Bae Su-ji (Korean배수지; born October 10, 1994), commonly known by her stage name Suzy, is a South Korean singer and actress. She was number 11 for the 100 most beautiful fave for 2012. She is best known for her roles as Go Hye-mi in the KBS2 TV series' Dream High, Jang Ma-ri in Big, young Yang Seo-yeon in the movie Architecture 101, and Dam Yeo-wool in the MBC TV series Gu Family Book. She is a member of the girl group miss A, under JYP Entertainment.

Early life

Suzy was born in Gwangju, South Korea on October 10, 1994,[2] to Bae Wan-young and Jeong Hyun-sook; she has an older sister, Su-bin, and a younger brother, Sang-moon.[3] She attended Seoul Performing Arts High School.[3] Before debuting, she was an online shopping model.[4] In 2009, she auditioned for Mnet Superstar K and made it through the preliminary round but she was ultimately eliminated. However, she caught the attention of a scout from JYP Entertainment and soon became a trainee.[5] After training for a year, she was paired with fellow members Fei and Jia. After the addition of Min into the group, the four of them prepared to debut as miss A.

Career

miss A

In March 2010, Suzy joined fellow members Fei, and Jia to form the group miss A. The trio began their first official promotional activities in China as a group by signing up with the Samsung Electronics group in China. The group released a song used for the commercial called "Love Again" for the Samsung Beat Festival. The song was written by Korean composer Super Changddai, and the music video was directed by Hong Won Ki.[6][7] The group was later joined by a fourth member, Min. The four piece girl group eventually made their debut in July 2010 through JYP Entertainment, with the single "Bad Girl Good Girl"[8] After a successful promotion period of seven weeks, the group came back in October with a new title track, "Breathe", from the second single Step Up. They promoted the song for a month and had their last goodbye stage on November 7. The group then returned in July 2011 with the release of their first full-length studio album A Class with the title track "Good Bye Baby". The group held their goodbye stage in early September after finding great success with their album and title track. They then turned their focus towards their overseas activities, including their Chinese debut. In February 2012, they came back with their new style of music through Touch. In the later quarter of the year 2012, they released Independent Women Pt.III. The album was designed to pay homage to the song "Independent Women" by Destiny's Child, the group's idol. On November 6, 2013, miss A made their comeback after more than a year with a second full-length studio album Hush. The title track was composed by famous composer duo, E-Tribe.

2010-present: Solo activities and rising popularity

In October 2010, Suzy became the host for MBC Show! Music Core alongside Minho and Onew, both from SHINee, and Jiyeon, from T-ara.[9] Suzy later hosted other shows such as Inkigayo, M! Countdown, M! Countdown Hello Japan,[10][11] the 21st Seoul Music Awards, 26th Golden Disk Awards with F.T. Island's Hongki, and Mnet 20's Choice Awards alongside the actor Song Joong-ki[12] where she won an award under the category "hot new star of 2011".[13] Since then, Suzy continues to host many events from music shows up to major award ceremonies.

Apart from her group activities, Suzy made her acting debut as the main female character Go Hye-mi with the drama Dream High, which aired on KBS2 from January 3 to February 28.[14][15] The drama proved to be a success maintaining first in its Mon-Tue drama time slot. It also gained popularity in other countries and won several international awards.[16][17]

In October 2011, Suzy became a cast member in KBS2 TV reality show Invincible Youth 2 (청춘불패) in which Suzy was a part of G8, consisting of eight girls from idol groups as Girls' Generation's Sunny and Hyoyeon, Kara's Jiyoung, f(x)'s Amber, SISTAR's Bora, Rainbow's Woori and Jewelry's Yewon. The show began filming its first episode on October 19 and aired on November 11.[18] On November 4, 2011, it revealed that Suzy will make a surprise appearance in the new music video titled Pretty but Hateful of former g.o.d's member Son Ho-young. Suzy played the role of the main female character and captivated the audience with her natural beauty and innocent charm. She left a strong impression by being able to cry on demand in the beginning of the MV.[19]

On March 22, 2012, she made her movie debut in the film Introduction to Architecture as young Seo yeon.[20][21][22] Her debut film, Architecture 101, was one of the ten most-watched films in Korea in the first quarter of 2012. Nine weeks after its theater release, it reached over 4.1 million admissions, a new box office record for Korean melodramas. She made a lasting impression with her natural acting and charm; thus, ultimately hailed as Korea's Icon of First Love.[23] On June 4, 2012, Suzy took a supporting role in the Hong Sisters drama Big alongside Gong Yoo and Lee Min-jung as the crazy but beautiful Jang Mari.

Her new movie The Sound of a Flower premiered on November 25, 2015.

On August 19, 2015, Suzy was cast as No Eul in an upcoming drama "Uncontrollably Fond" with Kim Woo-bin in 2016. This will be her comeback drama since Gu Family Book in 2013.[29] In January, 2016, Suzy released a digital single titled "Dream" with EXO's Baekhyun. The song topped all the major charts.
