America First is a foreign policy initiative of the administration of US President Donald Trump that emphasizes American nationalism in international relations.[1][2][3][4] It has also been linked to isolationism, although Trump denies any such connections.[5] Trump has claimed that "'America First' will be the major and overriding theme of my administration".[6]

Public reception

In a Politico/Morning Consult poll released on January 25, 2017, 65% of Americans responded positively to President Trump's "America First" inaugural message, with 39% viewing the speech as poor.[7][8]

The slogan has been criticised by some for carrying comparisons to the America First Committee, an isolationist organization that lobbied the United States against entry into World War II[9] and "counted among its ranks prominent anti-Semites of the day", most notably Charles Lindbergh.[10] The Anti-Defamation League "urged" Trump "to reconsider his use of the phrase 'America First' as a slogan describing his approach to foreign affairs, citing its anti-Semitic use in the months before Pearl Harbor by a group of prominent Americans seeking to keep the nation out of World War II", according to a press release issued by the organization.[11] American Jewish history scholar Deborah Dash Moore, professor at the University of Michigan told The Jewish Daily Forward that "From the point of view of Jews, this is a disturbing phrase" as "it's not just one that glorifies the US over all other places, but it’s one that has strong references of isolationism and a sort of turning one's back to the world", adding that members of the alt-right movement "recognize where the term comes from".[12]
