Blackpink (Hangul: 블랙핑크; stylized as BLACKPINK or BLΛƆKPIИK) is a South Korean girl group formed by YG Entertainment, consisting of members Jisoo, Jennie, Lisa, and Rosé.

The group debuted on August 8, 2016, with their single album Square One, which spawned "Whistle", their first number-one song in South Korea,[1] as well as "Boombayah", their first number-one hit on the Billboard World Digital Songs chart, which set the record as the most-viewed debut music video by a Korean act. With the group's early commercial success, they were hailed as the New Artist of the Year at the 31st Golden Disc Awards and the 26th Seoul Music Awards.[citation needed]

As of 2018, Blackpink is the highest-charting female K-pop act on both Billboard Hot 100 and Billboard 200, peaking at number 55 with "Ddu-Du Ddu-Du",[2] and peaking at number 40 with Square Up, respectively.[3] They are also the first and only K-pop girl group to enter and top Billboard's Emerging Artists chart.[2] They are also the first female K-pop group to have four number-one singles on Billboard's World Digital Song Sales chart.[4][2] At the time of its release, "Ddu-Du Ddu-Du" was the most-viewed music video in 24 hours on YouTube,[5] and in January 2019, it became the most viewed music video by a K-pop group on the website.[6][7][8]

History

2016: Debut with Square One and Square Two

Promotional preparations began in August 2016 with the release of teaser images and their participation in songs and advertisements.[9][10] YG Entertainment revealed the final line-up and name of the group on June 29, 2016.[11][12]

Blackpink was the first girl group to debut under YG Entertainment in six years after 2NE1,[13] with their debut single album Square One, which was released on August 8, 2016.[13][14] The two lead singles charted at number one and two on the Billboard World Digital Songs chart, and Blackpink is the fastest act to do so and the third Korean artist or group to hold the top two positions after label mates Psy and Big Bang.[15] "Whistle" topped the digital, download, streaming, and mobile charts on Gaon in August 2016.[16] They also reached number one on the weekly, popularity, music video, and K-pop music video charts of China's biggest music-streaming website QQ Music.[17] Blackpink's first music show performance was aired on August 14, 2016 on SBS' Inkigayo.[18] They won first place on Inkigayo 13 days after their debut, and broke the record for the shortest time for a girl group to win on a music program after their debut. They wrapped up their promotions for Square One on September 11, 2016 with another win on Inkigayo.

Blackpink released their second single album Square Two with the lead singles "Playing with Fire" and "Stay" on November 1, 2016. The songs were produced by Teddy Park with R.Tee and Seo Won Jin. They performed their comeback stage on Inkigayo on November 6 and on Mnet's M Countdown on November 10, 2016.[19] "Playing with Fire" was their second single to hit number one on the Billboard World Digital Songs chart.[20] In South Korea, "Playing with Fire" peaked at number three while "Stay" managed to reach the tenth spot.[21]

Blackpink's commercial success in their first five months earned them several rookie awards at major Korean year-end music award shows, including the Asia Artist Awards,[22] Melon Music Awards,[23] Golden Disc Awards,[24] Seoul Music Awards,[25] and Gaon Chart Music Awards.[26] Additionally, Billboard named them one of the best new K-pop groups of 2016.[27]

2017: "As If It's Your Last" and Japanese debut

On January 17, Blackpink named their fan club "Blink", a portmanteau of "Black" and "Pink".[28]

On June 22, The group released a digital single titled "As If It's Your Last". The song was described as a "mixed genre of music, a change of sound from their previous releases.[29] The song debuted at number one on Billboard's World Digital Song chart dated June 22 after only one day of tracking, making it their third number one hit on the chart.[30] The music video for the song later went on to break the record for the most liked music video by a Korean girl group on YouTube.[31]

On July 20, 2017, Blackpink held a showcase at Nippon Budokan in Tokyo. It had an attendance of more than 14,000 people and it was reported that around 200,000 people tried to get tickets for it.[32][33]

The group made their Japanese debut on August 30, 2017, with the release of their self-titled Japanese extended play.[34][35]

Blackpink was ranked among YouTube's Global Top 25 Songs of the Summer for 2017, with their single "As If It's Your Last".[36]

2018–present: Square Up, international recognition and touring

In January 2018, it was announced that the debut Japanese EP of the group would be re-released under the name Re:Blackpink. The digital version included the same songs as the original release, while the physical version included a DVD containing all music videos and six songs in the Korean language.[37]

On June 15, the group released their first EP titled Square Up.[38] The single "Ddu-Du Ddu-Du" from the EP debuted at number 17 on the Official Trending Chart in the United Kingdom, making them the first female K-pop group to enter the chart since its launch in 2016.[39] The single also debuted as the highest-charting Hot 100 hit ever by an all-female K-pop act, opening at number 55 with 12.4 million U.S. streams and 7,000 downloads in the tracking week ending June 21, 2018.[2] The single also debuted at number 39 on the US Streaming Songs tally, where Blackpink became the first K-pop girl group to chart a title.[2] Square Up also brought the group their first entry and the highest-charting to date (2018) by an all-female K-pop group on the US Billboard 200, debuting at number 40 with 14,000 album-equivalent units, surpassing label mate 2NE1's 2014 record with their last album Crush which peaked at number 61.[40] The EP also topped the Billboard World Albums chart.[2] In South Korea, Square Up debuted at number one on Gaon Albums Chart.[41] The single "Ddu-Du Ddu-Du" peaked at number one on the Digital, Download, Streaming and Mobile charts on Gaon in its second week, while "Forever Young" managed to peak under top five.[42][43][44][45] YouTube's official tally saw the music video for "Ddu-Du Ddu-Du" garner a total of 36.2 million views within 24 hours after its release and became the most viewed online video in the first 24 hours by a Korean act and second most watched music video of all time as at June 2018, surpassing label-mate Psy's "Gentleman".[46]

On July 7, the final stop of the tour was added for December 24 at Kyocera Dome Osaka as a Christmas gift to their fans, which made them the first overseas girl-group to perform at a domed stadium in Japan.[47] They embarked on their first Japan tour, Blackpink Arena Tour 2018, in Osaka on July 24–25.[48] On September 12, it was announced that the group would hold their first ever concert in Seoul titled "Black Pink 2018 Tour [In Your Area] Seoul x BC Card" at Olympic Gymnastics Arena.[49]

In September 2018, English singer Dua Lipa announced "Kiss and Make Up", a collaboration with Blackpink for the re-released Complete Edition of her self-titled debut album in October 19, 2018.[50] "Kiss and Make Up" debuted at number 93 at the Billboard Hot 100, marking the Blackpink's second entry in the chart, making them the only Korean girl group as at October 2018 to score multiple entries on the chart.[51] The song also peaked at number 36 at the UK Singles Chart, marking their second song in the chart and their first Top 40 entry, making them the first female K-pop group and third Korean act overall to reach the chart's Top 40.[52]

In October 2018, YG CEO Yang Hyun-suk announced that each Blackpink member will have solo projects, with Jennie to debut first and Rosé to follow suit.[53] That same month, the group signed with Interscope Records for a global partnership with YG Entertainment; they will be represented by Interscope and Universal Music Group outside of Asia.[54] In November 2018, Blackpink announced additional tour dates for their In Your Area World Tour, which covers thirteen dates around Asia from January through March 2019.[55]

Jennie debuted her solo single, "Solo", at Blackpink's Seoul concert on November 11; the song and its official music video was released the following day.[56] Their first Japanese studio album, Blackpink in Your Area, was made available digitally on November 23, and physically on December 5.[57] The album debuted at no. 9 on the Japanese album chart, selling about 13,000 copies in its first week.[58]

In January 2019, the group was announced to be part of the lineup of the 2019 Coachella Festival in California on April 12 and 19, 2019. They will be the first female K-pop group to perform at Coachella.[59] That same month, YG Entertainment announced that Blackpink's In Your Area World Tour will have tour dates in North America, Europe and Australia,[60] with the North American leg spanning six dates on April and May 2019 and the European leg spanning five dates on May 2019.[61][62] On January 21, 2019, the music video of "Ddu-du Ddu-du" became the most-viewed music video by a K-pop group on YouTube, with 620.9 million views.[8]

Blackpink made their American debut at Universal Music Group's 2019 Grammy Artist Showcase, which was invite-only and took place at ROW in Downtown Los Angeles on February 9.[63] The group is slated to appear in several American television shows in February 2019, with The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on February 11,[64][65] Good Morning America on February 12,[66] and Strahan and Sara on February 15.[65]

In February 2019, it was announced that the group will be part of the lineup of the 2019 Summer Sonic Festival in Japan on August 17 and 18, 2019. Korean acts such as Seo Taiji, Girls’ Generation, FTISLAND, Epik High, and BoA have previously performed at the festival. [67]

Endorsements

In May 2017, Blackpink became ambassadors for Incheon Main Customs.[68][69] The group has endorsed and collaborated with several high-end brands including Puma,[70] Reebok,[71] Louis Vuitton,[72] Dior Cosmetics,[73] Moonshot,[74] St. Scott London,[75] Shibuya 109,[76] Tokyo Girls Collection x CECIL McBEE[77] and Sprite Korea.[78]

In July 28, 2018 the group ranked first for brand reputation based on analysis by The Korea Reputation Research Institute.[79]

In November 2018, Blackpink was announced as the first regional brand ambassador for a Singaporean e-commerce platform, Shopee. It was part of their partnership with YG Group in seven different countries; Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, and Taiwan. A YG Official Store will also be launched on Shopee across the markets in the region, offering fans access to a range of official merchandise. As the regional brand ambassador, they starred in a dedicated Shopee 12.12 Birthday Sale TV commercial in Indonesia.[80] Following this announcement, they attended and performed at a concert-style event hosted by Shopee in Sentul International Convention Center, Indonesia, on November 19. [81] This partnership had previously brought Blackpink member Lisa to a Shopee event in August 2018 in Jakarta.[82]
