Notes

Dear Tropical cyclone editor,

As a member of the Tropical Cyclone Wikiproject, you are receiving this message to describe how you can better tropical cyclone articles. There are hundreds of tropical cyclone articles, though many of them are poorly organized and lacking in information. Using the existing featured articles as a guide line, here is the basic format for the ideal tropical cyclone article.

  1. Infobox- Whenever possible, the infobox should have a picture for the tropical cyclone. The picture can be any uploaded picture about the storm, though ideally it should be a satellite shot of the system. If that is not available, damage pictures, either during the storm or after the storm, are suitable. In the area that says Formed, indicate the date on which the storm first developed into a tropical depression. In the area that says Dissipated, indicate the date on which the storm lost its tropical characteristics. This includes when the storm became extratropical, or if it dissipated. If the storm dissipated and reformed, include the original start date and the final end date. Highest winds should be the local unit of measurement for speed (mph in non-metric countries, km/h in metric countries), with the other unit in parenthesis. The lowest pressure should be in mbars. Damages should, when available, be in the year of impact, then the present year. The unit of currency can be at your discretion, though typically it should be in USD. Fatalities indicate direct deaths first, then indirect deaths. Areas affected should only be major areas of impact. Specific islands or cities should only be mentioned if majority of the cyclone's effects occurred there.
  2. Intro- The intro for every article should be, at a minimum, 2 paragraphs. For more impacting hurricanes, it should be 3. The first should describe the storm in general, including a link to the seasonal article, its number in the season, and other statistics. The second should include a brief storm history, while the third should be impact.
  3. Storm history- The storm history should be a decent length, relatively proportional to the longevity of the storm. Generally speaking, the first paragraph should be the origins of the storm, leading to the system reaching tropical storm status. The second should be the storm reaching its peak. The third should be post-peak until landfall and dissipation. This section is very flexable, depending on meteorological conditions, but it should generally be around 3. Storm histories can be longer than three paragraphs, though they should be less than five. Anything more becomes excessive. Remember, all storm impacts, preparations, and records can go elsewhere. Additional pictures are useful here. If the picture in the infobox is of the storm at its peak, use a landfall picture in the storm history. If the picture in the infobox is of the storm at its landfall, use the peak. If the landfall is its peak, use a secondary peak, or even a random point in the storm's history.
  4. Preparations- The preparations section can be any length, depending on the amount of preparations taken by people for the storm. Hurricane watches and warnings need to be mentioned here, as well as the number of people evacuated from the coast. Include numbers of shelters, and other info you can find on how people prepared for the storm.
  5. Impact- For landfalling storms, the impact section should be the majority of the article. First, if the storm caused deaths in multiple areas, a death table would work well in the top level impact section. A paragraph of the general effects of the storm is also needed. After the intro paragraph, impact should be broken up by each major area. It depends on the information, but sections should be at least one paragraph, if not more. In the major impact areas, the first paragraph should be devoted to meteorological statistics, including rainfall totals, peak wind gusts on land, storm surge, wave heights, beach erosion, and tornadoes. The second should be actual damage. Possible additional paragraphs could be detailed information on crop damage or specifics. Death and damage tolls should be at the end. Pictures are needed, as well. Ideally, there would be at least one picture for each sub-section in the impact, though this sometimes can't happen. For storms that impact the United States or United States territories, this site can be used for rainfall data, including an image of rainfall totals.
  6. Aftermath- The aftermath section should describe foreign aid, national aid, reconstruction, short-term and long-term environmental effects, and disease. Also, the storm's retirement information, whether it happened or not, should be mentioned here.
  7. Records- This is optional, but can't hurt to be included.
  8. Other- The ideal article should have inline sourcing, with the {{cite web}} formatting being preferable. Always double check your writing and make sure it makes sense.

Good luck with future writing, and if you have a question about the above, don't hesitate to ask.

For submitting Innis for GA...

Your Opinion is More Important than You Think Barnstar
Your submission of Innis for GA may help resolve this long-standing issue between members of the project. You wouldn't think it from the comments I've been posting on the various talk pages, but I do agree with you that we don't necessarily need to wait for a TCR before GANing an article. Let's watch how the debate ensues on the TC talk page and see if anything will change. Thegreatdr (talk) 22:20, 8 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jason,

When I was looking at the article, I saw that it said that RSMC Nadi upgraded TD 12F to TD Gene and then upgraded it to a cat 1 cyclone. when looking at the reference, I couldn't see it in there. Then I checked the history and saw that you added that. How it that possible?

WPTC convert template policy

Re: the reversion of my edits to Cyclone Aila. As a Wiki patroller, I regularly improve articles by adding the convert template to show international units and help our readers understand numbers in dimensions and terms familiar to them. Would you please help me learn what's correct by pointing me to the specific page/section that describes the convert template policy on tropical cyclone articles. Thanks. Truthanado (talk) 01:07, 26 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I dont know where its written in fact its probbably one of those unwritten rules :), but we dont use the convert templates as we need to round to the nearest 5 to follow what the RSMCs and TCWCs use in their operational and post storm products. TThe Convert template dosent round to the nearest 5 as far as i am aware. Jason Rees (talk) 01:40, 26 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the reply. In addition to putting your reply above (just to keep things together), I have asked if this could be added to the template, see Template talk:Convert#Rounding. Truthanado (talk) 02:03, 26 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Jason Rees. Welcome to the Amazing Race Wikipedia. In your travels, you will encounter two types of tasks. In a Detour, you have a choice between two tasks. Both of you must work together on this. In a Roadblock, one team member must work on a task alone. Your Amazing Race Wikipedia submissions page is located here. Enjoy the competition! Oy, the vind!

Thank you for helping out with the references on wind. I've spent more time dickering about with the stupid reference format than anything else during the FAC process. There was another comment about them today, which I think I have fixed so that all the refs now have the first name/surname in the same order. Thegreatdr (talk) 23:53, 27 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Amazing Race Wikipedia Starts!

Hello, Shappy. This is a reminder that Amazing Race Wikipedia will start very soon. At 00.00 (or whereabouts), our host Firestorm will place the first Detour on your submissions page. Again, the Detour is a choice between two tasks; both members of the team choose one task and work together to complete it. A Roadblock is a task only one team member must perform; he/she may not have any help from the other team member. Good luck and enjoy the Race! :-) Shappy (talk · contribs) and Firestorm (talk · contribs) --EdwardsBot (talk) 13:33, 30 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

IRC

I've been invited in the past, but don't have any consistent times/days during the week where I could be on regularly because of my rotating shifts. I doubt I could ever get approval to take part in IRC during work hours either. I like the use of the talk pages for various storms to discuss items important to those particular systems, or the project's talk page for items to be addressed as a project. It is what the talk pages are there for. Why re-invent the wheel? Thegreatdr (talk) 01:32, 8 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You wouldn't mind if I submitted this to FLC, would you? Julian's comment tempted me to submit the list, but yours and Cyclonebiskit's comments are sorta holding me back. I wanted to ask them both as well, but they've been offline for a few hours (and I regrettably don't expect them back online for a while). They don't need to be contacted about the email, but they need to know that there was significant impact from the storm and that is missing from their report on it. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 14:55, 24 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jason. I've added a comment regarding that complex reference at the FLC. It would be good if we could find a mutually acceptable solution and progress the currently-stalled FLC. Cheers. The Rambling Man (talk) 11:23, 25 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Its not unfair - We shouldnt be using NRL for upgrades/downgrades whilst i storm is active also when i checked the RBT it was not showing up anything for 1800z.Jason Rees (talk) 20:53, 12 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Wat was that ?

It's just barely a Cat:4, 115kts and besides, it's still just barely weaker than Bill was. Bill peaked at 115kts and the lowest pressure was 943mbar, Vamco's lowest pressure is 945mbar :P Cyclonebiskit (talk) 12:04, 21 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Can't use the NRL or JTWC pressure as it's unofficial and just a set pressure for each windspeed, they'll revise that pressure to 937mbar which is the set pressure for 115kts outside the NHC AoR. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 12:53, 21 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,

This is really not that important, but in the 1994-95 season, La Reunion had the name Eliceca on the list. However, I can't find it in the IBt or La Reunion's own best track. Also, there are no JTWC systems that crossed into the SWIO. Did they skip Eliceca?

The PDF links are not stable due to repository moves and reorganizations. According to the site itself, they insist on using the hdl.handle.net to maintain a persistent link to the PDF. The PDF is still located on that page, but the link is now updated. There is a reason the site says, "Please use this identifier to cite or link to this item: http://hdl.handle.net/10125/2184". Hard links to PDF's on scholarspace.manoa.hawaii.edu* are discouraged by the site. The PDF is still located at the link, but you have to access it with another link at the bottom. wind

Hi Jason. I added image File:Bride and groom on the ruins of sutro bath.jpg. IMO this image is one of the best, or the best to show the wind brcause there is only one thing that could have been picked up by the wind and it was, and because it is a high resolution, high quality , and good composition image. IMO it could be tried for FP. The image was removed two times. May I please ask you what is your opinion about adding the image to the article? Thanks.--Mbz1 (talk) 14:22, 29 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, Jason.--Mbz1 (talk) 15:01, 29 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
If you want to add it into the article, the only problem I see is that the bride's veil will barely be seen when the image is shrunk to a 250 or 200px resolution. The article is way too large to be seen in its full resolution/size within the article. Thegreatdr (talk) 14:28, 30 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

2009 PTS protection

I've asked Malinaccier (talk · contribs) to drop the protection the 2009 PTS, since it's currently unmanageable. My thinking is that we can deal with the edit warriors individually. –Juliancolton | Talk 16:17, 29 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ike Changes?

Why did you self-revert yourself when someone put what I think is incorrect information? It's not on the TCR, just checked. Darren23Edits|Mail 00:53, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Adding to that, I want to update the Season effects chart so anything like Parma and Melor's landfall locations could you please tell me what I need either on the uneasy IRC or by here on wiki. Darren23Edits|Mail 01:07, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject report

JR, just wanted to let you know that I replaced your answer on the WikiProject report with my own so as to keep everything consistent. Hopefully this is acceptable, but if not I'll happily revert. –Juliancolton | Talk 01:56, 12 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Favor on Parma

Jason, can I ask you a favor? Can you finish the meteorological history of Typhoon Parma until Saturday, October 17 2009? Because we have a project in my school about this typhoon. Ok.Thank you very much.take care.god bless.Jpuligan_12 (talk) 17 October 2009, 13:50 (UTC).

Ummm...

Why the heck do you not want invests on here, when you are trying to put non-official designations on tropical depressions? That's messed up. BIG TIME. At least I am putting true information! Syntheticalconnections (talk) 14:08, 13 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have one last thing to say to you. Did it ever come to mind, that the official agencies, don't recognize unofficial depression designations? Did it??? Syntheticalconnections (talk) 19:04, 16 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Re: PAGASA

So, should we move Parma and Ketsana to Typhoon Parma and Typhoon Ketsana? (Same would go for Fengshen if we follow this. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 16:28, 16 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Toddst1, I have quite a bit of respect for you, but please don't give condescending templates (including "Welcome to Wikipedia") to rollbackers with years of experience and 14,000 edits. Sometimes hand-written notes are better-suited for the situation. –Juliancolton | Talk 00:02, 21 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Julian is right - I hadn't realized your history. Let's try it this way: What's up with this edit? I blocked a user for edit warring on that similar info in the same article this week and you know that's not how we cite things. If there was a proper citation in there with access date/time as is appropriate for rapidly changing info, perhaps there wouldn't have been an edit war. Additional comment here. Toddst1 (talk) 15:10, 21 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your reply on my talk page. I've also commented on User talk:Jpuligan 12.
As I attempted to acknowledge above, Julian is right and I shouldn't have used a template and it was not my intent to be disrespectful. You're a solid contributor and we all take shortcuts sometimes. No need to give you a hard time about it. Without looking closely enough it looked like Jpuligan 12's issue continued. Sorry for the ruffled feathers here (not that you have feathers 8-). Re:Cease and Delist

Done and sorry for the trouble. Leave Message, Yellow Evan home

Hi Jason. I'm rather concerned at the use of jargon in Low-pressure area. The article is very difficult to understand for the average reader, so would not - as it stands - meet GA criteria. I have started a WP:GAR, and my concerns are here. Regards SilkTork *YES! 11:32, 25 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jason. Thanks for reverting the article of the "Most Intense Tropical Cyclones". I am a first-time editor so I didn't know how to revert. Anyways, I tried to edit Super Typhoon "Gay" and "Zeb" because it was written there that it had a 900 mb of pressure but according to a Wikipedia article attributed to Super Typhoon Gay (1992), it had a minimum central pressure of 872 mbars. Same thing could be said for Zeb so I tried to edit it. I haven't tried the "preview" option first before saving. My apologies for the mess and thanks for reverting. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Rex 1213 (talkcontribs) 03:25, 7 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Talk:Tropical Storm Etau (2009)/GA1

I'm starting a GA review at Talk:Tropical Storm Etau (2009)/GA1. You had posted a note there about a required update. Do you recall what the update concerned? Is there still an outstanding update on it? --maclean (talk) 07:08, 7 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello

Hello,

I have seen that you have put up the "Changes at RSMC La Reunion" on the 09-10 SWIO talk page. By any chance could you send me the link to the report.

Thank you --Anhamirak 17:31, 7 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Tropical Depression 25W of the Northwest Pacific is already a Tropical Storm

Hi Jason. I just want to inform you that TD 25W has already been upgraded by the JTWC as a Tropical Storm. I made an edit on the article because I saw the latest report of JTWC calling the depression Tropical Storm 25W. Here is the link to their latest report. [15] It says there that it got 35 knots of wind with gusts of up to 45 knots. --Rex 1213 (talk) 23:05, 7 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Okay so you are basing on the JMA reports. Alright thanks.!--Rex 1213 (talk) 23:18, 7 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah you're right. I'm still kinda confused.. You mean the 10-min sustained winds on the articles of the Pacific Typhoon seasons here on Wikipedia are based on JMA whereas the 1-min sustained winds are based on JTWC's? --Rex 1213 (talk) 03:21, 8 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. =) --Rex 1213 (talk) 03:32, 8 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmmm.. I have just thought about this one all over and I think there are far too many tragedies related to tropical cyclones than we might even know. So I've decided not to further change that section since it will be just a useless documentation of millions of disaster. So, shall we remove it or not? And sorry for a delayed response about this. --Rex 1213 (talk) 13:22, 11 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Did Hurricane Ida already dissipate?

Hello Jason. I have noticed that in the 2009 Atlantic Hurricane Season, it is already indicated there that Hurricane Ida has already dissipated. However, I have found a certain website still issuing advisories on Ida as a Tropical Depression as of writing this post. Here is the link [16]. So my quesion is this, is Ida still active or not? --Rex 1213 (talk) 13:22, 11 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
