Welcome—ask questions about how to use or edit Wikipedia! (Am I in the right place?)
    • For other types of questions, use the search box, see the reference desk or Help:Contents. If you have comments about a specific article, use that article's talk page.
    • Do not provide your email address or any other contact information. Answers will be provided on this page only.
    • If your question is about a Wikipedia article, draft article, or other page on Wikipedia, tell us what it is!
    • Check back on this page to see if your question has been answered.
    • For real-time help, use our IRC help channel, #wikipedia-en-help.
    • New editors may prefer the Teahouse, a help area for beginners (but please don't ask in both places).

Changing the shape of the Contents list

Is there any way to change the shape of the Contents list? What I mean is instead of having a very tall ToC, Id like to make it extend it horizontally instead. Heres a crummy example of what Im looking for. --Ekoi (talk) 00:09, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

WP:EIW#TOC has some links, but probably not to exactly what you seek. It's worth seeing what Wikipedia users have done so far with compact TOCs, however. That might give some clues about what it would take to implement what you're after. You're not the first to ask for something like this on the Help desk. --Teratornis (talk) 00:48, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

    template help

i'm creating a template with code like this:

    {| class="infobox bordered" style="float:right; width:264px; font-size:90%; text-align:left;" cellpadding="3" |- ! colspan="2" style="font-size:110%; text-align:center; background-color:#D1DBDF; color:#000;" | {{{name}}} |-

    |}

    which looks like

    {{{name}}}

now i was wondering how do i add a part of the template to make it look like this

    {{{name}}}
    {{{other}}}

but i want {{{other}}} to be hidden and only appear if something like other=yes is used, allowing everything under {{{other}}} to appear as well. i dont want html in the code though (<td></td>, <tr></tr>)--Necky998 (talk) 02:00, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You can make a pair of rows conditional just like a single row. See also m:Help:Table#Conditional_table_row.--Patrick (talk) 15:34, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

    Images

Can you use images from Google Images? Mm40 (talk)

Usually not. "Google Images" doesn't produce any images itself; it's just a search engine to find images on other Web pages. Most images on the Web are copyrighted and are not available under a free license, so they are not acceptable here. For more specific questions, try the image copyright help desk. —Bkell (talk) 02:36, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
We have a {{Google images}} template you can use to link to Google Images search, but the template is not suitable for articles. In general, links to search engines violate WP:EL#Links normally to be avoided. However, you can use {{Google images}} on talk pages and on pages in the Project: (Wikipedia:) namespace (such as this Help desk page) if a Google image search is relevant to a discussion. --Teratornis (talk) 04:49, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

    Deletion review

Can deletion review be used to contest nonarticle (such as an image) deletions or do they have to go elsewhere? NanohaA'sYuriTalk, My master 03:23, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

    Nope, that's appropriate. Deletion review can be for images, templates, categories, articles etc..etc.. Wisdom89 (T / C) 03:59, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

    Renaming a Page

The Help: Moving page mentions two manners by which to change the name of an article: renaming and moving. This page only describes show to move a page in order to change the name, but not how to simply rename it. I am interested in only renaming as the name of the article is clearly mistaken. Moving it seems unnecessary in such a case. Supertouch (talk) 05:14, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Moving is the only way to change the page's actual title. There are processes to fool browsers into displaying a different title, but moving is the only one that actually changes the name. Master of Puppets Call me MoP! 05:18, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Help:Moving a page says: The terms "rename" and "move" mean the same in this context. They just refer to different models for picturing the operation. "Rename" and "move" are just two words for the same operation in Wikipedia. The term "move" is used more often and the button to do it is called "move". There is something wrong with my account. Whenever I want to edit, it says "Sorry! We could not process your edit due to a loss of session data. Please try again. If it still doesn't work, try logging out and logging back in." AND at the same time, it logs me off so that I need to log in again. I am not able to make any edits when logged in (User:Aminz). I have tried this over a variety of articles and talk pages and it is always doing the same thing. --76.126.116.57 (talk) 08:16, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It may not have any affect, but try purging your cache. It appears to be a bug that is affecting other users as well. There's a current post about this at the Village pump technical with at least three users saying they are experiencing the same problem. Unfortunately, I don't have any solution for you, but it's best you know it's not exclusively an issue with your computer.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 09:12, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the reply; I cleared the cache but it didn't help. It is still keeping me out. I have never experienced such a thing before. Hopefully it will be fixed by tomorrow. --76.126.116.57 (talk) 09:22, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

How to export a page with prefix 'Special'?

Does anyone know how to export a page such as 'Special:Contributions/UserID' or a history page of a certain page?

I found it wasn't work when I type 'Special:Contributions/Abhaac' into the text field of page 'Special:Export'. The returned xml file just contained the information of site and namespaces. Thanks. Abhaac (talk) 10:17, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Exporting applies to stored pages only, not to pages created on the fly. The content of a special page can be stored on the same or another wiki, but plain text only, no links: copy the result and put pre-tags around it.--Patrick (talk) 11:54, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
However, most of the information in special pages (including contributions) can be accessed via the API; see http://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php. --ais523 11:57, 4 March 2008 (UTC)

    notibility?

im am writing an article on myself, Stephen McKeever, all in the article is true and non-biased yet, the article is saying that the aticles notibility is questionable, i do not understand how to make this notible? could you pleases assist me. Thank you, Stephen McKeever —Preceding unsigned comment added by Smck125 (talkcontribs) 10:28, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Stephen, and welcome to Wikipedia.
First, I can see that the "Its notability is in question" phrase can be misleading. What's being questioned is the notability of the subject of the article - in other words, it's questioned whether you are notable (i.e., famous enough for to be included in an encyclopaedia). As I have no understanding of motorcycle racing, I'm not someone who can judge. However, to establish notability of yourself (or anyone/anything else), the usual rule is that there should be multiple, non-trivial references to an article's subject.
Second, there is actually a principle on Wikipedia that, generally speaking, people should not write articles about themselves as there is the potential for bias, even if unintended. See Wikipedia:Autobiography.
    Hope this helps.--86.149.56.123 (talk) 11:10, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
If you're not notable enough for Wikipedia, everyone is notable enough for WikiBios. --Teratornis (talk) 23:17, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

To copy an image from another website to Wikipedia, you would have to download it from the website to your computer, and then upload it to Wikipedia using the "Upload file" link such as on the left of this page. HOWEVER...in general you're not allowed to do this as most images on the MOD site are Crown copyright - see this.--86.156.182.128 (talk) 20:16, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have read the articles on copyright laws and tags etc. and all the pictures i have uploaded belong to me, and there are no copyrights against my pictures, how can i change the status of my pictures from 'speedy deletion' as they do not conflict any copyright issues? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Smck125 (talkcontribs) 12:36, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That depends on what right you want to give to your images... If you want to put them in PD (public domain) replace the speedy delete template with {{PD-self}}.

For other licenses, check this page: Wikipedia:Image_copyright_tags

Just replace the speedy deletion stuff with that tag and it should be fine.. oh, and maybe if those images are free.. you might want to consider uploading them to the Commons instead of Wikipedia, if thats not what uve been doing already ;)

Hope that helps.. --Yzmo talk 12:45, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

    Notability (people)

Does this guideline apply to images or just to articles? Vivio TestarossaTalk Who 13:31, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

    • The notability guidelines don't apply to images. There doesn't seem to be a speedy criterion for the image you've linked to, but you can IfD it as an orphaned image, if your intention is to get it removed. AndyJones (talk) 13:43, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I just entered the title of a page in the text box and un ticked the first option which says "include only the current version not the full history".

I am flummoxed and don't know what to do. My entry, a bio of Ilia Kulik (under Ilia Kulik) was removed because it's on www.kuliks-krew.com. I am the writer of the original bio. I have posted it both here and on Kuliks-Krew (I am the President of the group). So someone took it down for copyright violation. But if you try to contact that someone, it gives you a warning that the IP is at Harvard and used by lots of folks. How can someone take it down and not be responsible or contact-able. Please restore it. I have already had this go-round with photos and I've given up with those even those the photographer has give express permission for them to be up on Wikipedia but the copyright police keep taking it down no matter what I say.

I would like the bio restored and the IP from Harvard blocked. Thanks.

    Willowway (talk) 20:13, 4 March 2008 (UTC) Willowway[reply]

    (Nancy Hall)

At the moment www.kuliks-krew.com has a copyright notice prohibiting reproduction of content without permission. Thus User:140.247.131.86 was acting quite rightly in defence of your copyright, for which he/she is certainly not going to get blocked. If you control the website, then all you have to do is add a note there saying that the text is released under the GFDL. You can then add it to our article again, and no-one will delete it (at least for copyright reasons). Note that, with text as with photos, a 'permission to use on Wikipedia' license is not sufficient: Wikipedia has to be freely usable by others, which means text has to be released under the GFDL. Algebraist 20:28, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That's a bit misleading. The fact that Willowway licenses the material in a proprietary way in one place does not mean that, as the copyright holder, she(?) can't also license it via the GFDL somewhere else. The FSF's FAQ on the GPL says this explicitly, and I see no reason why the GFDL would be any different. It's exactly analogous to the way that MySQL AB licenses their database both under the GPL and under a standard commercial license for those who want to do things the GPL prohibits.
Willowway ought to be able to do exactly what she is trying to do, and it's unfortunate (and reflects badly on Wikipedia) that this has been prevented.
Unfortunately I don't know what best to suggest; you might try re-posting the material together with an explanation on the talk page (and "see talk" or similar in the edit summary). But I well appreciate the dispiriting feeling that the citation-and-copyright pedants tend to leave in their wake, so I understand if you can't really be bothered to do that. 81.187.153.189 (talk) 22:43, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Anyone claiming copyright must prove it. We can't just take somebody's word for it that they own the rights. There have been too many cases where the copyright claims have been proven false (especially with images). Corvus cornixtalk 03:23, 5 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

    Newsweek Wrong?

I had previously found an article on newsweek talking about yahoo! and it had a small mention of yahoo's beginnings; information that was not in wikipedia. I decided to add the information and correctly referenced my addition. However, the addition was reverted by someone who said that Newsweek was wrong. Do I stay quiet and let others steamroll my research? I respectfully asked the person to back up their findings, but they would not refer me to anything else. For more information about Wikipedia, see Wikipedia:About and Wikipedia. If you have never edited on a wiki before, Wikipedia can be pretty confusing at first. If you have read some books and you would like to help write articles about them, see Wikipedia:WikiProject Books and Wikipedia:Notability (books). If you like the idea of collaborative editing on a wiki, but you aren't ready to contribute to an encyclopedia, see WikiIndex for several thousand other wikis catering to a wide range of interests. Wikipedia is the world's best-known wiki, but by no means the only one, and probably not the most appropriate wiki for lots of people, depending on what they want to write. --Teratornis (talk) 03:27, 5 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

    Page division

    • First, thanks again,Teratornis, for the advice you gave me a while back on advanced editing sources. It's proving very helpful in writing my first article.
    • I can't find an answer to this, though: I want to put two columns of text on my User Page in the "Useful Links" section. The one on the left will be the Wikipedia Links that I've already listed - the other column on the right would be External Links. (I checked Help desk archives and searched all the Editor's commands with Control-F, but no joy.) Retarius | Talk 04:08, 5 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I gave an example of how to do this on your userpage. There are other ways. If this isn't what you want just revert. Cheers.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 04:44, 5 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It's good that you tried searching before asking. With enough practice, you can find the answer to almost any question about Wikipedia that has an answer, because people have written, somewhere, about almost every important editing issue. (When they haven't, then you could be the first to write about some topic. A cool aspect of Wikipedia is that everything we do to help ourselves here can also be useful to other people, so Wikipedia is like a giant system of Pay it Forward. We benefit from all the work by people who came before, and we add our little bits to the knowledge pile to help the next wave of people.) Search the Help desk for: column finds several previous questions and answers relating to your question. That search also finds a number of results that aren't relevant, but some relevant results do appear on the first page, and they are recognizable from the sample text that Google displays. If you don't find results from your first attempt to search the Help desk, try again with different terms, fewer terms, or more general terms. Some things can be pretty hard to find, however, for example when you don't guess the particular synonym people have used to describe a particular topic. But the more you read the friendly manuals, the more you learn Wikipedia's jargon, and the better you get at searching. You'll know you're making progress when you can answer questions on the Help desk even though you don't know the answers when you first read the questions. --Teratornis (talk) 20:49, 5 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Unethical Use of Volunteers (adm) for FAN CLUB BIOGRAPHY

TO WIKIPEDIA FOUNDATION: RE: Unethical USE OF "VOLUNTEER" STATUS (adm) for WikiPedia to GUARD "FAN CLUB" VERSION of "Actors" for PROFIT***

IT has recently come to our attention that several fan clubs are making money off the WikiPedia Biography and "Presidents" of those "Fan Clubs" are requesting "volunteer" (adm) status to "guard" the page for monetary gain. Most Notable is the WikiPedia Page created for actor "esai morales" by a volunteer using the id "Black Kite" or several other "names". This "volunteer" (adm) used his "volunteer" status to "block" any negative facts and writes absolute "psychotic" jibberish.

Please refer this matter to WikiPedia Board to prevent the unethical use of "volunteers" (adm) for "Fan Clubs" and Profit. Specifically the "esai morales" page and the comments by the "volunteer" (adm) "Black Kite" or his other ID's and Terminate his "volunteer" (adm) status with WikiPedia fo prevent future unethical and bizarre use of "volunteer" (adm) status for "fan club" Page.

    Adding a Business Listing

I was wondering what your policies and procedures were regarding adding a business listing to your encylopedia that has when the organization was founded, it's mission statement and pictures of the owners, etc... I've seen it for other businesses and wanted to add one myself. I also don't understand how to select a category for such a listing. Is there a generic business category or is it based on what the business does, etc. Thanks for you help and if I missed a posting that already documents such procedures please forward me the link. Wikipedia is not a directory. We do not have "listings." Our editors are encouraged to create articles about notable companies, organizations, etc. There are many other wikis out there which will accept "listings" for even the smallest of companies; but we restrict coverage to those which are considered notable. For further information, read WP:COMPANY. (And please note: we have firm restrictions on conflict of interest and attempts to advertise oneself on Wikipedia.) --Orange Mike | Talk 14:32, 5 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

    Use of Wikimedia photo images

Our professional education organization is a 501c3 organization and publishes a series of 12 books for students studying music history. We would like to use some Wikimedia composer images in these books. The books are sold at a price slightly above the production cost, but are not intended to turn a big profit...just pay the bills.

I understand these images are copyright free and available for us to use. Is this correct? Robertag (talk) 19:40, 5 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Everything on Wikipedia should be free for commercial use. However, people upload copyrighted work all the time. So, just being on Wikipedia doesn't ensure it isn't copyrighted. It only means that it should not have copyright restrictions. -- kainaw 19:56, 5 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Basically that means that you should check the source & license info of each image, which should be on its description page.. Yzmo talk 20:19, 5 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Very little is actually copyright free (public domain). All the text is released under the GFDL and most images are released under the GFDL and/or Creative Commons licenses. For both the GFDL and CC licenses, some form of attribution is required. Some images however are still fully under copyright protection but used under the doctrine of fair use and you should verify that this will still apply for your books (if they're educational, it should) but these tend to have further restrictions. Mr.Z-man 04:59, 6 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

    Crediting piracy groups with releases

Has a precedent ever been set here? I'm against it, since ego is a motivating factor and to provide named credit is clearly to stroke that credit's owners'. This is the edit that raised the issue; it was a major event, but I don't think the impact of a release should come into it. --Tom Edwards (talk) 19:57, 5 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure, but a precedent might have been set with the whole "AACS encryption key controversy" fiasco. In other words, if there's a reliable source out there that confirms what the group did, then there should be some mention of the group in the article.--TBC!?! 22:04, 5 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Was there ever a discussion about it? It isn't a very strong precedent if nobody ever thought to question it! :-p --Tom Edwards (talk) 22:16, 5 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
There was a discussion over the "09-f9-11-02-9d-74-e3-5b-d8-41-56-c5-63-56-88-c0" numbers, and whether or not adding it would simply be publicizing the numbers further. It's a Streisand effect sort of thing.--TBC!?! 04:48, 6 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm pretty sure what you're talking about is the placeholder used in infobox templates, so is only there if someone puts it there. To put an image in an article, you use [[Image:Example.jpg]] with various options as described by Wikipedia:Picture tutorial, or you look for the infobox and read up on how a picture goes into that. However, speaking of the image you uploaded, Image:Mark anthony 2008.jpg, you have not specified a source for the image or a license, which means that I've had to tag it and it will be deleted in 7 days unless you can give the appropriate information (and given that this is a picture of a living person, it will need to be releasable under a free content license). If you need help with that, leave me a message on my talk page. Confusing Manifestation(Say hi!) 22:37, 5 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The pages at Help:Starting a new page and Wikipedia:Your first article should have most of the information you need. Before you begin, please carefully read through our policies and guidelines on notability, citing reliable sources for verification, neutrality, and formatting and article layout, where many new users commonly make mistakes. What article? Guerilla Marketing Talk Radio? You'll need to add reliable sources to verify assertions of notability in the article...--TBC!?! 04:45, 6 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm going to work through this bit by bit. First, I assume you're talking about Guerilla Marketing Talk Radio, and the prior version which had three ls in Guerilla. As of my writing this, the 3 l version was speedily deleted as spam, and the 2 l version has had the same tag placed on it. Secondly, you don't own articles on Wikipedia, so technically it isn't "your" article (but I'll let that slide because it's easier than saying "the article I wrote" all the time). Thirdly, it was protected by User:Orangemike because it has been deleted several times, and you have recreated it several times, which is generally considered disruptive. The idea is, presumably, that once it's deleted this time the title will be protected from recreation. I would advise you to read up on the criteria for speedy deletion, particularly A7 and G11, the inclusion guideline for businesses, the Wikipedia Business' FAQ, and for good measure what Wikipedia is not and Conflict of interest on Wikipedia, and then perhaps try creating the article in a personal sandbox - e.g. User:Henslee57/GMTR - if you feel it can be written to satisfy the inclusion guidelines without sounding like an advertisement or press release for the station. Confusing Manifestation(Say hi!) 04:46, 6 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
And I forgot to say that once you've written it in your "userspace", to seek some external feedback to see if it really is likely to survive once it's moved into article space (which will probably require you to go to Deletion review to get the title unprotected). Is removing a legitimate warning posted on your talk page allowed or not? I was under the impression that it was not permitted. I ask this as I posted a warning on a user's talk page, but that user removed it. When I restored the warning with a message stating that it was a legit warning and that it should not be removed, it was removed again. -Zomic13 (talk) 03:41, 6 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's generally seen in very bad taste to delete stuff on one's talk page, but it's their talk page and they can do whatever they want with it. Paragon12321 (talk) 03:48, 6 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It is completely acceptable for users to remove warnings from their talk page. This is considered to be an acknowledgment on their part, as they have to have read it in order to have removed it. The guideline on this can be found here. LaraLove 04:23, 6 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I am referring to the page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ragtime_composers

As someone who knows a bit about ragtime composers, I have noted an incorrect link on the above page. The link to Rich Egan goes to a person who is NOT the ragtime composer. I verified this by email from the composer, Rich Egan, himself. He does not at this time want an article on himself, and I am not prepared to write one. Apparently, the problem was created because someone provided the list using the code

and it simply links to the one article by this name, but it is not this particular Rich Egan. The simplest thing would be to take the link out, but I assume this list is set up so that names without articles can have them created. I did read the article on disambiguation, but it wasn't exactly clear what to do about this situation. Kind of a newbie trying to get into modest correction of inaccuracies.

    Jandris (talk) 04:09, 6 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'd suggest linking it to Rich Egan (composer). The link will be red, but if somebody feels like making that article they can. Generally, the more popular figure has the actual page, and other people by that name have what they're notable for in brackets in their article title. Hope that helps, Master of Puppets Call me MoP! 04:14, 6 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Type the name of the article you want to create in the search box, click Go, then if no page with that title exists, click the red "Create the page" link to start editing your article. You have to be a registered user to create an article and the article must follow Wikipedia's guidelines (WP:ORG, WP:RS, WP:V). Also, since you're creating an article about your own company, be warned that it's potentially a conflict of interest.--TBC!?! 09:45, 6 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The first method that comes to my mind would be to create extra namespaces that are editable by your registered users, and viewable only by them. Your users could edit all they like in their namespaces, which would function like a giant sandbox for them, and then you the moderator could decide when to copy their edits to the (main) article namespace on your wiki, which for example you might make viewable to the world but editable only by your admins. An equivalent method would be to set up two separate wikis, the first one for aggregating content from your users, and the second for presenting your sanitized version. (Because MediaWiki was not at all designed with fine-grained access control, sometimes it is easier to set up multiple wikis to achieve different kinds of access control.) That may not be exactly what you requested, but it should get you to a similar result. I'm not sure why you would want to operate your wiki this way, however. You can always block or ban people who don't conform to your rules. Wikis work the way they do because years of practical experience have shown what tends to work best for collaborative editing. Are you approaching your wiki with preconceived ideas about how a wiki should work, or is this coming out of your own years of personal experience with administering wikis? --Teratornis (talk) 07:45, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

See the documentation for {{Infobox U.S. County}}. There was no US census in 2007. If your number is from another source that year then use census estimate yr instead of census yr. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:23, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The latest consensus date you could use would be 2000 for that link to work. GtstrickyTalk or C 00:24, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I made the link blue; there was another parameter in case there isn't an article for the census year. Cheers, Master of Puppets Call me MoP! 00:25, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The population estimate was from the Wake County government, so I guess it's appropriate to use in the infobox even though it's not from the actual U.S. Census. I'm trying to get that article to G.A. status, so thanks for the help. AgnosticPreachersKid (talk) 00:49, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Is not allowing students to go to the bathroom legal?

Today in many schools teachers are not allowing their students to go to the bathroom. For example, in my school my teacher says we are not allowed to go because a handful of students broke a bathroom rule. Is it right to punish all the other kids? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ryanmcdono (talkcontribs) 01:23, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know if any laws cover this, and it depends on where you live, but I don't think it is a gross violation of basic human rights. In the future, please ask questions that aren't about using Wikipedia at the reference desk. Cheers, Master of Puppets Call me MoP! 01:28, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

    Somebody erased a talk page.

    Isn't that vandalism? How do I undo it? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:List_of_podracers Superstarwarsfan (talk) 01:35, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's unacceptable for an anonymous user to do so - however registered users may blank their talk pages if they feel they've acnowledged the warnings/comments. Wisdom89 (T / C) 01:37, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ideally article talk pages should not be blanked. The closest is archival, but blanking (aside from removal of mass spam/vandalism) is not allowed. Of course, there are exceptions (office actions, oversights). Master of Puppets Call me MoP! 01:39, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
(e/c)It was the talk page of an article. I've restored it, but Superstarwars fan, you could have done it to. Just go to the history tab at the top, and select "undo" next to the edit you want to reverse. Add an appropriate edit summary, save, and you're done. Practice in the WP:SANDBOX if you're curious. --barneca (talk) 01:41, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    See also Help:Reverting. PrimeHunter (talk) 02:40, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
In my experience, it is wrong to revert talk pages in all cases. This usually happens when a user has a lot of warnings. I blanked my user talk page today to cut away all of the Wikipedia newsletters that built up every week or two during my period of inactivity. In some cases, blanked talked pages can be grounds for reverting. Mac Davis (talk) 02:44, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Although the question was about an article talk page and has been addressed by Barneca and Primehunter, I feel I have to respond to Wisdom89's post about blanking user talk pages. The guideline Wikipedia:User page says "Policy does not prohibit users from removing comments from their own talk pages, although archiving is preferred. The removal of a warning is taken as evidence that the warning has been read by the user. Deleted warnings can still be found in the page history." I object to the statement that there is any difference between anonymous and logged-in users as far as this goes. There may be some specific types of warnings (such as a block notice) which state right in the warning that it's not supposed to be removed for a certain length of time, but whether the user is anonymous or logged-in should make no difference – I don't think any policy or guideline makes such a distinction. I don't quite understand Mac Davis' comment – not sure whether by "revert" you mean removing comments from a talk page, or restoring the comments after the user has removed them from their own talk page. The latter could perhaps be considered harassment or editwarring. –Coppertwig (talk) 03:30, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I believe you are correct regarding a regular anon user. However, if the anon is a dynamic/shared IP address belonging to that of a company or university and has received myriad warnings over many months, my understanding was that the warnings should stay for convenience. Obviously after sometime, when the page becomes excessively bloated, it may be archived, or the earlier messages removed. Is this more or less correct? I'd like to add an external link to the German entry "Augenmusik." [Here] it is, large as life. But it seems kind of klutzy to put it as an external link, when it's in Wiki. I've looked here on a Help desk archive, and then managed to figure out to use

    [[s:de:Augenmusik|Augenmusik]]

    and

    {{other languages|de|page=Augenmusik}},

but they both come up empty, so I'm obviously doing something wrong.

    Psoriatic Arthritis page

I don't want to get into editing wiki pages, I'm not an expert on anything. I have recently been diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis. According to my rheumatologist, some foods can exacerbate flare-ups. He's suggested an elimination diet to rule out foods that do not cause flare-ups.

Fine, did that. It sucked. But anyway, I seem to be sensitive to corn products. Yes, corn. Heaven help me, it's in everything, either as corn syrup or corn starch.

I am asking if one of your editors who is more knowledgable about nutrition in general could start (or edit an existing page) to include the different names that corn products can be listed as, as well as, any other foods that may be similar enough to cause similar reaction.

Not only would this be of benefit to those of us with corn sensitivities, but the other questionable food products that can cause flare-ups as well. It would be a great service to those of us surfing the net, hitting google and wiki, looking for more info about what kinds of foods to question in regards to daily pain.

    Thank you, and good day.

First, see our Medical disclaimer. Then read the Maize article (presumably you use the word "corn" in the American sense to mean "maize"). I don't see anything there resembling the list you seek of foods that contain maize (and such a list might violate WP:NOT#DIRECTORY), but the Maize#External links section might help. For example:

    Article marked for deletion

    Ref: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yours_Emotionally

    Dear Wikipedia administrators,

I am Sridhar Rangayan, director, co-writer and co-producer of the film Yours Emotionally [5] . I just read with great consternation the discussion about deletion of article on this film [6]. I am, frankly, yet trying to understand reasons for the dispute.

    1) The film has been made, screened, reviewed, distributed. So how can there be a dispute about its existence?

    2) The film has been reviewed by Variety- This definitely is a mainstream respectable publication ; Bay Area Reporter ; East Bay Express; India Currents ; India New England; Murphy's Movie Reviews ; New York Times This Link is working!

    3) News about the film features in prominent Indian newspapers, etc - Telegraph ; Hindustan Times ; Mumbai Mirror (Some links have been deleted, so links to their saved jpeg images are provided) Upperstall ;

    3) It has screened at more than 10 festivals - both queer (Frameline, NewFest, etc) and non-queer (IAAC, Seattle, Prague Bollywood Film Festival, etc):

    • Tasveer - 4th Independent South Asian Film Festival, Seattle, USA. October 6, 2007; 7.00pm

    [7]

    • Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center- The Village, Renberg Theatre, Los Angeles. Jan 24th, 8-10pm

    [8]

    • Santa Fe Film Festival. Santa Fe Film Center, Santa Fe, USA. December 14, 7.45pm
    • Yours Emotionally! (Rialto Filmtheater, Amsterdam, Netherlands.). November 5, 4.45pm
    • Sixth Annual IAAC Film Festival (Maya Deren Theatre, New York, USA.). November 4, 6pm

    [9]

    • "A MILLION DIFFERENT LOVES!?" (Gdansk, Poland). November 2-4, 2006
    • "A MILLION DIFFERENT LOVES!?" (Lodz, Poland). October 22; 10.30 am
    • Prague Bollywood Festival, Prague. October 15; 8pm

    [10]

    • Fire Island Fim and Video festival. Sept 13th - 16th 2006.
    • Frameline 30 - San Fransisco International LGBT Film Festival 2006. Sat, Jun 24, 6:00 pm -Roxie Film Centre.
    • NewFest 2006 The 18th New York LGBT Film Festival. Fri, Jun 9, 5:45 pm -AMC Loews 34th St Theatre 10.

    [11]

    c) The film has been distributed by a reputed distributor Waterbearer Films and can be found listed on several sites like Amazon [12]; TLA Videos [13]; Netflix [14]; Green Cine [15]; Facets Multimedia [16]

The film is definitely a small budget indie film which doesn't have the backing of multi million dollar promotion and marketing, but it surely has a place in wikipedia. It is one of the few film that honestly depict the Indian homosexual scenario which still remains largely closeted. It is considered an useful resource for LGBT studies and indian queer cinema.

I request someone to please look at the above information and edit, modify the wikipedia pages of this film accordingly so that it is saved from deletion. I do not really know how all this information can be added to the wikipedia page, since I am not conversant with the formatting or appropriate langauge to be used. I hope someone helps out.

    Thanks and regards

There's no need to worry. The article's been kept, apparently. --TBC!?! 07:26, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
For future reference, making an argument to keep the article here doesn't help much. You should make your argument on the page discussing the deletion. -- kainaw 15:56, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Note that the discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Yours Emotionally was in July 2007 where there may have been fewer sources about the film. The discussion ended after 5 days and the article was kept. The article has the tag {{Unreferenced}} which adds the text: "Unverifiable material may be challenged and removed". The whole article is not going to be deleted because of that notice, but some parts might be removed if editors are unable to find a source for it. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:09, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, just noticed. All you'll have to then is add the references you've mentioned in your comment to the actual article. See WP:CITE for the details.--Tree Biting Conspiracy ♣§♠ !?! 17:03, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

    question about mathematic formulae support

I am running wiki system on my Windows-XP-based computer and has implemented the mathematic formulae support. Everything runs well except one testing formula as below:

    <math>\arctan x = {{\pi {\mathop{\rm sgn}} x} \over 2} - {1 \over x} + \sum_{x = 1}^\infty {{{\left( { - 1} \right)^k } \over {\left( {2k + 1} \right)x^{2k + 1} }}} \quad {\rm{for }}\left| x \right| > 1</math>

    I have checked the directory which stores the pictures of formulae. The image file of formula above was produced correctly, but not displayed correctly on the screen when I browsed my wiki site. Instead, it was displayed in the plain text like '\arctan x = {{\pi {\mathop{\rm sgn}} x} \over 2} - {1 \over x} + \sum_{x = 1}^\infty {{{\left( { - 1} \right)^k } \over {\left( {2k + 1} \right)x^{2k + 1} }}} \quad {\rm{for }}\left| x \right| > 1'. Could anyone help me about this bug? Thanks.:)

Note: I've tried other formulae and it works. That's really the point I confused. JnWtalk 07:38, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

How to set table max width

Is there a way to set a table so it grows no wider than 800 pixels (arbitrary figure just for example) on large browser windows, but resizes to 100% of smaller browser windows? I'm hearing some complaints about the default class="wikitable" width="85%" setting for a list of episodes, and I'm figuring the 85% setting might be short changing readers with small screens. / edg 07:56, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It seems better not to specify any widths. There is no reason to make the table narrower than the regular text.--Patrick (talk) 15:17, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. There's no way to set a maximum width that changes depending on the screen resolution, because the website has no way to access that information. If you just don't specify a width, theoretically the table will fill out as wide as it can without spilling over the side of the screen. Hersfold (t/a/c) 15:21, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

How can I create a dynamic wiki page

I am trying to create a section on a wiki page that's content is dynamic. Is there an extension or template that will, display the contents of a .txt file? I am hoping someone knows the answer to this as I have been searching the web for that last two hours looking for information on this. Basic goal is to place a text file in a directory, and have the contents displayed on a wiki page. The contents of the text file is a wiki formatted table. The txt file will change every day. Any help or direction will be appreciated. Thanks!

What would be the purpose? That kind of thing does not sound at all appropriate for Wikipedia, which is a reference work, not a newspage. --Orange Mike | Talk 16:27, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This is the help desk for Wikipedia. I guess your wiki uses the same MediaWiki software. If you are able to automatically update a template or other wiki page with the text then you can transclude that where you want to see it. Wikipedia has many bots which can make automatic edits but I don't know how to make them. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:43, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
