    Translated pages ?

My father Herbert Kline has a German Wiki Page. I had it translated and now I am not sure if I submit the translation to Wiki or have to make another English page. Any advice welcome. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Elissakline57! (talkcontribs) 16:46, 24 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Elissakline57. General advice is at Translation. My advice it to treat it the translation as a new article in en-wiki, using articles for creation to create a draft, and getting it reviewed. (Remember to credit the source when you create the draft). This is not obligatory - you could create it directly as an article in en-wiki - but unless you are confident that the translated text and the referencing meet en-wiki's standards, I would suggest not. (Different language wikipedias have different rules about some things, so it's possible for things to be acceptable in one but a direct translation not acceptable in another. My impression is that de-wiki is at least as strict as en-wiki, but I don't know for sure). --ColinFine (talk) 17:23, 24 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Alysongeller (talk) 17:07, 24 March 2019 (UTC)How do I officially publish entry after I've tested it in Sandbox?

    Hi,

How do I officially publish entry after I've tested it in Sandbox?

    Thanks for your guidance.

    Aly--Alysongeller (talk) 17:07, 24 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

On the top right of your screen you'll find the buttons:Read Edit New section & View history. Next to them there is a button called More, wich shows the option Move. try that. Oxygene7-13 (talk) 17:15, 24 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Alysongeller, and welcome to the Teahouse. While Oxygene7-13's answer is technically correct, I would advise against simply moving it to main space, and rather advise you to submit it for review by pasting {{subst:submit}} at the top.
I have two reasons for this. One is that in my opinion the article is far too detailed, and needs ruthless editing. The other is that it appears to be an autobiography. These are strongly discouraged in Wikipedia, and should always be submitted for review. Certainly, the text as it stands is far from neutral. Please also review WP:COI before you go any further. --ColinFine (talk) 17:29, 24 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed, half the article would do the trick... Terminology as: groundbreaking, most influential, powerful and so on are also not done on Wikipedia. Oxygene7-13 (talk) 17:39, 24 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Who will make a decision regarding deleted content

I uploaded some figures, which were then deleted-

    https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Deletion_requests/Files_uploaded_by_User:AWCzarnik

The artwork I posted is Public Domain and would benefit the article. I'm looking for advice as to who could make the decision whether or not to sustain the delete, and if not who has the authority to put the artwork back on the article. AWCzarnik (talk) 22:33, 24 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Since that discussion is on Commons, you need to deal with it there. Though closely related to Wikipedia, it is a separate project with its own policies/procedures/etc. 331dot (talk) 22:37, 24 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

    Non constructive comment

What do you mean by "non constructive comment"? It was copied from Wikipedia!!!!!! is there any censure in this site when comments are true but not in favor of the concerned person??? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Moryyan (talkcontribs) 22:46, 24 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Moryyan: This is the English Wikipedia; therefore, all content added to articles must be in English (not, for example, French). Thank you. --MrClog (talk) 23:02, 24 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Located an email address and phone number in an article talk page

I was on an article and went to the talk page and found the only post on it is someone trying to sell something related to the topic, featuring their email address and phone number, history says it was posted in 2008.
    I'm pretty sure we:

    • A. Aren't supposed have 'sales ads' in talk pages.
    • B. Phone numbers and emails on talk pages.

    How should this be handled?
(The entry has zero to do with the topic in a editing context, and was from an IP address that has made no further edits. I haven't posted a link here to avoid drawing attention to it. (Also, if there's a page that has the policy for how to handle this, what is it, so I can bookmark it for the future.)--The Navigators (talk)-May British Rail Rest in Peace. 23:53, 24 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

    Extra dot on file

The map at the top of Christian state, reproduced here, marks countries with official religions, with Christianity being a dark blue or purple. For some reason, there's a random dot in continental Nunavut (although it's absent from File:Map of state religions.svg, so it's not a map error), and I can't figure out how to get rid of it. Sometimes misplaced bullets can appear on top of images, but that's not the case; I've previewed the page with all content removed except the file (code [[File:Map of state religions.svg|border|right|thumb|300px]]), and it's still there. Can anyone suggest a fix? I've added it to this Help Desk request, and in pre-posting preview mode it's present. Nyttend (talk) 23:56, 24 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I see the Nunavut (in Northern Canada) dot in https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/f/fd/Map_of_state_religions.svg/300px-Map_of_state_religions.svg.png but not https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/f/fd/Map_of_state_religions.svg/450px-Map_of_state_religions.svg.png. Both images are actually in the html as a srcset to give the browser a choice between png versions at different sizes. Here I see the 450px image with no dot at default zoom but the 300px image if I zoom out. SVG images have code to describe geometric shapes. I don't know whether there is a code problem in the original SVG file Media:Map of state religions.svg or only the MediaWiki conversion to different png sizes. File:Map of state religions.svg does actually not display the original but a large png version. I don't see the dot in the original svg but that does not guarantee that the problem does not originate there. I also see the dot in some of the thumbnails for old versions at File:Map of state religions.svg#filehistory. I don't know much about the SVG format and don't have software to analyze it. |340px makes a srcset with https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/f/fd/Map_of_state_religions.svg/340px-Map_of_state_religions.svg.png and https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/f/fd/Map_of_state_religions.svg/510px-Map_of_state_religions.svg.png. I don't see the dot in either so that could be a crude solution for all viewers of this article but the image is used in many articles. It may require help at Wikipedia:Graphics Lab/Map workshop or commons:Commons:Graphic Lab/Map workshop. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:40, 25 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

    Châtelet–Les Halles

    Hi,

In the box of Châtelet–Les Halles, it is written that the A line ends at Marne-la-Vallée - Chessy. Can someone change that to Marne-la-Vallée–Chessy as I do not know how to do that? Thanks.

5 chemistry pages with major errors

I can see 5 pages of chemistry info that has a serious, and consistent error. I would like to suggest a rewrite of these pages. How do I go about doing this?

Be bold and go for it! You can edit the pages for yourself by clicking "edit" on top of the pages. --MrClog (talk) 14:22, 25 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
As MrClog says, just do it! In the worst case, soemone will disagree with you and revert your edit: No hard feelings of that happen, it's ust a normal way we work. See WP:BRD. However, if you prefer, you can start by making a suggested edit on the article's talk page, and then edit the article after a discussion ensues or if nobody responds to your suggestion. In any case, make sure to cite your changed material to a reliable source: WP:RS. -Arch dude (talk) 15:10, 25 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

How long will it take for an entry I submitted to be added to Wikipedia?

    Friends,

I wrote and submitted an article about the New York Women's Culinary Alliance on Friday. It has yet to be added to the public face of Wikipedia. I've written and submitted articles to Wikipedia in the past and they've always been publicly posted more quickly than this time. Any idea how much longer I'll have to wait to see the article posted publicly?

    Thanks, Illbadler (talk) 14:08, 25 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Illbadler, I advise you to add {{subst:submit}} at the top of your current draft. An experienced editor will then look to your page and either publish it or give further tips and advice. Thank you for editing Wikipedia. --MrClog (talk) 14:18, 25 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, MrClog, for your quick reply. Very helpful.Illbadler (talk) 15:58, 25 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Illbadler: You created a subpage draft at User:Illbadler/sandbox/New York Women's Culinary Alliance. These drafts are not articles and will not become articles unless they are either moved to mainspace or submitted to WP:AFC. If you are reasonably certain that this subject is notable organization, you can use the "move" tag to rename it to New York Women's Culinary Alliance (see Help:Moving for details). If you wish to have the page reviewed first, you can add the template {{subst:submit}} to the page and it will be added to the queue of drafts to be reviewed by an experienced editor. Can't un-transclude unneeded content

Nauvoo Temple currently includes the building's coordinates at the beginning of the running text. Its first few lines are:

    40°33′02″N 91°23′04″W / 40.55056°N 91.38444°W / 40.55056; -91.38444
The Nauvoo Temple was the second temple constructed by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

How does one fix this? The coordinates are unquestionably coming from the infobox, {{LDS Temple/Nauvoo Temple}} (they appear in the same place if I transclude the template onto a page with no other code), but I don't see anything forcing the coords to appear anywhere than in the infobox or the top right. It's not a problem with the parent {{LDS Temple}}, as other temples, e.g. Nauvoo Illinois Temple, don't have the coords except where you'd expect to find them. Nyttend (talk) 00:54, 26 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Nyttend: I'm not sure, but it may be from template using {{Coord}} with display=title, inline, which causes the coordinates to display both at the rightside top of the page and also inside the text. The other template you mention uses display=title for {{Coord}}, so it will only appear in the upper right of the page. RudolfRed (talk) 01:07, 26 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

the information of this article on wikipedia in spanish does not match the one on the english version

    https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antigua_Galer%C3%ADa_Nacional_de_Berl%C3%ADn

the article of wikipedia in spanish says the architect of the building was Schinkel, while the english version and other sources say it was Stüler.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alte_Nationalgalerie --Fdepy (talk) 01:02, 26 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I see that you've done the sensible thing and raised the point on the talk page of the Spanish article. The gallery couldn't have been "designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel in 1865", as he had died in 1841. The gallery is not listed at es:Anexo:Obras de Friedrich Schinkel. I have taken the liberty of inserting a space in your question here to cure the broken link to the enwiki page. It is worth noting for the future that rather than using a URL it is better to use a wikilink, so es:Antigua Galería Nacional de Berlín and Alte Nationalgalerie. --David Biddulph (talk) 06:59, 26 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Is it ever acceptable to italicize an entire quoted sentence (or part of a sentence) for emphasis?

I've seen that done before, with no indication that it was italicized in the original or added. Should it be removed if found?

Example, from the page on Batman villain Simon Hurt:

"Going over his notes on Batman's psychology, he realized that Batman was "powered by tragedy" and set about traumatizing the three replacements, ostensibly to make them better crimefighters."

Is that usage correct, or should it be removed?75.110.35.108 (talk) 01:30, 26 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Unless it was italicized in the original, it shouldn't be done here. Adding one's own emphasis verges on WP:OR in my opinion. Per MOS:ITALQUOTE, in general, "don't use italics for quotations." Clarityfiend (talk) 06:35, 26 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Where to propose new functionality for citing a book with a collection of works multiple times

Hi, I'm working on The Party of Moderate Progress Within the Bounds of the Law, and there are several works contained collected in a book that get cited separately throughout the article. I'm not particularly happy with WP:REFNAME or WP:IBID, and {{rp}} isn't satisfactory here, because the chapters are actually separate works - I've encountered this problem before when citing scholarly collections that all come from a single collection, but the works are separate pieces so they can't just be rolled up in a single citation. Since I'm not really happy with the citation options on hand, and I wanted to know where I go to open a ticket or discussion to improve output for multiple references. Ideally what I'd want to see here is in the {{reflist}} (or a new, equivalent template), there would be a way to cite the main work once with all the information all the chapters share (collection title, editors, translators, year of publication, etc), and then for each subsequent reference you would call something like the "ref name" plus whatever information had changed for that subreference. Then, the {{reflist}} would then show the main reference as the first entry, and then the sub entries in an indented list below the main entry. -Furicorn (talk) 02:16, 26 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Furicorn Standard practice here is to have a separate section often headed "Sources", below the list of numbered footnotes headed "References". "Sources" contains the unvarying details of the overarching work, and each footnote citing a part of the overarching work can then refer to it just by a name and year: see WP:CITESHORT. True, the reader wanting full reference details has to look in two places, but links can be created within the footnote: see Help:Shortened footnotes, and Template:sfn and its variants.
If you continue to find that what you want to see is unavailable within the present facilities, you could perhaps start a discussion at Wikipedia talk:Citing sources: Bhunacat10 (talk), 09:51, 26 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

This is the precise situation for which {{harvc}} was written.

@AugusteBlanqui: What you have done is proposing the deletion. The difference between that (PROD) and nominating an article for deletion (AfD) is that PROD doesn't require discussion, it simply requires no-one to object to the proposed deletion in 7 days. @MrClog: Thank you for the quick reply! I definitely made a mistake then (my first ever proposed deletion). I certainly would prefer that it is AfD! I will try to make the change. AugusteBlanqui (talk) 09:08, 27 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I have completed the last missing step.[2] Wikipedia:Twinkle makes it possible to nominate a page for deletion with a few clicks. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:18, 27 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Style question: acronym expansion within a quotation

What is our style guideline on acronym expansion when an acronym is used for the first time in an article, but it's within a quotation?

I'm editing this article section, which contains a quote that includes the acronym "CRM", meaning in this case Crew Resource Management. This is the only time "CRM" is mentioned in the article. Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Abbreviations is silent on whether and how to expand an in-quote acronym, but says we should "always" use the abbreviation style or acronym style that was used in the quote. I think we need to include the whole version right there in the quote for understandability, the same way we include both the acronym and its expansion the first time an acronym is used in normal (non-quotation) article text; but it can't be right to put those words in the speaker's mouth.

I would think we should write the whole version in brackets after the acronym, the same way we would add to a quotation a word that was not in the original quote but which needs to be added to make the sentence clear or grammatically correct. I also think the link should be on the whole-version text, rather than on the acronym itself. So it would look like:

...resulting in a loss of control and their failure to abide by CRM [Crew Resource Management] principles of mutual support...

Is this correct, and is this listed in the Manual of Style anywhere? If not I'm happy to add it. On Sober Reflection (talk) 10:26, 27 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I think what you're saying makes a lot of sense and I would go for it if the MoS doesn't take a position on this issue, so long as you preserve the original usage in the quote by using brackets as you explained. If you want to modify the relevant MoS section or find more opinions on the matter just start a discussion on Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Abbreviations.

Thank you! Much appreciated, especially the encouragement. On Sober Reflection (talk) 10:55, 27 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I added a proposal to the main MoS talk page, here. Thanks! On Sober Reflection (talk) 12:22, 27 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

You can't delete the account (see WP:Username policy#Deleting and merging accounts), but as your question here is your only contribution you can simply ignore it. --David Biddulph (talk) 12:37, 27 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
