Purpose?[edit]

Can anyone explain to me what the purpose is of a category "English-language films" on the English wikipedia? Wouldn't it make sense to assume by default that any movie covered on the English wikipedia is in English unless otherwise noted, and do away with this category? It's going to wind up including the vast majority of movies on the wiki... what use is it, when we already have Lists of films? Kasreyn 08:44, 16 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes it will be massive. But this will act as an index of films, just as you would find in a book of films. Strangely enough, there is no List of English-language films in Wikipedia, and there are categories for every language except English. -- Samuel Wantman 21:31, 19 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Bot to Populate?[edit]

Could someone make a bot that would check the infobox language field and then add the film to the appropriate language category? It sounds simple to me, but I can't program. --Supernumerary 03:56, 21 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Silents[edit]

I notice that recently silent films (e.g. Salomé (film)) are being added to this category. That seems a bit problematic: most major silents were made with intertitles, with different prints providing those intertitles in different languages. I was the one who added Salomé (film) because the infobox said it was in english. If it doesn't belong than feel free to remove it.--Supernumerary 03:03, 25 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
An old thread, but relevant to something I saw recently. As with release dates, it seems reasonable to go with whatever the language was for the first release, especially since that's almost always going to be the language in which both the story and the associated intertitles (which sometimes receive a separate credit) were written. That the original intertitles may then be translated into other languages seems as irrelevant as audio being dubbed into other languages.--tronvillain (talk) 19:53, 1 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The language of a film is determined not solely by the audio track. If a silent film contains signage in a particular language, then this is the language the film is in. Paradoctor (talk) 23:31, 2 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Unsure if film belongs.[edit]

Recently I wrote an article about the South African film "Lost in the Desert", which appeared in both English and Afrikaans versions. It is known as "Dirkie" in the Afrikaans version, and "Lost in the Desert" or "Dirkie Lost in the Desert" in the English, and I assume one of these is a dubbed version. I have included it in this category, but in fact I am not sure whether it was originally in Afrikaans and dubbed into English, or vice-versa. (If the latter, it should not be in this category.)

Can anyone help with this, please? Does anyone know this film and have definite information on which language was the original? If I can't find out which version was the original and which the dubbing, should I leave it here or remove it?
