Why is My draft page always being declined?

Why is My draft page always being declined despite I edit it? All reviewers only comment with generic response. Can any one explain or give feedback? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Microscada Amteddy (talk) 08:10, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The submission currently has three sources. One is a university thesis. Another, not accessible to me, looks like a conference paper. As the decline notice says, this doesn't meet the criteria of "multiple published sources that are in-depth, reliable, secondary, strictly independent of the subject". Greenman (talk) 08:31, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Amteddy, ask here in the Teahouse if you wamt more details about any of those requirements. To publish the article, you need all 4 of those requirements met by multiple sources Newystats (talk) 11:25, 14 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Amteddy The draft has been declined four times, yet you have re-submitted it today without making any changes to address the concerns of the reviewers, as explained above. If you do not make improvements, it will just be declined again. Mike Turnbull (talk) 14:17, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
This was the only time I re-submitted without modifications. But in all previous declined I have changed many things and yet declined. What I want is the reason for declining as of the current state. If the reasons are just declining, how can I improve it. It is may be good to tell exactly what is the problem with my Article. 147.161.186.81 (talk) 18:53, 14 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Amteddy Every Declined is for same reason - the references are not sufficient. See WP:42. If you cannot add better refs it will be Declined again. David notMD (talk) 15:56, 16 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Adding an image to Wikipedia

Greetings. I am working on a page for an individual, and one of the items I would like to include is a coat of arms that he was awarded by the Canadian Heraldic Authority with an adoption date, an escutcheon, crest, motto, flag, and badge.

I understand that images should be on Wikipedia for appropriate use. I am relatively "young" in terms of Wikipedia content management and wish to add this coat of arms to the page currently in my editing space.

Instructions and/or additional feedback greatly appreciated!

ChristopherMaylor ChristopherMaylor (talk) 22:47, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Chrismaylor. You might want to ask about this at Wikipedia:WikiProject Heraldry and vexillology because there are two things that are important (as explained here) when it comes to images of coats of arms and their associated copyright status: the blazon and the emblazon. The blazon is the written definition of the coat of arms; in other words, it decribes the elements of the coat of arms and how they are combined together; the emblazon, on the other hand, is someone's visual rendition of a coat of arms based on its blazon. When it comes to copyright, pretty much all blazons are considered to be ineligible for copyright protect since they are nothing more than a definition so to speak; individual emblazons, however, can and often are eligible for copyright protection because they represent someone's individual and creative interpretation of a blazon. This is important when it comes to images of coat of arms because emblazons created by someone other than yourself can't be uploaded to Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons without the consent of the copyright holder (the creator of the emblazon) or being able to clearly show that the image is within the public domain (i.e. either was never eligible or is no longer eligible for copyright protection) because of its age, lack of originality (creative input) or some other reason. It also matters when it comes to Wikipedia:Non-free content because one of the criteria for non-free content use is that non-free content is needed because a free equivalent image capable of serving the same encyclopedic purpose as a non-free one can neither be found nor created. This matters with respect to coats of arms because a free equivalent image is almost always deemed possible because anyone can, in principle, create their own emblazon from a blazon and then release it under a free license that Wikipedia accepts. Of course, some emblazons might be rather crappy in comparison to others, but the possibility of a good representative emblazon (at least good enough for Wikipedia's purposes) being created does exist. That is why I suggest you as the Heraldy/Vexillogy WikiProject about this because that's where you're likely going to find Wikipedias experienced in creating embazons. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:17, 14 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
This is a very comprehensive reply and I appreciate it. I will do as you suggest, and take this question to the Wikipedia:WikiProject Heraldry and vexillology side. Also, the information you shared confirms my initial reason for asking before doing.
Cheers! ChristopherMaylor (talk) 21:52, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Citing IUCN References

Greetings, fellow editors.

I am a new Wikipedia editor and my goal is to help contribute to editing articles on threatened species (mainly Australian Proteaceae and parrot species) to help make knowledge more accessible to the general public, as many people rely on Wikipedia as a source of information. I am currently in the process adding IUCN conservation statuses to species articles that lack them, as well as taking information from reputable and up-to-date sources and adding that information to the species articles.

However, I'm not sure if I am citing my IUCN Red List references correctly, as I have seen some people do it differently. Would anyone be able to help show me how to cite information correctly?

As an example, I will be using the citation for the IUCN Red List status of my most recently edited article, Hakea pulvinifera.

For my citation, I included the title, URL, access date and publisher, using "The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species" as the publisher.

I am not confident that this is correct, which is why I am reaching out for input before I edit any more articles so I can go back and fix them all with the correct information if I am incorrect.

Here is the article I sourced my information from for the IUCN status: https://www.iucnredlist.org/species/113088579/113309795

Here is the article I am referring to: Hakea pulvinifera

Thank you for your time. I hope I hear back from someone soon and I hope my edits have been helping to make a positive change for Wikipedia.

Best regards,

Lord.of.the.Proterozoic Lord.of.the.Proterozoic (talk) 07:03, 14 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Lord.of.the.Proterozoic. I recommend that you also add the common name as the IUCN listing does, as Lake Keepit Hakea: Hakea pulvinifera. I think that 5 February 2019 is the best publication date. Cullen328 (talk) 08:00, 14 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, @Cullen328
After reading your suggestion, I decided to look at the IUCN citations of featured plant articles, as well as a page I found on citing IUCN Red List statuses, and noticed that I left a lot out and did it in the wrong format. It is supposed to be done as a journal citation, rather than a website citation. It wants only the scientific name and year of publication included in the citation, as well as the assessors, access date and some numbers, including what is known as a Digital Object Identifier, or DOI.
The assessment date could be done years before the publication date, so I suppose the publication year is the better option.
I will use the information I learned from featured articles, the Wikipedia Cite IUCN template and the recommended citations that are directly on the IUCN assessment sites, all of which I discovered yesterday, and will incorporate it into my recently edited article then seek additional confirmation to ensure it is done correctly.
Would there be any support pages on Wikipedia relating to IUCN citations where I can reach out to?
Thank you for your time and your support. Lord.of.the.Proterozoic (talk) 02:54, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Lord.of.the.Proterozoic Issues about the template itself can be raised on its Talk Page at Template talk:Cite IUCN or you can just use the standard help desk at WP:HD. Many other pages relating to citations in general exist and they all have Talk Pages but some will have few watchers. Mike Turnbull (talk) 16:09, 16 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, @Michael D. Turnbull. I suppose I'll ask my question in both pages. Lord.of.the.Proterozoic (talk) 10:49, 17 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

G-11 error when publishing an article

It has been 2 months since I wanted to upload an article and I still have not been able to do it because of error messages of "promotion or advertising" I tried to modify it many times but they keep deleting it. After it is deleted, is it possible to edit it and upload it correctly? If I can't upload it after many times, can I contact someone to upload it for me? LucasEmanuelRocca (talk) 11:52, 14 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

You have been asked numerous times not to try to use Wikipedia for advertising, so I suggest you stop now rather than waste your time. Please follow the links provided on your talk page to further understand the policies and procedures to follow in order to create an acceptable Wikipedia article. Shantavira|feed me 12:02, 14 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The idea is to identify what generates the promotion and eliminate it, the question is, is it possible to create an article of a Nano Nuclear Energy company inside wikipedia? as long as the answer is yes, you have to try until you get it, right? LucasEmanuelRocca (talk) 12:13, 14 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Now that you've followed the links on your talk page and have digested the material, LucasEmanuelRocca, let's consider your draft. You wrote: Founded in 2021, NANO Nuclear Energy Inc. started with the intention of advancing its research projects in the field of nuclear energy to more advanced stages of development, including the creation of reactor prototypes. That came with no reference. Would you want to retain it (or something like it) as part of your next version? If so, would you alter it in some way; and if so, then alter it to what, exactly? -- Hoary (talk) 12:06, 14 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I've edited it several times, looking for a neutral point of view, the initial text is as follows: "It is a private company founded in 2021 by Jay Jiang Yu. It is a micro reactor technology start-up based in New York, USA, with a vision to become a commercially focused, diversified and vertically integrated technology-driven nuclear energy company. The company's goal is to develop smaller, cost-effective and safer advanced portable clean energy solutions using novel and proprietary reactor designs." Which of the two texts is better for wikipedia, why? LucasEmanuelRocca (talk) 12:20, 14 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
WP:MISSION pretty much summarises why neither is acceptable. Mike Turnbull (talk) 12:52, 14 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Have you tried looking at an article for a similar entity, and comparing how yours sounds very different in tone compared to it? Remsense 02:45, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Of course I've tried it! But they still keep deleting it LucasEmanuelRocca (talk) 10:42, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

You had a conflict of interest declaration on your User page, but then removed it. This action is valid only if you are ending your intention to create an article about Nano Nuclear Energy Inc. David notMD (talk) 13:06, 14 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

That's right, I already finished 5 different versions of the article and tried uploading it on multiple occasions, I deleted it because I thought that because of this statement I was deleting it LucasEmanuelRocca (talk) 10:44, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I have INDEFFed as user STILL does not understand that it's their writing and not an error message. An unconnected editor is of course welcome to write about NANO if they are notable. Star Mississippi 17:28, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Queries that PetScan cannot do (search all pages where titles starts with CYP but not in category "Cytochrome P450"

Please suggest how can I search all pages where titles starts with CYP (e.g., ^CYP.*$ regexp) but not in category "Cytochrome P450"?

I tried queries with PetScan, I can specify negative category "Cytochrome P450", but it does not allows me to search without a positive category, and that is not what I have.

I need to search for all the pages about CYP ezymes, such as CYP4F2, but only pages that have no "Cytochrome P450" category, so I could add a category there.

I appreciate your help! Maxim Masiutin (talk) 17:25, 14 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. I also tried regular Wikipedia search, I specified in "page title includes" the string CYP* -- I got the results, but I could not exclude by category there. Please help. Maxim Masiutin (talk) 17:31, 14 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Does gene -deepcat:"Category:Cytochrome P450" prefix:CYP or protein -deepcat:"Category:Cytochrome P450" prefix:CYP give you a good starting point? Rotideypoc41352 (talk · contribs) 18:56, 14 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Huh, even the results that aren't redirects are in Category:Cytochrome P450. Beats me. Rotideypoc41352 (talk · contribs) 19:02, 14 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I tried -insource instead of -deepcat, and that seems to suffice as a temporary workaround. Rotideypoc41352 (talk · contribs) 22:43, 14 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that trick worked, thank you! You've made my day! Maxim Masiutin (talk) 04:47, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, I tried to search using the links that you provided, but when I view the source code of the returned pages, they already contain the . This is not what I need. I need the list of pages that have title starting with "CYP" but they should not be in the "Cytochrome P450" category. The resuls of search of the link you provided contain pages that have titles starting with "CYP", but they are in the category, while I need pages that are NOT in the category. Maxim Masiutin (talk) 04:45, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Glad the workaround worked for you. Rotideypoc41352 (talk · contribs) 04:23, 16 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Potential clash in creative commons content on YouTube?

A YouTube channel for the Western Sydney Wanderers football club uploads creative commons videos to YouTube. Sometimes they upload highlights provided straight from the broadcaster (Channel 10 and Paramount+). Would taking images from those videos be allowed to be uploaded to Wikimedia or are they not? MantasKutop (talk) 23:08, 14 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

If you suspect that an uploader is engaging in copyfraud, then on a precautionary principle you should not upload that content to wikipedia. Western Sydney Wanderers slapping a licence on content they do not own does not licence the content under the licence they apply. --Tagishsimon (talk) 23:23, 14 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It's the official YouTube channel of the club playing in said league. Wasn't sure if they had some sort of agreement on the rights of the highlights package or anything though. MantasKutop (talk) 00:26, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
MantasKutop I have no idea about images, as I haven't attempted to add any for 10 years, plus I can't understand how people get around the rules, or what licences I would need to mention if I downloaded an image, and uploaded it here or on Commons...
However I do know that even big companies steal things which don't belong to them.
American companies steal things a lot, and somehow get away with it, without being sued by the spineless British companies they steal from. Which companies am I talking about? Specifically HBO and Netflix. Who do they steal from? Usually Channel 4 and Sky, as those are the two networks they have deals with, however they occasionally steal from the BBC and ITV too.
What do they steal? They steal footage from British shows which they will be distributing at a later date to make "official" trailers, and splash their logos all over the place.
Within a day or two those unofficial trailers will have been removed after a copyright claim by the British companies who actually own the footage, and didn't give HBO/Netflix permission to make an "official" trailer, but by then it's too late, as they've been reuploaded by countless unofficial channels which somehow manage to stay up.
If I was those British networks, I'd follow the Americans example and sue the hell out of them, as they do it all the time and think they're untouchable. Danstarr69 (talk) 09:45, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
In general, you should assume incompetence with regard to copyright licensing to most such content. The organisations generally mean that the parts of the video that they themselves produced are licensed that way, not the entire broadcast. Sometimes this is stated in the description or in some copyright disclaimer on their website as well. There are a lot of organisations that do not fully understand what it means to license content and that regularly engage in copyfraud/copyright theft. When in doubt, you can always ask an organization if they can confirm that they have acquired a right to perpetually sublicense the content of the 3rd party in question (to which 99.9% of the time the answer will be no). —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 10:10, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

how edit cited reference in form

When editing an article, I know how to create a cited reference (cite; (templates) cite book). This brings up a handy form so I can fill out all the info. But after I create the citation, I want to go back & edit it. I know I can edit the source code, but it would be easier to edit the form. Can that be done, & if so, how?

I know if I want to use that same citation, I can reuse it (named references). But what if I want to use the same reference but a different page number? I know I can copy/paste the source code & change the page #, but is there a way to copy/paste & then access the form to edit it there?

If I want to use the same source in another article, do I have to copy/paste the source code, or is there an easier way? Thanks. Sunandshade (talk) 05:34, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Sunandshade: regarding page numbers in references, see WP:CITEPAGE.
AFAIK, once the citation has been created, you can only edit it manually, not by relaunching the cite tool. -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 08:00, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Sunandshade On using different page numbers, there are more than one way. If you're using ref-tag style citing, you can use Template:RP, you can see a couple in Marlowe portrait. Another way is using Help:Shortened footnotes, like History of Christianity. A third way is described by User:SMcCandlish in this discussion. If I have the choice, I use RP since I'm used to it and named refs, but the "rule" is to follow the established citestyle in the article.
Same source in a different article, copypaste is the only way I know. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 08:46, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Insertion dialogs are easy, editing dialogs are difficult. The edit screen needs to 'understand' the wikitext in order to provide such dialogs. Visual Editor can do this, because its whole point of existence is to understand what the wikitext means. So in VisualEditor you can edit a reference with a dialog once inserted. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 09:59, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, that got complicated. I read all the articles mentioned but for some, I didn't understand all the terms & for the discussion noted, there so was much "do it THIS way ... no, do it this OTHER way", that I could not follow it. Looks like the mantra is to do it the same way as others for that article. Sounds good to me.
For the article (Lagomorpha) where I want to add a few references (same reference, different page number), there were no Notes so that option was not used. Also didn't see any shortened footnotes in the Reference section so it looked like there were no cases of same reference with diff pg #s. But it could still be the case where a reference was repeated in full with a diff pg #. That would be difficult to find, as I would have to look at an author & search the entire reference list for that author, then repeat for all authors. Is that how it's done? But actually, in the help article mentioned, it says that option is deprecated anyway so I assume that should not be used. If it IS used, is it ok to use a different type for my new references?
For the comment about editing an existing template in the Visual Editor, that was a great help. Sunandshade (talk) 07:09, 17 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, a question, I don’t know where to ask it otherwise. Template:PDCFlag suppresses redlinks, if an article of the sports person does not exist. While reading Wikipedia:Red link I would think it’s better to have it the other way around?

According to the Red Link policy “ared link should remain in an article if there is a reasonable expectation that the article in question will eventually be created”. For instance, looking at the upcoming 2024 PDC World Darts Championship at the List of qualifiers all names “in black” have a page at 1 or 2 foreign wiki (de:Man Lok Leung, de:Sandro Eric Sosing, de:Alex Spellman, de:Reynaldo Rivera, de:Bhav Patel, de:Paolo Nebrida/nl:Paolo Nebrida, nl:Tomoya Goto/de:Tomoya Gotō, nl:Dylan Slevin/de:Dylan Slevin, de:Owen Bates, de:Simon Adams). Not saying they all meet GNG, but “there is a reasonable expectation that the [on of the..] article in question will eventually be created”. 109.38.132.22 (talk) 08:40, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

You can use the template parameter nolink=0 to show the redlink. RudolfRed (talk) 18:58, 16 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Changed width

Is it my imagination or did the new (narrower) width format just a little narrower? Articles that I have been editing on look a little different now with lines breaking as if the width narrowed slightly - am I imagining things? thanks. Aszx5000 (talk) 11:56, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Aszx5000 In WP:VECTOR22 there is a toggle to change width (bottom right on my desktop screen) that you may have inadvertently used. More usefully, the tech folk have this week added a feature that allows the contents menu on the left and/or the tools menu on the right to be hidden, so that the centre of the screen can be expanded to its full width. Hoorah! Mike Turnbull (talk) 14:17, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Aszx5000: Welcome to the Teahouse. Adding on to the response above, you may need to zoom out to an extent to see the in the lower-right corner. Otherwise, you can uncheck Preferences → Appearance → Skin preferences → Empty Enable limited width mode if that hasn't been done. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 16:13, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks guys. This is not about changing between the old (wider) to new (narrower) format. This week, the new (narrower) format seemed to get a little narrower again, and articles I am familiar with have line breaks in new places. I wonder if the tech guys did it when making other changes? (or maybe I am imagining it). Regardless, thanks so much for your prompt replies! Aszx5000 (talk) 12:41, 16 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Can I please get some feedback on a new article

 Courtesy link: Old Cork Homestead

Hi,

I have just made a new page, can I get some help / feedback please

Old Cork Homestead - Wikipedia Aviator66 (talk) 12:31, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Most of the last two paragraphs are irrelevant; the first sentence only is pertinent. External links need anchors (i.e. text within the square brackets telling us what each is). Not sure what the weird template in the top right is. Does Queensland Political Portraits, St Lucia really evidence this homestead? It's an international encyclopedia, but you neglect to say in which country this structure is found. The article lacks categories. --Tagishsimon (talk) 12:36, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Aviator66. I have made some minimal cosmetic changes, removing the multiple //https: from the front of the "external links" and making them visible, and removing the ones that are internal links. But the article is not currently acceptable because of the lack of inline citations. I am dubious that any of the External references are appropriate either: see WP:ELYES. ColinFine (talk) 12:59, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
ColinFine, I think it is important to note that your "not currently acceptable because of the lack of inline citations" is not supported by guielines. Per Wikipedia:Citing sources#Citation types, a general citation of the sort seen in this article is acceptable (presuming it does, in fact, evidence notability for the subject). --Tagishsimon (talk) 13:07, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
While general references aren't verboten, they're less preferred than inline citations because they don't provide text-source integrity (see WP:GENREF). Working off of just one source isn't great either, as it does a poor job of establishing wikinotability by itself (and we've got a template for that). —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 16:24, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, but that's a different thing entirely. New users should not be given plain incorrect advice on this page. --Tagishsimon (talk) 18:55, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
They also shouldn't be given advice that makes it seem like what they're doing is encouraged. While I understand that ColinFine technically isn't right, if this article went through the AfC process it'd never make it to mainspace as it is. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 23:15, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
They were not given advice which made it seem like what they're doing was encouraged, Tenryuu, so it's not clear what your point is. --Tagishsimon (talk) 23:17, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Per Wikipedia:Citing sources#Citation types, a general citation of the sort seen in this article is acceptable (presuming it does, in fact, evidence notability for the subject).

Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 23:24, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, well this is a very boring pissing contest. You want to conflate 'acceptable' with 'encouraged' b/c idk; where the issue was a user being given advice that something which is acceptable, is not acceptable. If it makes you happy, knock yourself out. --Tagishsimon (talk) 23:32, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Cool beans. So long as you understand that giving advice for something that wouldn't pass muster in the AfC process (for which it seems you're a reviewer for) isn't great, we're all good, then. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 23:34, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Iamtoxima The guidance is at WP:UPYES. In short, your userpage is somewhere to inform other editors about how you intend to contribute to Wikipedia, plus a little about yourself and your interests. Mike Turnbull (talk) 15:58, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
okay thanks Iamtoxima (talk) 15:59, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Iamtoxima, and welcome to the Teahouse. I'll add to Mike Turnbull's answer only that it is entirely optional to have a user page. Most active editors have created one, but some choose not to. ColinFine (talk) 22:12, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Iamtoxima What you currently have on your userpage is fine. However, the contents of Evans Akere may not survive the new pages patrol since it has uncited content (see WP:BLP). Mike Turnbull (talk) 18:40, 16 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! I noticed that a logo for an organization that I am involved with is incorrect here, on Wikipedia. I am wondering how I can go about replacing it? The new logo has already been uploaded to the commons, just not sure how to replace. Maoh5 (talk) 16:11, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Maoh5 – Hello! Could you provide us with the name of the organization and the file on Commons? If so, you can simply replace the old file on that article (marked in Wikitext: ) with the new one (marked in Wikitext: ). Thanks! — 3PPYB6 (T / C / L)16:14, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much! The organization is:
Birthright Israel - their Wiki page is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birthright_Israel
The updated / new logo is:
Thumbnail: REDACTED as copyright violation
and can be found at the following link https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Birthright_Israel_Logo.jpg
Is there some way to update the page to have this logo? Maoh5 (talk) 16:18, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Maoh5 – Thanks for letting me know. I did some searching myself and came across the same file; unfortunately I would wait on adding the logo to the article because it does not appear to be free media—therefore this image needs to be discussed on Commons. Should it be deleted, we need to upload a local copy of the image aligning with fair use policy. For now, please keep the outdated logo; if we find out this is free media feel free to add it. My apologies, and thanks!3PPYB6 (T / C / L)16:24, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Maoh5, it depends on whether the file is available under a free license.
If it's freely licensed:
 1. Add a link on the file's page to somewhere on the birthrightisrael.com website showing the CC license listed.
 2. When you go to update the page Birthright Israel, you will likely get a message about the page being protected. Click the "Submit an edit request link".
 3. On the edit request page you will type something like "Replace File:Birthright Israel.jpg (outdated logo) with File:Birthright Israel Logo.jpg (current logo)."
If it's used as fair use:
 1. Upload it directly to Wikipedia as a "non-free file" here: Wikipedia:File upload wizard Wikipedia hosts fair use images; Wikimedia Commons does not. The files on the Commons are used by other projects, like Spanish Wikipedia, that do not accept fair use media.
 2. Select the fair use option in the upload wizard.
 3. Select the "logo of an organization" option.
 4. You may need to fill out Non-free use rationale logo for the file's summary.
 5. Depending on the image's resolution, a bot will likely scale the image down. This is done for all fair use images.
 6. When you go to update the page Birthright Israel, you will likely get a message about the page being protected. Click the "Submit an edit request link".
 7. On the edit request page you will type something like "Replace File:Birthright Israel.jpg (outdated logo) with File:Birthright Israel Logo.jpg (current logo)."

Back-and-forth between different (the same?) people

I have been aware of a kind of slow edit war on Logan (film) going on this past week. Trying to communicate with someone who is being disruptive but I don't know if what I'm doing is useful either - or if I have the right person. It seems like multiple users are adding back the same words with the same edit summary. Where should I go with this? I feel like the people (person?) on the other end has good intentions based off other contributions. Reconrabbit (talk|edits) 17:01, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Quick Facts

Newbie here. I see some articles have quick facts some dont. How is that created? Where might I have looked to find this information on my own, outside the Teahouse?

I was hoping someone could move the Grae Cleugh article from sandbox to user space, or write it. its a 5 min read/create. As a freelance casting director I think Cleugh is an underlooked actor and his debut play is a double olivier award winner.
Not notable in USA, but quite famous in Scotland, particularly with the LGBT community.
I am close to an accusation of homophobia, and racism. 86.136.166.36 (talk) 21:13, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I think he was in Greys Anatomy, but I cant find a reference. 86.136.166.36 (talk) 21:14, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You'll find we're unmoved by your "close to an accusation of homophobia, and racism". The draft did not evidence the notability of the subject, quite apart from the policy issue of rejecting inputs from blocked users. You're welcome to disagree with that assessment, but equally you're expected to respect it. --Tagishsimon (talk) 21:16, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
How can you expect me to accept something that is wrong.
You will not convince me that black is white.
He wrote a significant Scottish play that has been produced internationally, is a double olivier award winner, and should have a page of its own f***ing Games, because it marked a watershed moment for censorship in british theatre. Michael Billington, The Guardian
He has written a number of other plays of which at least 2 are well known with numerous reviews in the respected national press (not tabloids).
In addition he has worked extensively as an actor with numerous reviews in the respected national press (not tabloids).
Your argument of not-notable does not hold water.
You are therefore either racist (against scots), homophobic, or both at the same time.
I expect your res ponse to be along the lines of "just because you want him to be notable doesnt mean... He is. 86.142.106.78 (talk) 21:25, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
My argument was that the draft did not evidence the notability of the subject, and that there was the policy issue of rejecting input from a blocked user. Accusations of racism and homophobia are silly, unhelpful, unpersuasive and unlikely to win support for your cause. If they make you feel better, than I guess that's a consolation. --Tagishsimon (talk) 21:32, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You can't be "racist" against Scots, because Scottish isn't a conventional "race" (it's a nationality/ethnicity). You could be xenophobic, though, or prejudiced, or discriminatory. Use words correctly, especially when they have as much baggage as "racism". Cremastra (talk) 00:55, 16 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
To answer your question: blocked users are not allowed to edit any page in Wikipedia other than their own user talk page, and even that access can be blocked. New editor with a small editing project for comment.

A small group of family members have reviewed the Wikipedia page of their deceased (1991) father/grandfather and want to update it to correct some small mistakes, and amplify it reasonably. Interesting guy, pretty widely published by academic presses and peer reviewed journals. Family members are academics in the same discipline as their father/grandfather and a librarian and library worker who did the preliminary work to have the fathers papers accessioned into an academic archive. Is this an advisable project or is there too much COI-like proximity to the subject?

I am to be the editor. I feel I understand the principals of Wikipedia esp. that things need to be cited reliably. The current page is rated "C". We are looking at comparable academics in the same discipline and using these as models somewhat, This biography would fall under several wikipedia projects: Anthropology, Biography, academic, etc. I have added my name to the Wikipedia anthropology project. I have a draft of the proposed changes in "Word--Tracked changes" but we're still working on it. Can I attach the draft in word to my talk page? and ask for pre review say by the Anthropology Project? I'd love to have a guide to help me a long and share the name of the academic and my draft. Crawlstart (talk) 23:16, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Because all claims made in wiki articles have to be verifiable, you can only add material that is otherwise attested in a reliable source. So, information only known by family members cannot be added. There is considerable concern about COI here, but you are allowed to edit the article as long as the edits adhere to a neutral point of view, and all additions are proportional to the subject's representation in reliable sources.
As for ratings—the only article ratings on Wikipedia that have formal requirements and are subject to a review process to establish adherence to those requirements are good articles and featured articles, I wouldn't worry too much whether a given article has been rated a C or B, since it is mostly a judgment call.
If you feel comfortable doing this, I would attempt to deliberate all your changes on the talk page while making them, to ensure that your COI doesn't unduly reflect in your edits. Best of luck, cheers. Remsense 23:32, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Crawlstart, please be aware that a Wikipedia account is for one individual person only. Shared accounts and group accounts are not permitted. All of the family members have conflicts of interest that should be declared. As for a Word document, I recommend against it, because the syntax and markup is dramatically different from Wikicode. See WP:CHEATSHEET for a basic overview of Wikicode. I suggest that you draft corrections and other changes in your sandbox page, and add them to the article in small chunks. Massive rewrites without explanation may encounter disagreement from other editors interested in the article. Cullen328 (talk) 23:57, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Crawlstart & @Remsense: while the difference between an article being rated "Start" or "C" might be mostly a judgement call, there are actually specific B-Class criteria that should check have been met before rating an article a "B". For more information, see Wikipedia:Content assessment. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 03:40, 16 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. So I understand that our project (or better, it has to be *my* project, as the editor) is not recommended because of COI. But if I believe I can do it within the principles and guidelines, I need to clearly state the COI, in the subjects "talk" page and my own user page. Then I should think more about carrying the project out in my sandbox and make actual changes, bit by bit and my changes will be marked with a COI note.
But as far as finding a single "guide" mentor to do this editing isn't a recommended strategy? I should just let the WP processes take care of reviewing my changes? Crawlstart (talk) 16:42, 16 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Crawlstart To a certain extent it depends on the article. You can check how many editors have it on their watchlist by clicking on the "page information" link. If it is large, then any change you make is likely to be reviewed by many others and you can make incremental edits, as advised. If there are <30 watchers (any fewer and the tool won't say how many) then the safest process is to use the edit COI template on the article's Talk Page: see that link for details. There are experienced editors who quickly follow up these COI requests even when they are not watching the specific biography. Mike Turnbull (talk) 18:11, 16 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a way to fix broken links and archive the references? Is there some tool which can achieve this? Sajjad Altaf (talk) 06:21, 16 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Sajjad Altaf: If you're referring to references with dead links (i.e. 404 errors) that used to work, then yes, User:InternetArchiveBot performs this task automatically every day. However, it takes a long time to check every link on Wikipedia automatically, so the bot might take months or years to fix any specific link. If you want to perform this task yourself, you can try using the Webarchive template, or if the citation was written using cite web, you could add the |archive-url= and |archive-date= parameters. Is there any specific article you wanted to help with? --Habst (talk) 14:04, 16 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Habst Thanks for your reply, I want to be self-sufficient in these matters. I will try the template you suggested. How about the references which are not fully formatted and missing information in them. Is there a way to fix those? Sajjad Altaf (talk) 15:26, 16 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Deleted biography

Singer the Jr:s

Hello,

There was a profile on William Henry Singer Sr., a steel baron in Pittsburgh. Someone deleted it. Can it be retrieved?

There doesn't appear to be a deleted article with that name, but if you know the specific name of the article you can try an undeletion request to retrieve its contents. However, the article won't be put back on the site if its subject isn't notable. Remsense 06:27, 16 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

There is a William Henry Singer who "was the son of Hester Lared Harton and William Henry Singer, a wealthy steel magnate who started producing cannons and other weapons for Union troops during the Civil War had become rich." I found this obituary. Retired millionare guy from "Pittsburg". His son was a painter, so if we're doing that article on him, I propose we merge them into "William Henry Singers" or something of that sort. Most of the search results for "William Henry Singer sr Pittsburgh" are for his son, maybe the article could be on William Singer Jr with a section about the father. 71.112.180.130 (talk) 17:56, 17 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I ask because Singer Laren mentions that the person in question sold the "Pittsburgh Bessemer Steel Co.", with a link to Bessemer process, which has no mention of the person. It does, however, mention William Kelly several times. I have no idea if they are the same person though. Tollens (talk) 06:34, 16 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Frittle, and welcome to the Teahouse. Nobody is in charge of events: these things are determined by community consensus. The best place to discuss this would be one of the subpages of the village pump; but I suspect that it is too late to firm up an idea and get consensus for this year (I may be wrong). Also, note that many users frown on suggestions to use Wikipedia for purposes other than creating an encyclopaedia, though there are some humourous essays, and there are April Fools. The last time these drafts were raised at the Teahouse, they appeared to be autobiographical. So, @Nargiz bashirova, are you in any way connected with User:Khanlar Asadullayev, who is also editing them today? Mike Turnbull (talk) 16:21, 16 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I know him. I would like to create a page for him. would you advice that himself will do this? Or I can create page for this artist? Nargiz bashirova (talk) 16:48, 16 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Nargiz bashirova: he should not write about himself, for all the reasons outlined in WP:AUTOBIO. You may do so, but you must first disclose your conflict of interest (COI); I have posted a message on your talk page with instructions. -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 16:52, 16 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot! Nargiz bashirova (talk) 17:18, 16 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, will do:) Nargiz bashirova (talk) 16:45, 16 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Nargiz. Looking at the citations in your draft:
1,2,11 (all the same source: please see NAMEDREF) and 10 are interviews, so not independent sources, and do not contribute to notability.
3 appears to be a blog, and so is not a WP:reliable source, and does not contribute to notability.
4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 have only passing mentions of Asadullayev, and do not contribute to notability. (7 has a little more about the particular artwork, and could possibly contribute to establishing that that work is notable, though it is not enough on its own. But it says nothing about Asadullayev).
Thus you have not one single source that meets the minimum requirements of reliability, independent, and significant coverage. Without such sources your draft will never be accepted.
This is what makes writing a new article so challenging - not the writing, but understanding what kinds of sources are required. This is why I always advise new editors to spend a few weeks or months making improvements to existing articles and learning how Wikipedia works before trying to create a new article. (I see that you did make 10 minor edits to articles first, which is a good start, but you did not pass on to working with references. This is a bit like saying "I want to build a house, so I've painted some windows, so now I know how to start building a house"). ColinFine (talk) 21:35, 16 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Who is the highest person in charge of Wikipedia that has an account?

Frittle (talk) 20:20, 16 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Frittle. No one is "in charge" of anything on Wikipedia. It is a collaborative, volunteer run project. User: Jimbo Wales is a founder and the most famous Wikipedian, but it has been many years since he has bossed anyone around. Cullen328 (talk) 20:30, 16 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

But wouldn't that make her the lowest person? FunLater (talk) 21:19, 16 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Page combining

I found a page that I previously created should be combined with another page. The page in question is Villarejo (disambiguation) being combined with Villarejo (surname). I moved the inline text from the surname article to the disambiguation article, but I’m unable to remove the surname article from the mainspace. Could somebody help me here? Roasted (talk) 22:19, 16 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I've blanked Villarejo (surname) and made it a redirect to Villarejo (disambiguation). Cheers, ayakanaa ( t · c ) 23:13, 16 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject Leadership

Who is in charge of a WikiProject? A.FLOCK (talk) 04:31, 17 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Most WikiProjects have no formal hierarchies. A notable exception is WP:MILHIST, the most organized project, which has a Coordination department. Mach61 (talk) 04:40, 17 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Suitability of the topic 'history of tidal power' as a new article

Hi, I'm considering creating an article to cover the history of tidal power development. There have been many companies that have developed and tested turbines. Individually, a lot of these would be questionable in terms of notability. However, I think the topic as a whole is notable.

The pages Tidal power, Tidal stream generator, and List of tidal power stations have some of this information, but there is a lot more detail that could be added which would possibly make these pages unwieldy, and I'm not sure exactly fits there anyway. Many of the devices that have been tested are no longer generating power, but I think it would be useful to document these in one place.

My proposal would be to have a short introduction, a section on companies with a paragraph or 2 on each (or a link to their page where notable), and a section with a table with details the turbines that have been tested (what, where, when, etc).

I'd appreciate some feedback on this before starting, hence this post. Thanks :) Drnoble (talk) 11:25, 17 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

About making statement

I know that Wikipedia is uncensored but while quoting from sources, can I add terms such as "King of X begged to the King of Y for mercy" if the source is saying so? The reliability of the source is agreed upon the discussion at reliable source noticeboard. Imperial[AFCND] 11:45, 17 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know why WP:CENSOR would apply? Sungodtemple (talkcontribs) 13:44, 17 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I want to make sure that if there would be any issue if I use "X begged to Y". Can I use that if the source is saying so? Also, I am aware that if Wikipedia view that as a non neutral POV statement. Imperial[AFCND] 14:16, 17 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That's fine if that is reported by a reliable source, though it is not good English. It ought to be "X begged Y". Shantavira|feed me 14:56, 17 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I just showed a demonstation. Imperial[AFCND] 15:03, 17 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Philip Cooke (Historian)

 Courtesy link: Draft:Philip Cooke (historian)

Can you please revise that page? I don't understand why I have comments on that page which dates back to 2020 and 2021 when I have created the page only today. Also, please let me know what I need to do to improve it and have it approved. All the info are true and verified: I have created the page for a person I know (I was NOT paid), and he has checked the info personally. Apparently, the disambiguator was supposed to be lower case (apologies), I am not sure how to change this at this stage. many thanks! Neolinguista (talk) 15:34, 17 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

You need to find independent sources that cover him in-depth, your sources are primary. I have fixed the lower case problem. Theroadislong (talk) 15:43, 17 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
thanks for the disambiguator!!
independent as in not created by him or directly related to his university website? Ok, I will try and find them, but it is not easy. Thanks. Neolinguista (talk) 16:49, 17 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Neolinguista: presumably by "comments" you mean maintenance tags; itseems you added (the first two of) them yourself when you created the draft. -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 16:15, 17 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
you are right, it was my fault...how can I fix this now? Thanks for your help in this matter. Neolinguista (talk) 16:52, 17 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, ok, that was easy, I have done it thanks Neolinguista (talk) 17:00, 17 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
(EC) You seem to have added the 2020 and 2021 dates in your first edit - https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Draft:Philip_Cooke_(historian)&oldid=1190054129 - perhaps by copying from the Stephen Gundle article as the basis of your article? --Tagishsimon (talk) 16:17, 17 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, you are right, I have written Gundle's article a while ago and I have used it as a model for Cooke's one (they had similar carrers). I did not realize I was copying the maintaince tags too - apologies, this happens when you create a page every two years, you never get truly good at it! How can i solve this problem now? Thanks for your help. Neolinguista (talk) 16:52, 17 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, I have solved that problem, which was ridicolously easy to solve...sorry to have bothered you. Neolinguista (talk) 17:01, 17 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Selected publications (how-to add)

Perhaps this topic already exists - if so - please redirect.

I would like to add a 'Selected publications' list to a page/article. The publications can be found on the internet using the automatic citation engine - and added to the References list.

I would (also) like to excerpt a few of the citations from the Reference list and past them into the body of the article without re-formatting them. However I am unable to, for example, copy + paste individual entries from the References list.

I've tried the templates - but there is no automatic citation engine available.

NOTE: I have tried "+" 'references list' - but can only import the full complete references list, and not select individual references.

Hope this makes sense. Thank you! Science and such (talk) 16:33, 17 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Heh, ok answering my own question:
am able to go into the html source and cut & paste from there.
Is that the best solution? Science and such (talk) 16:40, 17 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
