Akshay Kumar

Akshay Kumar is an Indian film actor, producer and martial artist who has appeared in over 125 Hindi films.[1] Kumar had studied martial arts in Bangkok and on returning to Mumbai he started teaching martial arts. One of his students, who was a photographer recommended him to do modelling and with his help he gained a contract from a small company.[2] Once during his modelling career he missed a flight to Bangalore where he was supposed to shoot in a shirt brand's advertisement. Disappointed with himself, he visited a film studio along with his portfolio. Fortunately that evening, Kumar was signed for a lead role by producer Pramod Chakravarthy for the movie Deedar.[3] His fist film appearance was as a martial arts instructor in the 1987 Kumar Gaurav starrer film Aaj.[3][4] When he began his acting career in the 1990s, he primarily starred in action films and was particularly known for his appearances in feature films commonly called the "Khiladi series", which included Khiladi, Main Khiladi Tu Anari, Sabse Bada Khiladi, Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi, International Khiladi, Mr and Mrs Khiladi, Khiladi 420 and Khiladi 786, as well as other action films such as Waqt Hamara Hai, Mohra, Elaan, Suhaag, Daava, Sapoot, Keemat – They Are Back, Sangharsh, Aankhen and Khakee. These action based roles helped him earn the sobriquet "Indian Jackie Chan".[5] He has been nominated for Filmfare Awards eight times and won it two times.

In 1994 his 11 films were released.[6] He had given 14 flop films in a row before acting in Jaanwar[7][8] and Sangharsh which received critical acclaim.[9] Past 2000 he also gained fame for his drama, romantic and comic roles.[10] In 2001, Kumar played a negative role in the film Ajnabee. The film won him much acclaim as well as Filmfare Best Villain Award and IIFA award 2002 for Performance in a Negative Role.[4][11] He further gained acclaim with his performances in romance films like Yash Chopra's Yeh Dillagi , Dil To Pagal Hai, Dhadkan, Humko Deewana Kar Gaye, Jaan-E-Mann and Namastey London. In Dil To Pagal Hai Kumar played a supporting role for which he received a Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award nomination.[12] He has also acted in several drama films like Jaanwar, Dosti: Friends Forever, Waqt: The Race Against Time and Patiala House. His comic performances in films such as Hera Pheri, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Garam Masala, Welcome, Bhool Bhulaiyaa, Singh Is Kinng, Housefull and Housefull 2 received critical acclaim. His performance in Garam Masala earned him Filmfare Best Comedian Award in 2005.[4][11] With Garam Masala, Akshay surpassed Shahrukh Khan and Salman Khan on the box office for the first time.[11] His success had soared in 2007, when he starred in four consecutive commercial hit film; Welcome, Bhool Bhulaiyaa, Heyy Babyy and Namastey London and he is the second actor after Rajendra Kumar to have been the lead actor in four hit films released in the same year.[7] In 2008, along with his wife Twinkle Khanna, Kumar founded the Hari Om Entertainment production company.[13][14] The company had co-produced 10 feature films including Singh Is Kinng and OMG – Oh My God!. Singh Is Kinng was a commercial success[2] and Kumar's company made a huge profit.[15] It had also produced a global warming based documentary White Knight directed by Aarti Shrivastava.[16]

In 2011 he founded another production company called Grazing Goat Productions.[17] His commercially and critically successful films in 2012 included Housefull 2 and Rowdy Rathore with both of them grossing over 100 crore (US$12 million) as well as Oh My God (which he co-produced).[18][19][20] His production venture Breakaway was the highest grossing English film in Canadian film history.[21][22] On 16 February 2013, many media outlets reported that the boxoffice collection of Kumar's films had crossed 2,000 crore (US$240 million) and till date is the only Bollywood actor to do so.[23][24][25][26] He has also sang a Punjabi devotional song Nirgun Raakh Liya and the profit from this album was donated to the victims of the train bombings of Mumbai on July 11. He charged 1.5 crore (US$180,000) per episode for Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi (season 1).[15] His film Boss, remake of the Malayalam film Pokkiri Raja, was panned by critics and was declared the third biggest flop film of 2013.[27][28] His recent film Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty has received positive reviews and is a commercial success.[29][30]
