I have a patent pending on the craps layout and have been all over wikipedia looking for someone to submit my idea to at alot of the big casinos, but there is no info pertaining this. Can you please help me with finding this info. Thank you, Joel184.1.4.178 (talk) 02:33, 20 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia doesn't publish new ideas, as it only aims to summarise what has already been published in good-quality publications such as books, academic journals and respected news outlets. So if your idea takes off and people start to write about it, it may become appropriate to mention it in the encyclopedia; but not until then. But please don't try to use Wikipedia to publicise your idea; Wikipedia does not allow advertising. -- John of Reading (talk) 05:24, 20 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
John, before jumping on the questioner, please read the question carefully and respond to what he actually asked.

    login issue

    Hi,

i just created a new login and password. Received the confirmation by email (meaning they got my login right) asking me to confirm my email online. I tried to do it and the system says my login is wrong... But I received the email so this means the email login was right.

    Can you help? Thank you,

Antoinette Jansen — Preceding unsigned comment added by 194.78.55.37 (talk) 11:57, 20 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The most frequent cause for this is the fact that both username and password are case sensitive. The second one is when you set up one or the other using '1' (the numberal) for 'i' or 'l' (lower-case L), and similar typographic tricks; then forget you did so. I hope one of these suggestions helps. --Orange Mike | Talk 12:18, 20 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
If you still have problems then please quote the exact message. Email confirmation is only about clicking a link in an email to confirm it is your email address. It does not involve login so I'm unsure where your problem is. User:Antoinette Jansen was created today and if you remember the password then you can log in whether or not you have confirmed an email address. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:17, 20 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    Search section headings

Can you search just section headings? Like if I want to find all articles that have "World War" in a section heading, but not the ones that just have it in the text somewhere? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.4.93.100 (talk) 13:20, 20 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

No, not with the search engine. That would require a custom search of the database. SpinningSpark 12:42, 21 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
You can achieve a similar functionality by typing "=World War=" into Special:Search. Not always. --Glaisher [talk] 13:15, 21 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    Good/Featured article

I'm curious if an article about 2014 FIFA World Cup qualification – UEFA Group D can be brought to the good/featured article status.--MJ for U (talk) 13:38, 20 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

There is no reason, in principle, that it could not be done. There is no importance criteria for eiter FA or GA; any article at all can be brought up to standard. The requirements for GA are at Wikipedia:Good article criteria and for FA see Wikipedia:Featured article criteria. The only thing against it is that it could be considered by some to be a list, in which case it does not qualify. However, I am sure that enough prose could be added so that it was not so list-like and more article-like, and if not, there is such a thing as featured lists. Question

Hallo Wikipedia, I would like to know if one can not download a Video from Wikimedia. "has issues" disclaimer for Jeffrey Moore (author)

Hi! Wikipedia has a policy that biographies of living persons must strictly have reliable sources and references. If you cannot produce the proper reference for any piece of information, you would have to remove that for the time being, so as not to cause potential trouble (like being regarded as attack to that person). --Nigelliusnitrox (talk) 16:05, 20 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Although there are several references, these all relate to comments about his books, they are not about him at all. There are no references as to where he was born, educated, lives, what he has translated, what he has taught and where. In a biography of a living person these are facts that need to be referenced. Thanks for your post, but we would need a reliable, verifiable source before altering an article, particularly about a living person. Hi -- I seem to be stuck in an editing battle and I'm not sure how to move forward.

The technology company uTest recently changed its name to Applause -- by and large, we moved previously approved content from the uTest page to the Applause page, but this content is continued to be deleted by a particular editor and we are left with a very short, incomplete entry. All of the awards listed, company location and other information is properly sourced -- nothing is over the top in terms of language or superlatives. I'm curious as to how to best proceed with this.

    Eharrison3 (talk) 14:26, 20 June 2014 (UTC) Eharrison3[reply]

You appear to be associated with the subject of the article and as such have a conflict of interest. You should therefore not be editing the article at all, let alone edit warring to keep your promotional material in it. You will be blocked from editing altogether if you continue. SpinningSpark 13:15, 21 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    Reverting

    Under WP:3RR this is stated:

"An editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page—whether involving the same or different material—within a 24-hour period. An edit or a series of consecutive edits that undoes other editors' actions—whether in whole or in part—counts as a revert."

I think I have understood the rules under WP:REVERT. When copy-editing I often have to rewrite clumsy sentences, but is it right that it does not count as a revert unless in so doing I restore what is on the page to an earlier version, in whole or in part? The answer seems obviously "yes" to me, but how does that then fit with the above, "An edit or series of consecutive edits that undoes other editors' actions ... counts as a revert"? All my changes when rewriting will involve undoing other editors' actions, obviously! --P123ct1 (talk) 15:01, 20 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

A revert is an edit that substantially restores the previous content, removing or re-adding previous content. A copy-edit does not change the meaning of the page, but clarifies it, and so should not be considered a revert by any reasonable interpretation. If an edit changes the meaning of the article, rather than simply improving the way it states the meaning, it isn't just a copy-edit. Now, if a previous editor restores the original clumsy or ungrammatical sentences, and the copy-editor restores the rewrite, that is a revert, but that isn't a likely scenario. Does another editor have an opinion? Robert McClenon (talk) 16:23, 20 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds good enough to me! Hope others agree. And if you do break the 3-revert rule, do you get a warning message before being banned for 24 hours? --P123ct1 (talk) 17:26, 20 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

As to whether you get a warning before being blocked, the answer is sometimes yes, sometimes no. Sometimes you will be warned after 2RR, because that is still edit warring, although it doesn't cross the bright line. Sometimes you will be warned after 3RR. In some cases, two editors both go to 4RR or 5RR before there is admin attention, and then they are likely to be both blocked without the need for a warning. By the way, the action on edit warring is a block, not a ban. A block is a temporary or indefinite suspension of editing privileges by an uninvolved administrator. A ban is a formal revocation, either of all editing privileges, or of some subset of editing privileges. A site ban is only imposed by the community or the ArbCom. A topic ban may be imposed by the community or the ArbCom, or occasionally by arbitration enforcement for an area that is under discretionary sanctions. Robert McClenon (talk) 17:52, 20 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Please exercise caution when editing in contentious areas. Most articles that need copy-editing are not in contentious areas, but a few are, in particular in areas about national conflicts (e.g., Israel and Palestine, India and Pakistan) that are largely written by editors whose first language is not English. In those areas, especially, if your copy-edit is reverted, it is better to discuss on the talk page or go to arbitration enforcement rather than to get into a copy-edit war. Robert McClenon (talk) 17:52, 20 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Can another editor answer the question about copy-editing and agree or disagree with my interpretation, please? Robert McClenon (talk) 17:52, 20 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your helpful reply. I was just a little worried as I have been copy-editing the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant article (re ISIS and Iraq), obviously a very hot topic at the moment, where some passages and recent additions are clearly not written by people whose first language is English - but I have not come a cropper with anyone yet (have nearly finished) and would hate to edit-war. I have had to rewrite quite a few sentences, so you can see why I was so keen to get the revert rules straight in my head! --P123ct1 (talk) 19:48, 20 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The article is subject to discretionary sanctions. It is an example of the articles to which I was referring that are written largely by editors whose first language is not English, and that are subject to edit warring because they are about real wars. If your edits are copy-edits, preserving the meaning of text that was written by editors whose first language is Arabic, while improving the writing, you should be all right. If any of the factional editors reverts you, then rather than restoring your edits, which is a revert, you might do well to go to arbitration enforcement, although it is a complicated procedure involving warning the offending editors with a specific template. Robert McClenon (talk) 21:46, 20 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I don't think it will come to that, but you never know. There has been quite a lot of edit-warring on this one, but over facts more than anything, which is to be expected. :{ --P123ct1 (talk) 00:09, 21 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Copyediting is not edit warring. It only becomes edit warring if you were to restore your "copyedit" after it had been reverted by another editor. Please also note that articles involving the Arab-Israeli conflict and other conflicts in the Middle East (including Syria) are under special Arbitration Committee restrictions which includes a 1RR restriction and the possibility of blocking without warning. SpinningSpark 16:33, 21 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I see, thanks. Have had to take an axe to some of the text, but there have been no complaints. I did see the 1RR warning on the Edit page, but didn't realise a block could come without warning! :{ --P123ct1 (talk) 21:47, 21 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

(edit conflict) I assume you are talking about the article on Charles Koppelman? However, I am not sure what you mean by "our page" - are you admitting to a conflict of interest?
Looking at the page, there are numerous external links in the text, which need to be removed, or turned into references, along with a certain amount of overlinking and it has a rather promotional tone - but you could be talking about a totally different article. - Arjayay (talk) 15:29, 20 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes that is the page I'm talking about. There is no conflict of interest for the page, no. So you would advise that hyperlinking is taken out, and try to reduce the promotional tone. Could you please give me an example of an external link? How do you reduce overlinking? — Preceding unsigned comment added by YogiOffice (talkcontribs) 18:55, 20 June 2014 (UTC) This template must be substituted.[reply]
"Overlinking" refers to the proliferation of internal links to other articles and you will find it explained further here. The article also uses too many external links buried within the text. If they are useful as references, they should be formatted as such, as explained here, otherwise they should be removed rather than just moved to the external links section; see WP:EL for the kind of links that are permitted there.--ukexpat (talk) 19:00, 20 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you to everyone who is helping. Although, I did notice that there is now a newer warning on the page. I am trying to fix the problems on the page. Once this has been achieved, will those warnings disappear? Also, is it okay to keep people/pages without their own wikipedias hyperlinked?

Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by YogiOffice (talkcontribs) 19:34, 20 June 2014 (UTC) This template must be substituted.[reply]

The maintenance templates do not disappear automatically. When you think you have dealt with the issues that they raise, you can remove the templates yourself, but please explain why you have removed them, either on the talk page or in your edit summary.--ukexpat (talk) 20:28, 20 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@YogiOffice "Conflict of interest" means that you have a connection to the subject of the article. Your username and editing history suggest that you do indeed have a conflict of interest. If so, you should certainly not remove the maintenance templates yourself. You should instead request an independent editor look at it. SpinningSpark 16:40, 21 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, I understood "Conflict of Interest" differently but now I understand. Where can I find an independent editor? Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by YogiOffice (talkcontribs) 17:23, 23 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    Lost in Request for comment

Hi there, I am new to the Request comment/User conduct resource, but I am being pushed to use it after trying other resources. I wrote the details required and used the template provided to post it (had some layout redundancy problems), but as soon as I posted I was really surprised to see that a senior editor removed it on formal grounds, I can not remember exactly what. I posted on his userpage talk to know more on the reasons for his removal, some 4-6 days ago as far as my memory goes. However, I lost the link to both the userpage and the Request comment resource's archived disputes..., now I am completely lost. Before I go for a second Request for comment attempt, I would strongly appreciate any tips to track my removed post and the above userpage! Iñaki LL (talk) 15:31, 20 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there! I took the liberty to check your contribs and retrieved your previous filing here. Referring to the next edit summary, it seems to be the case that you should be posting your dispute to Wikipedia:DRN instead of RfC. An article that needs some fixing: Safesearch

Hi everyone, I recently ran into the SafeSearch article and I think it needs a bit of a fix. While I see the need of making an article long enough so that it won't end up as a stub, the current version of this article is too biased to be in a neutral point of view. After a brief single sentence description, the next paragraph is a long criticism along, gives the reader an alternative choice, then another paragraph of criticism. I'm not really sure how I can go about fixing this, so all I can think of is suggesting moving it with a bigger google-related article. --Jeevies (talk) 03:38, 21 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

In this instance I'm not so sure there is a problem with the sourced content's tone or existence but rather it only feels unbalanced because other descriptive content we would expect to be ultimately included were this article more developed has not yet been added. In other words, the way I look at it, this short article needs content additions and not necessarily any removal of what's present. That process you can boldly help with of course. A search of Google Books and News indicates there's lots of sources to mine.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 08:27, 21 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Expanding on Fuhghettaboutit's answer, if you do come across an article that needs major improvement in an area, you can consider tagging it with the respective cleanup tag. I agree with Fuhghettaboutit's assessment of the article though, and I don't think this article deserves a tagging. Tags generally stay on the page for a pretty long time and should be placed on more serious cases needing attention. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 13:59, 21 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Redirection to mobile wikipedia on ipad

Suddenly I get redirected on my ipad to this bloody mobile version of wikipedia. You should stop this. I don' need the mobile version on iPad, i can zoom. Thank you for the strongly worded feedback, but alas, the mobile version isn't going anywhere. Mobile sites are the norm, and most readers support it.
If you want to revert back to the desktop view, you can do so at the bottom of every page. I'm not sure about other browsers, but Google Chrome's mobile browser lets you select an option that always loads the desktop version of websites. I'd suggest you take a look at that, or find another browser with a similar feature. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 17:02, 21 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) I feel I should point out that the people that patrol this page are not the ones who make the decision on these things. And secondly, if you'd like to switch back to the desktop version, there is a link at the bottom of the page. I had the same issue with my iPad and after clicking the desktop site link, have not had the mobile site come up again. Dismas|(talk) 17:04, 21 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
OP stated "I don't keep cookies" so that is not saved. Many other mobile browsers also do support desktop view, so that is probably the best option which I can also think of. . --Glaisher 17:43, 21 June 2014 (UTC)

Incorrect Hours and Days for the RV/MH Hall of Fame

We have recently noticed that you have posted the incorrect hours of operations for the RV/MH Hall of Fame in Elkhart IN. We have always been open on Mon-Sat 9am to 5pm. Last year we extended our days to include Sundays from March thru October. Sunday hours are 10am to 3 pm. Please correct your records on your website immediately. We have lost many visitors because of your mistake!

    Thank you

Err - as far as I can see, we don't list any opening hours for RV/MH Hall of Fame - neither right ones, nor wrong ones, so we can't change anything.
Are you by any chance referring to a photo or text shown to the right of a Google search? Google's Knowledge Graph uses a wide variety of sources. There may be a text paragraph ending with "Wikipedia" to indicate that particular text was copied from Wikipedia. An image and other text before or after the Wikipedia excerpt may be from sources completely unrelated to Wikipedia. We have no control over how Google presents our information, but Google's Knowledge Graph has a "Feedback" link where anyone can mark a field as wrong. - Arjayay (talk) 18:26, 21 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I think an "Hours" field in Google's Knowledge Graph is usually copied from Google+ where your page [1] also says closed Saturday and Sunday when I click a link in the "Contact Information" box. Change it there if you have access. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:51, 21 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I am writing because I am the owner of unbrokenheart, it is a sterling silver broken heart, mended completely by hand with a strand of 14k gold. I would love to have it included on Wikipedia, however I don't know if it is appropriate since it is obviously a retail product. I believe it is unique, in that it has been created to truly help others overcome a broken heart of any kind, and in that it has been in business for over 10 years, and mended over 10,000 broken hearts in that time. The unique aspect is that each one is truly mended by hand, only after it is ordered, and as difficult as it is sometimes to mend each one, we will never change that component of the unbrokenheart. I would be happy to send you more information or even an unbrokenheart to see, but I didn't want to do anything until you let me know if it is acceptable.... Thank you so much for your time...and I love, love, love Wikipedia and would consider it an honor to have our unbrokenheart included....

Hello, Catherine. To expand what PrimeHunter has said, its status as a retail product does not prevent Wikipedia having an article on it, but neither does its humanitarian aim guarantee one. The criterion is solely whether reliable sources, independent of the subject (such as major newspapers or books from reputable publishers) have written at length about the the subject. Writing about an organisation or a product which has not already been noticed in this way looks very much like promotion, which is forbidden on Wikipedia, however worthy the cause. --ColinFine (talk) 08:17, 22 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. I have nominated the article for deletion, not because you disagree with it, but because I cannot find any substantial independent references to it, so it fails our criteria for notability. If others find sources and contest the deletion, and the deletion discussion ends up with a result of 'keep', then you should make any suggestions for improvement on the article's talk page. By the way, your username breaks Wikipedia's rules on usernames by suggesting affiliation to an organisation. Please change it to an individual username. --ColinFine (talk) 08:41, 22 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    Cross-wiki problem

Juzumaru (talk · contribs) has apparently got the impression that it's my responsibility to discuss English Wikipedia problems with him in Japanese. When he was told not to do this on English Wikipedia, he insisted that I go to Japanese Wikipedia. I am just plain not interested in using Japanese Wikipedia, but I humoured him for a bit. When I got tired of this I blanked my talk page there, which caused a brief edit war with an unrelated third party who didn't understand that I was not there to edit Japanese Wikipedia and didn't realize it's my right to blank my own talk page. Now Juzumaru is complaining on English ANI about me blanking my talk page on Japanese Wikipedia.[2]

I'm here because I need someone who he hasn't already decided is his enemy to explain to him that it's not my responsibility to use Japanese or to regularly edit Japanese Wikipedia.

    Can I get some help?

    126.0.96.220 (talk) 12:03, 22 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hijiri 88 repeatedly writing in Japanese to talk my page.(126.0.96.220 is the socks of Hijiri.) For this reason, I have a reply Japanese him in the Japanese version Wikipedia. Then, Hijiri has been deleted my comments from my talk page [3]. And in the admin Board , Hijiri has hidden Juzumaru's comments.[4] I am not interested in Hijiri at all. (I have not talked to him from me.) --Juzumaru (talk) 13:37, 22 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
See what I mean? I only ever wrote in Japanese to explain points that had already been PAINLFULLY elaborated for him in English. PLEASE SOMEONE TELL THIS PERSON TO KNOCK IT OFF. 126.0.96.220 (talk) 14:37, 22 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Wait. But how does the IP come in again? There is an actual ja user named Hijiri. Dustin (talk) 14:42, 22 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Should this not be discussed at the relevant ANI report guys. There's no need to spread your conflict out. --Skamecrazy123 (talk) 14:45, 22 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@User:Dustin V. S. Sorry, the ja.wiki account is me. I'm editing here as an IP for reasons. See the first line of the ANI report for details. Or email User:Cuchullain, User:TParis or User:Yunshui. User:In ictu oculi could probably explain the problem as well, but I'm pretty sure he doesn't like off-wiki communications.
@User:Skamecrazy123 I don't want to spread the conflict. I'm just worried that Juzumaru's posting an endless screed of nonsense is going to drive everyone away from the ANI thread just like last time and the time before that. This is entirely separate from my suggestion on ANI that he be blocked. I want someone -- anyone -- to explain to Juzumaru that he is not allowed hide English Wikipedia discussions on foreign language wikis.
    126.0.96.220 (talk) 15:11, 22 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I understand situations where one user knows two languages and the other knows two, but is much better at one. In those situations, it is acceptable to discuss one wiki at another. However, it doesn't really make sense to me entirely what the issue is, so I will try to read that report you mentioned. Also, is there any actual proof that the IP user is a sock? If not, that is nothing more than an unfounded accusation, Juzumaru. Dustin (talk) 15:22, 22 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Well, the real problem is that Juzumaru is WP:NOTHERE and should be blocked. After a two-month long debate we finally got a consensus that he agreed to, but four months later he has now come back and insisted that we reevaluate the previous consensus, on another Wikipedia. No matter how much evidence was presented by me and the other users in the discussion, he apparently is completely unable to understand us. By the way, I am not a sock. I am the same user. I have never tried to hide this. Juzumaru is not "lying" here, though. He just literally can't communicate effectively in English. 126.0.96.220 (talk) 15:30, 22 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Well, this line is a bit concerning: "But Juzumaru not interested in Hijiri." Still, this would probably be best left at the incidents noticeboard. There have not yet been any replies from other editors yet, but there should be eventually. Also, I know it may be difficult, but try to keep the insults to a minimum. You were probably already aware of that, but you don't want that to be used against you. Dustin (talk) 15:45, 22 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, thanks :) In the (in my opinion quite likely) event that no one else does respond on ANI, can you help me with the "I'm not going to read your comments or reply intelligibly, but I'm going to plow forward anyway and pretend you're the one who isn't communicating" problem? User:Ross Hill also tried dealing with this problem back in December and inadvertently made it worse... 126.0.96.220 (talk) 15:49, 22 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

if an image is on google images what copyright tag needs to be used? NickGibson3900 (talk) 15:19, 22 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

What do you mean by "on google images"? Google's image search is a way of searching the web for images. To find the copyright status of an image, it is irrelevant that you found it using Google Images. You should look at the page where Google found it, and see if that page says anything about the image's copyright status. If it says nothing, it is safest to assume that someone retains copyright in it. Maproom (talk) 15:58, 22 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    @User:Maproom http://www.livingly.com/copyrights/ what tag should i use for these guidelines/ — Preceding unsigned comment added by NickGibson3900 (talkcontribs) 16:11, 22 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The page you have linked to is the policy against user's uploading copyrighted material to the site. The page you want is the terms of service page where you will see that the user's of the site retain copyright and you are therefore not able to use the images on Wikipedia. The ToS do say that Zimbio have the right to release images on a CC licence, but unless they have explicitly done so with a Wikipedia compliant licence for the specific image you have in mind, then you cannot use it. From my time on the English language wikipedia, it seems that it has been viewed as inappropriate to have a "Members of Delta Delta Delta" (or similar) category. Total Article Count

Hello, Do redirects count towards the total number of articles created on Wikipedia or for a user?

    Best, Upjav (talk) 23:44, 22 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

If you mean like with the "N" indicator as may be seen here, then yes. If you mean like when judging the qualifications for user rights, then no, I believe. If I am incorrect, then others feel free to correct me though! Dustin (talk) 23:49, 22 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
There are no user rights based on number of pages created. Whether or not redirects are counted depends on the tool doing the counting. There is no Wikipedia "built in" fuction for this, but this tool on Wikimedialabs can be used and whether or not to include redirects is selectable. SpinningSpark 02:38, 23 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
When I said judging qualifications, I meant like for template editor for example, you are expected to have helped and/or created multiple templates, and similar things apply with many RfAs I have seen too. Dustin (talk) 02:46, 23 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
While a template editor is expected to have done template work and RfA likes to see article work from candidates there is no requirement to have created any pages. In fact, adminship is sometimes granted to candidates who have done no article work at all. It depends on what the candidate says they are going to do with the tools, but the proliferation of new user rights is slowly making this kind of admin unnecessary. SpinningSpark 02:55, 23 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Spinningspark: Hmm... really? That is new to me. I came to my own conclusion when looking at loads of ancient RfAs as may be seen at Special:PrefixIndex/Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/, but I guess some things have changed since many of those. Dustin (talk) 03:04, 23 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, all. As for the 'Wikipedia-wide' count, I'm curious as to whether redirects count toward the 1,xxx,xxx articles on English Wikipedia. Upjav (talk) 03:32, 23 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
No, redirects are not included, only content pages. See special:statistics which shows the same number reported by {{NUMBEROFARTICLES}}. I think the number shown on the front page comes from the same source, but it does tend to lag the special page. SpinningSpark 09:51, 23 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The definition of what exactly is counted is explained at Wikipedia:What is an article?#Lists of articles and statistics. SpinningSpark 10:12, 23 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    Change user name

When I created my account I was not aware that my user name was going to be too close to the page I'm trying to create. I'm trying to create a pge for myself. Back in 2006 I created a User Name of dandipaola. The page I want to create is "Dan DiPaola" which is my name. Can you share with me how I may change my user name from "dandipaola" to Dan DiPaola with the correct capitals and spaces. The system won't let me create a page with that name because it is too close to that user name

Dan DiPaola — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dandipaola (talkcontribs) 00:14, 23 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Basically don't create a page about yourself. If you're anyone important, one will be created by someone else. See WP:COI CTF83! 01:32, 23 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
    To answer the question, go to Wikipedia:Changing username CTF83! 01:36, 23 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
    • Unfortunately Dan, CTF83! is correct. If you were to create an article about yourself, it would be seen as a conflict of interest and likely deleted (as has been done . However, you can draft a potential article by following the instructions laid out at articles for creation and submit it for review. If you are deemed noteworthy enough, the article might well be moved to the mainspace. However, before you even begin, I'd recommend looking over Wikipedia:Notabilitythis subpage in particular — and re-evaluating whether your activities satisfy the threshold for inclusion listed at those pages. The vast majority of people do not fulfill those sets of criteria.

As for your question, the username "Dan DiPaola" is actually not even registered yet. You could follow CTF83!'s link above and go through the instructions outlined there, but since you only have one live edit to your name (which was to post here), I'd recommend just starting a new account under your username of choice. Log entries "resolve"

What does "resolve" mean in the logs? I clicked Special:Log/Rodhullandemu by mistake, and to my surprise I found a whole list of "resolve" items, e.g.

00:09, 2 October 2012 Rodhullandemu (talk | contribs | block) resolve (He has a discography, which will link to more detail on his most important albums.)

Note that no page name is given, so I can't check any specific page's history. The user was indef-blocked in 2011, not even retaining email access, so this entry obviously reflects something that isn't exactly editing. Nyttend (talk) 05:04, 23 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The html source says class="mw-logline-articlefeedbackv5" so it's a leftover from Wikipedia:Article Feedback Tool/Version 5 which has since been removed. I don't think the feedback pages are visible now but it appears blocked users could post to them. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:10, 23 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
For more info, the word refers to what the piece of feedback was marked as. Other leftovers include "helpful", "unhelpful", and "noaction", as well as "hide", which I think was only available to oversighters and/or rollbackers (I think the last might be from new user feedback or whatever as I can't remember anything marking an article feedback piece as non-actionable.) - Purplewowies (talk) 16:20, 23 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

A cleanup template on the top of a page might not be enough...

What can one do after adding a cleanup template to a totally butchered article to only find this template's addition just is not enough of a step in the right direction to take? Where can one go? What choices are available? I would like to consider myself a fairly experienced user but never sought the answer to these questions. Typically, templates are enough of an addition to an article to satisfy me. Now I finally have stumbled across what is a total of three disasters that are burned in my brain. I don't have the time to rewrite freaking entire Wikipedia articles although I wouldn't mind if I did. These pages rely on sources that build their world view according to the Old Testament. For example, I was shocked to read an Adam in the Garden of Eden-esque story on a feline communication article. Wikipedia should instead contain sources of scientific nature which do in fact exist. Long story short, I'll end it here, is I'm wondering where or if there is a place where I can say, "Hey! This needs fixing. Somebody get on it!" and somebody gets on it and fixes it. I did notice a Help Out section in the Community Portal, which is pretty much exactly what I am looking for, but it seems as if I can not add my problem articles that I find in need of work... major work... to this. Marc Bago (talk) 07:51, 23 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Marc Bago: You can ruthlessly pare it down, possibly to a stub, and though doing so not at all limited only to unsourced content, it's often more straightforward where it is unsourced (note WP:BURDEN); you can look in the page history for a prior, better version to revert to; you can ask for help with a rewrite at an applicable and active WikiProject (you can sometimes locate applicable ones by looking to the talk page to see if they've identified the article topic as in their bailiwick); you can nominate it for speedy deletion, for proposed deletion or take it to articles for deletion, if it qualifies for one of them. It's very hard to give targeted advice without knowing what page you are talking about. Can you specify?--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 12:45, 23 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Fuhghettaboutit: Hi. Re: Example of an article I consider to be in need of serious help. Here: dog-cat relationship. I don't know how to link to the state it was in when I stumbled across it, but look at the version in history before I made a snip of text. Also notice how long this article has been in this subpar and downright incorrect state. At the time I first came across it, I felt as if I was reading a Christian fundamentalist's heavily distorted take on the relationship between dogs and cats based solely on their observations of two pets they have at home and that only. The whole article just reads as trashy. What's disappointing is I came across plenty of scholarly studies without any difficulty on this type of communication and whatnot that could actually fit very well in the article. Plus it's a darn interesting topic to read about. Yeah. That's about the size of it. Marc Bago (talk) 13:35, 23 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I see that the article has been heavily edited down today. Since the two experienced editors who edited it did not tag it for any of the three types of deletion, neither will I. However, in general, if an article is really bad, any of the three types of deletion action is a reasonable response. Robert McClenon (talk) 17:19, 23 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I wonder if this is about "Photo of Carol Kicinski in kitchen, 2013.jpg"? That photo has been uploaded to en:Wikipedia, where its page says it is "a candidate to be copied to Wikimedia Commons". So you could bypass the copying, by uploading it directly to Wikimedia Commons but with your preferred name. Maproom (talk) 15:08, 23 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Tnx for your time Berthgmn (talk) 14:13, 23 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed, I believe. The problem, as you indicated, was that the Wikidata entry wikidata:Q415043, which was linked to nl:Stevioside and similar terms in other languages, was linked to the English article Steviol glycoside, and Wikidata entries cannot be linked to more than one article in the same Wikipedia. I have fixed it by changing it to link to Stevioside, and separately, linked Steviol glycoside to nl:Steviolglycoside, which has created a separate Wikidata entry wikidata:Q2805600. It is unfortunate that when you hit this problem, it doesn't give you any links to anything useful, not even to the Wikidata entry.
(Incidentally, the way I found it was by going to http://www.wikidata.org and searching for Stevioside. It used to be that the "languages" section in the sidebar gave you a link to that, but it doesn't seem to any more).
     Done. --ColinFine (talk) 15:51, 23 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    Ellipses

The Wiki Help on ellipses seems to hover between recommending "(...)" and plain " ... ", as far as I can make out. Are both permitted? And what about "[...]", which I have sometimes seen? --P123ct1 (talk) 16:50, 23 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

WP:ELLIPSES does not call for "(...)" at all. I think you are mistaking the parenthetical use of brackets for a prescription to apply brackets. I believe that some style guides call for square brackets if the material removed spans more than one passage (e.g. whole paragraphs, or even chapters have been spanned). However, our guidelines say use square brackets only when the quoted text itself already contains three consecutive periods. SpinningSpark 18:38, 23 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I was taking the round brackets too literally. I take what you say about square brackets is a translation of: "Square brackets, however, may optionally be used for precision, to make it clear that the ellipsis is not itself quoted; this is usually only necessary if the quoted passage also uses three periods in it to indicate a pause or suspension." --P123ct1 (talk) 19:07, 23 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
