What's the difference in type of filming used

Last night the NBC program 30 Rock was "Live" and the picture quality was different from the regular show. Was it the frame rate, progressive vs. interleaved, video in one and film in the other, or what? 20.137.18.50 (talk) 13:13, 15 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't see it, but presumably you got the right answer on the last guess: it's about the difference between film and video. 30 Rock is regularly shot on 35mm film. If you're watching a live broadcast you're not seeing film, of course, since film has to be developed, printed, etc. So the "live" show was broadcast live or previously taped on video, which looks very different from film. Video looks more "harsh" or "live" to most of us, so it's usually a bit jarring to see a switch from film to video. You'll see this occasionally on filmed shows, such as when they switch to video to show the viewpoint of a camcorder or surveillance camera; this was done several times on The Wire, for example. —Kevin Myers 14:20, 15 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
There's also potentially a difference in setup, e.g. single-camera setup vs. multiple-camera setup. (30-Rock is listed in List of single-camera situation comedies). With their usual single-camera setup, when you have a back-and-forth conversation (camera goes from Jack to Liz to Jack to Liz, etc.), each "half" of the conversation is filmed separately, with the lighting and camera positions being readjusted, tweaked, and optimized in between. With a live show or multiple-camera setup, you don't have that, so instead they use a "flat" lighting and "decent" camera locations which work best for using all the cameras simultaneously, which gives it a slightly "rougher" look. -- 140.142.20.229 (talk) 17:15, 15 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Btw, they did both live East Coast [http:// bit.ly/ cDOSa h] and live West Coast [http:// bit.ly/ blN2X Q] versions. Links can't get past the Wikipedia spam filter, so join up sections. Pepso2 (talk) 17:34, 15 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Also, live video won't go through post-production color balancing and cleanup, so it won't look at clean. -- kainaw 18:08, 15 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Where it gets interesting is when they use both in the same program. For one thing, British TV programs have often used film for exteriors and videotape for interiors. The "Larry Sanders Show" on HBO took a slightly different approach. The entire thing was filmed, except for the parts where the TV viewer is "looking through the camera" at the show-within-the-show. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots20:01, 15 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Along those same lines, but slightly off topic, I'm sometimes amused at the flexibility of TV shows, particularly older ones, when it came to interiors and exteriors. In M*A*S*H, sometimes the exteriors were really filmed outside, sometimes in a studio. The same army camp "feels" very different depending on which approach was used, but the audience doesn't notice or care. The crazy part is when the overall scene was filmed outdoors, but the closeups were clearly filmed in the studio. Funny when you notice it. Many old films did this too, of course—old Westerns often shifted to the studio for scenes aroud the campfire, for example—but people don't usually notice. —Kevin Myers 02:00, 16 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think it's too off-topic, as it's about filmmaking techniques. In the old days, the movie was more about the story than about the trappings. Using the same set of back-lot brownstone stoops in countless movies was a cost-savings, but as audiences became more sophisticated they started to notice, and the studios went for more expensive one-use location shooting and stopped using backlots and stock footage. Then there's John Ford, with his many films that put Monument Valley on display. I'm not so sure people didn't notice, they just accepted it because they knew "it was only a movie". You can get totally immersed in a movie's story and still know it's not "real". Movie "nitpicking" strikes me as being funny for itself. Of course there will continuity mistakes. A movie is an artificial reality, so it's going to have inconsistencies and oddities. Reality or "real life" is consistent, i.e. it's "real". That's part of why people react so differently to the countless "deaths" in movies vs. a real death that happens to be captured in film or photograph. I know what you mean about MASH, but it didn't really matter, as the story was the important thing. Star Trek, for example, was almost totally studio-bound, and when they would go outside in the bright sunlight, which casts harsher shadows (as with the episode where Kirk had to battle a biped lizard of some kind), the contrast is striking. And by the way, thanks to George Lucas we have another major difference, which is digital moviemaking. Maybe audiences can't tell when they've got the CGI going, but I certainly can. It may be sophisticated, but it still looks fake. P.S. They had campfires burning inside the building? Yikes. Presumably they had guys with fire extinguishers standing nearby, just in case. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots09:35, 16 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
My favorite example of what Bugs is talking about is The Sting. The film is set in Chicago, but in long outdoor shots (especially the scene where the Waitress Loretta is shot), it is so obvious that its a backlot in California because of the large, chaparall-covered hills in the background. --Jayron32 03:29, 17 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Spitting Image TV Show - Music

An item in the UK TV puppet series "Spitting Image" featured a puppet fly buzzing around various piles of rubbish/excrement. I'd like to know the name of the track used as background music, played on something like a kazoo to give a buzzing fly kind of effect.

Thanks, as ever, for your help Wikipedians!

I haven't seen it, but generally The Flight of the Bumblebee is quite common for this sort of thing. 109.155.37.180 (talk) 23:27, 15 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That's not it I'm afraid. There are some similarities but the piece I'm after has a much lighter, sillier, tone. I seem to remember now that it might feature somewhere in the film Shaun if the Dead, possibly towards the end. I'll see where that avenue leads. Thanks.

BadmanMonkey (talk) 13:04, 16 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Managed to find it via the Shaun of the Dead route; it's "The Gonk" by The Noveltones, in cas anyone else is interested - a masterpiece of cheesiness!

is this song progressive house?

Is the above and beyond remix of Tonight by Dirty Vegas from 2009 a progressive house? When i first heard it, i thought it was chris jones or deadmau5, and they both do progressive house. Is tonight dirty vegas above and beyond remix progressive house? 204.112.104.172 (talk) 02:53, 16 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I am not familiar with the specific track, but in general Above & Beyond are exclusively a trance act. → ROUX  02:57, 16 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, having listened to it on YouTube.. this is pure trance. A good DJ could include it in a prog house set if switching to a more melodic style, but is trance through and through. → ROUX  03:04, 16 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

When i hear the song, i instentaniously think of Chris Jones (a dj from connecticut who specializes in house and progressive house) and Deadmau 5 (also progressive house), doesn't really sound trance, has more of a chris jones then a trance element to it, know what i mean? That's why i'm asking. 204.112.104.172 (talk) 03:15, 16 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Trying to locate SF short story about robots and rapture

This question is actually two-fold. First, can someone help me remember a science-fiction short story? Nations use robot weaponry to fight their wars. The horn of Gabriel sounds and angels appear on the battlefields and take up the robots and weapons, leaving humans behind on earth.

Second, where is a good place to go on the Internet to answer questions like the one above?

Thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.174.20.60 (talk) 17:49, 16 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Here of course. Accept no substitutes. I remember the story. Humans use robot armies to fight the legions of Hell at Armageddon, while they sit back and watch. TVtropes says it was by Robert Sheckley, which sounds plausible considering his writing style. Still looking for the title. Clarityfiend (talk) 22:11, 16 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Here we go. According to somebody here, it's "The Hour of Battle" (1953). Clarityfiend (talk) 22:34, 16 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. The author is indeed Robert Sheckley, but the title is "The Battle." I think the story description at Dark Roasted Blend is mis-titled, since it more accurately describes "The Battle" than "The Hour of Battle" (which can be found at Project Gutenberg [1]. I located Sheckley's story "The Battle" in his collection Citizen in Space. The copyright page indicates that it was originally published in If Magazine in 1954. What Was That Book? is a pretty good place to ask, although you might need a LiveJournal account. 109.155.37.180 (talk) 01:06, 17 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The question's been answered, but I'd just like to point out a (let's say) similar story by Philip Dick: Second Variety. The West and the East churn out robots for WW3, make them autonomous for best performance, and everything goes quickly to hell when the robots start thinking for themselves. It was also made into a fairly crappy movie - avoid that, just read the story. TomorrowTime (talk) 09:04, 17 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Looking for an old program, possibly Nickelodeon...

I found it on YouTube once, it was of an old kid's sitcom of some kind, similar to Saved by the Bell. The main character dates a girl taller than him and begins to worry by fantasizing about her being giant. I can't remember what the program was called, but can someone find out the title of the program? It was not Ned's Declassified.--Editor510 drop us a line, mate 20:04, 16 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Are you sure it wasn't Saved by the Bell itself? There is one episode where Jessie daydreams about being enormously tall...I can't seem to find which episode, but it's possibly the first one, "Dancing to the Max". Of course that's not quite what you described, but similar. Adam Bishop (talk) 20:46, 16 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No, it wasn't. I remember in the video that there are a crowd of supposedly main characters standing on a street and then suddenly she shows up, but only her feet and legs can be seen bacsuse she's so tall.

I am good with voice actors, just give me the cast and i can look up their bios, find the show for you, and give you its name. Another thing you could do is to put the names of the characters in it somewhere, that's how i found out about the mighty bee. -- Anonymous, 22:23, 16 October 2010 (UTC)

The whole point is that I don't know any of that.
Could it have been one of the Degrassi (franchise) shows? It's been on the air in some form for like, ever... --Jayron32 00:07, 17 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

clear up about confusion between types of house

What is the diference between progressive house and electro house? Please provide a link to a popular song from both on youtube. Also, what's the diference between funky house and disco house? do the same for that too, i need to clear up this confusion, there's so many types of house, and it can get confusing when i hear about more and more types of house. I remember back in the 90s it was just like 3 types of house, now, in 2010, it is now a whole jumble of subgenres of house. please clear up the types i mentioned with youtube links. -- Anonymous, 00:22, 17 October 2010 (UTC)

Honestly, the differences between musical genres are very fuzzy around the edges, and when one gets to micro-managing the genres, such as identifying precisely the difference between funky house and disco house, is pretty pointless. It's funky house if it is a) House music which contains b) elements of funk music, while it is disco house if it is a) House music which contains b) elements of disco music. Funk and disco were not entirely mutually exclusive styles either, there were artists who clearly straddled the line between them. The sort of pigeonholing of artists or songs into increasingly smaller and more nuanced categories becomes impossible after a while. --Jayron32 00:31, 17 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Can you identify what types of house these videos are? www.youtube.com/watch?v=90vMpv5Xfes www.youtube.com/watch?v=cklQiNR-Uro www.youtube.com/watch?v=9SKdzvbp0FE www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWkL34iyv9Y That would help me quite a bit. -- Anonymous, 00:55, 17 October 2010 (UTC)

Happy house, handbag house, happy handbag house, hardbag house, town house, country house, house house, french house, french town house, charnel house, mansion house, the house that jack built, Bauhaus, slaughterhouse*, soggy house, all back to my house, animal house, Huf house, randy house, Hugh Laurie's House, Mouse in the house, Adam House, Hatfield House, the White House, the green house, Hunterwasser House and so on... Juliankaufman (talk) 20:18, 17 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • 1 to 5 obviously
  • Google for 'Ishkur's guide'. It provides a good overview of the major electronic music genres. In very, very general terms: progressive house is somewhat closer to the structure of trance inasmuch as it 'progresses' through a series of phrases to hit the peak of the song. Electro house is more 'electronic' sounding house with more lo-fi sounds, like electro. → ROUX  02:54, 20 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

How about helping people watch programs legally, which is what the OP actually asked about. 82.44.55.25 (talk) 19:56, 18 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

If the British DVD versions are available, one possibility that some US Britcom fans (and Japanese anime fans) use is to purchase a second DVD player, and re-set it to DVD region code 2. You have to be slightly careful in your purchasing decisions, but a fair number of DVD players can switch region codes, at least a limited number of times. If you have two players, one for Region 1/US disks, and one for Region 2/Europe&Japan disks, you can swap between the players without using up the limited region switching possibilities in each individual player. You also need to be careful to get a player that will successfully mediate the PAL/NTSC format differences. -- 174.31.221.70 (talk) 15:59, 18 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Damn, there used to be a complete archive by a dedicated fan of Screenwipe/Newswipe up on YouTube, and I seem to recall it was endorsed or at the least tolerated by Brooker himself. But I just went looking for it and the account has been deleted. Unfortunately they aren't likely to ever come out on DVD, because of the large number of clips from other programs and the ensuing rights issues. the wub "?!" 14:48, 19 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

sports host

Lets say if the city host a multisports event and decided not to host some of the sports like for Summer Olympics it cannot host canoeing, equestrian, gymnastics, modern pentathlon, and skating for Asian Games events due to its lack of facilities for that sports. does the host will get a penalty? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.29.33.186 (talk) 19:15, 18 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

As was mentioned earlier, a city unable to host all the sports is not going to be selected via the IOC to host the Olympics. Comet Tuttle (talk) 19:39, 18 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
However, in any Olympics some events will not be staged within the actual city limits. For example, in the 2012 "London" Games the sailing events will be held in Weymouth which that article says is 195 km from London. All the sports listed (not sure about gymnastics?) might well need to be hosted outside the designated host city, but this will have been part of the original bid, so accepted by the IOC or whoever makes the decision. -Sussexonian (talk) 21:29, 18 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Likewise, the Equestrian at the 2008 Summer Olympics happened in Hong Kong, not Beijing, which was the host city. As already mentioned, this was likely worked out years in advance, probably as part of the bid. It wouldn't ever get to the point, like a few weeks before the event, that the host would say "Sorry, we don't have any basketball courts. So we're not playing that". These things are vetted years in advance, and if there are problems, they are dealt with years in advance. --Jayron32 02:14, 19 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
At least Beijing and Hong Kong are on the same continent. At the 1956 Summer Olympics the equestrian events were held almost 10,000 miles away from the main site of the games, and almost 6 months ahead (presumably so it would be summer for both sets of events). But, as mentioned, this was decided well ahead of the games actually starting. --Anonymous, 05:42 UTC, October 19, 2010.
Apart from that example, the general practice of holding some of the events quite some distance outside the official host city has gone back at least as far as 1956. That year, the rowing events were held on Lake Wendouree, near Ballarat, 110 km NW of Melbourne (the lake, which was Ballarat's main domestic water supply, has since completely dried up due to drought, but it's making a comeback). In 2000, various events were held in Canberra, 285 km SW of Sydney. -- Jack of Oz ... speak! ... 07:43, 19 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There's a Hole in my Bucket

In the famous nonsense song (above) Henry asks Liza "with what shall I fix it?". And she answers, "With a Straw, dear Henry". Would someone kindly explain how you can fix a hole in a bucket with a straw - that turns out to be too long and needs to be cut with an axe that is too dull and needs sharpened on a stone that is too dry and so needs to be wetted with water that has to be collected in a bucket - but the bucket has a hole in it? Thanks. I did say it was a nonsense song but my question about the straw still stands. 92.30.178.149 (talk) 11:43, 19 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A (piece of) straw can be the stalk of any grain or grass. In the song, they aren't talking about a drinking straw. By the way, the song has an article at "There's a Hole in My Bucket". Dismas|(talk) 11:48, 19 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I always understood it to be straw, not a straw, i.e. a bundle of stalks. --Viennese Waltz 12:16, 19 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I always thought it was (mass noun) straw, as in thatch. But our rendition of There's a Hole in My Bucket currently has "a straw". I can't see how that would be useful even if it was a very small hole. But how would you thatch a bucket anyway? The various renditions on the Internet do not seem to agree.--Shantavira|feed me 12:33, 19 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The way that I've always taken it was that Henry was to stick a stalk of some grass or grain into the hole and then cut off the part that protrudes from the bottom. After all, if he set the bucket down, the straw could be pushed up and out of the hole. Dismas|(talk) 12:37, 19 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

But with an axe??????92.30.178.149 (talk) 23:18, 19 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe a bit of overkill, but it'll get the job done. Also, the use of "a straw" is likely to make the words fit the meter of the song; lyrical choices are often made as much for fiting meter or rhyme as for making sense. --Jayron32 03:05, 20 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The article refers to its derivation from a German drinking song, which seems to be confirmed by discussion at this forum. The original words, in one version, were "Mit was soll ich'n awer zu schtoppe / Liewer Heinrich, Liewer Heinrich / Mit was soll ich'n awer zu schtoppe / Dummer Ding, mit den Schtroh!" Translated: "What should I plug it up with / Dear Henry, dear Henry? / What should I plug it up with? / Stupid thing, with some straw!" Ghmyrtle (talk) 09:20, 20 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I just played the version of the song on the double LP This is Harry Belafonte, and there the lyric is definitely "with a straw". I've always taken it to mean a piece of straw. By the way, on this version both the title and the lyric go There's a Hole in the Bucket. --Anonymous, 19:37 UTC, October 20/10.

Fred Astaire's anti-gravity walking stick

At 2:58. How did he do it?

It looks like the walking stick that he kicked away at 2:54 was simply taken away by the crew. The 2:58 stick was placed there in advance. It looks like that the stick has a string attached, but how did he swing the stick with a piece of string attached? -- Toytoy (talk) 13:31, 19 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Note that he repeats the trick shortly afterwards, when the stick has not been out of shot just beforehand, and that later he and an entire chorus line all do it again, simultaneously. I can envisage thin, invisible (to the camera) lines - think nylon monofilament fishing line - being used that would then snap and not impede subsequent manipulations (the article actually alludes to such filmic sfx use, and it had been invented some 6 years before Blue Skies was made), but the millisecond-perfect timing (assuming that's how it was done) is still mind-bogglingly impressive, and there would also have to be at least two unnoticeable cuts in the apparently continuous filming to enable the setups. Hopefully someone who really knows will respond.
Doh! The film's article specifically refers to "a concealed floor trigger mechanism" while discussing the routine's filming, and that the routine took "five weeks of back-breaking physical work" requiring multiple combined shots of Astaire - the "chorus line" really is all him, not a team of look-alikes as I'd assumed. Moral: check the relevant Wikipedia articles first! 87.81.230.195 (talk) 14:00, 19 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm trying to identify the music I recorded here and I'm hoping the people that read this could help.

Michael Douglas - Was his career "sidelined..for three years" by an accident

At Michael_Douglas#Personal life this article says:

"In 1980, Douglas was involved in a serious skiing accident which sidelined his acting career for three years. In September 1992, the same year Basic Instinct came out, he underwent treatment for alcoholism and drug addiction at Sierra Tucson Center."

I was looking for a reference for the skiing accident and can't find anything concrete. There is mention of a past skiing accident for which he eventually had a knee replacement in 1999. No "sidelined for three years". The mention of his "alcoholism and drug addiction" only appears in this section. It is all unreferenced, and has been in there at least 2 years. Anyone know if any of this is true or not and a reliable source? - 220.101 talk\Contribs 09:05, 20 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I found an (syndicated) interview from 2006: Goodridge, Mike (2006-04-13). "I'd rather be a good dad than a big star again". Evening Standard. Retrieved 20 October 2010. which has "A sideways move into producing, initially on One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest in 1975, enabled him to cast himself in meatier big-screen roles, starting with The China Syndrome in 1979, then - after an earlier three-year career break necessitated by a serious skiing accident in 1980 - in Romancing the Stone in 1984 and its 1985 sequel, Jewel of the Nile....He was treated for alcohol abuse then, allegedly, for sex addiction". A slightly different version summarises:
"1980-1983: BAD YEARS Skiing accident keeps him from acting for three years.
1992-2000: BAD YEARS Treated for alcohol abuse and alleged sex addiction (1992)."(Goodridge, Mike (2006-04-13). "My 3 years as a house-husband". Evening Standard. Retrieved 20 October 2010.)
For some odd reason, the news service I checked gave two slightly different versions of this article; the Evening Standard archive only has one. --Kateshortforbob talk 14:52, 20 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the reply and links, Kateshortforbob. I certainly 'Googled' and found information on this scarce/non-existent. I am surprised that the text has apparently never been challenged, considering the BLP issues WP has had. The first link, directly to the London Evening Standard article, does mention 3 years not working as a result of a "ski-ing accident". The 2nd link still gives very few details. The original was updated on "13.04.06", which raises the possibilty that it originated on Wikipedia. I cannot see/find the the original publishing date. I will have to investigate when the "serious skiing accident which sidelined his acting career for three years" appeared in the WP article. It may be bogus! Also, Douglas appears to have had two 3 year carreer breaks ('80-83, '03-'06). His alledged addictions appear to be on shaky ground too, in which case they must be removed from his bio. - 220.101 talk\Contribs 16:06, 20 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I was a bit concerned, but didn't have the time to follow up at work. There is a distinct possibility that the interviewer got his background information from Wikipedia, although I would like to think that Douglas' "people" would have chased him for a retraction if it was untrue. I searched Nexis for Michael Douglas + skiing + accident + career and this was the only relevant article, apart from a very brief piece in the Hindustan Times which also mentioned the skiing accident. I did a further search, and found an editorial in the Independent (Is King Kong bound for the Palace roof?, Lynn Barber, 27 September 1992) which says,

"THE CURSE of Hello! strikes again, but in an interesting new form. A few weeks ago the magazine featured Michael Douglas and his wife Diandra showing off their holiday house in Majorca. In fact they showed off the house so much it looked like an estate agent's ad, and I wondered in my cynical way if the couple were splitting and selling up. Sure enough, the Sun revealed this week that Michael Douglas is being treated in a clinic for sex addiction after his wife caught him in bed with one of her best friends. A clinic for sex addiction! Whatever next? It is called the Sierra Tucson Centre in Arizona and officially Douglas is in there for drink and drug problems but really he is being treated for sex addiction."

I have to be honest though, news gotten second-hand from the Sun wouldn't be my first choice for verifying a BLP. There is also an article from the Hobart Mercury (?) which has, "Michael Douglas, the star of the recent psycho-sexual thriller Basic Instinct, is so afflicted by his sex drive that he reportedly admitted himself to an Arizona clinic for therapy...At a Tuscon rehabilitation centre where Douglas is reported to be taking part in a 90-day program with other addicts, he stood up and said; "I am a sex addict". Douglas blamed his insatiable sexual drive on drugs, alcohol and the negative images of women he was taught as a child." (Sex, the new designer addiction, Sandra Lee, 26 October 1992). Actually, now that I've changed the search terms (oops) to Michael Douglas + alcohol + addiction, there are a ton of sources on the addiction thing. The events reported in the Sun appear to be widely accepted as fact in the press in 1992-93. He apparently went public in 1994 with an interview in Vanity Fair, but said that he was, "a recovering addict: from alcohol, not sex. Douglas, who stars opposite Demi Moore in the sexual harassment drama "Disclosure," which opens Friday in Atlanta, said his roles in "Basic Instinct" and "Fatal Attraction" generated false reports of a sex addiction. "These characters were sexually driven," Douglas says. "The media got this great handle from the film and rode with it. I can't believe people are so titillated by this." Douglas added that he entered Arizona's Sierra Tucson clinic to deal with the effects of a "cumulative lifestyle" that included excessive drinking." (Peach Buzz TALK OF OUR TOWN Test her, and she's got news for you,A Scott Walton, Atlanta Journal and Constitution, 6 December 1994). I haven't managed to track down the original Vanity Fair article, but he recently did another interview for them to publicise the new Wall Street film, where he briefly mentions it [5]. No more luck with the skiing part, except I confirmed that he does/did ski.--Kateshortforbob talk 17:46, 20 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you 'Kateshortforbob'. I have actually removed the two relevant sentences. I hope I won't be accused by anyone of 'white-washing' as I care neither way. It is just that the statements were totally unsourced and had been since they were put into the article almost 6 years ago(!), (to my chagrin by an Australian editor as I also am) as the only edits from that IP. Indeed Douglas skied and in an interview said he had a knee replaced in 1999 as a result of a past skiing accident, but that's all I found on that subject. (My 'Google Fu' may be lacking)
I think a major problem may be the ski-ing event pre-dates the Internet, so a 1980 skii-ing accident may be a bit hard to locate. I also wonder if there is some confusion between Michael Douglas and his son, who I recall had addiction problems. The treatment center mentioned apparently exists Sierra Tucson - 220.101 talk\Contribs 02:38, 21 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I would hesitate to assume that American bikers all have similar political views, and I would hesitate even further to guess that they are all anti liberal. Close inspection of the web page that the OP has linked reveals that the bar is actually located in Korea. Perhaps geography has something to do with the reason? (edit): Furthermore, I wouldn't base a solitary bar's web site statement forbidding the request of a certain artist to even begin to make a statement for any type of general culture.
