PlaceWare was founded in 1996 as a spin-off from Xerox PARC by Pavel Curtis[1], the founder of LambdaMOO, Mike Dixon (computer scientist)[2], David Nichols (computer scientist)[3], Richard Bruce (computer scientist)[4], and Bob Krivacic (computer scientist)[5]. PlaceWare created the first commercial web conferencing product.

In 2003, Microsoft acquired PlaceWare and renamed its core product Microsoft Office Live Meeting.
