Guild of Editors
Hi,

I am an experienced editor and professional writer but new to Wikipedia. I am interested to know how I can join the Guild of Editors and also, how I can work my way to overseeing editing projects.

I look forward to hearing your replies.

Many thanks StephRJ (talk) 20:15, 1 November 2017 (UTC)

Welcome—ask questions about how to use or edit Wikipedia! (Am I in the right place?)

Getting a page for The Bedrocks.

We are currently an active musical band that have released music on Apple Music and iTunes this month. We are wondering how we can have a band profile or information on Wikipedia. — Preceding unsigned comment added by TheBedrocks (talkcontribs) 01:05, 29 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

You are confused as to the purpose of Wikipedia. It is not an PR website for you to use to advertise your group. We do not have profiles, but instead we have articles on subjects which meet Wikipedia's notability criteria. Such articles should be written by editors who do not have a conflict of interest, in order to maintain a WP:neutral point of view. Note also that your user name is not acceptable, as it appears to represent a group rather than an individual, see WP:CORPNAME. --David Biddulph (talk) 01:14, 29 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Colored-map generator for per-country data

Are there any tools that can convert a two-column table of data, with a numeric value for each country, into a colorized version of one of our SVG blank world maps and an HTML legend for the English description? Something like that would be a big help in vectorizing, for example, File:National IQ per country - estimates by Lynn and Vanhanen 2006.png. Any that can be configured for different sources of national borders (e.g. how the UN counts Taiwan as part of China)? NeonMerlin 01:28, 29 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

an australian citizen

is a baby born in australia an australian citizen? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.165.232.248 (talk) 01:35, 29 October 2017‎ (UTC)[reply]

Generally, people born in Australia are Australian citizens if at least one parent is an Australian citizen or a permanent resident at the time of the person’s birth in Australia. If neither parent is an Australian citizen, but the baby remains resident in Australia through their 10th birthday, they automatically become a citizen on that birthday. There are other considerations; see [1]. General Ization Talk 01:43, 29 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
This is, however, not the right place to ask such questions. The Help Desk is for questions about using Wikipedia. More general questions can be asked at the Reference desk. --David Biddulph (talk) 02:03, 29 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I am so sorry - 2 problems: ref number 14 is wrong. I have put the publisher in the correct place. But it is in "red". Also - the file of the portrait of Hussey should be in the info. box. I got that wrong too. Please fix both problems. Please accept my apologies. 101.182.88.116 (talk) 06:40, 29 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I've fixed both issues. The ref title was wrong, you can't use the # to link to certain page points like in Wikipedia, and the image just needed to be moved to the image field in the infobox. No big problems. Kosack (talk) 07:40, 29 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
In ref 14 there are two error messages, each of which has a wikilink to specific help. "Check |url= value (help)" links to Help:CS1 errors#bad url, & "Check date values in: |access-date= (help)" leads to Help:CS1 errors#bad date. In the former case you had a url of "http://www.tudorplace.com.ar/HUSSEY.htm#Christopher HUSSEY (Deacon & Captain)1", but URLs do not have spaces, as the help page makes clear. In the latter case you have the access date as "29 Octoner 2015"; perhaps you did access it 2 years ago, so the software doesn't object to that, but it doesn't recognise "Octoner" as a month. Why do you want someone else to correct that rather than correcting it yourself? --David Biddulph (talk) 07:45, 29 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

please note that there's a wrong date in the company page (Arabic language) start date for one of Mr Fahad AlAjlan is added as 1993 while it should be 1990 same as the date on the English version i've submitted a request to change it numerous times and nothing has been done.

Please advise.

The Arabic Wikipedia is a separate project, so you will need to ask there. If any editors of the Arabic Wikipedia read this, then they might edit it for you. Can you find a reference to support the date? Dbfirs 12:06, 29 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Aeroknox XM556

The article Aeroknox XM556 has been redirected to Minigun but is still being edited (and it's a mess). Should the page be blanked other than the redirect? Leschnei (talk) 14:32, 29 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

It seems the 'redirect' was added here back in August. However the editor that did so did not either blank the page or merge to the target page. I have removed the misplaced redir. plus some other bits of tidying, but please feel free to turn the article into a redirect and merge appropriate content as necessary. Sudden new stuff

I was trying to change my skin this morning, and in my preferences there was new gadgets that weren't there before, like one called "twinkle", which I could swear was not previously there. Please explain this and also why the user profile tab called me "autoconfirmed" in user groups! Bardic Wizard (talk) 15:25, 29 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, after a user account has been registered for a certain period of time, usually four days and has made ten edits, it becomes autoconfirmed which allows the user to perform certain actions that newly registered users are unable to do. Another result of being autoconfirmed is that several editing tools also become available to the user, including WP:TWINKLE which allows the user to perform certain tasks (vandal reverting, article tagging, etc.) in a quicker, semi-automated way when enabled. Kosack (talk) 15:46, 29 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Daily Mail as an unreliable source

I have noticed an editor removing all references in Wikipedia that are attributed to the Daily Mail, can someone point me to the ruling so it can be linked to from the article like we do at Find a Grave. It is best if everyone is aware of the policy, and that it be linked to from the article. --RAN (talk) 16:17, 29 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Would it be WP:DAILYMAIL by any chance? ‑ Iridescent 16:19, 29 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, your only edits from the account used to ask this question are to this page today and at Wikipedia:Help desk/Archives/2017 October 23#Sahid Ansari(Bhai) plus some in your userspace. If you have created an article about yourself, despite the advice previously given not to do so, or a page about another subject, please provide a link. In any event new pages are not typically indexed by Google until they have been reviewed or for 90 days whichever is the shorter period. Lord and Savior last comment...

I am writing to say that the Wikipedia on Inman the new Chicago Bears player the last sentence in your description of him is Lord and savior of the Chicago Bears. Seriously?...that's blasphemous.

Hi, the entry you mentioned on Dontrelle Inman was simply vandalism that had not been noticed yet and has now been removed. Thanks for pointing it out. Kosack (talk) 18:07, 29 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism

Good night.

My name is MrSquid and I am writing to you because it is happening something terrible in the Catalan Wikipedia.

The thing is that because of the political problems that are happening right now in Spain (about the Independence of Catalonia), a lot of catalan administrators are independentist, so they just edit as their convenience.

The Spanish Government has ceased the President of Catalonia and the rest of his Government because of the breach of the law, so he does not still the President. But it doesn't matther for the Catalan Wikipedia, they are still saying that he is the President. And for example, saying that Catalonia is an European country instead of a state in Spain and so on. So many people (included me) are trying to edit the information, but the administrators reverse my editions and then, they block the articles for "vandalism problems" (the supposed vandalism is that so many people try to write the correct information, and later others put the incorrect one again, and it is a loop).

So please, for that reason, I am writing to you. The Spanish Wikipedia can not do anything there. I suppose that the English one (which I think that there is the central of Wikipedia) yes. Please help the Catalan Wikipedia and do not let some people do what they are doing.

Thanks for reading me.

Greetings, --MrSquid (talk) 23:00, 29 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@MrSquid:, your understanding that the English Wikipedia is a "central" one is mistaken. The English Wikipedia has no control over what the other projects do. An issue on the Spanish or Catalan Wikipedias that the administrators there cannot or will not handle needs to go to the Wikimedia Foundation. I will warn you, however, not to over this issue. This is a content dispute and the Wikimedia Foundation almost never steps in to enforce a particular editor's views on content disputes. Request to update the pages for Kapu, Telaga, Balija and Naidu caste

Update 'Telaga', ;'Kapu', 'Naidu' and 'Balija' caste page with the information from provided below: http://scnc.ukzn.ac.za/doc/SHIP/CasteFinal.htm— Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.134.38.244 (talk) 1:20, October 29, 2017‎

Hello, IP user, and welcome to Wikipedia. This Help Desk "...is only for questions about using Wikipedia..." not for content suggestions. Those should be made at the talk pages of the actual articles involved, which would be Talk:Telaga, Talk:Kapu (caste), Talk:Naidu, and Talk:Balija. That said, you should probably read the content guideline on Identifying reliable sources before you make any suggestions using that web page. Administrators

If an administrator comes across an obviously bad page(vandalism, pure spam, etc.), do they have to CSD tag it, or, after looking through page history, can they zap it on the spot? Jjjjjjdddddd (talk) 02:50, 30 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

We can delete without tagging.
     — Berean Hunter (talk) 03:10, 30 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, do you have to include a reason in the summary? Jjjjjjdddddd (talk) 03:25, 30 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
We're always supposed to include a deletion reason, regardless of the context. See WP:NAS/D; we get a dropdown with common deletion reasons (most or all speedy deletion criteria applicable to the type of page, plus several other reasons), and we can always pick "Other reason" and then write an explanation. Nyttend (talk) 03:51, 30 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
PS, Jjjjjjdddddd, see MediaWiki:Deletereason-dropdown and click View Source. As I noted, it's filtered by namespace (that's the purpose of the #switch bit in the code), so you don't see P2: Portal without a substantial topic base as an option when you're deleting a talk page, for example. Nyttend (talk) 03:53, 30 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
PPS, I just dumped the whole list into the sandbox; see [2] if you're curious. Nyttend (talk) 03:55, 30 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

All refs with archive links

I've noticed several articles at WP:FAC with all references containing archive links, even those with links that aren't broken, e.g. Scarlett Johansson. My understanding is that archive links are just for links that don't work anymore but are archived on the Internet Archive. I'm curious if there's a reason for this, since it otherwise seems like an unnecessary increase of character count and makes it impossible to know at a glance whether the original link is broken. I bring up FAC since these articles would be under much more scrutiny and it apparently seems to pass muster. Tonystewart14 (talk) 04:01, 30 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Just guessing, since I don't do much with web citations (I almost always use print sources), but I suspect that it's a matter of preventing linkrot — as long as the Internet Archive doesn't die somehow, it doesn't matter whether the original link dies or stays alive, because you can just add the archive link and forget about it. Another issue is changing content: if a source says "ABC" today, and you cite it to say "ABC", and then tomorrow it changes to "DEF", someone might change your article to read "DEF" because they didn't notice that your citation preceded the change. By citing IA, we know that all changes (barring hoaxing by introducing something not in the source) will be dependent on the same version of the page unless they say otherwise. Nyttend (talk) 04:08, 30 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It is indeed to prevent link rot. The citations should all have |dead-url=no in them if the original link still works – it switches the formatting so that the title still links to the original website, and the archive link comes after. Dairy {talk} 22:26, 30 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Tonystewart14 (ping since the question is old) Dairy {talk} 22:30, 30 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for those answers Nyttend and Dairy501. I have seen the dead-url code used by bots and figured this was the case, but wanted to make sure. Tonystewart14 (talk) 22:45, 30 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Archiving Question

I finally have a working archive bot on my Talk: page, but it seems four of the oldest sections are not being archived. Any ideas why or how I can do it manually? Thank you. FULBERT (talk) 11:25, 30 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

You have archiving set to 15 days. They haven't ripened yet. Most of them will go a couple of days into November. - X201 (talk) 11:36, 30 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Have a look at User:Technical 13/Scripts/OneClickArchiver if you want to force the issue. - X201 (talk) 11:39, 30 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you X201. I specifically meant the Talkback and the Wikipedia Adventure sections; both of those are over a month old and have not been archived. Is there something that prevents them from being archived?
The one thing they have in common is no date stamp. The archive bot will search for that and not find it. So I presume it will then not bother archiving. I can do them for you if you like. - X201 (talk) 12:36, 30 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Ahh, that may be it! Can you help me with their archiving X201? Not sure if it is just copy and paste or requires something else? FULBERT (talk) 13:14, 30 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Done Copy and paste would work fine as well. - X201 (talk) 14:03, 30 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks for your help X201! FULBERT (talk) 14:45, 30 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I've removed an unnecessary closing ref tag, that's not required if you're not using inline citations, but other than that it seems ok. Was that the issue you meant? By the way, is the 30 October date you added meant to be the date you accessed the reference as it's currently listed as 2015? Kosack (talk) 12:20, 30 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Changing the font of pages

Hello. How do I change the font seen by anybody who visits a page? I have already seen it on the German Wikipedia, in which one editor has changed the font of all letters displayed on their user page, including the ones on userboxes. I am looking for a simple solution, which does not include adding <span style="font-family:;"></span> everywhere. Thanks! ~ Itsused(Talk|Contribs) 19:03, 30 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

There isn't an easy solution to it. You should only do it on your user page, and then within reason. Don't do it to article pages. - X201 (talk) 19:46, 30 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Of course I wouldn’t do it to articles. ~ Itsused(Talk|Contribs) 20:00, 30 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
<span>...</span> has limited scope but a single <div>...</div> can cover a whole page. For example <div style="font-family:Cursive;"> at the start and </div> at the end. Some elements on a given page may set their own font which will override it but only for those elements. See Font family (HTML) for more fonts supported by many browsers. Printing font changes (from Calibri to Times)

For years it seems, I've had no issues with Wikipedia font view/print settings, both are set to render as Calibri.

Today, viewed pages are still correct (Calibri), as set under Menu > General > Fonts & Colors > Default font.

But now print (preview and render) give a page with what looks to be Times Roman--except the content
of the "Content" section, which shows in some sanserif (but not Calibri) font.

(Possibly related to Firefox's new "simplify page" option (?), which changes the layout,
but keeps the same [wrong] font.)

The issue appears on all Wikipedia pages I've looked at.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Deletion of previous version of uploaded image

We uploaded a new image: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Audrey_Tang_showing_a_SwellRT_sticker_in_her_tablet_at_MediaLab-Prado._Madrid,_Nov_2016.jpg However, the first version of the image (21:15, 30 October 2017) included accidentally part of the face of a person that did not express consent (and is not a public figure). That was corrected in the second version of the image (created 4 minutes later: 21:19, 30 October 2017). I would like to request the speedy deletion of the first version.

My Wikimedia contributions - link has disappeared

I've been stumped with this one for six months: At the top of the page (next to Sandbox, Preferences and Watchlist), my 'Contributions' link used to allow me two options. Now I only have one. I used to have a drop down to both my Wikipedia contributions (Alt-Shift-Y) and my Uploads to Wikimedia Commons. The latter was a really useful quick link, but has completely disappeared. I've seen other users' computers where this link is still visible, so it must be some 'Preference' change I have made, or possibly impacted by some script I've added. But for the life of me I cannot trace the cause. Any help in restoring it would be much appreciated. Regards from the UK, Nick Moyes (talk) 11:46, 31 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I haven't seen that feature and don't know whether it went to [3], [4], [5] or something else. Here is JavaScript to add a "Commons" link next to "Contributions" (not a drop-down) with the second url (you can easily change that):
mw.util.addPortletLink(
'p-personal',
'//commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:ListFiles/Nick_Moyes&ilshowall=1',
'Commons',
'pt-commons',
'Commons uploads',
null,
'#pt-logout'
);

Add it to User:Nick Moyes/common.js next to the existing mw.util.addPortletLink. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:44, 31 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you - that script works perfectly. But I'd still like to understand what change I've managed to make to my own settings which caused me to lose it. Interesting that you say you haven't seen that feature yourself. I had thought I had had that function ever since I had started here, and the other users PC I looked at also had two options for Contributions. Anyway, that shortcut does exactly what I was after - so thanks very much. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nick Moyes (talkcontribs) 23:16, 31 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Nick, as PrimeHunter says above, I too have never noticed such a commons contribution link. I also noticed that at User:Nick Moyes/common.js, you've pasted my complete Page Curation script word-to-word from User:Lourdes/PageCuration.js. While that would work, what is neater is that you undo this addition that you did to your common.js page, and instead simply copy the following into your common.js page.
importScript('User:Lourdes/PageCuration.js'); // Linkback: User:Lourdes/PageCuration.js
This is properly described at User:Lourdes/PageCuration. Hope this helps in making your page neater. Thanks. Lourdes 03:34, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks - that's now been done, and looks a lot tidier. Regards Nick Moyes (talk) 17:37, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Official Editor

Hello!

My name is Amada Robles and as part of the Communications Team at McLean Bible Church, I work to maintain our online presence. I have been attempting to make changes to several aspects of our Wikipedia pages to reflect recent updates in our church history, however I seem to have been prohibited from making certain changes because I lack the official status to do so. Is there any way we can establish an official editor of this page designed so that our Communications Team and only us may make changes? I can verify my employment at McLean Bible Church if needed. I look forward to hearing from you.

Joyfully,

Amada Robles Communications Associate McLean Bible Church— Preceding unsigned comment added by Mcleanbible (talkcontribs) 14:18, 31 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Amada. The first think you should do is register a different username. Usernames which imply shared use or a primarily promotional purpose are prohibited according to our username policy.
Second, you should very carefully review our policies on conflicts of interest. Wikipedia is the encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and there is no such thing as an "official editor" of any page, nor anyone entitled in any special way to control the contents of any certain article. In fact, editors who are acting as the official representative of a subject, are strongly discouraged from editing an article on that subject at all. You are however encouraged to suggest changes on the article's talk page, which you can do by adding a comment along with this text: requested edit. Your request will then be added to a queue to be reviewed by volunteers who can make the proposed changes once they've been vetted and determined to comply with out core policies and guidelines. GMGtalk 14:26, 31 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
As you say "I can verify my employment at McLean Bible Church", there is a more important problem - Under Wikipedia's terms of use you must make a Paid-contribution disclosure before making any further edits to our articles. - Thank you Arjayay (talk) 17:42, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

What next?

I have written an article, I submitted it over a month ago. What happens next? I have tried to search it and it doesn't appear in the dictionary.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 185.69.144.105 (talkcontribs) 31 October 2017 17:11 (UTC)

Hello, the only edits, this year, from the address used to post here were to Neil Fitzmaurice in June. Can you give more information? Thank you. Eagleash (talk) 17:23, 31 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) :Hello IP 185.69.144.105. Firstly, please sign all posts on talk pages with 4 tildes ( ~~~~ ) which will add your signature and a timestamp,
As for the article you wrote, it would help if you told us what the title was. The IP you are currently using has only edited 2 articles Neil Fitzmaurice, which was started in July 2005, and Adam Green (footballer) which was started in October 2004‎.
You must have been using another IP address, or an account, when you created your article, but without knowing the title of the article, there is little we can do. - Arjayay (talk) 17:26, 31 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Also, what is this dictionary to which you refer?--S Philbrick(Talk) 17:36, 31 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

3 problems - I have added a new ref at the bottom of the page - with quotes. It has not worked. There is no URL - I hope that this is OK. Also, ref number 11 is all wrong. Please fix. Finally, I up loaded a commons file - but I have failed. The new file is in the "Downfall' section of this page. Thanks for fixing up all 3 problems if able 123.2.36.6 (talk) 02:06, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed The changes had already been reverted by another editor unaware of the 'history' here. I have however edited the page as I think was initially wanted. The image seems to have been copied from Boston, Lincolnshire together with some text. Please see WP:CWW for how to do this correctly. The ref error was as ever, incorrect information in the publisher parameter (plus pipes with just plain text in between them). Eagleash (talk) 03:21, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The space around the tower file just added is very "vacant". Can this be fixed? Thanks folks as always 123.2.36.6 (talk) 03:55, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I meant to go back and adjust it again, but David did it for me, as RL intervened. Please read WP:CWW and make the necessary attributions. Thank you. Eagleash (talk) 04:10, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 6.8 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. If you cannot find what you are looking for, we have a reference desk, divided into various subject areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. Best of luck. Unclear photo

Have we got a template for tagging unclear photographs? eg when two people are in the photo, but there's no explanation of which one is the subject of the article. If not, any suggestions for tackling the above situation? - X201 (talk) 14:33, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

If it is in an article, I would remove the image from the article, move it to the talk page, and ask for help identifying the correct person. --Jayron32 15:24, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, folks – I work with the Sylvia Beach Hotel on matters relating to their web presence and social media; we discovered that the Google Ad display was using an older name for the site, The New Cliff House, which was confusing many web visitors (that's how we found out about it in the first place); a screen shot is attached for reference. The information was not the same as the Google Business profile we set up, we checked. We traced it to an entry for Sylvia Beach Hotel on Wikipedia, which had been set up as a re-direct to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Cliff_House. I removed the re-direct, since the hotel does business as the Sylvia Beach Hotel and has since 1984, and added some basic information about the site, including a reference to the New Cliff House page, and the site's inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places in Lincoln County, but when I returned to check on the page, some revisions had been made and the redirect had been once more put in place. I am not sure what to do to fix this problem; thank you in advance for your help.

If you wish to suggest changes to the article New Cliff House, including the possibility of renaming it, the place for such suggestions is at Talk:New Cliff House. You need to read about conflict of interest, and if you are working for the establishment you need to make the declaration required for paid editing. --David Biddulph (talk) 16:34, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Guild of Editors

Hi,

I am an experienced editor and professional writer but new to Wikipedia. I am interested to know how I can join the Guild of Editors and also, how I can work my way to overseeing editing projects.

I look forward to hearing your replies.
