone help me by providing step-by-step instructions? JIP | Talk 00:39, 14 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@JIP: I suggest reviewing the documentation at Wikidata, such as d:Help:Merge. Hope this helps, and happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 00:46, 14 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I tried to use the Special Merge Tool. It failed right from the start. The error message was:
Failed to merge Items, please resolve any conflicts first.
Error: Conflicting descriptions for language he.
Neither of the entries seems to have any description in the Hebrew language (what I assume "language he" means). Merging two WikiData entries still seems to be far too difficult. JIP | Talk 00:59, 14 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Apparently they do after all. I don't understand any Hebrew. Perhaps I'll just remove the Hebrew descriptions or copy-paste one to the other. With my luck, it will complain about some other language after that. JIP | Talk 01:01, 14 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I've done the merge. * Pppery * it has begun... 01:26, 14 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. For future reference, did this involve using the Special Merge Tool after fixing all the conflicting descriptions or did you do it in some other way? JIP | Talk 01:28, 14 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I used labelLister (a non-default gadget on Wikidata) to remove the conflicting Hebrew description, and then used the standard merge tool. There were no other conflicting descriptions. * Pppery * it has begun... 01:42, 14 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
According to Google translate the he descriptions were Category page and Category in Wikipedia, so presumably the longer one was correct. By the way, sv:Kategori:Nedlagda finländska tidskrifter merged without problems. TSventon (talk) 01:46, 14 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Contacting editors

Where does one go to invoke or appeal to an editor for actions by another editor, e.g., being banned or ending a revision war? 2601:14A:503:64C0:D9FA:8D4F:AFFD:63A7 (talk) 14:57, 14 November 2021 (UTC) Formerly user ileanadu.[reply]

Hi there! Banned users should follow the instructions on their user talk page if they want to appeal a block or ban (which I don't see on User talk:Ileanadu). For revision wars, start a discussion on the article's talk page to develop consensus. Hope this helps, and happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 17:04, 14 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Linda Chamberlain — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.207.126.63 (talk) 02:51, 14 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Linda! When using a newspaper article as a source, you don't need to upload the article - you can cite it instead. It is common to use cite news for this, but you can also format it manually by providing the newspaper name, article name, date, page number, etc. See WP:EASYREFBEGIN for more details.
However, you should not edit any article about a family member because it is a conflict of interest. Instead, you can post a suggestion on the article's talk page with the request edit template to have another editor evaluate your suggestion. Or, you can use the Wikipedia:Edit Request Wizard. Hope this helps, and happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 03:27, 14 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
We do not currently have an article on Mr. Catalano. Are you trying to start one? If so, please be aware that WP is not a memorial site: see WP:MEMORIAL. It is instead an Encyclopedia. Each of our articles must be about a notable subject. If Mr. Catalano is not notable by our definition, we cannot support an article about him. See WP:N. You can probably find a more suitable place on the Internet for this information. -Arch dude (talk) 04:24, 14 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Personal

How can I create a Wikipedia page for myself without paying hundreds of dollars. I am terminally ill and don't have a lot of time. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.215.151.41 (talk) 16:54, 14 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, you probably don't. WP:AUTO strongly discourages autobiographies. Creating a new article is one of the hardest things to do on Wikipedia, especially when you have a conflict of interest (COI). To learn how to edit, you could view Help:Introduction and The Wikipedia Adventure. You would then gather independent reliable sources that have provided significant coverage of you, and determine whether you meet Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, called "notability". If so, you could create an account and declare your COI on your user page. Then follow the instructions at Help:Your first article, and be prepared for a process that would include months of waiting, rejections, and rewrites, before an article is created. If you are successful, then you could never edit the article directly due to your COI. Hope this helps. GoingBatty (talk) 17:15, 14 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hello IP, Wikipedia doesn't ask for money for creating an article on someone. It all depends upon how much notable you are that you get a page on yourself created. And, that's neither about the money nor about the subject's own request. Lightbluerain (Talk | contribs) 17:18, 14 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Also, companies that ask for money in exchange for promising to creating an article about you are likely to be a scam. GoingBatty (talk) 17:30, 14 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Paying hundreds of dollars isn't going to help you get a Wikipedia article. If you are notable enough, someone will come along and create an article about you for completely free. Anyone who asks you for money to create a Wikipedia article about you is a scammer and is going to cheat you. Stay well away from them. JIP | Talk 18:18, 14 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry for your illness. But Wikipedia is not a memorial site: it is an encyclopaedia, which records subjects which meet its own definition of notability - broadly, that they have been written about by people who have no connection with them, and published in reliable sources. Unless you meet those criteria, then there will not be an article about you, any more than there will about me. Sorry. --ColinFine (talk) 19:54, 14 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Repairing insufficient attribution to an article that has changed title

My original problem concerns tlwiki, as it has had many, many articles that have insufficient attribution. However, I am putting this here because there is a larger community here. The question here is: Which article title do I use for attribution when the article was translated/copied before the title page (e.g. translations from when Climate change was titled Global warming)? I just thought I'd want to clear things up. Thanks, Caehlla2357 (talk) 03:00, 15 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Caehlla2357: Hi there! The guidelines and policies at tlwiki may be very different from those here at enwiki. I suggest you ask at the tlwiki Help desk, or at the talk page of the article in question. Good luck! GoingBatty (talk) 03:15, 15 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, yes. Of course. But as a general guideline (for future reference here at English Wikipedia), what is it? Thanks, Caehlla2357 (talk) 03:17, 15 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
When I do this, I usually use the current page title. I think that is consistent with the advice at WP:RIA, which gives a sample edit summary of NOTE: The previous edit as of 22:31, October 14, 2015‎, copied content from the Wikipedia page at Exact name of page copied from; see its history for attribution. – so for example, directing people to the history of Climate change to see the original contributors of the copied content. The history of the article will also contain a record of the page move. DanCherek (talk) 03:31, 15 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
What I had done is mention both the current and the former name. But I think you may be right. Thanks, Caehlla2357 (talk) 14:55, 15 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Fixing a bug in a template

I'm looking at this page: Truth_in_Video_Game_Rating_Act

The page currently says: "Enacted by 109th congress"

The box that's filled out says: "Introduced by=109th"

These are two substantially different things and they need to line up.

I don't generally need nor want permissions to edit templates, so how and where can I ask for this to be fixed?

By being something of more significance than 'a new rock band': See Wikipedia:Notability (music). Get written about enough by relevant secondary sources, and somebody (not you: see WP:COI) will probably start an article. Template transclusion?

Hello, I copy-pasted Template:Xxxx-larger block from Wikisource along with its documentation. When I added the documentation for it, it created a documentation page for smaller block template. Perhaps it is because of the "template tranclusion" line in it. I don't know what transclusion is. Can anyone please check and tell if I did it the right way or not. Lightbluerain (Talk | contribs) 17:46, 15 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Lightbluerain: The reason is that Wikisource:Template:Xxxx-larger block uses the same documentation page as Wikisource:Template:smaller block. I have moved the en.wp documentation to Template:xxxx-larger block/doc. Also, please remember to provide proper attribution when you copy CC-BY-SA–licensed content in the future. Hello, Ram Dhaneesh. I too edit with mobile devices, but I use the fully functional desktop site, which works just fine on current mobile devices such as smartphones. Just scroll to the very bottom of any page in mobile view, and you will see a link to switch to the desktop site on your mobile device. I have written an essay that you may find useful, User:Cullen328/Smartphone editing. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 03:55, 16 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks @Cullen328: to have a concern on my question. I too tried desktop to editing option, it is doing well. My problem is not on desktop version, is there any issues on visual editing option in Wikipedia. Because most of the time I used visual editing option, that is my request. Even after updated my device/Chrome/Google, it doesn't work properly. Thank you!

Some tables are built with templates and cannot be edited properly with VisualEditor. Which table are you trying to edit? PrimeHunter (talk) 06:44, 16 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Ram Dhaneesh, desktop VE worked for me but not mobile VE (on older iPad with Safari/iOS 12). I haven't tried other pages to find out if it's a general problem or just that one page. Can't see anything odd in the wikitext source code. ⁓ Pelagicmessages ) 21:49, 16 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Please unblock this account - I have been hacked

Dear Wikipedia

Please unblock this account. I have been hacked. The contributions under this name are not what I have done. Please advise so I can set up a new account with a new password from my computer/IP address. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Adam30 (talkcontribs) 10:47, 16 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Adam30 Your account has only one edit that was made in 2010(other than this posting here). Did you use a different account? 331dot (talk) 10:49, 16 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

NEW Thanks for your reply. I don't know how to reply to you so I'm just updating this comment. When I go on my "Talk" page there are lots of notifications that I have been blocked and also that apparently my account has updated various other Pages - not me doing that!

Please advise how to unblock. Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Adam30 (talkcontribs) 10:59, 16 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

No, your user talk page at User talk:Adam30 contains no warnings or block notifications. Were you trying to use a different account, or to edit while logged out? --David Biddulph (talk) 11:04, 16 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Adam30 Are you certain the issue is on this version of Wikipedia and not another language version? 331dot (talk) 11:08, 16 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Do you get these messages before you login? It's possible someone else on the IP address you're using has been vandalising Wikipedia (if you're in a public place, then many people would share the same IP address). Joseph2302 (talk) 11:15, 16 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Identifying opinion pieces

I know opinion pieces are not reliable. I thought only those which are mentioned as opinion pieces as this article is an opinion piece, but administrator Ohnoitsjamie removed this article as an opinion piece which was not mentioned by the website as an opinion piece. So, which should be seen as an opinion piece, other than those which are directly posted under the opinion piece column? I did not ping him, as I am not disagreeing with him. --ZebraaaLounge (talk) 11:34, 16 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

• I am not sure why you posted the link to one Washington Post opinion piece and the general link for the New York Times’ opinion section, but not the actual URL of the contested article.
While the article is not an opinion piece, it does not impress me as a piece of great journalism or neutrality, and looking at the perennial sources I find that the Times of India is not considered reliable especially due to bias favoring the current government. Despite my abysmal knowledge of Indian politics, I know that sectarians tensions between Muslims and Hindus is a political topic there, so I would agree with the removal of the source, though not for the exact reason Ohnoitsjamie gave in their edit summary. I acknowledge that it's not labeled as an opinion piece; however, my main objection was the material it was attached to in the lede. That is, the lede should succinctly summarize a topic, and if we're going to make any broad statements about the topic, they should be sourceable to more than one reliable source. Duplicate Citations

For the page Ben Porat Yosef, I tried to cite the source for the data about the number of students and faculty in the info table. I used the same source for multiple stats, so I copy and pasted the reference (the visual editor doesn’t work for tables). However, instead of simply using the same reference like it usually does, it created two separate occurrences of the same cited piece. How to I fix this? A. Rosenberg (talk) 14:08, 16 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Asher Rosenberg: I added ref code to the two US News sources. The code you added was for different refs. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 14:29, 16 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I just updated my own entry and WTMitchell reverted the changes as they appeared to him unhelpful. How do I have my changes accepted? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 154.27.115.197 (talk) 15:02, 16 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Keep in mind that without an account, we have no way of knowing that you are who you say you are(not that I disbelieve you, just saying). Nevertheless, you should not edit the article about you directly in most cases, please see the autobiography policy; if you have changes to propose, please offer them on the article talk page, Talk:Sander Gilman, in the form of an edit request(click for instructions) Preferably, the article about you should summarize what independent reliable sources say about you, but please offer any suggestions for changes that you have. 331dot (talk) 15:11, 16 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

citing references

I have an article which is up for deletion if I dont insert reliable references. I have this one that when I cite it it has a broken link or something? Im a bit confused. https://mickmagic.net/NeilCrud I would be so grateful if I could have help with this please. As it could mean deletion :( Its for the article Neil Crud Thanks in advance FlowerMoon593 (talk) 16:26, 16 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Theroadislong, I have noticed you appear on everything that I ask/draft/edit I would appreciate the opinion of someone else as I feel it is biased coming from yourself over and over again.

FlowerMoon593 (talk) 16:38, 16 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

That link is an interview so confers zero notability, others are welcome to chime in too, but you don't get to choose! Theroadislong (talk) 16:42, 16 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@FlowerMoon593: I agree with Theroadislong that the interview does not determine notability. I suggest taking a look at WP:RS for help on determining what is and isn't a reliable source to help determing an article's notability. ― Blaze The WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 16:44, 16 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
FlowerMoon593, it may help to realise that Wikipedia has little interest in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is almost entirely interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources. If enough material is cited from independent sources to establish notability, a limited amount of uncontroversial factual information may be added from non-independent sources. --ColinFine (talk) 17:02, 16 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, If it isnt notable then duly noted and I wont be using it. Thankyou. FlowerMoon593 (talk) 19:32, 16 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Linking

Hello,

Is linking to other pages on Wikimedia preferred over linking to the entity itself (i.e. Marshall Daily News linking to Media in Marshall, Texas rather than the actual Marshall Daily News site?

Does this depend on the quality of the Wikimedia page?

If the Wikimedia page is preferred can/should I put a reference note that leads users directly to the actual source?

Is there a reason to double link a place: Bar Harbor, Maine -- with Maine linked to lead just to the state entry or to Bar Harbor (Maine) which is the actual site under discussion.

If a webpage exists for a citation shouldn't it be linked rather than the Wayback machine?

I apologize if these questions are covered in any of the FAQs -- I couldn't find them addressed in this particular manner. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MAK999KAM (talkcontribs) 17:45, 16 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Fewer more specific links are preferred. So just linking Bar Harbor (Maine) is better than links to Bar Harbor/Bar Harbor (Maine) and Maine. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 18:00, 16 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I think I understand your questions. In order:
1. Yes, if we have an article or redirect about the topic. If we don't have an article, a red link may be reasonable and may not be. Under very few circumstances should you ever link to the topic directly in the main content of an article (see also how pages are laid out).
2. No, given the article exists. See #1.
3. No. We are not a directory.
4. We prefer the most specific topic if possible, so link the whole text to Bar Harbor. See WP:SEAOFBLUE.
5. "If it exists" is doing a lot of work there, but yes. See also WP:Link rot.
Let me know if I missed something or you have additional context you would like to add. Izno (talk) 18:05, 16 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

edit box in article

Hello. In the article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbara_Corday, I made a correction in the text of the article regarding Ms. Corday's fourth husband, but I don't know how to edit the "box" on the right to add it there. Morris (talk) 18:59, 16 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Morris. That's called an infobox, and if you edit the source, you will see {{infobox person at the top of the article, and you can edit the parameters within that. See Template:infobox person if you need more information about what the parameters should contain. I have no idea how you would do this with the Visual editor, as I have hardly ever used that. --ColinFine (talk) 23:32, 16 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Malwarebytes Browser Guard Warning

For what it's worth: today (for the first time ever) I'm getting a repeated "Blocked by Browser Guard" warning from Malwarebytes (installed on my PC) of possible malware activity on the Wikipedia Main Page when I click my standard bookmarked link to Wikipedia (via Firefox, if it matters).

I've taken a chance and "Continued to site" anyway to leave this message, and suggest somebody investigate the matter. It may of course be a false alarm, but it seems odd that a long-established security program would make such an error with such a prominent site as Wikepedia.

I'm not so far seeing any signs of unusual activity on my system, but I am emphatically not an IT expert. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 90.205.225.31 (talk) 19:21, 16 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I'd suggest running a system scan on your entire PC to see if for whatever reason Malwarebytes missed some Malware and has infected your PC. I have a feeling it's a false alarm though. ― Blaze The WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 19:28, 16 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Citing Mythlore with two-season dates

I want to cite Mythlore, which uses seasonal dates (eg Summer 2021), but sometimes two seasons are listed (eg Spring/Summer 2015). According to Cite journal, which refers to Help:Citation Style 1#Dates, this should be acceptable, but I'm getting a red message: "Check date values in: |date= (help)", as here:[1] (I have cs1-maint messages displayed). Am I doing anything wrong?--Verbarson (talk) 21:34, 16 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The solidus as a separator in dates is not supported by cs1|2 so there should be no documentation to the contrary; if there is, please tell me where that is so that it can be corrected. For season ranges, write |date=Fall–Winter 2015.
