{{PD-SDASM}} Hello,

For whatever obscure whim, I returned to Flickr and found another bunch of World War I pilots. If you would care to insert these into articles, here's the list:

Max Ritter von Mueller = http://www.flickr.com/photos/sdasmarchives/8091907019/in/photostream/

Incidentally, Beckhardt's photo was misidentified as Hermann Gilly, so I removed it from the Gilly article. However, as Gilly never flew a Siemens-Schuckert D.IIInor had a personal insignia of a swastika, it is obviously a (poor) photo of Beckhardt.

I hope you will post these, as I seem to be moderately hopeless at the task.

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Frederick James Eugene Woodbridge, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Union Theological Seminary (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Hello. A tag has been placed on The Association for Legalizing American Lotteries requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about an organization or company, but it does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. You're not worth the time and effort to war with over the retard box you are so eager to patronise our readers with, so you can keep it - the article's shit anyway. The edit summary you gave with regards to "unsourced information" relates to the body of the article. Do please try and read the reverts before you leave such a cock-sure edit summary. I won't respond, just FYI. CassiantoTalk 14:38, 19 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Your recent edits to Henrietta Lacks

The source uses all caps as its title conventions: 1997 Congressional Record remarks of Representative Ehrlich. With the ICTR reference (The Johns Hopkins Institute for Clinical and Translational Research), that source also uses all caps for its article's titles. In both cases, even though Wikipedia uses very specific (and different) title conventions, it would seem to me that the original title as it stands in the Congressional Record and at the ICTR website should be preserved within the references here on Wikipedia. Shearonink (talk) 18:44, 20 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

It does look like shouting, however. Even the New York Times reduces their old-timey ALL CAPS headlines to the title case when they transcribe them into their text archive. --Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) (talk) 18:51, 20 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) I don't disagree that it does look somewhat "shouty" but I think it is a good practice to try to be very scrupulous about preserving the exact nature of references' information, even down to the punctuation or grammar usage in "cite web" titles. Is there anything within the cite templates (like some sort coding "[sic]"...) that would designate the caps as being the way the title is written in the original? In my general Wikipedia editing I am very wary of altering anything about a reference, even the ALL CAPS of a newspaper headline or the title conventions that the Congressional Record uses. I think that part of our mandate as editors is to preserve the record of events as they happened, to preserve the historicity of contemporary sources. For instance, Ehrlich's 1979 remarks (or speech/insert into Congress' records) is the earliest mention about Henrietta Lacks from a high-level governmental official that I have seen - I think it is important to preserve them within Wikipedia's pages as they appear in the official US Government records. Shearonink (talk) 19:09, 20 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Please don't refer to other editors in talk page headings. Thank you. CassiantoTalk 18:11, 26 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the noticeboard

Good evening, just wanted to pop by and say thank you for the work you did to try and protect that sandbox page the other day. Even though it is now deleted from WP (and will be more inconvenient for me to access offline,) I'm glad I didn't have to go through anything worse to get my local copy established. And you helped give me the time to do that. Much appreciation, LaughingVulcan Grok Page! 23:46, 5 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Template instructions

The documentation of a particular template applies to implementations of that template - it does not apply to instances of other templates. They are not broad guidelines, they're instructions regarding the specific template. You can't enforce the documentation of one template on articles using another. Nikkimaria (talk) 01:25, 8 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The field name is the same, alma_mater is singular, it means nourishing mother. The field was copied from the person infobox, the discussion is there, no need to have same discussion at the 35 biographical infobox templates. You are aware of the discussion, you participated in it. --Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) (talk) 01:28, 8 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Whether the field name is the same or not, documentation is specific to a template, not to a field across templates; similarly, discussion at one specific template doesn't automatically apply to other templates. {{infobox gem}} has a |weight= with documentation and previous discussion about how to use it, should we use those same instructions for |weight= at {{infobox officeholder}}? Of course not. Nikkimaria (talk) 01:33, 8 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Take it to the talk page and gain consensus please. These are all biographical templates that use the same standard fields. Alma_mater still has the same meaning no matter where used, and is still singular. Work to gain consensus to change it to Alma_maters like was done for spouse(s). --Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) (talk) 01:36, 8 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
You would need to get consensus that documentation on one template applies to different templates, because that is not current practice. See WP:TDOC. The documentation of {{infobox person}} applies only to {{infobox person}} according to our standard usage. The onus is on you to get consensus to do otherwise, and until you do you can't impose the documentation of {{infobox person}} on articles that use other templates. Nikkimaria (talk) 01:43, 8 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • The concept that a template's documentation applies to that template only is already supported by consensus, as demonstrated by the page linked above and by current practice. If you think it should be otherwise, you would need to demonstrate that consensus had changed. Nikkimaria (talk) 12:44, 8 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

On another point: if you make an edit to the article and your edit is reverted, you're also the one who need to take it to the talk page, rather than simply restoring your edit. "I think I'm right" isn't an edit-warring exemption nor is there an overriding policy like BURDEN or BLP in play here, and the status quo is assumed to have consensus until a new discussion takes place. Nikkimaria (talk) 12:49, 8 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

You are 100% wrong per MOS:INFOBOX § Consistency between infoboxes. Cheers. --Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) (talk) 14:50, 8 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
(a) No, if you actually read that section, it doesn't say anything about instructions applying across templates, but rather only that names should be the same. (b) That is irrelevant to the point about edit-warring - even if you were 100% correct about template instructions, edits that do things like add high schools just for the sake of changing a parameter name still need to be discussed where someone objects. Nikkimaria (talk)

The WikiArte (Wiki Arte y Cultura Latinoamerica) edit-a-thon is a global campaign to improve Wikipedia's coverage of Latin American arts and culture and to counter geocultural systemic bias on Wikipedia.

Featuring an opening Artists' Panel at 10am, with Sol Aramendi, Sharon Lee De La Cruz, and Marisa Morán Jahn, to be moderated by Rocío Aranda-Alvarado, curator at El Museo del Barrio.

Hoeven et al

This is the same fight that led to Clinton just saying Yale University instead of Yale Law. You WPLDONTLIKEIT and are pretending this is a helpful for readers. If they need to click the link to find out this is just an endowed component of a university, it's not helpful. When I used to link these as [[Kellogg School of Management|Northwestern University]] it was argued that this was faulty under WP:EGG. Ordinary people know Northwestern, not Kellogg. Therequiembellishere (talk) 23:38, 23 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I can't read minds, how do you know what the reader wants? We have blue links for that, when they do not know, they click. Why not add the University to the alma_mater field since that would be correct? --Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) (talk) 23:55, 23 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think this is much of a stretch to imagine. Why not just make it easier and link to Northwestern since it's still correct? Both fields for what is essentially the same info is overkill and sort of crufty, IMO. Not all college-level university divisions have specific articles, nor should there be an expectation for every en-experted casual reader to know to connect them together. Give the basic info in the infobox (university, degree) and let the article give the full info. For example, something like "Georgetown University (MA)" in the infobox and "She graduated with a Master of Arts in International Affairs with a concentration in International Organizations from the (Edmund A.) Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University." Therequiembellishere (talk) 00:02, 24 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open!

Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2016 election, please review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 22:08, 21 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Saturday December 3: Contemporary Chinese Art Edit-a-thon @ Guggenheim

On Saturday December 3, 2016, in conjunction with a global campaign, the Guggenheim will host its fifth Wikipedia edit-a-thon—or, #guggathon—to enhance Wikipedia's coverage of modern and contemporary artists from Greater China. The event will cap off Wikipedia Asian Month, an online campaign dedicated to augmenting Asian content on Wikipedia throughout November.

New and experienced editors are welcome. The event will include a training session for participants who are new to Wikipedia, and Wikipedia specialists will be on hand to provide basic instruction and editing support. Editors are invited to view the exhibition Tales of Our Time following the event.

The Guggenheim aims to raise awareness of the artists featured in the Tales of Our Time exhibition supported by The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Chinese Art Initiative, and build on the model of campaigns like the Wikipedia Edit-a-thon at the Guggenheim: Women in Architecture, Wikipedia Edit-a-thon at the Guggenheim: Contemporary Art of the Middle East and North Africa, and Art+Feminism.

  • Enter at the 88th Street entrance via the ramp at 88th Street and Fifth Avenue.

Newcomers are very welcome! Bring your friends and colleagues! --Pharos (talk) 09:46, 23 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi

In retrospect I should have checked if you were still around before the AfD; I saw your edits and assumed it had long-since been abandoned before tonight (when a no-doubt well meaning editor added some unsourced content.) --Mr. Vernon (talk) 05:08, 26 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Pizzagate

Given the nature of the completely spurious accusations concerning this topic the safest and most BLP-compliant action is to leave the redirect in place rather than explain what's going on via a disambiguation, especially considering there aren't two articles to disambiguate at this time. I note that the Times and the Post have both reported on this but I think NOTNEWS applies for the time being, especially given the outlandish claims and the tendency for this to become a target for editors promoting the conspiracy theory, as the history shows. I also note that you're moving into edit-warring territory yourself, and you can't claim a BLP exemption if you keep re-creating the disambiguation. Acroterion (talk) 01:02, 27 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • When you remove one entry, you give strength to conspiracy theorists who argue that you are covering it up. Readers should be directed to the article that says it has been debunked by reliable sources. A pizzeria is not a living person so not covered by BLP. People should not be directed to a decade old pizzagate. --Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) (talk) 01:08, 27 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
    • I have a lot of experience in dealing with conspiracy theories. I agree with you that where a conspiracy theory has endured for some time we should lay it out plainly. I'm not convinced that the same method applies for something so new and so scurrilous: instead of shining a light on it we're just abetting the defamation. I think the mention in the article is satisfactory, but I'm wary of arguing via a disambiguation, and I'm not convinced that the specific term has much significance outside of Reddit. Acroterion (talk) 01:13, 27 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
As you mentioned, it is already in WaPo and NYT, which is where I found it, and why I went looking for it here. I could not find it without a redirect. --Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) (talk) 01:16, 27 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I just went to the article on the pizza place after reading the WaPo article this morning. I don't think the presence or absence of a redirect as presently constituted is something I feel really strongly about, but I do care that the disambiguation not be misused as we've both noticed. If it becomes more than a nuisance I'll look into extended confirmed protection. Acroterion (talk) 01:19, 27 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Three reverts in 24 hours

Stop icon

Your recent editing history at George V shows that you are currently engaged in an edit war. To resolve the content dispute, please do not revert or change the edits of others when you are reverted. Instead of reverting, please use the talk page to work toward making a version that represents consensus among editors. The best practice at this stage is to discuss, not edit-war. See BRD for how this is done. If discussions reach an impasse, you can then post a request for help at a relevant noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, you may wish to request temporary page protection.

Being involved in an edit war can result in your being blocked from editing—especially if you violate the three-revert rule, which states that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Undoing another editor's work—whether in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material each time—counts as a revert. Also keep in mind that while violating the three-revert rule often leads to a block, you can still be blocked for edit warring—even if you don't violate the three-revert rule—should your behavior indicate that you intend to continue reverting repeatedly. Lawrence Cowle Phipps biography - advice requested

I am an attorney/genealogist researching Mr Phipps' genealogy for a relative. Although many biographies list his birthplace as Amityville, Berks Co., PA, I believe they are incorrect. On several of his passport applications, Mr Phipps lists his birthplace as Amity, Washington Co., PA. His father was a pastor in Washinton Co. during that time and he has an infant sibling buried there. I can privide copies of the original passport applications. How do you think I should get this change in his birthplace into his biography? Thank you for your help. Bert Williams

I actually realized right after I reverted the IP editor that I entered the wrong explanation. I reverted because there was no Reliable Source provided for the claims. --Cameron11598 (Talk) 22:19, 9 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I will see if I can find one. --Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) (talk) 01:32, 10 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
