Sharma (Sanskrit शर्म, Hindi शर्मा:Urdu: شرمہ) is a name used in the Indian subcontinent, frequently as a Brahmin surname or given name.[1][2][3] As a noun in Sanskrit, Sharma has various positive connotations, such as "bliss", "happiness", "shelter" and "protection."[1] According to the Dictionary of American Family Names the name Sharma has the following origin: Indian: Hindu (Brahman) name from Sanskrit šarma ‘joy’, ‘shelter’. [2]

In much of North India, Northeast India and Nepal, it is regarded as a family name, though it does not necessarily denote a unique paternal lineage. In South and South-central India, it represents a first-name or given-name. For instance, Janamanchi Seshadri Sarma's surname is Janamanchi and sharma is part of the given name of Mayurasharma.

The name SharmaHa (one of the noun forms of Sharma/Sharman) is written as शर्मः in Sanskrit and शर्मा in Hindi.[4] An alternative version of the name used in the city of Varanasi and the Indian states of Assam and Andhra Pradesh is Sarma.[5] Some Assamese people also use Sarmah.[5]
