MIUI (pronounced "Me You I", a play on the common abbreviation of the words user interface as UI),[1] developed by Xiaomi Tech, is a stock and aftermarket firmware for smartphones and tablet computers[2] based on the open-source Android operating system.[3] It features a heavily modified and hard-coded user interface that takes away the Android app drawer and has visual comparisons with Apple's iOS and Samsung's TouchWiz UI.[4] The Custom ROM[5] includes additional functionality not found in stock Android, including a fully theme-able user interface, new music, gallery, and camera apps, and an alarm clock that rings even if the device is turned off.[6]

Development

The original MIUI ROMs were based on Android 2.2.x Froyo and CyanogenMod 6 sources, and was initially developed in the Chinese language by Chinese startup Xiaomi Tech.[7] Xiaomi added a number of apps to enhance the basic framework; those include Notes, Backup, Music, and Gallery.[8]

Updates are usually provided over-the-air every Friday.[9] MIUI is then translated and ported into unofficial versions in other languages by independent developers and groups of fansites. The list of supported devices may or may not be complete, and ROMs are very similar but not identical. The list of fansites can be found on MIUI's official English website.[10]

Name

MIUI is made up of two parts, MI and UI, where UI stands for User Interface and MI, as stated by Xiaomi Tech, stands for Mobile Internet and Mission Impossible, reflecting the obstacles encountered in starting Xiaomi Tech.[11]

Criticisms

MIUI's kernel was closed source, and thus in breach of Linux kernel's GPL.[12][13] Due to criticisms, source code for certain components was released to GitHub on October 25, 2013.[14]

Prior to V4, MIUI has been criticized for being visually similar to iOS.[15]

Since MIUI V4, based on Android Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean, Xiaomi added a virus scanning engine from partner company Tencent (formerly from Kingsoft, whose previous CEO was also Lei Jun) despite the opposition of many users. Methods of removing it have emerged in the MIUI China forum,[16] since the engine was proven not to be helpful.[17]

Also during the development of MIUI V4, Xiaomi started to remove Google services from their ROMs in order to build and monopolize its own environment of Xiaomi, including cloud services, paid themes and games (featured by MiCredit currency).[18] Later, during development of MIUI V5, nearly all Google services were removed due to Chinese censorship laws.[19]

Devices

Xiaomi has released nine smartphones: the Xiaomi MI-One / MI-One S, the Xiaomi MI2 / Xiaomi MI2A / Xiaomi MI-2S, the Xiaomi Redmi / Xiaomi Redmi 1S, and the Xiaomi MI3 / Xiaomi Mi3S, all of which come pre-installed with MIUI.[20]
