Ways to improve Sachem High School North

Hi, I'm Boleyn. Malmmf, thanks for creating Sachem High School North!

I've just tagged the page, using our page curation tools, as having some issues to fix. That has been tagged as needing references.

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, you can leave a comment on my talk page. Or, for more editing help, talk to the volunteers at the Teahouse.

Adding references can be easy

Just follow the steps 1, 2 and 3 as shown and fill in the details

Hello! Here's how to add references from reliable sources for the content you add to Wikipedia. This helps maintain the Wikipedia policy of verifiability.

Adding well formatted references is actually quite easy:

  1. While editing any article or a wikipage, on the top of the edit window you will see a toolbar which says "Cite". Click on it.
  2. Then click on "Templates".
  3. Choose the most appropriate template and fill in as many details as you can. This will add a well formatted reference that is helpful in case the web URL (or "website link") becomes inactive in the future.
  4. Click on Preview when you're done filling out the 'Cite (web/news/book/journal)' to make sure that the reference is correct.
  5. Click on Insert to insert the reference into your editing window content.
  6. Click on Show preview to Preview all your editing changes.
  • Before clicking on Save page, check that a References header   ==References==   is near the end of the article.
  • And check that   {{Reflist}}    is directly underneath that header.
7.  Click on Save page. ...and you've just added a complete reference to a Wikipedia article.

You can read more about this on Help:Edit toolbar or see this video File:RefTools.ogv.
Hope this helps, --John from Idegon (talk) 03:19, 6 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Famousbirthdays.com as a source

Hi Malmmf. I noticed that you recently used famousbirthdays.com as a source for information in a biography article. Please note that there is general consensus that famousbirthdays.com does not meet the reliable sourcing criteria for the inclusion of personal information in such articles. (See Wikipedia:Reliable_sources/Noticeboard/Archive_153#Is_famousbirthdays.com_a_reliable_source_for_personal_information). If you disagree, let's discuss it. DYK for Tyler Kinley

On 29 April 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Tyler Kinley, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that American baseball player Tyler Kinley's ancestors changed their surname from "McKinley" after the assassination of the 25th President of the United States? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Tyler Kinley. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Tyler Kinley), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

School articles

You appear to be updating the enrollment numbers of many schools, and then changing the date. However, the access date to the source cited has not been changed. Could you clarify? Thanks. Magnolia677 (talk) 23:42, 25 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I just sometimes forget at times to change the access date. The school enrollment numbers & years are correct, it just sometimes slips my mind to change the access date. Will work on that. Malmmf (talk) 11:10, 26 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, thanks for doing all of those tedious NCES updates. I was going to point out the issue of the access dates, but I see you ve already been reminded. Meters (talk) 02:09, 31 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Also want to add, US schools are supposed to be using the |us_nces_school_id= parameter rather than NCES being manually referenced. If you could add this parameter to articles with the following templates that would be really helpful. The template has a dedicated ref name built in, so you can simply add <ref name="NCES" /> for the other things that need to be referenced from NCES. Don't forget to remove the manual ones that are present. Thank you Steven (Editor) (talk) 17:56, 3 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • Public schools: {{NCES School ID|ID|school_name=Name|access_date=Date|ref_name=NCES}}
  • Private schools: {{NCES Private School ID|ID|school_name=Name|access_date=Date|ref_name=NCES}}

A tag has been placed on Drey Jameson requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a real person or group of people that does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 23:33, 16 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't delete anything you added; I just moved everything to the correct section. School, height, weight don't go in the infobox and stats/rankings don't get their own sections. Your draft article, Draft:Damarea Crockett

Hello, Malmmf. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or Draft page you started, "Damarea Crockett".

In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been nominated for deletion. If you plan on working on it further, or editing it to address the issues raised if it was declined, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}}, {{db-draft}}, or {{db-g13}} code.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Thanks for your submission to Wikipedia, and happy editing. CASSIOPEIA(talk) 07:32, 16 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Updating NCES stats

Hello Malmmf, thank you for your efforts to update the school articles with updated NCES stats. I noticed that you neglected in some cases to update the accessdate for the NCES ref to show that the information was updated based on a refreshed review of the source. Also, there are two other data points that are also included in many of the infoboxes that are based on the same NCES source: the 'ratio' parameter and the 'teaching_staff' (or 'faculty') parameter. While you are there updating 'enrollment' or 'students' parameter, it would be really helpful if you would also update those other two parameters. Thanks for your help. – Archer1234 (talk) 18:52, 6 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I too want to add my thanks. That's a lot of work and i appreciate you doing it. It would be nice if you'd update the other parameters too, but if you'd be willing to drop me a note periodically with articles you've updated, I'd be more than willing to go back through them and update or add a demographics section and clean up any other odds and ends. As my 7 year old says, "Teamwork,yay!" Thanks. John from Idegon (talk) 20:37, 6 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

New school articles

Hi Malmmf, I can see you created two new high school articles; El Campo High School and Medina High School (New York). They are ok but just want to give you a heads up that per the school article guidelines, stubs are to be avoided. It also looks like you may have copied the infobox from another article which is also against the guidelines, instead a fresh copy should be used from the template page. The nickname parameter should be used instead of team_name and NCES should be used for demographics. Thanks Steven (Editor) (talk) 03:19, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Concert tours

Please note that articles for concert tours need to be more than just an announcement of the tour, the dates, and maybe a set list (which if it is taken from Setlist.fm is an unreliable source, and shouldn't be used anyway). Articles that only have this information fail WP:NCONCERT and are liable to be redirected to an accompanying album or deleted outright. To stay on Wikipedia, they need far more information than just a list of dates, which falls foul of WP:NOTDIR, because Wikipedia should not just be a listing of events – they need in-depth coverage like a description of the show or reviews, and these have to come from reliable sources, not the artist's social media or blog sites. Thank you. Richard3120 (talk) 20:59, 8 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Updating NCES stats

Information icon Hello, I'm Steven (Editor). I noticed that you made one or more edits to an article, concerning the updates of review statistics, box office numbers, sports statistics, or some other frequently updated data with a fixed web address, but you did not update the |access-date= parameter in the citation template. The |access-date= parameter is the full date when the content pointed to by the URL was last verified to be working and supporting the text being cited in the article. This means that the parameter needs to be updated whenever the content is updated. If you need guidance on referencing, please see the referencing for beginners tutorial, or if you think I made a mistake, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. Steven (Editor) (talk) 00:06, 16 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Multiple editors had already mentioned about this above including me but it seems you are not following the advice? Welcome to Wikipedia! I edit here too, under the username Onel5969 and it's nice to meet you :-)

I wanted to let you know that I’ve proposed an article that you started, Ryan Costello (baseball), for deletion because it meets one of the relevant criterion. The particular issue can be located in the notice, that is now visible at the top of the article.

If you wish to prevent the deletion:

  1. Edit the page
  2. Remove the text that looks like this: {{proposed deletion/dated...}}
  3. Click the Publish changes button.

But, please remember to explain why you think the article should be kept on the article's talk page and improve the page to address the raised issues. Otherwise, it may be deleted later by other means.

If you have any questions, please leave a comment here and prepend it with {{Re|Onel5969}}. And, don't forget to sign your reply with ~~~~ . Thanks!

NCES updates thanks

The updating of NCES stats is much better and there is no need to rush when updating these, please take your time so you can ensure everything is done correctly (mentioned in the ANI post). I did say I was going to post here about the dedicated parameter and templates — all U.S. schools should be using the us_nces_school_id parameter with either {{NCES School ID}} (for public schools) or {{NCES Private School ID}} (for private schools). If you can add these that would be good but if not that's ok as these are being added on a gradual basis anyway. I also want to say to make sure you use your talk page discussions and reply so we don't have to end up going to ANI — thanks for acting on the advice provided Steven (Editor) (talk) 22:58, 24 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. When you expand critical reception sections, please make sure you're not repeating references that already exist on the page. You're frequently forgetting to do this or it seems, to even check if they are already elsewhere. For example, on Fine Line (album), some of the references you only added as bare URLs in the prose already existed in the album ratings table right above. Also, as Steven (Editor) has brought up with you, can you please make an effort to provide more than a bare URL? For an editor that's been here three years and with over 70,000 edits, I would think by this point you know bare URLs are not helpful, and it leaves it up to other editors to tag and fill out for you. Thank you. Ss112 06:15, 17 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Please use citation templates rather than bare URLs

Please consider using citation templates rather than bare URLs as they are much more informative. For Anton Chekhov, please note the {{Cite web}} template that I used in place of the bare URL that you placed. 2402:1980:82E0:C616:E375:8F2A:D0AD:A0E4 (talk) 04:53, 16 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
