Not much I could do about it I'm afraid. The Rambling Man pulled it without removing the credits. I told other editors to revert its removal, because the page was fully-protected. DYK preps line-up

Hi, the reason I loaded those hooks was just to vary the frequency of certain images: I noticed that people images were being placed far too frequently. Generally, we should aim for a rotation like: person - building - nature - object. Go ahead and move around the lead hooks if you wish. But I'm surprised that we're going back to slotting hooks into specific time slots. We used to do that a few years ago, but with the new 12-hour slots, I understood that we don't have to pay attention to time slots (unless, of course, the hook pertains to a very specific time, like Grammy Awards night in Los Angeles). Cool, I believe PHFLai has already moved the Fillipino satellite to its respective time slot. I've gone ahead and swapped 3 and 4. I think prep 2 about the dog isn't all that US-specific, so left it be. I agree with your opinion on the use of bios. I'm aware that certain users would like to see them being used close to 50% of the time, but I would rather see it closer to 25%. Timing of the slots is normally the least important factor, so I would never move them around if it decreased the variability of our lead hooks. Jolly Ω Janner 19:48, 15 February 2016 (UTC)

Hi again. I was thinking about what User:PFHLai said, about having hooks appear in the daytime in their respective time zones. I thought that most people work during the day and hang out on their computers at night. Personally, I am much happier when one of my hooks makes a nighttime slot in New York than a daytime slot. Hi Montanabw. We currently have a backlog at DYK, so I tend to promote nominations in the order that they were nominated. We also only have a limited amount of preps. As a result I or another editor will likely get round to promoting Naborr in at least a week's time. I'm currently promoting articles created/expanded on January 30. When you factor in the time it takes for the prep to reach the Main Page (about four days), we are looking at almost exactly three weeks from the creation date to appearing on Main Page. You can use this duration to work out the most likely time that I will be promoting your hooks. I highlighted I, because other prep builders do not work chronologically, so they may be promoted at some random time between now and then. My advice to the both of you is to seek other sources of points in the WikiCup such as Good Article reviews to achieve the required points to stay in the top 64. This will allow you to reach the next round and your DYK credits will be applied then (if they haven't been processed in the current round). Jolly Ω Janner 23:17, 18 February 2016 (UTC)

Jolly, I've ben building prep sets for a few years now, and I blend both backlogged and newer articles together. Wikicup participants don't get credit until the article hits DYK, and the round ends next week, it is a courtesy to participants (all of us) to not penalize participants because the place is backlogged. I did; I offered build a prep set that includes approved hooks for any other wikicup participant that need points by the deadline; part of the goal here is to improve articles, not get bogged down in bureaucratic backlogs. I know how to build prep sets and frequently do so. I am just disappointed that you feel no sense of professionals qpq courtesy, particularly when I promoted some articles you had passed (and thus could not also promote under the DYK rules). Hi, I noticed that you just added a non-bio hook to the quirky slot in this prep. There are only 2 bios in this 8-hook set, and I noted in the edit history that I moved a non-bio out of the quirky slot to make room for another bio. I've actually written or reviewed a few (Template:Did you know nominations/Mildred Brown Schrumpf, Template:Did you know nominations/Xu You (Southern Tang), Template:Did you know nominations/Zhang Xichun, Template:Did you know nominations/Edwina Hume Fallis, Template:Did you know nominations/Gilda E. It's relatively easy for them to duplicate user pages: you simply press "edit" and copy everything from the page. At the risk of appearing as if I am jumping to conclusions, I think they're a sockpuppet. Category clarification needed

I will admit adding Category:1907 establishments in Canada to Dodge Cove was an error, because I was not aware of the provincial subcategory, which I added later. Why is it that you still reverted the addition of the aforementioned subcat? Even if the subject is an unincorporated community, wouldn't it still count as a populated place in which people live? Quoting from your edit summary "Organizations, places, awards and competitions" are the scope of the Year of establishment in place categories. (emphasis mine). Long-closed DYKs should not be reopened

Jolly Janner, I've just reverted your reopening of the Baleen whale DYK, which was closed back in January.

If a previously nominated and rejected article gets a second chance, usually due to it becoming a GA, then a new nomination needs to be made. That's how it's supposed to be done. Unfortunately, I didn't see the recent resurrection of one of the Upanishad nominations until it was too late: there were far too many edits to the reinstated nomination for me to revert it. In this case, there were only two.

If there are problems restarting the nomination due to the template name, create it with a name like "Baleen Whale 2", and all should be well. I'd be happy to help if there are any problems. Thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 08:17, 6 March 2016 (UTC)

No, we don't; it wasn't as much of a problem in the past since it very rarely happened that an article that was nominated in its early days would be 5x expanded months or years later. Still, it does happen, and this is how it's usually handled. The nominator should transclude the new nomination template under the GA date, not the original date. @Redfiona99: of course. The most accurate way is to follow the instructions at User:Shubinator/DYKcheck#Using DYKcheck.Basically copy and paste
importScript('User:Shubinator/DYKcheck.js'); //DYKcheck tool
to User:Redfiona99/vector.js and save. When you go to the article on Carrie Johnson, there should now be a button on the left-hand column saying DYK check under "tools". Click it and it should automatically tell you whether it's been expanded 5x recently. For more detailed analysis you can click the tool while viewing the revision history. I can tell you that the article was previously 428 characters. It is currently 1,121 characters, so a further 1,019 is required (roughly double its current size). Hope that helps. No, it is perfectly acceptable to raise concerns and to discsuss hooks while they're in the prep or queue (although if it's within 12 hours of going live on the Main Page, Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors is not a bad place to post too). You should avoid posting in the nomination subpage for a particular article after it has been archived. It may well be re-opened, but you should wait until that point. @Gerda Arendt and Jolly Janner: Thanks for your work on this. I know it seems as if I am not grateful for your work, but that is not the case. Clearly what I find interesting and what everyone else does is not the same. I think I just need to be done with DYK for a while again. This is no reflection on either of you. It's too much work for too little gain. I don't see it as a positive to increase the number of women on the main page if we have to appeal to the average reader just to get them read. Sorry, I think we have a misunderstanding, which is easily my language) problem. I watch DYK for six years now and try to share my experience. I started telling the reader everything about the subject I could squeeze in 200 characters, but learned that if "everything" is said there already, the reader will not click to the article, where the context and background is. (That's not begging, nor appealing to "popular".) I also learned that DYK is watched closely for factual correctness, so try to check that early, because later adjustments are much harder. DYK can be stressful at times too, so hopefully taking a break will keep driving you to edit Wikipedia. Who knows, maybe with less time spent on the nominations, you will be able to use more resources in writing articles. Not what I meant at all Gerda Arendt. I find DYK exhausting and would far rather that someone who actually evaluates the article do the review than someone who will rubber stamp it. I learn from your reviews and truly do appreciate them. Yet, when I look at the hooks that are promoted and what makes the 5,000+ views list, it is clearly designed for popular topics. I typically write about political activism, which isn't light and appealing to most--Oh yes, and women, which WP culture isn't too keen on either. It takes far too much effort to find the sources to verify the articles and write them. Then to go through the DYK process, is just too much. I am rarely burned on accuracy, but that interesting thing, is mind-numbing. She did this is boring. She did this because of that, makes me want to know more. Clearly I'm weird. The truth is that I truly don't care if my articles appear on the front page. I do however care if the gender balance of the queues is disproportionate, but I have to let it go. It just is what it is and I cannot solve it. I have nominated a ton of articles for Women's Month and I'll finish those out, but I'm not nominating any more. Hopefully the rest will quickly be reviewed and I can back away from it. Just need to go back to writing, as the stress is too much. Like you, I write about topics that are not for the masses that make it to the stats (had two stats articles in 672). I think the DYK process is worth it to reach 300 extra readers who would not otherwise find the article. Hi, it's me again. Sorry if I may bother you. I'm still not happy with some pieces of the article, especially the "Unemployment" section. In the last few days I've been writing some things down to change the unemployment section and to add a new section regarding taxation. I think the employment is the wrong direction for the article (although the amount or prose is the right direction). Its title is "Economy of the European Union", not "Economies of member states of the European Union". Everything is broken down at a country level including the table. While general trends such as higher unemployment in the East and South may need a brief mention (perhaps no more than a sentence), the rest of it should take a more general view. It could be useful in List of countries in the European Union by unemployment. I will have to give a more thorough read through to check the verifability of the taxation section. I would advise that, unless you are citing an entire paragraph to only one citation, to use citations at the end of each sentence. It becomes very difficult to check the verifiability when each sentence could have come from four different sources and no indication of which one. I would also try to use secondary sources as much as possible i.e. something other than the European Commision for a law that they themselves enacted. This is helpful in establishing a less bias method on deciding what is and isn't suitable for the article. Jolly Ω Janner 10:29, 30 March 2016 (UTC)

Agree with the citations at the end of each sentence - I'll do that. Another question: I got most of it from a thesis I wrote at university (I study tax law) - is self plagiarism a problem? I can use secondary sources, but regarding that specific topic there's only newspaper articles. If that's not a problem, I'll use them. I agree and disagree at the same time with the employment section. It should be more general, but I think it would be a mistake to not go into details - especially because often you can't make any meaningful statements about the European Union as a whole. Its hard to give the reasons for the high unemployment (lets keep the crisis aside for a moment), if I don't talk about Southern Europe having generally a less flexible labor market or the low unemployment for people under 25 in Germany or Austria because of the reliance in their education system on vocational schools. The European Union is not a country and consists of different economies, thus I think breaking it up by country is helpful. Having said that I agree with you with trying to keep it more general. How about keeping it general in the written text (that means completely different than the stuff I wrote) and using the table to show the differences in each country.Olliyeah (talk) 13:19, 30 March 2016 (UTC)

So long as you didn't publish your thesis with a copyright notice, I see no problem. Yes, always cite everything. I think highlighting key country's economic policies that effect unemployment may be helpful, but it reads like a broken down list of each country. No one really cares about Malta, unfortunately. It's all about the big economics like Germany. I would assume this to be quite apparent if you were to read and derive some information from printed works. I actually think the tables should be off in separate articles. If we're ever to get the article in decent shape, eradicating tables is the top priority. I would suggest keeping the article to a maximum of one table as the economies of member states (that's why I put so much effort into it!), as it's the only one worth keeping. Unemployment is already in that table. A more detailed analysis of unemployment and for each country goes outside of the scope of article. Economy of India, Economy of Iran and Economy of Ohio are good precedents to go by. Take note of how much of the article's space is taken up by tables. I've done a cleanup. The referendum is not a devolved matter, so it makes a rather bold claim when you use different heading levels for English regions than Scotland... I also removed Northern Ireland's "section" entirely, since it is duplicated (hopefully this is seen as common sense rather than an attempt to make a statement about NI). I also removed that sea-saw graphic. I understand some things are helped with graphics, but simply stating 55% voted X is about as simple as it gets. Gibraltar is covered by SW England section. All of the maps used in the draft need to be uploaded under a different name anyway (eventually they will be overwritten when the results are released). If one was to overwrite that map now, it would have unfortunate consequences for the rest of our articles! On another note, the files do not have a rationale for being free. The wrong license tags were used. The SA one just says "No copyright shall subsist in official texts of a legislative, administrative or legal nature, or in official translations of such texts.".
