Mayors of Nelson

I notice that you are writing an article on mayors of Nelson. It looks promising, but I suggest you look at some of the articles in Category:Lists of mayors of places in New Zealand, which are in chronological format. Also, note that there is an informal naming convention for these articles.-gadfium 05:08, 27 January 2010 (UTC)

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Joseph Henry Levien requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hang on}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion, or "db", tag; if no such tag exists, then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hang-on tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. Kante4 (talk) 02:49, 30 November 2010 (UTC)

Do you want me to show you how to prevent something like this from happening? Schwede66 04:04, 1 December 2010 (UTC)

Naming conventions for people

Hi there, I see you've changed the redlinks for a couple of people. The convention for names is as follows:

  • If the person was known as Edward Everett, then that's the name that should be chosen for the article.
  • If there is already another page (or a disambiguation page) that uses Edward Everett, then a disambiguator should be added to the name in brackets (e.g. Edward Everett (mayor))
  • If the person was known by both his first and middle name, then that's what should be chosen as the article name, e.g. Edward William Everett. But if that's the case, then the name doesn't need to be piped (i.e. the Edward William Everett|Edward Everett bit).

If you have any queries about this, please ask (you can reply here). Do you have the Nelson mayors page watchlisted? That is, have you seen the comment that I left for you on the talk page? Schwede66 04:02, 1 December 2010 (UTC)

Citations

My suggestion is that you start using the cite tool that is provided when you have the editor window open. On the editor bar, there is a button Cite. Click on it. This brings up a second bar underneath. Templates has a dropdown list and if you quote a newspaper, use the option cite news. From then on, it's just filling out a form. You'll have to expand that form by clicking on Show/hide extra fields to get to the input for page numbers. Most importantly, the form lets you record the URL of the newspaper article, which enables others to conveniently go back to the source that you are quoting.

The field Ref name is an important one. Think of a good descriptor (e.g. 'obituary' or 'Nov 1850 editorial') when you define the reference. When you want to quote the same reference again, it's available as a choice in Named refs (it shows with the descriptor name), which saves you from having to type it all again, and it results in a single entry in the references list.

Any queries, please ask (here's good - I've got you on my watchlist). I'd be glad to help. Schwede66 04:16, 7 December 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the tip. I'll try it out on my next update. NealeFamily (talk) 20:57, 7 December 2010 (UTC)

Almac (automobile)

I've just finished reading the article Almac (automobile), (As I have several half-started half-finished articles myself, I know that completing it is something you must feel proud of.) I do want to note the important of using complete references for your sources. Web page URLs can change over time, so supplying the author's name, the publication, and date are necessary. Using the citation templates makes this easier, since you won't have to worry about proper formatting. Again, good job! Now I'm off to learn about the mayors of Nelson... Hi NealeFamily, I've noticed your comment on my Talk page. As you mention, I decided to decline the article at this time, because the news coverage seemed to appear only in specialist kit car publications. WP:CORPDEPTH gives guidance about how Wikipedia judges 'notability' for businesses and organisations. As you will see, we need to consider how broad the audience is for published coverage and normally at least one example of general news coverage in regional or national media would be required before a subject was worthy of a WP article. I hope that helps you! Kind regards. Sionk (talk) 03:23, 12 January 2012 (UTC)

Hi NealeFamily, I've noticed your message on my Talk page. Have you considered writing an article about Reid himself? He seems to be an inventor of some importance and you could then mention his construction of these cars in the same article (as well as his other works). The sources you cite do not make any claims that these three cars were important in NZ's history. For that reason I declined your article. Sionk (talk) 03:14, 12 January 2012 (UTC)

Guidance reply

Hello one of you articles (Alternative Cars Limited) seems to have enough references to be "worthy of inclusion in an encyclopedia" dont know why is was not accepted, the Reid Steam Car article could benefit if you could find more sources to give it more "notability", you can also ask help from WP:CARS discussion. About List of fastest production cars its hard to say anything because those references to those cars are not online so I cant verify those claims, but the source should say "world fastest car". With that info I think the Diablo could be removed from list. -->Typ932 T·C 20:01, 12 January 2012 (UTC)

Hi, I saw the message you posted about the notability of this article. I think notability of this poet is not strong. Tasman cups

I'm happy to see the NZ race builders put back in. I do think, tho, debate would be a good idea, if only to settle whether this is "auto industry" or "sport" or something else. It's never been clear in my mind just where the line between, say, Ferrari, Lotus, & Lola is compared to, IDK, Miller (the Indy car builder). I'll wager it's not entirely clear for others, too. I didn't take it out, but I also have some (lesser, to be sure) doubts about including kit builders in "auto industry"; maybe my biases are showing. :) I should also say, I'm embarrassed to admit, I didn't think to just go & raise the issue at the Project talk page... :( TREKphiler any time you're ready, Uhura 02:53, 9 August 2012 (UTC)

1969 Pontiac Steam Car

Dear Editor, Thanks for adding that one sentence on the negative aspects of the 1969 Pontiac Steam car. I wondered about it, and it makes sense. I could find no more than that one PR-Shill article in Popular Mechanics (they deny it, but the Big-3 pays for those rosy articles in PM and PS). And I hope some Wiki fanatic does not come along and deletes it. Future readers need to know why steam cars -- except before 1910 -- were not practical.

Finally, a little tidbit. During WW1 the US Army built a steam powered tank and in the 1950s they even built a more modern steam tank. But for tanks, the weight and cost is not a negative aspect. <GRIN> Again, thanks for answering my curiosity.

Disambiguation link notification for October 23

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Samuel Brown (mayor), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Midland Line (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

URLs

Good work expanding the Lee Vandervis article. Just a general comment (i.e. not just in relation to that article)—your edits would be even more valuable if you included web addresses (URLs) within references. If anybody wants to go to the source itself, it's much easier to have the URL. Any queries on that, please let me know (replying here is fine; I've got you watchlisted). Schwede66 00:24, 31 October 2012 (UTC)

Thanks Schwede - I'll back edit the references. I'm off to the Library for a bit as he apparently stood in the 1984 election for the NZ Party but I need proof. NealeFamily (talk) 00:27, 31 October 2012 (UTC)

Deletions

Hey Neale thanks for your message, are you in Wiki Project New Zealand?. It's quite cool how there is a lot of scope in New Zealand to write some good articles which haven't been done yet. In terms of your message, does "no article is better than a blank/bad one" usually happen? Thanks for that. What quality would you recommend before passing a deletion threshold? Would stubs get deleted? Thanks for your help. Wipkipkedia (talk) 10:27, 19 November 2012 (UTC)

Isn't there a good photo with an expired copyright? That would make this good article great.

Lullabies for Macy Rose (album)

When I recently proposed the article Johnny Barker (entertainer) for deletion, you voted keep citing coverage within NZ's main national media. I do not live in NZ, so was not aware of this. I was also intending to propose for deletion the article Lullabies for Macy Rose (album) but, if this also has coverage within NZ's main national media, I will not do so. I give my reason for deletion at Talk:Lullabies for Macy Rose (album)#Notability. Please tell me what you think. (And please respond either here or at Talk:Lullabies for Macy Rose (album)#Notability.) Many thanks, HairyWombat 06:32, 17 April 2013 (UTC)

On this issue I would vote for a merge - I agree it doesn't quite get there by itself.NealeFamily (talk) 08:50, 17 April 2013 (UTC)
Merge looks good. However, I will wait to see the outcome of Johnny Barker (entertainer) before proceeding; there may not be an article into which to merge. (Having said that, the result almost certainly will be "Keep: No consensus".) HairyWombat 06:43, 18 April 2013 (UTC)

Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to Japanese occupation of Malaya, North Borneo and Sarawak may have broken the syntax by modifying 1 "()"s. If you have, don't worry, just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.

Thanks, BracketBot (talk) 23:03, 29 May 2013 (UTC)

What's your problem with adding online references? Are you scared? Do you know online references? Your just making a problem for yourself. The rule that supports it is common sense. Find a wikipedia article that is purely based on offline references. If you could find a wikipedia article that doesn't have an online reference, then I will accept your submission. PROD vs. AfD

Hi there, you added WP:Proposed deletion templates to two articles, then put invalid links on the WP:Articles for deletion log. These are two different processes for deletion. While I think that you meant to use WP:AfD instead of WP:PROD, I've kept the PROD templates on the pages. If anyone objects, they will be taken to AfD. I suggest reading over the processes for the two types of deletion so that you don't make any mistakes. Thanks, Ansh666 23:53, 28 July 2013 (UTC)

No problem. Happy editing! Ansh666 00:00, 29 July 2013 (UTC) (By the way, if you plan to do a lot of PRODding or AfD-ing, might I suggest WP:Twinkle?)

Occupation

A discussion but not a RM. Axis troops did occupied Thailand. Check the edit history of the article. Compare to the contents of the creator to those of now, the contents are 90% changed. It's like some Thai national-style edits keep changing the tone of words to show that it was not an occupation. But the occupation was viewed by many others. ༆ (talk) 03:08, 29 July 2013 (UTC)
