COTW vs. FAC

I appreciate your comments on the Programming language FAC. However, I'm confused about the comment re. COTW. Is there some formal relationship between those two things? I didn't see anything about the collaboration stuff that said, e.g. "Don't FA nominate an article while it's a collaboration". However, given the millions of words written about WP procedures in various places, it's quite possible I missed something. If it really is a rule, I guess I'll remove the nomination for now... but could you give me a pointer, if so? LotLE×talk 19:05, 19 June 2006 (UTC)

I have gone through and performed a pretty serious copyedit... I also added a large number of {{fact}}s. It's important to remember that this article is about NeXT, not Apple, so I removed a lot of statements about OS X that weren't directly related to NeXT's software contributions. Peer reviews

Um, about [1], I prefer manual peer reviews and agree that automated peer reviews are definitely no substitute for ones by thorough peer reviewers. Unfortunately, no person has the near-infinite amount of time to carefully peer review articles at WP:PR; the last time I tried I got through some ~30 articles and yet more articles were being submitted everyday. Semi-automated PRs allow newer editors to get a taste of what featured status requires and help to remind experienced editors of small formatting issues, and yet can be executed extremely quickly. I guess if you find them a bit annoying, you can delete my comment(s) (I won’t mind), but outside of that I can’t give too much other assistance. AZ _t 16:41, 16 July 2006 (UTC)

RE: Apple II images needing deletion

Actually, both me and Carnildo used to be admins. I resigned some time ago, and Carnildo's was taken away and then he failed "re-election". You can use interiot's edit tool and other things to determine the status of users (although due to the database it is sometimes out of date). Sorry for the trouble and I've forwarded your request to User:SlimVirgin who I know is a good admin and sometimes handles things in this area :) RN 23:21, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

Regarding the Apple II article, I have a question: Does VisiCalc always need to be placed in italics? Ann Saunderson

Wackymacs, I'm not sure why you would revert my wikification on the Ann Saunderson article. Was it a complete wikification? No, it wasn't. Did it improve the article? I feel it did. Instead of simply reverting, why not improve what I had already begun? As it stands now, I'm going to leave this one for someone else, rather than begin a revert war, or even worry too much about it. You seem to be an experienced and helpful editor, so I wonder if you could check out the above mentioned FAC and see if I am being totally unreasonable in having nominated the article 3 days after it failed its previous nomination with 4-2 or 66% support. I did so because the only actionable objection had been the prose, which was then dealt with in the intervening three days by a variety of editors, but mostly DaveOinSF. I've been railing against editors having far too high standards, but as someone who doesn't hang out a lot on WP:FAC, I may simply be unlucky. I have a couple points:

• Early history states their first product was a "toolkit", Whats a toolkit?
• "The first major source of venture capital was Ross Perot"... umm do you mean "first major source of outside investment"?
• What does NeXTWORLD magazine have to do with anything?
• "Hardware" section doesn't flow at all, It jumps from time periods and jumps from pre-release information, specs, aftermath, hype, etc. Just arrange it by; What was happening during it development?, What were its specs when it shipped?, What did people say about it when it shipped?, What things happened after it shipped? and lastly you can add that bit about it impacting the programers careers.

Thanks for adressing my concerns, I have a couple more:

• This sentence seems unecessary in this article, since you talking about the company. I dont see the point to discuss the chip itself on this page. It would be more appropriate on the NeXTcube/Motorola 68030 pages: "The 68030 was supported by the 68882 FPU for faster mathematical performance, the 56001 digital signal processor (DSP) for multi-media work and two custom-designed 6-channel direct memory access (DMA) channel controllers, which allowed much of the input/output (I/O) processing to be offloaded from the CPU to boost the speed of common tasks."
• There is a red link NeXT RISC Workstation in the article. This isnt the NeXTstation workstation, is it?
• I also dont see the point of throwing this sentence at the beginning of 'Hardware', it would be more appropriate at the end of the section: "The 88110, a later chip released in 1990, was used in the NeXT RISC Workstation, however the project was canceled along with all NeXT hardware projects in 1993.".
• The arranging is getting better, but try to remove present tenses from the hardware specs paragraphs like "shipped" because it still doesn't flow from past to present. You say "shipped" in paragraph 4, but only in paragraph 6 do you actually say they were released. My point above was all about this, try to make the article tell a story from past to present, like a history book.
• I'm having a hard time understanding the deal with the "NeXTWORLD" magazine since it wasnt published by NeXT but Integrated Media. Was the magazine about the NeXTcube or was it sponsored by NeXT? Please elaborate.
• That first paragraph in 'Software' seems like it needs to be merged appropriately with 'Hardware'.

Hi Wackymacs. I've been tracking down overly promotional addition of external links to articles by Kanagasingam. I see you created an article about him back on 2006-09-23 that currently reads like a link farm (which is not how you created it). The only links I've found related to Kanagasingam seem to be written by him. Though the Rajkumar Kanagasingam was posted by me to the wikipedia originally but wrongly as a newbie (and still feel so), it was actually created by Wackymacs[4] and subsequently shaped by others [5], [6], [7], [8] and [9].

After they all have given notability for Rajkumar Kanagasingam only, I started to shape the Rajkumar Kanagasingam.

The Daily News of Sri Lanka [10] is a Sri Lanka's National Newspaper since 1918 and the widest read newspaper in Sri Lanka and overseas.

Rajkumar Kanagasingam has published articles over the years and the following articles [11], [12], [13] and [14] are available online since 2002.

Though the articles have been written by the subject Rajkumar Kanagasingam, the facts he has mentioned in those articles might have well accepted by the populace without any complaint before he published the next article over the years and might have established some credibility within the Editorial circle as well.

I wonder why those articles can't be considered as Reference for Rajkumar Kanagasingam.

The Press Release in Daily News [15] could speak for Rajkumar Kanagasingam's association with leading Sri Lankan and international personalities and adding notability for Rajkumar Kanagasingam.

The US State Department's Office of Weapons Removal and Abatements "Safe Passage" Newsletter carried a news[16] on "Night of A Thousand Dinners" which was organised jointly by Asian-German Sports Exchange Program and PDIP, A Think Tank which was founded by Rajkumar Kanagasingam.

As the PDIP's Secretary-General, his activities in the available publications (on-line) will speak for his achievements.

All of his above attempts are substantial enough for a fair testimony for his notability among Sri Lankans and gives weight of his book German Memories in Asia which is about-to-be-released.

Ezine Articles may be "Vanity Press" but the contents in most of the articles by Rajkumar Kanagasingam are falling in the lines of well-researched and well-documented articles than those of mere Search Engine Optimization (SEO) ones.

Some of the linkings might be Link Farms as I am a newbie of mere three months, but you should consider few of the internationally prominent people I have so far created and those have been left out in the wikipedia so far, especially Dr. Gamani Corea and others.

I have spent lot of my time to keep Dominic Jeeva from deletion with rest of my creations Arumaipperumal and Pandara Vannian which are not falling into the Link Farms.

The Internet is introduced after the mid nineties and still most of the news items are not falling into the web-world. By expecting reference for testing a person's notability with on-line reference materials might be some times misleading where the particular persons' references are mostly in off-line media archives.

Internet is mostly weighing a person's prominence based on the Internet availability in English and few other languages and not in all other world or local languages.

I don't have any objections if suitable and appropriate deleting Rajkumar Kanagasingam from wikipedia, but my kind expectation is at least wikipedia should attempt to have a survey among Sri Lankans through its available means whether Rajkumar Kanagasingam is prominent enough or not among Sri Lankans.

Anton Balasingham

Thousands of Tamils in London and from overseas paid their last respect to Anton Balasingham, their one time hope for peace in their home land and the LTTE’s theoretician and chief negotiator at Alexandra Palace in north London[18][19][20].

Balasingham’s casket was placed at the front of the Palace’s Great Hall was escorted in by an honour guard, white gloved and dressed in black suits. After a brief initial ceremony, where hundreds of Tamil activists around the world participated by placing flower petals on Balasingham’s body, followed by a long line of families with children, youth and older Tamils and distinguished personalities internationally.

While paying respects, many wept openly, others prayed and some lifted their young children so they also could place petals. Community organizations from across the world have sent representatives and they placed dozens of wreaths and bouquets alongside the casket. While one said ‘Voice of the Nation’, the title bestowed on the LTTE theoretician by the movement, another said ‘Uncle’, the title by which many LTTE cadres used to address him affectionately.

Thousands of people from far away places arrived in several coaches and flights from Switzerland, France, Canada, US, Australia, Norway and Germany were waiting outside the venue on a freezing cold day and the queue snaked back from the Great Hall.

Balasingham was cremated shortly afterwards at a private ceremony leaving the people for whom he was fighting for by his intellectual wisdom.

Criterion 9 of the Wikipedia:Fair use criteria states that "Fair use images may be used only in the article namespace. Used outside article space, they are not covered under the fair use doctrine." The creator of an article should do the research and show notability, not the administrator. Your article basically said that she was an American pornstar, and nothing more, you can't expect others to write the rest of it.

If you are saying it was deleted too quickly, why not write the article first and save on wikipedia when complete? As an experienced editor, you must be aware that many one-sentence "biographies" remain exactly that. As saved, it was clearly a candidate for speedy deletion. I think you misunderstand - the criterion is not whether the subject is notable, but whether the article establishes that notability - as I said, you can't expect others to do the research and add sources for you. I can't understand why you are making so much fuss about a one-sentence article that must have taken you 30 seconds and no research to write. I note your minor correction on my talk - I didn't reply before because you seem unwilling or unable to accept any responsibility for your edits. You can create an article in your word processor and copy it complete into Wikipedia, but you seem not to accept that a single sentence without sources or evidence of notability is subject to speedy deletion (for which you should refer to the guidelines).

If you do not expect others to do the work for you, you can't rely on clairvoyant admins to divine your intentions. Infoboxes

Could you explain what the rationale behind these boxes is? They are ugly and needlessly reproduce information already in the text (such as the year of birth and death). They are silly - how are Fawn Brodie's husband and children relevant to her career as an academic and writer? And most important, since the information there is so abbreviated, they encourage putting forth one's point-of-view. Is Brodie an author or an academic of some sort? If she is indeed an author, perhaps she is more accurately described as a biographer. Or, if one wishes to emphasize her academic career, perhaps she is an historian. Or maybe a political scientist. Tough choices, all because someone insists that a whole life be put into a Procrustean bed of at most five words.

This is all arguments against. Now, since you put the box back, could you explain what the arguments in favour are.

An editor is continuously vandalising my Bio over dispute related to Talk:Anton Balasingham. The editor tried hard to delete my Bio from wikipedia. You can see the evidence here(1) and here(2)' The editor is taking an undue interest over my Bio and deleted over Citation. I have restored the information. I requested an Administrator to check my Bio whether Citations are enough. I also taken this matter for Request for Comment.
