DYK for Thomas Lüscher

On 11 December 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Thomas Lüscher, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that according to Swiss cardiologist Thomas Lüscher, chocolate is good for us if it is dark and bitter, but white chocolate is "not healthy at all"? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Thomas Lüscher. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Thomas Lüscher), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Charlotte Valuer

Hello Edwardx, I was wondering if you could help me with some edits for the Charlotte Valuer page. Staying true to neutrality and objectivity; I do have a conflict of interest which is why I can’t make the edits myself. Her page doesn’t reflect her impressive career in the financial industry as well fighting for equality for all in the boardroom and wider society. She’s just set up a new charity the Institute for Neurodiversity. I noticed you edited her page last year. Take a look of what I’ve pulled together on my sandbox: [[1]] and let me know if you have capacity right now to help me edit it. Cheers! Tower of the Koutoubia Mosque

Thanks very much for creating Tower of the Koutoubia Mosque. I’ve got a bit interested in WSC’s paintings since getting hold of a copy of David Coombs’ catalogue. I’m thinking about an image for the infobox. Obviously, a picture of the picture would be much the best but we’re unlikely to get that! What do you think about an image of the mosque, or Churchill, or Marrakesh, or the Atlas Mountains? As an aside, I think there’s probably just enough reliable sources to enable a zapping of that irritating, Villa Taylor redlink. All the best. KJP1 (talk) 13:19, 20 March 2022 (UTC)

And thank you, KJP1. Yes, any of those image choices would be good. I can be a bit lazy about adding images, especially when there are labyrinthine copyright issues to negotiate. Churchill's art does merit attention. Conversely, Hitler's "art" is not interesting in itself, but for the art market, and the trade in forgeries, which boomed from 1933. Even he could not determine which were real, and in 1937 banned their sale. Did a quick search and agree that Villa Taylor merits an article, which is probably why I created the redlink... Edwardx (talk) 13:50, 20 March 2022 (UTC)
If I’d only known about Churchill’s paintings when I visited Marrakesh some 10 years ago, I’d have made my way to the Villa Taylor and taken a few photos. I can’t work out whether it’s now derelict, or run as a riad with paying guests. Google is contradictory. The King seems to have owned it at some stage. Ah well, a future trip! KJP1 (talk) 15:12, 20 March 2022 (UTC)
It qualifies for a fair use image. Philafrenzy (talk) 19:11, 20 March 2022 (UTC)
Philafrenzy - Phil, shukran! That looks absolutely fantastic. Can we make the same case to use it on Winston Churchill as painter? KJP1 (talk) 20:57, 20 March 2022 (UTC)
Thank you (wait until the bot downsamples it to a blur!) No, it's fair use so more than one use is hard to justify. Philafrenzy (talk) 21:02, 20 March 2022 (UTC)
Hitler seems like a decent architectural draughtsman based on what we have on Commons. Do you think Putin was rejected for art school too? It would explain a lot. Philafrenzy (talk) 21:24, 20 March 2022 (UTC)

Thank you for starting the above article. Just letting you know - I have 5x expanded it and nominated it for DYK, crediting you as creator, of course. I have suggested a hook, but you are very welcome to add more hooks - I am struggling for ideas. He seems to have been very involved in the West African aspect of the business, although his home appears to have been consistently in the Greater Manchester area. I'm wondering if there is anything else we could say about West Africa?

I noted the reqphoto template, and I have searched for an image of him, but with no luck so far. I suspect that the University of Toronto which holds all those Nigerian 1910 photos might have one dated before 1927, but have not yet plucked up the courage to ask them.

Cheers. Storye book (talk) 14:48, 13 April 2022 (UTC)

  • Thank you, Storye book. The co-credit is most decent of you. Not everyone is so thoughtful. We can add a later photo to the article with a "fair use" case. I agree that the hook is a tad dry. Perhaps something like "...under Constantine Zochonis, the family firm moved into soap in 1948, cleaned up, and as the "Z" in PZ Cussons are now a UK market leader?" Edwardx (talk) 23:24, 13 April 2022 (UTC)
  • Thank you for the ALT1, that's a lot better - a fresh eye makes all the difference. I have added it to the template. As for the photo, I couldn't even find an in-copyright photo, so I still don't know what he looked like. Storye book (talk) 09:29, 14 April 2022 (UTC)

I have noticed your consistent effort in regulating and clearing articles. Thank you! And good work. NiklausGerard (talk) 22:30, 15 April 2022 (UTC)
Thank you kindly, NiklausGerard. Wikipedia continues to be a target for spammers, COI and paid editors who view it as just another social media site. MER-C creates regular reports of "Suspicious new articles" at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Spam. I try to find older articles that may have been overlooked. Anyone can try to find them, for example by a simple search for articles containing two or more keywords. I just experimented with "blockchain entrepreneur" and turned up Gaius Chibueze, which was deleted in January 2020, and recreated in February 2021. I have requested a G4 speedy deletion. Not being an admin, I cannot easily determine if it is "substantially identical to the deleted version", but this is very much the sort of person who would benefit from a Wikipedia presence, yet their presence on Wikipedia is unlikely to be beneficial to the wider project. Just letting you know that I've 5x expanded the above, and have submitted it for DYK, mentioning your name as creator (hope that's OK?) The DYK nom template is on the article talkpage. Although the article is now long enough, to grab the submission date I've just submitted it as a placeholder for now because there is more work to do on the article (there's a whole bunch more sources out there. Sigh). The current hook is temporary - please add an ALT1 or whatever as you please. I would like it to have a hook based on something that he created, e.g. one of the war memorials, with maybe a picture of one of the sculptures on it, and I plan to add a hook like that later (unless you do it first). Let me know if there's anything you want me to correct or improve. Storye book (talk) 21:15, 15 May 2022 (UTC)

Thank you kindly, Storye book. I have added a bit in the first para of "Monuments and sculptures", and an ALT1 to your DYK. Your hook is good, but perhaps that is closer to what you are looking for. Alas, the angel looks rather dirtier in The Times image than any of those on Commons. Edwardx (talk) 14:53, 16 May 2022 (UTC)
Thank you. I have added a picture for ALT1, but please change it if you see fit. I love the mucky angel bit. Paul Day update taken down

Can you explain why you keep taking down the updated entry for Paul Day please? I have followed his career over many years and find the latest entry to be an accurate account of his work. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jww99 (talkcontribs) 22:05, 27 May 2022 (UTC)

Thank you, Jww99. For Paul Day (sculptor), you should refer to the edit summary, "Uncited, see Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons, Wikipedia:Citing sources, and Wikipedia:Reliable sources." Please familiarise yourself with a few basic Wikipedia policies before adding any of this again. I note that this "updated" information was first added by JacquesSculpteur. Are JacquesSculpteur and Jww99 one and the same person? Edwardx (talk) 23:09, 27 May 2022 (UTC)

Concerns regarding your edits for The Trade Desk

I am writing to learn about the reasoning behind your repeated attempts to revert The Trade Desk article back to an earlier version, that was flagged for multiple potential violations, without further elaboration.

The version (that you insist on revert back to) suffers from multiple flags, including:

  • written like an advertisement
  • exaggeration of facts
  • inaccurate information (and for half the article, repeated information)
  • lack of proper sub-headers to segment information

I respect that you are the one who created the company page in the first place, but objectively the new edits are cleaner, removes repetition, and has addressed all concerns of the old version.

So I would like to see what your reasonings are. Please elaborate, thank you.

A QPQ and a new hook are still needed for this nomination. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 01:03, 29 May 2022 (UTC)

Just noting that the nomination has been failed due to your refusal to resolve issues or provide a QPQ, or respond to any pings or talk page messages. Trainsandotherthings (talk) 02:05, 2 June 2022 (UTC)
Very sorry for the delay. QPQ now done. Seem to have spent most of my limited Wiki time lately dealing with vandalism or inappropriate edits to articles on my 20,000 page watchlist. Edwardx (talk) 11:22, 2 June 2022 (UTC)

FTSE changes

Hi - Just to make you aware, the proposed changes to the indices are not due until 20 June 2022 (nearly three weeks away) as mentioned in the Guardian article. Also, as explained in the announcement by FTSE Russell, they are still subject to change. So it is probably a bit premature to make the changes now having regard to WP:CRYSTAL. Best wishes. Dormskirk (talk) 14:19, 2 June 2022 (UTC)

Oops. Thank you, Dormskirk. More haste, less speed. Should have read the article properly. I will look into reverting my changes (after all, we can then easily reinstate them on 20 June), but have to go out for a while now. Edwardx (talk) 14:26, 2 June 2022 (UTC)
OK. Great. Thanks. Dormskirk (talk) 14:29, 2 June 2022 (UTC)
All four articles and the FTSE 100 & 250 templates fixed. Edwardx (talk) 21:44, 2 June 2022 (UTC)

A question about the publication Of a draft

Hello Edwardx, I have seen that you have already published a lot of good articles. I wrote the Draft:Philipp Hochmair and hope, after finally hopefully understanding what was all wrong, that the article will be published soon - I've been waiting for 3 months now. I don't know if this is the right place for this question, but I would very much like to know if my chances for publication are good now or if I should still change something. Can you maybe give me a hint? Pacsolis (talk) 10:21, 5 June 2022 (UTC)

Concerning DAMAC page reversed edits

My edits on the page were reversed even though they're fully cited and contains no promotional language. I was wondering what the problem was that indicates that the edit was promotional or copyvio. Thank you. --Abdullah Arfa (talk) 23:20, 16 June 2022 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) I think I'd dispute the assertion that this edit contains nothing promotional... theleekycauldron (talkcontribs) (she/they) 04:16, 17 June 2022 (UTC)
Thank you, Abdullah Arfa and theleekycauldron. For example, this is both promotional and an obvious breach of Wikipedia:Copyright violations policy, being word-for-word copy and paste from damacproperties.com and other sites: " Safa One by de GRISOGONO rises along Dubai's illustrious Sheikh Zayed Road at the edge of the evergreen Safa Park. Opening onto scenic views of the city and the sea, Safa One is surrounded by Dubai's most sought-after neighbourhoods such as the iconic Burj area with its world-renowned landmarks, Business Bay and the timeless community " If you are unable or unwilling to see this, then you should not be editing Wikipedia. I will now copy this to Talk:DAMAC Properties where any further discussion can continue. Edwardx (talk) 10:08, 17 June 2022 (UTC)

Hi Edwardx. Thank you for adding the cats for the above. As you may have seen on the article's talk page, there has been a challenge as to the notability of the article, and a tag (which I have replaced with a construction tag) threatening deletion or merge. I am now doing my best to cooperate by adding more citations, although I don't think it is necessary. I guess it will do no harm if it keeps the peace, and stabilises the future of the article. I don't have any personal interest in the article's subject; my issue with this situation is the principle of the thing. If you are able to add any more citations to the article at any time, that would be good! Storye book (talk) 11:17, 27 May 2022 (UTC)

Thank you, Storye book. Over the years, I have nominated many 100s of business biographies for deletion. These have virtually all been living people, and the articles were promotional, paid editing or conflict of interest situations, and usually of marginal notability (in Wikipedia terms) at best. It is not unreasonable of Nikkimaria to question the notability of Constantine Zochonis, bearing in mind that none of the sources amount to detailed coverage, although in their totality they may well be sufficient to meet WP:GNG. However, Zochonis has been dead for 71 years, so it is hard to see how anyone could have a personal interest, and it is certainly not the sort of article I would consider nominating for deletion. Edwardx (talk) 13:43, 27 May 2022 (UTC)
In response to my current research on C.P. Zochonis, the most interesting factor which emerges is the effect of colonialism on the African locals during his term of management. And luckily, that's what some of the journals have been looking at. I'll see what comes out of that. Storye book (talk) 13:56, 27 May 2022 (UTC)
Don't get yourself in a lather about it, he's notable. Philafrenzy (talk) 08:18, 28 May 2022 (UTC)
Yes, I know, and I find the challenge to its notability rather odd. I suppose it's a coincidence, but very recently I posted on the Women in Red talkpage that I had received challenges to the notability of some of "my" female biographies, but no such challenges to "my" male biographies. A few days after that, I received a preposterous notability challenge to a male biography that I had created in 2013, from a new editor who had just registered but had a surprising amount of in-depth knowledge about the inner workings of WP (sock? Surely not ...) I managed to resolve that one amicably. Now this Constantine Zochonis challenge, to an article which existed happily as a stub for 5 years before expansion+DYK, and which has two related articles about other managers of the same company, one of those articles being currently very minimal and still unchallenged. What is interesting about the current challenger is that she just does not want to let go. Of course, all that is pure coincidence. Storye book (talk) 10:31, 28 May 2022 (UTC)
Nominating for DYK does attract what one editor I know calls "silly attention". You just have to work around it. I have also recently had two women Ukrainian writers challenged. I can only guess at the motives but even in normal times, articles about women seem to be seen as soft targets for deletion. The only way to avoid the sniping is not to contribute, and personally I don't find that acceptable. Philafrenzy (talk) 09:56, 29 May 2022 (UTC)
Thank you for the support. And good luck with the challenged articles. Storye book (talk) 10:23, 29 May 2022 (UTC)
Update: @ Edwardx and Philafrenzy. Under pressure from the notability-challenge mentioned above, I have completed the expansion of the Constantine Zochonis article with even more notability; the profits, expansion, and colonial effect of his company under his watch, in Africa. I have made it clear that he was not "just an employee" (one of the notability challenges) and that since he was the hands-on, major-shareholding chairman of the company, every major thing that the company did was his responsibility. I shall be keeping a watch on the article, in the hope that it will now remain stable. If you both would like to do the same, at least in the short term, that would be very helpful. Thank you both for the support so far. Storye book (talk) 16:12, 9 June 2022 (UTC)
Thank you, Storye book. It has been on my watchlist ever since the first edit on 12 May 2017, and will remain watched. Edwardx (talk) 19:22, 9 June 2022 (UTC)
Bless you! And I should have said, please correct anything you don't like! Storye book (talk) 20:18, 9 June 2022 (UTC)
Update. @ Edwardx and Philafrenzy. After over a month of attempting to resolve the notability tag issue on the article talkpage, and after over a month of greatly expanding the article with many, many more acceptable citations, the tag is still reappearing every time I remove the construction tag. There is no more I can say, really, to the would-be-merger, without repeating myself. That editor is still convinced that the article and its citations are not about Constantine Zochonis, even though I have no evidence that they have read the citations. I have asked admin Keith D on his talk page to look at the article and discussion, and to give advice. I had to do something, because the tag invites a merge and others who have not read the citations may think that they can justifiably do a merge, or even a delete. It's misleading. Storye book (talk) 14:08, 29 June 2022 (UTC)
Update-update. Keith D has replied to my query and given advice here. On this occasion he has given a reply that I had hoped for (he doesn't always, but his judgement is always fair, in my opinion). Please would you both consider giving your opinion on the article talk page? According to Keith's reply the situation will remain an impasse until there are more editors weighing in to that discussion. Storye book (talk) 20:04, 29 June 2022 (UTC)
