Jaguar's GA tags

Greetings, can you do me a favor and use AWB to plough through User:Jaguar's GA review list on his user page and fix the tags on the talk pages like this, they should read topic= rather than subtopic= . Comprende?♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:46, 1 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Cheers, I'm sure Jaguar is grateful too!♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:53, 1 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Help me understand: Wikipedia:Good article nominations/Instructions, tells me the parameter name is subtopic, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:01, 1 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it is when nominating, but not when actually listing a GA. It's definitely topic=, as you can see by the fact that Jaguar's tags now work and show the "genre". Confusing to people.♦ Dr. Blofeld 05:22, 2 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for that, Ser Amantio di Nicolao! Whenever a GAN is initiated it begins with "subtopic" but I'll be sure to change it to "topic" from now on, and add the pages correctly. JAGUAR  21:34, 1 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Sportspeople from Yorkshire

Stop! You seem to be adding this category to a lot of incorrect people! Stephenb (Talk) 11:33, 6 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I and another editor have removed quite a few errors, but I certainly don't have time to go through and check all the AWB changes you have made. I think you should do so though! And please be more careful next time. Thanks, Stephenb (Talk) 11:48, 6 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) There do seem to be quite a few... I thought initially you might just be picking up aviators as sportspeople, but this chap was a 17th-century admiral, and Ronald Wilberforce Allen was a politician with no even remotely sporting history. Far be it from me to offer advice, but I'd be tempted to mass-revert myself and start again from scratch. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 11:50, 6 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Struway2: and @Stephenb: - I think I know where the problem lies. Should be a fairly simple fix - I'll do it in a couple of hours when I'm back at the computer. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 11:56, 6 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

You may wish to consider Maurice Edwards, Norman Collier, and Norman Scarth. Bearing in mind that I only checked the M's and N's; I see no reason why those letters should be the only ones to still have errors needing fixing. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 22:55, 6 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited John and Vera Richter, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Gymnasium (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

My Great Aunt

Thank you for creating this page of my great aunt, Joan. She adored cats, more than people. She lived with her sister, Joyce, for her many years and I remember her very well. She would have been flattered that someone remembered her and her writings. She wrote science fiction at a time when very few, if any, women were actually publishing works in this genre. Infocom games category

Ser Amantio di Nicolao, I had just renamed the category Zork to Infocom games and was right in the middle of re-categorizing several dozen articles, and unfortunately your edit has upset my plans; please don't be offended when you see a few reverts. My plan is to keep the category Infocom containing articles related to Infocom but excluding the Infocom games, and create the subcategory Infocom games containing the actual games themselves. A Request

Hi, I was wondering if you could confirm me because I want access to the extra features on Wikipedia. I just started and I believe that I have enough edits over my first day that will show that I am not a vandal and that I am here in good faith. I already looked at the dorm for making these requests and it said most looking to get expedited from the 4 day wait are denied so I decided to come directly to an administrator. I would really appreciate it if you would confirm me and it would be an honor for you to be the one. Thank You TheEditorOfAllThingsWikipedia (talk) 20:39, 4 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I just received an alert saying that you patrolled me. Does that just mean that you are keeping an eye on my user page? I couldnt seem to find any infornmation about what that meant as far as an administrator doing it to a user. Is this just because I made the request above and you are reviewing my profile or is it something bad? Thanks TheEditorOfAllThingsWikipedia (talk) 21:38, 4 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

A note on categorization

Hello! I notice you've been adding categories to a number of articles. I believe some may benefit from more careful consideration. With regards to WP:CATDEF and WP:OVERCAT, articles should be categorized as much as possible by defining traits, rather than any trait. Specifically, but to illustrate a broader point, you've added a number of Writer categories to a scientist: William H. Behle (e.g Category:American science writers and Category:21st-century American writers). I think these are superfluous, and somewhat tangential: virtually all scientists write (i.e. publish papers and/or books), therefore categorizing them as writers, which indirectly lumps scientists with playwrights, novelists, etc. is somewhat unhelpful. While some people are commonly and reliably known as writers and science writers (e.g. Carl Zimmer), and some scientists are also known for their popular writing (e.g. Stephen Jay Gould, William Beebe) not every scientist who writes should be categorized as a writer. While some may argue that there is little or no harm in over-categorizing, I believe too many extraneous categories can distort public perception of how a subject is actually known. I think even if a subject technically falls into a category (any scientist who includes an illustration in a paper is technically an illustrator, and an author who published a single work and died in 2001, but did the majority of their work in the twentieth century, might merit inclusion in 21st-century writers), they should only be categorized as such if they are commonly and reliably described as such. A good rule of thumb, per WP:NONDEF, is (with few exceptions): if the characteristic would not be appropriate to mention in the lead portion of an article, it is probably not defining. Another way to think is, would you be likely to find the subject in a book titled with the category name? In conclusion, while I appreciate your efforts to improve Wikipedia, I urge due consideration be applied to categorization. All the best, --Animalparty! (talk) 20:40, 5 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Category:German male novelist

Hi, in a number of articles you changed the "category:Male novelist" to "German male novelist". As I understand it, this category is a subcategory of "Male novelists by nationality", that is, it refers to the nationality of the person in question, not to the language they wrote in. If this is correct, the categorisation for Robert Musil and Joseph Roth is wrong - they were both Austrian (or Austro-Hungarian), while Charles Sealsfield was an Austro-Hungarian as well as a US citizen. Albrecht Conz (talk) 01:13, 11 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Poets

Hi Ser, can I ask you what list you are using to add the category "20th-century poets" to articles? I ask because you've added it twice in two months to Ian Charleson, even though Charleson was not a poet or author and had no published poems at all (in fact the only poem he's ever been recorded to have written is a single one in his diary). Anyway, if you let me know where this is stemming from, maybe we can remove it so this won't happen again. Thanks very much! Softlavender (talk) 05:43, 11 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Classical composer, male or not

Good man, you have done huge amounts of re-categorisations with classical composers recently. Yet, I very much wonder what your logic is. Please explain. First you have changed a lot of categories from, say, "German classical composers" to "German male classical composers", and now you are changing them back, deleting the "male" again. Why? You did so yesterday with American ones. Are you suggesting that there are German and French male classical composers, but no American? Shall Americans remain genderless? I had to do a lot of cleaning up behind you when, for instance, for an Austro-German composer like Simon Molitor you changed the "Austrian" to "Austrian male", but the German not. Then, for a number of American composers on my watchlist (like William Foden, Patrick Gilmore, Swan Hennessy, Victor Herbert, or Jane O'Leary), I inserted the "male", to follow your work. But then you switched them back to non-male. WHY?

By the way, when you change categories, please make sure your new categories fit in alphabatically with the other categories. I had to do A LOT of cleaning up behind you for this, too, at least a hundred or so in the past few days. Thank you for your consideration. – Aklein62 (talk) 07:14, 18 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Problem user

Hi Ser Amantio, A user that doesn't yet know to write edit summaries has been doing massive recategorisations at all kinds of places [1]. Can you review what he has been doing, and get him/her to stop the inappropriate edits? Cheers, Kautilya3 (talk) 09:08, 18 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding "Middle Ages" in the Philippines

Hi. I just noticed that you participated in many of the name moves of early Philippine history articles. I must express concern about this. First of all because "Middle Ages" is not a term widely used with reference to Philippine history, and second because the term is associated with western history, which gives the impression that the direction of Philippine history at the time belonged to the same set of historical trends. This severely obscures many of the nuances of early Philippine history. May I invite you to discuss this at Wikipedia_talk:Tambayan_Philippines#Massive_move_of_article_names:_History_of_the_Philippines_.2F_.22Middle_Ages.22 ? thanks. - Alternativity (talk) 00:39, 19 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks :-)

Thanks for cleaning up after me! You've done a great deal of it over the years :-) --Peripatetic (talk) 08:44, 20 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Edwin Morgan – novelist?

Hi – you've added the category "20th-century novelists" to the page on Edwin Morgan. Did he write a novel (or novels)? I've only ever known him as a poet (principally), and a dramatist and translator. Scotliterary (talk) 09:14, 20 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Tennis players are not American

I'm confused by your recent additions of "American Sportswomen" to tennis players who never represented the USA. Some, like Tamarine Tanasugarn, don't even live in the USA. Some were born here and left, some simply maintain a residence for tax purposes but are not citizens and play for other countries. Those are not American sportswomen as far as I can tell. Fyunck(click) (talk) 17:58, 22 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Oh my goodness, it looks like you did hundreds of these edits to tennis players. Please remove ALL the tennis players from the AWB list and fix your recent additions. I sure hope the other project's sports players aren't as badly messed up as the tennis players are. Fyunck(click) (talk) 18:27, 22 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Well, they are. A lot of mountaineers, explorers, geologists, cartographers, adventurers, suddenly are now "sportswomen" thanks to this machine-mass-editing. And when I talk about it on the Humanities page, they say "the problem is fixed" and they order that I should not talk about it there. Akseli9 (talk) 07:32, 23 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

You are now doing the same with Category:American sportsmen and non-American ice hockey players.[2][3][4][5][6][7] Your error rate is unacceptable, so you need to slow down and personally check each and every addition. Prolog (talk) 14:44, 23 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Automated wrong mass-editing of "sportswomen" not fixed

You said the problem is fixed, you even forbid to talk about it anymore on the Humanities page where I started to point it, well, no, you did not fix yet what you've done, that is, wrongly categorizing as "sportswomen" some women who are not sportswomen. "Fixing the problem" would have been to revert all your wrong edits. I can do only the ones that are in my watchlist, but even that would be wrong too, because it's not fair that I'd have to waste my time in reverting what you did wrong. Also: I don't know about all the articles that I don't watch in my watchlist. How many more articles are similarly wrongly categorized by your "fixed problem"? Did you do the same "fixed problem" to other articles too, like sportsmen too, and to how many nationalities did you do it? All of them? Akseli9 (talk) 07:24, 23 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I reverted some of your wrong edits, and I left some others, waiting for your fixing "within a couple of hours". Now and after our talk on my [talkpage], I see that you are not going to fix them. It means to me that you can create mistakes and leave them to the other contributors to hopefully fix them. Akseli9 (talk) 10:02, 23 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Beverly Wolff

Hello... I saw that you had made an edit to the Wikipedia article on Beverly Wolff. I was one of her students, graduating in 1998 from Florida Southern College. She continued to teach me privately years beyond graduation, supporting me in starting my budding singing and directing career.

I'd like to talk with others who knew Beverly over the years. As we share the stories of our experiences with one another, we may be able to further expand the article.

I've reached out to her son. Hopefully, he and I will meet sometime, and I'll learn even more.

I'm curious to learn about the recent edits made.

Your edit on Alex Borstein page

Hi. I don't understand why but a problem occured on the page after your last edit on Alex Borstein. Can you fix that? Thanks. -- yabancım 09:58, 26 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

There was also a problem with your edit to John Patrick Shanley. I undid it to tidy up the page. No problem w/ edit content, don't even know what it was. Regards Tapered (talk) 17:42, 26 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
PS: After the undo, when I clicked on your version before my undo, the problem had disappeared--it was not replicated. Tapered (talk) 17:45, 26 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Reversion of Jill Hennessy edit!

I opened the page and found a script error so I simply reverted the edit. It had nothing to do with the content. MattSucci (talk) 05:11, 27 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

David Helpling bio

I'm going to start from the beginning. David Helpling is an award winning ambient musician of some repute. He posted a notice on Facebook that his Wikipedia page needed "some love"; e.i. an update. I had done a bit of editing, a correction here, a contribution there. So I said I would do it. Sometimes I wish I hadn't! Not only had his page not been touched since 2011 the writing was insufficient, out dated and largely poorly written.the Alert box at the top of the page states:
The page is labeled an orphan, it is not an orphan. Other pages now link to it.
The topic of this article may not meet Wikipedia's notability guideline (dated Oct 2011);
The person is regarded as an important figure or is widely cited by peers or successors. The person has created or played a major role in co-creating a significant or well-known work or collective body of work. In addition, such work must have been the subject of an independent book or feature-length film or of multiple independent periodical articles or reviews.
David Helpling is listed on YouTube, iTunes, Pandora, IMDB, Facebook, Twitter, Spotify, allmusic, My Space, he has his own production company DHM... Since the material I found on my own probably would not fit Wikipedia's guidelines I contacted Mr. Helpling and he provided some links of interviews I would not have found on my own. Now it seems anything I do to his page brings up a new alert/issue/problem. I've provided references that were not there previously, some of these trigger spam alerts; I, as a major contributor am accused of being too close to the primary source and ...appears to have a close connection with its subject, etc, etc. Mr Helpling contributed himself which was deleted by an administrator, (I think I understand why). Mr Helpling told me he will no longer contribute to Wikipedia because it "...gives me a headache". I think I understand why he feels this way.

So...what I am requesting is that the alerts at the top of this bio be removed because they are either false or outdated. Any other issue regarding Wikipedia guidelines I wish to have resolved. This guy has a well respected track record going back 1996 and deserves to have a decent bio on Wikipedia. I don't mind other parties contributing; this is what Wikipedia is about. However I'm getting weary of the issues invoved in trying to do it for him.

Hi, can you add Category:Las Vegas entertainers to those on the list which currently don't have the category?♦ Dr. Blofeld 22:01, 27 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Julius Pisarowitz

Hello,

I can add information on Julius Pisarowitz. He is my great great grandfather. I have a letter and copies of documents to substantiate my claim. I tried to write about him on Wikimedia, but it would not take it. I tried in Wikipedia and my user name was blocked.

If you are interested in his background and a son and great grandson who both followed his profession, I can help you. I would appreciate it if you would add to your written piece on Rudolf Dellingerwith credit to myself and my 3rd cousin. We've both been researching Julius for years. AWB

I've thought of something you can do. Go through the year country lists like List of American films of 1956 and add a See also *List of American films of 1956 link at the bottom of the film articles. I believe somebody started doing it already but they're nowhere near fully done. Same applies for the List of Argentine films of 1946 etc.♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:56, 31 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
