Music theory

  • Advancement Theory --Popularized by Chuck Klosterman centers around the idea that great artists will create things that audiences aren't ready for yet
  • Subtones - possibly "undertones" theorized by Heinrich Schenker?
  • Equitonal - an instrument can be tuned to an equitonal heptatonic scale or a non equitonal heptatonic scale.
  • Takadimi - beat-focused rhythm training method
  • Hyper-metrical phrasing
  • Andy Radin webmaster responsible for making fourfa.com, reference site for emo music
  • Dominant Preparation
  • Magellan Chord
  • Latin chord progression - The "i bVII bVI V" chord progression (e.g., E-minor D-Major C-Major B-Major), routinely used in Latin American music
  • Literalism (music), a late-20th century method of composing music using physical representations of elements of musical composition to create everything from classical orchestral pieces to apparently formless moments of noise
  • Dead Note - also known as a false note, represented by X in music script, when played it has no discernable pitch
  • Tcherepnin Scale - The Tcherepnin Scale is a synthetic scale derived from his use of the major-minor triad in order to accommodate such chords. In the key of C, the scale is written C Db Eb E F G Ab A B, which allows major-minor triads starting on C Db E F Ab and A. (Source: http://www.tcherepnin.com/alex/bio_alex.htm)

TRO's history was discussed in a Rolling Stone article by Rian Malan about the song writer Solomon Linda, who received no money for his world-wide hit, "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" / "Wimoweh" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wimoweh, a hit for the Weavers that subsequently made millions for Disney when used in the cartoon movie, The Lion King. TRO had transferred the publishing rights to Abilene Music (while keeping the authors' credits). Milan's article was the basis for a South African documentary A Lion's Trail by François Verster that documented the song's history. Screened by PBS, in September 2006, the documentary won an Emmy Award. In July 2004, the song became the subject of a lawsuit between the family of its writer Linda and Disney. The suit claimed that Disney owed $1.6 million in royalties for the use of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" in the film and stage production of The Lion King. Meanwhile, publisher of The Weavers' "Wimoweh", TRO/Folkways, began to pay $3000 annually to Linda's heirs.
