Welcome!

Hello, Eagleash, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Unfortunately, one or more of your edits to the page Kevin Phillips (footballer) have not conformed to Wikipedia's verifiability policy, and may be removed if they have not yet been. Wikipedia articles should refer only to facts and interpretations that have been stated in print or on reputable websites or other forms of media. Always remember to provide a reliable source for quotations and for any material that is likely to be challenged, or it may be removed. Thank you. I was actually already aware of that. I did not get to reference to the CPFC website until after the entries were removed & have never got around to re-posting as several other amendments/developments have take place in the meantime.Eagleash (talk) 14:49, 13 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Andrew Johnson (English footballer)

On the Andrew Johnson (English footballer) page, I linked his responsibility for coaching academy players to the Wiki page Youth system. But the link has been removed by another editor, using only an IP address (so am not certain whether creating a talk page for them is correct) & stating 'removed explanation of academy, Wiki is not a dictionary' (paraphrased). I was under the impression that it was a good idea to link articles to other relevant Wiki pages.... Eagleash (talk) 02:09, 4 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Eagleash, I agree that your link was decent. I (a sports idiot) would not know what "academy" meant in this context had you not provided a wikilink. Now typically we try to keep duplicate wikilinks to a minimum (please see WP:OVERLINK) but I don't have a problem with it here. The lead section is expected to summarize the content in the body, so it is not typically a problem to have a wikilink in the lead that is repeated in the infobox, the body, or in each unique table. I don't think your edit contravenes WP:OVERLINK. Hope that helps! Cyphoidbomb (talk) 02:26, 4 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Cyphoidbomb; Thank you for your help & for reverting the edit by IP whatever..... It did seem a little heavy handed to me, but I'm still quite new to this & easily confused :). But my own self made rule is to leave others work alone unless there's a glaring error of some sort, it shouldn't be a competition really. Also for the reason stated logic would indicate both links should be deleted.Eagleash (talk) 03:00, 4 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
No probs! I don't think their edit was adequately explained. Maybe the next time they revert they'll be better able to express themselves. :) Cyphoidbomb (talk) 03:45, 4 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Taylor and Summersby

Regarding Taylor, there is no need for any admin intervention, I have simply removed the mention of Cringlewood as not supported by any reliable sources. You are completely free to challenge and remove comments which are not supported by reliable sources.

Regarding Summersby, that is completely fine. He is notable as he made 275 appearances in the Football League. You do not have to create a 'complete' article, creating a basic 'stub' simply means that others can help with research, expansion, and improvement of the article. GiantSnowman 06:59, 6 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Certainly; don't be afraid to be bold and make 'big' edits like that. GiantSnowman 07:56, 6 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Recently created this article & would like to remove the word "(footballer)" from the title as it is superfluous & only appeared as I "followed" a similar article. Cannot see how to do this. Is it possible, or is it now irrevocable? Thanks.Eagleash (talk) 10:54, 29 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

ISBNs lacking in article

I have twice tried asking this Q. at the Teahouse but neither attempt was added to the list for discussion! Stumbled upon an article (Eoin Young) which is tagged as lacking ISBNs. A short search reveals these to be available on publisher's or seller's websites, for example here. This seems such a simple fix that it leads me to wonder if it is acceptable? Refs could be added if thought necessary but sites might change & not link correctly after a while. Thanks. Eagleash (talk) 15:22, 10 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The ISBNs and other directory-type data wouldn't need sourcing; as nothing should be sourced to an involved commercial site anyway, its fine just to add them, though you could give the site you got them from in your edit summary. 108.85.34.57 (talk) 15:37, 10 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, that's fine. Eagleash (talk) 13:09, 6 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
First of all, I stumbled across the page at about 6 in the morning and found a couple of things (a misspelling and a couple of erroneous commas), so I tagged it so that, if I forgot about it or didn't manage to get to it, someone else would. As it stands I have gone through it again and correct a few tiny mistakes. If there are any concerns about the edits I have made, please feel free to let me know, and I will be happy to discuss them. --Skamecrazy123 (talk) 00:08, 7 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hello again. Thanks for responding, & also for efforts to improve the page. I'm afraid that there are a couple of things. I've seen a number of edits where the wording has been amended from "a retired English (insert bio-type)" to "an English retired etc" (I will admit to having done this myself too!)....the point being that the subject is still English but retired from (in this case) football. (With even comment that "whoever" "is still English" being made in the edit summary). Fulfill with a double "L" is US English not the proper (UK) version :P. As the subject is English (& so am I) it should be single "L". Brackets & commas are also moot but won't grumble about that. It is also I believe an Americanism to say "was given" with regard to shirts etc. UK might say "was given squad No. X" now players keep a number all season, but not when it comes to shirt numbers 50 years ago. Sorry, don't mean to cause offence. Regards. Eagleash (talk) 00:43, 7 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
No offence caused at all. I've been on hiatus for a few months and need to ease myself back into things. I appreciate you pointing them out. -Skamecrazy123 (talk) 00:49, 7 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Formula One cars

Hi Eagleash. FYI, it's not necessary to put articles into Category:Formula One cars if they are already in one of the sub-categories, e.g. Lotus 72 does not need to go into Category:Formula One cars because it's already in Category:Lotus Formula One cars - see WP:SUBCAT for more information. I have reverted the addition of Category:Formula One cars to Lotus 72, Ferrari 312, Ferrari 312T and Cooper T81. Regards. DH85868993 (talk) 00:16, 11 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Right. Clear as..... Eagleash (talk) 01:20, 11 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Just created a draft article - name as section title. Unfortunately when I started it, I somehow did not go through the article wizard, as I have done before and thinking I was saving a draft, accidentally created an entry in the article space. I then moved it into draft (creating a re-direct) & am now in a position to move it back into main article space. My concern is how to fix any re-direct problems? Secondly there is already an article Peter Johnson (footballer) (different player) and I was wondering when (or if) it would be appropriate to move this other article to incorporate the year of birth in the title. Thanks. Eagleash (talk) 15:41, 18 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I have deleted the redirect to clear the way for a move, but in fact "Peter Johnson (footballer born 1954)", with the birth date within the brackets, would be the usual style. You could use WP:HATNOTEs to link the articles and prevent confusion. JohnCD (talk) 16:25, 18 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hello JohnCD, thanks for your help and advice. I can change the name when I move into article space. I haven't used "hatnotes" before so will have to swot up on that!! But there's always help available (from such as your good-self) when I mess up. Thanks again. Regards. Eagleash (talk) 16:33, 18 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, DPL bot; Thanks but, yes I did intend to point to disambiguation pages for Peter Johnson in the hatnotes on the 2 footballer pages. It does direct people to others of the same name if they land on the wrong page. The article for Peter Johnson (footballer born 1954) is not yet reviewed. When it is I will raise the issue with the reviewer & it will corrected if necessary. Thanks again. Regards, Eagleash (talk) 12:50, 19 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Fixed on review by patroller; hatnote amended & other page moved, which was what I thought should happen in the first place.:P (See section above).

Web citations

When writing citations to a web page, what should go in the field "archiveURL"? (The examples I've seen have a different URL to the actual web page.)

Thanks. Eagleash (talk) 23:25, 28 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

That field is meant for web pages that have been archived by something like the Wayback Machine; it's used either pre-emptively for pages that are likely to vanish, or to recover web pages that have been deleted already. When the page that's linked to is live, use of archiveurl is optional. Huon (talk) 23:41, 28 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

See WT:FOOTY#Captaining non-league teams for more info, and feel free to join the discussion. In short, I don't believe that captaining a non-league team is a claim to notability, plus there must have been probably well over a hundred (almost entirely non-notable) players who have captained a club like Tonbridge down the years and would be eligible for inclusion based on that criterion............ -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 17:10, 28 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Flags for F1 drivers

At the moment, after long discussions, there is no consensus that WP:INFOBOXFLAG applies to F1 drivers. The concept of sporting nationality was widely debated, but the upshot was that there's no agreement to remove flags from F1 infoboxes. Some other sports (tennis, golf) are in a similar situation. One point is that there was no real support for flags in articles about drivers who do/did not compete in F1, i.e. lower formulae drivers should probably not have flags. Cheers, Bretonbanquet (talk) 11:35, 8 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Cool, I guess not everyone would have seen those discussions. Good work lately, by the way, I've seen some great additions and expansions recently. Cheers, Bretonbanquet (talk) 12:26, 8 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Haha, rest assured, many pairs of eyes are watching! Certainly with regard to F1 articles, if people don't go in and edit your work or revert you, that's a sign that people have seen it and liked it :) Bretonbanquet (talk) 13:06, 8 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Your edits to Derek Minter

ThanQ for your contributions. I noticed that you have added BSN as a citation for Derek's death. Three uncited additions were made before any news sources were available, which eventually generated the Dutch source; I specifically avoided BSN when it came on as I believe they scraped most of the content from Wikipedia, most of which I wrote. A lot of internet sources are unregulated, ie. not under the auspices of an independent publisher, so Wikipedia content ends up being cited on...Wikipedia. It's called circular. Often it's a good thing to cross-source where possible.

It was an awkward time with the New Year period and not much happening. No harm done - I could have cited the Facebook page, but would have preferred BBC or a daily 'paper and I've not looked for a couple of days. If you've not seen it, there are some nice pics at the Facebook page 'The Mint'. I'd still like a date for renaming the straight if you ever notice one. rgds.--Rocknrollmancer (talk) 16:14, 9 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Wikitalics Project?

Nope, it's not a Project, it's a personal Thing for me. ;p I remove italics for anything that isn't obviously in need of emphasis, like (in that case) the fact it's SOHC or not. I reserve italics for book titles and ship names (it appears WP uses ital for movies, but I don't; I was taught to use quotes, but it appears that standard has changed). If you're inclined to the same thinking, welcome aboard. :D TREKphiler any time you're ready, Uhura 16:07, 10 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Organized F1 work

Hey Eagleash! It seems like the two of us are quite similar. I have been editing Wikipedia, F1-related stuff in particular, for quite some time and more broadly since the beginning of the year. I would like to start working through the articles concerning F1 more organized, maybe splitting up work between a couple of people and then making copyedit-runs of whatever the others have been doing. But that is a BT6, not a BT7. Apparently, the book by Alan Henry from 1985 talks about the Repco sponsorship deal. Can someone check in there? Cause in the Brabham article it only states the name Repco-Brabham for 1966 to 1968. Zwerg Nase (talk) 11:14, 28 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Draft: re directs

A few hours ago I began a page for George Clarke by clicking on the red link in the disambiguation page. I wrote just one sentence intending to save & work on it later, saved it, moved it to "draft" and then moved it again to footballer born 1901 as the DoB was incorrect. I also corrected the red link at the disamb page which was by then "blue". Now the various re-directs have got into a muddle. The Draft, footballer 1900 page contains my sole sentence, but was earlier tagged for deletion "not a draft", but now seems to have reverted to "normal" draft status, and the 1901 page merely re-directs to the 1900 page as far as I can see. Obviously made some basic error here. Thanks. Eagleash (talk) 11:52, 26 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Update, the Draft 1901 page seems now to be deleted leaving the 1900 page in draft form as I originally saved it. Probably best to complete the draft on the existing page and correct the DoB (move) once in article space. Eagleash (talk) 13:02, 26 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure what your question here actually is, but the admins seem to have sorted everything out. Primefac (talk) 13:04, 26 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, yes up to a point, the various pages have been restored to my original draft, which has the wrong DoB in the title. Q. now is whether to move it again to 'draft 1901' now or wait until created and move then. Eagleash (talk) 13:18, 26 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Just created this article, initially just as "Harry McDonald". Before starting it, I checked and could find no other article in the same name, on Wiki. However on moving from draft into mainspace, on checking "what links here" from the tools on the left, I found listed a number of well known American athletes. I checked some of the articles but couldn't find the link but to be on the safe side, so to speak, I moved the article again to the name as it stands now. However, the list of links from the various athletes still appears after clicking "what links here". I'm a bit confused by this. Thanks. Eagleash (talk) 23:02, 17 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Eagleash. The links still appear because the page Harry McDonald (with nothing after it) is currently a Redirect to Harry McDonald (footballer, born 1926). To fix the issue, I'd suggest going to the the redirect page directly and editing it to turn it into a disambiguation page that distinguishes between the various Harry McDonalds. Hope this helps! Very good question, and an unusual scenario which I have never seen in over 9 years of editing, and to which I'm afraid I don't have an answer. I'll re-raise at WP:BLPN; in the meantime have you considered contact CPFC to let them know and see if they can verify/publish a piece on their website? GiantSnowman 12:32, 2 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

(@GiantSnowman:) I've spent a good bit of time on this (as I don't like to be beaten...) but nothing in the records. I have, however, traced the Facebook pages of Danny's widow [3] and brother [4]. They contain tributes, a period image in strip, references to funeral service, an image of a Dartford programme with a tribute, messages of condolence, etc so there's no doubt. Facebook can be used as a source where it's unequivocal (uncontroversial) - the exact date, 20 Oct is not supported except in the supporters' site used as reference #1 on Danny's WP article, but the programme was uploaded 25 Oct. Danny married Laura in 1981, Camberwell (they appear to have lived in London recently, but I couldn't get an address). He's the rather portly, suntanned gent on the cover photo of Laura's page. You'll need a logged-in Facebook presence to view the content. As you opined, Eagleash, it's better to have the page accurate. I used social media to update Leon Haslam's page for a child's birth when there was no other news or records source, and to confirm Frank Perris' death by way of funeral arrangements posted to Facebook with accommodation and parking tips, although someone had already added the death-date from a foreign-language semi-blog. Hope this helps.--Rocknrollmancer (talk) 22:14, 3 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
If there is a tribute/obituary in a football club's official matchday programme then that should be sufficient. GiantSnowman 22:37, 3 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Date of death also confirmed by this. GiantSnowman 22:39, 3 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@GiantSnowman: & @Rocknrollmancer:. Great stuff. Thanks. I think the Colchester website is the one to go with. I have searched many times for a ref. but that one never came up! Thanks again both. Eagleash (talk) 22:55, 3 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Always a pleasure.--Rocknrollmancer (talk) 23:21, 3 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I can upload the image from the Facebook pages under a fair use rationale for the infobox, if you think that's appropriate - certainly a good action capture and indicative of his time in the game. I ran it through the Google image search and it was only used at this fansite page, 3 Nov, pre-dating the Facebook useage.--Rocknrollmancer (talk) 00:43, 4 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
There is no need to 'prove' an offline source through a photograph, it can be adequately cited using {{cite book}} or {{cite journal}} - though it would be helpful if you could provide details such as page number, edition etc. GiantSnowman 08:46, 4 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@GiantSnowman: & @Rocknrollmancer: I think I'm a little confused here now :P. I think Rocknrollmancer is referring to a shot of Light in late '60s CPFC strip which could be used as infobox image (?). I am no good at image use criteria — I've only ever used images of my own uploaded via Commons — so don't feel able to comment on whether it's appropriate or not, really. Sorry. — It would make a decent i/bx image though.

Whilst 'here' could one of you have a look at the message, below this one, from MAbbey regarding his re-write of the CB400T article (one for Rockandrollmancer possibly). I think the re-write is an improvement on the existing page but like him I'm unsure of the best way to go about inputting it. The obvious way is to clear the page and just copy & paste, but not sure if that would contravene any procedures. Maybe a bit too 'bold'. Thanks. Eagleash (talk) 09:03, 4 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sure Dennis Bratland will have the Honda CB400T article flagged and will be able to advise when time allows.--Rocknrollmancer (talk) 10:28, 4 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Rocknrollmancer: Yes I expect he does... However, Snowman seems to have answered the question and the page has now been updated! Eagleash (talk) 11:24, 4 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Ah sorry, I've re-read the above and I was mistaken - I'm also not 100% on image rights, I'll let Rocknrollmancer make that call... GiantSnowman 09:33, 4 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
A.S.H. the stripey-strip pic I have already formatted last night, but just didn't want to go ahead on 'your' page...Under a 'fair use rationale' several criteria must be met, the main one being that the person is deceased. Another being low resolution and small physical size (maximum pixel size of 110,000, so 250px x 400px = 100,000) to prevent any high-quality copies being made; the image can only be uploaded to Wikipedia, and used on the Wikipedia (en) page for the particular article and remains linked to it, i.e., it cannot be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons (and re-used from there by anyone, for any purpose, as is 'normal'). If you look at this File:Tom Phillis on BSA Gold Star.JPG, I used the image of Tom Phillis as a dummy for sizing (put it in the Danny Light infobox as a draft try), but the Danny Light image would be narrower (the infobox re-sizes it, and/or manually). I'm sure that's confused you enough! When I queried if it was appropriate, I meant appropriately-indicative of his playing career, not of later in life. Regarding the hypothetical case where an image of a publication is uploaded to a blog or similar, then we cannot inline-citation directly link to it as an info source as it violates some [[WP:***}} copyright aspect, can remember the exact one! --Rocknrollmancer (talk) 10:11, 4 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Rocknrollmancer: I think it's a good image for Light's page. Better than the one of him seen in various locations in the earlier all-white 'Real Madrid tribute' strip. Palace fans will appreciate the 'old' Holmesdale Terrace in the background too! Eagleash (talk) 10:33, 4 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Roger, WilCo...I've re-formatted it to show more terracing than the earlier version I prepared - I couldn't have anticipated this aspect, but that's why I wanted your opinion. I'll put a caption on and you can tweak it as required. Laters.--Rocknrollmancer (talk) 15:25, 4 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
 Done--Rocknrollmancer (talk) 19:35, 4 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Rocknrollmancer: Great!! Thanks. Eagleash (talk) 19:44, 4 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Advice needed

Hello Eagleash, I hope you don't mind but as you were so helpful with the on the Super Dream article is was wondering if I could ask for your help? I have been drafting a total rewrite of the CB400T article in my sandbox and it is about as complete as I feel I can take it. My question to you is what to do next regarding putting it up? I am unsure on the etiquette in this situation and I didn't want to just put it up there without asking an experienced Wikipedian first. Thank you! MAbbey (talk) 04:32, 4 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @MAbbey: - my first suggestion would have been to merge the existing article with your sandbox, but I see your sandbox has a long history with multiple topics covered. Therefore I suggest you simply copy and paste the content from your sandbox into the existing article, and use an edit summary along the lines of "re-writing article, content moved from my sandbox" - please give me a shout if you need any more help. GiantSnowman 09:36, 4 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi and thank you @GiantSnowman:. I have copied and pasted the rewritten article from my sandbox. I'll leave a message on the talk page as well. Once again thank you for taking the time to help. MAbbey (talk) 10:25, 4 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Jimmy Greaves

Not enough recent disruption to justify protection (yet), but I've added to my watchlist and will monitor. GiantSnowman 11:44, 4 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

David Lindsay (footballer) / CPFC

Regarding David Lindsay, yes the redirect was meant to be back to the disambigaution page - we have David Lindsay (English footballer) and David Lindsay (Scottish footballer). As for CPFC I have reverted the other user, I cannot see any merit in their deletion of referenced content. GiantSnowman 16:42, 7 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

CB125T

Hi, I stumbled upon your draft for the CB125T. I have put the dimensions in, I hope you don't mind. I have a little bit of research on this model. I was going to have a go at this model a little while ago but the internet seems a bit short on decent references on it. Mostly it's just original research on fan sites. I have a copy of a brochure with the usual stats. I does have the claimed bhp and torque as well but alas we know the score on that (it had 17 bhp or 12 bhp in the UK btw) :) Let me know if you want to work in peace and quiet, I won't be offended MAbbey (talk) 19:25, 23 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

T Bone

Gooday A.S.H. - just to confirm that I am still on the cae of the CD175 and will start to clean-up the content soon, but need to do a bit more research on the difference between the pressed steel frame and tubular (gearbox mountings at the crankcases and CB160). I have started very superficially to look at Underbone which I imagine will take a long time to trawl-through, due to my scepticism. On that note, when researching other stuff I have also been conscious of 1960s usage of 'step-through' and found two references to Mokick, of which I was not aware, even though the mags themselves have been in the house for 50 years (same house). One is in the prose, the other in a Suzuki GB advert "Suzuki Suzy Mokick". It Google-tranlates from the German as meaning a moped with a kick-start, [5], hence an early type of noped? There is a wiki-redirect from 2011, Mokick to Scooter (motorcycle). Rgds,--Rocknrollmancer (talk) 22:55, 26 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Pitchero

As far as I was aware, Pitchero is a web-hosting tool used by lower-non-league clubs wanting to get a cheap official website up, so if it's a club's own site on Pitchero then I'd say treat it as you would any other club's proper website. GiantSnowman 08:45, 8 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Commer vans

The unlamented FC was kept in production for BT long after it should have been replaced (also the Morris Ital van). They were badged as Commers until very late. The final change was the same one (1979?) that caused Ford to make the Cortina Mk IV into the Cortina Mk V - European rules that indicators needed to be visible from the sides, not just ahead. This caused a very minor redesign, a new plastic grille with new wrap-around lights and a Dodge badge with the new pentagon logo, the branding change shared between the Talbot T on cars and the Dodge pentagon on vans and trucks.

There were, incidentally, the worst light vans ever made. Narrower front track than rear and a front axle behind the driver's arse. Impossible to parallel park or to reverse around a corner, especially in a small telephone exchange yard. Hateful things.

Also note that a lot of the crossover with Dodge light trucks involved Renault too. Look at European military one tonners. Andy Dingley (talk) 21:52, 10 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
