Organization

[edit]

People should be listed by era in which they acted, not when they were born. If not then at least find a better way to organize them as by birth date is confusing and somewhat irrelevent. If you're going to stick with this particular categorial method then at least headline it like, "born in the 1980's" rather then "1980s" which confused me right off.

It is easier to find people based on their birth year, which is easy to find out, rather than when they began acting, which is less well known. I agree with clarifying the sections by listing the sections as Born in the 1990s etc. WP improver (talk) 20:51, 14 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Italian?

[edit]

I think there should be rules to who is actually "Italian". Just because someone has some Italian heritage, does that make them eligible to be categorized as "Italian"? If someone is of German, Irish and Italian heritage, I'd say they're just as much German, or Irish as they are Italian. Therefore is it meaningful to categorize them as one or the other? I guess... but only if the German, and Irish people are doing it as well. ^_^ hehe which apparently they are. So be it.

People who need sources

[edit]

The following people need sources that actually say they are Italian Americans or Italian. Not sources that say they had an Italian grandmother, descent, etc. Per Wikipedia:No original research and this page's title (some of these may be Sicilian-Americans and therefore should be on the Sic-American page):

  • if they're sicilian they're anyway italian, Sicily is part of Italy and there isn't a simple source where there is written it's an indipendent country... do you see Sicily at United Nations? At Olympic Games? At a World Cup? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.140.17.100 (talk) 14:36, 23 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

He's listed... Mad Jack 19:11, 30 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Overlisting

[edit]

Is this list a notable intersection? It may be nice trivia to know these people are Italian-Americans but why create an intersection when List of Italian-Americans pretty much makes the exact same statement? I'll ask here just in case I'm missing something, otherwise I think AFD should be considered. Bulldog123 14:28, 24 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Half-Italian ancestry?

[edit]

If persons of half-Italian ancestry are included (i.e., Jan Leno, John Travolta) why do examples with Italian surnames dominate? Aren't actors with Italian mothers just as "half-Italian?" Why the strong nod to paternal descent? --Giacomo57 09:22, 11 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

if the actor hasn't an italian name it becomes harder imagine he's italian213.140.17.100 (talk) 14:30, 23 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Why the nod to paternal descent? Because in Italy you are Italian by paternal descent first and foremost. If you do not carry an Italian surname you are not therefore paternally Italian ...and your children (if married) will carrying that non-Italian surname.

There are a few issues being tossed here. One of genetics, ethnic and religious social and religious conventions. Jewish law the mother must be Jewish. Frankly, this list is ridiculous since the half-Jewish and Mulatto members should also be on a different list specific to their heritage and background either actors of partial Jewish descent or mixed-race actors. If one is half-Jewish (or half-black) where are they solely Italian-American? They aren't. If the mother is Jewish by Jewish law would be considered Jewish. And in the black sense they would be first and foremost considered mulatto in their own community. I don't see any Caucasian Italian-American viewing them the same. This is reality and genetic reality. Solidzz (talk) 15:15, 30 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Do you have a source for your claim of being Italian only by paternal descent? If that were true, does that mean that Italian women who marry and take a non-Italian surname are not Italian anymore? What about Robert de Niro, who has an Italian surname yet is Irish, German, and British, and one-quarter Italian descent? Is he more Italian than Jason Biggs who is one-quarter English and three-quarters Italian descent? ... discospinster talk 15:32, 30 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There is no official criteria by which to include or exclude a mixed person of partial Italian descent. That paternal descent stuff is super archaic and heavily influenced by chauvinistic ideas of a woman being part of the "inferior" human races, also archaic religious traditions though even old Roman tradition wasn't so narrow and in modern Italy Oriundi qualify for full ius sanguini (blood right) citizenship if they have one Italian ancestor within the last 3 generation who never gave up their citizenship, male or female though obviously there is more to ethnicity than blood anyhow. Cultural and linguistic identity are also important. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mepersondudeman (talkcontribs) 02:28, 10 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

New List

[edit]

This is a short list of notable Italian-American actors who do not appear on the original list. All those people considered by different sources like Italian-American (ie, people who are direct descents of Italian, having a Italian father,to a close ancestor Italian, etc...) excluded from the original list on this list. Please, if you have a reliable source to accept or reject these people as Italian-Americans indicate this:

  • Austin St. John - (1975-)
  • The Jonas Brothers
  • Katie Holmes - (1978-)
  • Lea Michele - (1986)
  • Nia Peeples - (-1961)
  • Freddie Prinze Jr- (1976) (Does his mother is of English, Irish and Native American or an Italian family comes from?)
  • Julia Stiles - (1981) (Wikipedia says she's of Irish, English and German descent. I've heard it claimed on the net that some sources claim some Italian descent but have never seen the actual sources. I've never heard her claim any Italian heritage, I don't think she should be considered until it's confirmed by her or reliable source)

As far as I know, the only people mentioned there that are of any Italian heritage are the Jonas brothers, where did you get these? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mepersondudeman (talkcontribs) 02:44, 10 March 2015 (UTC) --Isinbill (talk) 21:36, 4 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

"Italian" vs "American"

[edit]

Some entries are listed as having an "Italian" parent and an "American" parent. What does this mean? Is the American parent of Native ancestry? If the ethnic background is unknown, why not just leave it out? Certainly it doesn't mean that the Italian parent is not American as well. ... discospinster talk 22:02, 20 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned references in List of Italian-American actors

[edit]

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of List of Italian-American actors's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.
