Personal life

Dileep married actress Manju Warrier on 20 October 1998.[17] The couple has one daughter, Meenakshi (born in 2000). In July 2014, Dileep filed for divorce which was granted on 31 January 2015.[18] Dileep married actress Kavya Madhavan on 25 November 2016 at Vedanta Hotel, Kochi.[17][19]

Actress Molestation Case

On 10 July 2017, Dileep was arrested by the Kerala Police and subsequently remanded for conspiracy of kidnapping and rape attempt on an Indian film actress.[6] Dileep was later denied bail by a magistrate court and the Kerala High Court.[7] On 4 October 2017, Dileep was released on bail by the High Court with certain conditions.[8]

Background

Dileep and Nadirshah were initially questioned by the Kerala Police for 13 hours and subsequently for ten hours in connection with an abduction and sexual assault of a popular Indian actress on 17 February 2017. She was kidnapped and then molested while traveling for work.[20] According to the FIR, a seven-member gang, with prime suspect (a.k.a Pulsar Suni), molested the actress for almost two-and-half hours inside the moving vehicle.[21][22][23]

The actress finally took refuge at actor Lal's house and informed the police. The gang escaped in the van but was later arrested by the police.[24] The police registered an FIR with sections of rape, criminal intimidation, criminal conspiracy and relevant sections of the IT Act. The police said the victim's medical examination has confirmed rape.[25][26] The actress said that she is contemplating suing Dileep after he alleged that the actress was 'good friends with the accused Pulsar Suni'. The Kerala women's commission later registered a case against Dileep and three others regarding the derogatory comments against the actress.[27][28]

Case investigation

Dileep and his close friends were accused of masterminding the attack. The investigation suggests that the prime accused Sunil Kumar had contacted Dileep’s manager Appunni, whose anticipatory bail plea was rejected by the high court,[29] through various mobile numbers several times between November 2016 and February 2017. The police received information that Pulsar Suni visited Dileep at five different specified places, including the shooting locations of Dileep where the conspiracy was hatched.

The police searched an online dress showroom called "Laksyah" owned by Dileep's present wife Kavya Madhavan in search of a memory card in connection with the case investigation.[30] The CCTV visuals from a nearby shop shows that after committing the crime, the arrested driver had visited the boutique ‘Laksyah’.[31] On 25 July 2017, Kavya Madhavan was questioned by a special investigation team from kerala police for six hours probing the case.[32] The police also questioned singer Rimi Tomy and actor Siddique, both close friends of Dileep and his wife Kavya Madhavan, as part of the ongoing investigation.[33]

Aftermath

Following his arrest, Dileep's membership was revoked by film organisations, such as the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), Film Exhibitors United Organisation of Kerala (FEUOK), Kerala Film Producers Association (KFPA), and Film Employees Federation of Kerala (FEFKA).[34] Several political parties protested against Dileep; his effigy was burned and business firms were vandalised, including Dhe Puttu restaurant, and marched to his multiplex theatre D Cinemaas.[35] It was reported that Dileep's arrest had caused a 50–60 crore loss in Malayalam film industry. His then ongoing projects Kammara Sambhavam and Professor Dinkan was indefinitely delayed and Ramaleela, which was supposed to be released on 21 July 2017 was postponed in view of the arrest.[36]
