The sixteenth legislative assembly election is to be held on 6 April 2021 to elect members from 234 constituencies of the Legislative Assembly in the state of Tamil Nadu in India.[1][2] The term of the previous Fifteenth Legislative Assembly of Tamil Nadu will end on 24 May 2021.
Background
Tamil Nadu's politics have been dominated by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) for the last 50 years. In 2011, the AIADMK under J. Jayalalithaa handily defeated the DMK under M. Karunanidhi. During the 2016 assembly elections, the AIADMK retained its majority with 135 seats, while the DMK won 98.[3]. This election is the first assembly election after the death of two key leaders Jayalalithaa and Karunanidhi, as they died in 2016 and 2018 respectively.
After Jayalalithaa's death, the AIADMK an alliance between AIADMK legislature party leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami and caretaker chief minister O. Panneerselvam was established in 2017. Under this arrangement Palaniswami became chief minister while Paneerselvam became his deputy.
After Karunanidhi's death in 2018, Karunanidhi's son M. K. Stalin, former deputy chief minister of Tamil Nadu, became the unquestioned DMK chief. In the 2019 general election, the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance swept Tamil Nadu, winning 38 out of 39 Lok Sabha constituencies in the state. In by-elections to the assembly during the same period, the DMK won 13 seats while the AIADMK won 10.
