SABMiller (South African Breweries - Miller) (LSESAB, JSE: SAB,Official site) is one of the world’s largest brewers, with brewing interests and distribution agreements in over 60 countries across six continents.

Six of the company’s brands are in the world’s top 50 beer brands and the group is one of the largest bottlers of Coca-Cola products in the world.

The group reported an annual turnover of $18,620m in 2007, up 22% from $15,307m in 2006.

SABMiller has expanded rapidly from its South African origins, acquiring local brands and brewing operations in Europe, Asia and the Americas.

Founded in South Africa in 1895, the operations of South African Breweries (SAB) were mainly limited to southern Africa until 1990, where it had established a dominant position in the market.

SAB’s first investment in Europe was in 1990 through the purchase of an interest in Compañía Cervecera de Canarias SA in the Canary Islands.

After listing on the London Stock Exchange in 1999 to raise capital for acquisitions, the group purchased the Miller Brewing Company in North America from the Altria Group in 2002, changing its name to SABMiller. Altria Group retains a 28.7% ownership interest in SABMiller.

Following this, the group’s next major acquisition was of a major interest in Bavaria S.A., South America’s second largest brewer and owner of the Aguila and Club Colombia brands in 2005.

In the same year, SABMiller acquired a 29.6% stake in Harbin Brewery, China’s oldest brewer, preparing the group to benefit from growth of the beer category in developing markets.

Ownership

As of May 2007, SABMiller's share ownership by geographical spread was as follows:

  • United Kingdom 37%
  • Republic of South Africa 31%
  • Colombia 15%
  • Europe (excluding UK) 8%
  • USA 7%
  • Rest of the World 2%

Global operations

SABMiller has grown from its original South African base into a global company with operations in both developed markets and in emerging economies such as Eastern Europe, China and India.

The group's brand portfolio, which is weighted towards emerging markets where both demographics and rising per capita consumption figures are encouraging, promise rewarding future growth for the company.[citation needed]

Africa and Asia

SABMiller’s brewing operations in Africa span 31 countries.

In China, the group’s national brand in that country, Snow, is produced in partnership with China Resources Enterprise Limited, is the leading brand by volume in China.

SABMiller is the second-largest brewer in India and has joint ventures in Vietnam and Australia.

The region contributed 12% of the overall group’s earnings before interest, tax and amortisation (EBITDA) in 2007.

Brands include: 2M, Castle Lager, Castle Milk Stout, Eagle, Fosters, Kilimanjaro, Royal Challenge, Snow and Zorok.

South Africa

The group’s most established market to date, sales in South Africa contributed 33% to group EBITA in 2007.

Local subsidiary SAB Ltd’s soft drink division is also the country’s largest producer of products for the Coca-Cola Company.

Brands include: Castle Lager, Castle Milk Stout, Hansa Marzen Gold, Hansa Pilsener, Carling Black Label, Castle Lite, Sterling Lite Lager, Redd’s, Brutal Fruit and Sarita.

Europe

SABMiller’s entry into the European market began in 1995 with the acquisition of Dreher in Hungary. The group’s European operations are mostly centred in the fast developing consumer markets in Eastern-Europe (Hungary, Romania, Poland, Czech Republic and Russia), although there are operations in Italy, France, UK and Germany where it imports its international premium brands.

Brands include: Pilsner Urquell, Nastro Azzurro, Peroni, Tyskie, Ursus, Dreher, Grolsch and Lech.

Latin America

SABMiller first entered the Latin American Market with the acquisition of Cerveceria Hondurena in Honduras, making the company the first international brewer to enter Central America. Since then, the group has expanded its Latin American operations into six countries, including Colombia, El Salvador, Ecuador, Panama and Peru.

Lager brands include: Aguila, Club Colombia, Pilsener, Golden Light, Port Royal, Salva Vida and Balboa.

North America

The USA is the world’s most profitable beer market; SABMiller’s local subsidiary in the region, Miller Brewing Company, headquartered in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is the country’s second largest brewer.

Miller also produces beer under licence in Canada and distributes in Mexico.

Brands include: Miller Lite, Miller Genuine Draft, Olde English 800, Milwaukee’s Best, and Miller Chill.

On October 9, 2007, SABMiller and Molson Coors Brewing Company announced a joint venture to be known as MillerCoors for their US operations that will market all of their products.

Recent acquisitions

On 19 November 2007 SABMiller announced the acquisition of Royal Grolsch, brewer of the Dutch premium beer brand Grolsch, making it the world's no.1 brewer, according to beer market data specialists Plato Logic. For several years SABMiller have attempted to acquire an international premium beer brand for mature and near-mature markets.

On 12 September 2006 SABMiller acquired a 100% interest in Foster's India for a cash consideration of $127m on a debt-free basis. The transaction saw SABMiller assume ownership of all of Foster's assets in India, including the Foster's Lager brand.

On 25 June 2007 SABMiller announced that its U.S. subsidiary, Miller Brewing Company had entered into a ten-year licensed brewing partnership with Foster's Group Limited to brew the Foster's Lager and Special Bitter brands sold in the U.S from November 2007 forward.

On 08 May 2008 SABMiller announced that it agreed to acquire a 99.84% interest in the Ukrainian brewer CJSC Sarmat. The purchase price was not being disclosed - however the value of the gross assets to be acquired was approximately US$130 million.

Environmental Record

SABMiller runs a number of sustainable development initiatives across its companies and in the countries it operates in. [citation needed]

During 2006-2007

  • The ratio of water consumption per hectolitre of beer utilised in production was down 1%.
  • The group emitted 12% less carbon dioxide per hectolitre of beer produced.
  • 79% of subsidiary SAB Ltd’s beer is sold in returnable containers.
  • 94% of all waste is recycled or reused.

SABMiller and several other major corporations will attend "The Green Supply Chain Summit" in June of 2008 in London. The conference put on by Ethical Corporation, will aim issues of carbon footprint, energy and water conservation, and elimination of toxic waste. SABMiller's Head of Suistainable Development Andy Wales stated, "Whether the issue is water, carbon, or packaging, responsible companies are now working with their suppliers to influence the environmental footprint of the entire value chain. This conference brings together leaders in the field to share vision, innovation and progress."[1]

SABMiller along with other UK brewers, have introduced new lightweight bottles that use 30% less glass. The lightweight bottles are designed to not only reduce the amount of waste materials but also cut down on energy used in production and distribution reducing the company's carbon emissions.[2]

Along with their own sustainability reports SABMiller submits to a number of third party annual reports that review the company's environmental record. The corporation provides links to such reports on their own website.[3]
