A barnstar for you!

The Anti-Vandalism Barnstar
For fighting vandalism like a cheetah with STiki. 10K is amazing. Keep it up. -- (T) Numbermaniac (C) 08:45, 1 July 2013 (UTC)
Thank you very much. It's really wonderful someone appreciates your good work. Thanks again Numbermaniac. Happy editing.--Pratyya (Hello!) 08:52, 1 July 2013 (UTC)
You're welcome smile. By the way, the wikibreak template at the top of this page says 7 June. Isn't that past...? -- (T) Numbermaniac (C) 08:54, 1 July 2013 (UTC)
It should be 7 July. Thank you for showing me the mistake. Anyway I have fixed that.--Pratyya (Hello!) 08:58, 1 July 2013 (UTC)

WikiCup 2013 June newsletter

We are down to our final 16: the 2013 semi-finals are upon us. A score of 321 was required to survive round 3, further cementing this as the most competitive WikiCup yet; round 3 was survived in 2012 with 243 points, in 2011 with 76 points and in 2010 with 250 points. The change may in part be to do with the fact that more articles are now awarded bonus points, in addition to more competitive play. Reaching the final has, in the past, required 573 points (2012, a 135% increase on the score needed to reach round 4), 150 points (2011, a 97% increase) and 417 points (2010, a 72% increase). This round has seen over a third of participants claiming points for featured articles (with seven users claiming for multiple featured articles) and most users have also gained bonus points. However, the majority of points continue to come from good articles, followed by did you know articles. In this round, every content type was utilised by at least one user, proving that the WikiCup brings together content contributors from all corners of the project.

Round 3 saw a number of contributions of note. Idaho Figureskatingfan (submissions) claimed the first featured topic points in this year's competition for her excellent work on topics related to Maya Angelou, the noted American author and poet. We have also continued to see high-importance articles improved as part of the competition: Wyoming Ealdgyth (submissions) was awarded a thoroughly well-earned 560 points for her featured article Middle Ages and 102 points for her good article Battle of Hastings. Good articles James Chadwick and Stanislaw Ulam netted Australia Hawkeye7 (submissions) 102 and 72 points respectively, while 72 points were awarded to Poland Piotrus (submissions) for each of Władysław Sikorski and Emilia Plater, both recently promoted to good article status. Collaborative efforts between WikiCup participants have continued, with, for example, New South Wales Casliber (submissions) and Canada Sasata (submissions) being awarded 180 points each for their featured article on Boletus luridus.

A rules reminder: content promoted between rounds can be claimed in the round after the break, but not the round before. The case in point is content promoted on the 29/30 June, which may be claimed in this round. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. We are currently seeing concern about the amount of time people have to wait for reviews, especially at GAC- if you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to reduce the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Silver overlay

Hello, this is tough to see my article not being accepted although I made all these inline citations what I was asked to do. This seemed to be the only thing what still should be added by me. If you read in the history the article was defined as very much needed article in Wikipedia - so I cannot understand to see it declined without any given reasons. I would be happy to get an answer where I still can make it better. Silberbelagwaren (talk) 13:26, 1 July 2013 (UTC)

Silberbelagwaren, I believe you saw the submission page. There are 3 same section at the bottom of the article. Also they are fully blank section. Again it is better if you put literature before reference. It isn't a rule. But every wiki page follows this style and it looks good. Fix this errors then again submit the article. Meantime I'll post a message at your talk-page. Happy Editing.--Pratyya (Hello!) 13:36, 1 July 2013 (UTC)

Hello again, thanks for that extra speedy answer ! Hope that I can simply delete these blank sections (really don t know how and why they added themselves...); and literature before references - ok ! Thanks again Silberbelagwaren (talk) 13:50, 1 July 2013 (UTC)

You are welcome.--Pratyya (Hello!) 13:57, 1 July 2013 (UTC)

Hello Pratyya, I did now the changes I was asked for and made a new submission. May be you find time to have a look for it ? Silberbelagwaren (talk) 20:30, 2 July 2013 (UTC)

Panjab Gharana

It appears that random tabla teachers are posting in this posting. They are not major or even notable figures in this Gharana, thus I saw it fit to remove them. I am a student of Ustad Allah Rakha Khan, and read the post and found it intriguing that those names were listed there, thus removed them — Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.66.255.254 (talk) 14:44, 1 July 2013 (UTC)

Hi there. You removed my contribution to the page - 'Magna Carta' where I changed the 'Pop Music' section to being named 'Hip Hop Music'.

I think you made a mistake simply because Jay Z is not 'Pop' music. The section should either be called 'Hip Hop Music' or just 'Music', but it should not be called 'Pop Music' because it isn't.

Thanks

VisualEditor newsletter

Hey Pratyya Ghosh. We've just rolled out a new version of the VisualEditor :). Changes and patches include:

  • Newly added templates now list their available parameters if TemplateData is available;
  • The load for the VisualEditor on apages is now 4 KiB, down from 119 KiB;
  • Feedback dialog is no longer chased off the screen by typing (bug 50538)
  • Fixed the Monobook issues around z-indexes (bug 50241)
  • Undoing an image resize doesn't make everything look bad
  • In the image dialog, "Caption content" is now just "Caption"
  • Tweaked tooltip references to VisualEditor to instead talk about "source mode"

Those are the big ones; more coming at the end of this week or early next week :). It's a short list, but the load issue took up a lot of time, as did TemplateData, and are both pretty big changes. If you've got any questions, drop them on my talkpage. Thanks, Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 01:16, 4 July 2013 (UTC)

Review query

Regarding your review of Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_creation/Luis_Ximénez_Caballero, the user arrived to ask some questions about the submission of their article in irc #wikipedia-en-help and it was pointed out to them that articles submitted to the en-wikipedia must be written in English. Perhaps this might be something you can consider for future reviews, I understand there is a specific decline reason which can be used in these circumstances and they will be redirected to the correct language version of wikipedia automatically. --nonsense ferret 00:41, 6 July 2013 (UTC)

Hey,

Would you want me to keep an eye on your adoption school? :) Just so I know everything is going ok?

Also, did you ask anyone about you taking adoptions? If so, what did they say? :)

Hello Prattya

I have submitted an article and this is the first article that I have submitted. I realise that it has been declined for references. I dont know how to edit links to this article and references to the people mentioned. If you could assist I would appreciate your assistance.

If you could help that would be great

Thanks

VisualEditor newsletter

Hey Pratyya Ghosh! We've just deployed some fixes to the VisualEditor. These include:

  • "Edit" will load the latest version, not the version you're looking at (bug 49943)
  • "Edit" will load the latest version, not the version you edited last time if this is your second edit (bug 50441)
  • VE edit section links will load the latest, not original, version in diff view preview (bug 50925)
  • <big><big>Foo</big></big> and similar repeated tags will not get corrupted any more (bug 49755)

In the meantime, testing is proceeding well, and hopefully we can get some more fixes out over the next couple of days. If you're interested in helping out, we have a set of open tasks we'd really appreciate your assistance with :). Thanks, Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 07:54, 9 July 2013 (UTC)

Hi Pratyya,

you have accepted my article on Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_creation/Maciej_Tarnogrodzki on the 8th of July after I made changes with references. However after couple of days this article was moved back by some other user to "article for creation". I don't know what is the process- you accepted and then someone else is moving back. Can you please advise.

Could you help me out?

Hi Pratyya!

Thanks for checking over my contribution called Top Talent (Korea).

I'm having some trouble and wonder if you might be able to help me out. I'm trying to put a table in for series overview but whenever I save, the table appears under the references rather than in the spot I allocated in the code box. Can you give me a tip about how I might fix this? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks :)

VE newsletter

Hey Pratyya Ghosh

We just deployed another VisualEditor release; bugs fixed include:

  • Firefox 13/14 has been temporarily blacklisted, to avoid the insertion of broken links [[./that look like this]] (50720)
  • Changing a reference in a template should no longer produce the bright red "you don't have a references block!" error (bugzilla:50423)
  • Notices are now shown if you're editing a protected or semi-protected page (bugzilla:50415)
  • The template inspector will no longer invite you to insert parameters that are already being used (50715)
  • Same as above, but with aliases (50717)
  • Parameter names in the template dialogue now word-wrap (50800)
  • The link inspector will not show in the top left if you hit the return key while opening it (49941)
  • Hitting return twice in the link editor will no longer introduce a new line that overwrites the link (51075)
  • Oddly-named categories no longer cause corruption (50702)
  • The toolbar no longer occasionally covers the cursor (48787)
  • Changing the formatting of text no longer occasionally scrolls you upwards (50792)

Not specific bugs, but other things; cacheing is now improved, so people should stop seeing temporary breaking when the VisualEditor updates, and RTL support has received some patches. I hope this newsletter is helpful to people; I'll send out another one with the next deployment :). Thanks, Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 10:04, 11 July 2013 (UTC)

Query

"Okay. What you've said is you think right. But I don't think. In fact what you said in my talk page is called Personal Attack here. You need to be polite when you are posting message at talkpages. Or else you'll get another warning. But I'm not warning you. I'm telling you something. Which revision do you think is right. The first or the second. It's up to you. But in my thinking you cannot post a (WHEN?) in article space but you can post [citation needed] as you did in the second revision. So I think you understand why I reverted your first edit. Cheers and create an account if you want to edit wiki cause this will benefit you.--Pratyya (Hello!) 13:26, 11 July 2013 (UTC)"

Excuse me? What utter nonsense. What I said was polite. I didn't shout and swear and curse. In fact NONE of the things listed in Personal Attack applied. Just because I criticized your actions does not make it a Personal Attack. I asked you questions that you did not answer. I asked why you simply undid the edit and didn't add what would have been correct. You did half a job, and I wanted to know why. Do not try and put blame on me for questioning you.

All right. But I was reverting vandalism and that is a very very important work. I wasn't editing your article but reverting vandalism. So please don't blame me for that. And I would highly appreciate if this discussion ends here. --Pratyya (Hello!) 14:15, 11 July 2013 (UTC)

VE newsletter

Hey Pratyya Ghosh; hope you had a decent weekend :). We've got a pile of patches, some of which went out on Monday, some yesterday:

  • If you insert wikitext such as links or section headers, you get a notice in the top right corner (over the save button). It doesn't go away until click, though once dismissed you don't get another one that edit. (49820)
  • If your edit token expires, VE fetches a new one for you so you can save. (50424)
  • If the page is empty of content but does have something non-content (like a category or an HTML comment), VE no longer crashes on load - (50289)
  • sub tags are no longer removed ((49873)
  • If you type at the end of links, they now extend
  • Templates now only take a single click to insert
  • Clear annotations clears links (50461)
  • The link inspector stays open when you click to another item (50895)
  • Typing after multi-byte characters no longer creats pawn icons (51140)
  • Resizing thumbnails that have a default size set now works (50645)
  • References made by tag:ref now display properly (bugzilla:50978)
  • The VE is integrated with the spam blacklist (50826)
  • Feedbacl link goes to the right language (bugzilla:47730)

There are a lot more improvements coming, but that's it for Monday and Tuesday. Thanks, Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 08:14, 17 July 2013 (UTC)

Changes to SuggestBot's suggestions

We have changed the number of suggested articles and which categories they are selected from. The number of stubs has been greatly reduced, the number of articles needing sources doubled, and two new categories added (orphans and unencyclopaedic articles). We have also modified the layout of the suggestions and added sortable columns with various types of information about each article. The first two columns are:

Views/Day
Daily average number of views an article's had over the past 14 days.
Quality
Predicted article quality on a 1- to 3-star scale. Placing your cursor over the stars should give you a pop-up describing the article's quality (Low/Medium/High), current assessment class, and predicted assessment class.

The method we use to predict article quality also allows us to assess whether an article might need specific types of work in order to improve its quality. The work needed might not correspond to cleanup tags added to the article, since our method is not based on those. We have added five columns reflecting this work assessment, where a red X indicates improvement is needed. Placing your cursor over an X should give you a pop-up with a short description of the work needed. The five columns seek to answer the following five questions:

Content
Is more content needed?
Headings
Does this article have an appropriate section structure?
Images
Is the number of illustrative images about right?
Links
Does this article link to enough other Wikipedia articles?
Sources
For its length, is there an appropriate number of citations to sources in this article?

SuggestBot picks articles in a number of ways based on other articles you've edited, including straight text similarity, following wikilinks, and matching your editing patterns against those of other Wikipedians. It tries to recommend only articles that other Wikipedians have marked as needing work. We appreciate that you have signed up to receive suggestions regularly, your contributions make Wikipedia better — thanks for helping!

If you have feedback on how to make SuggestBot better, please let us know on SuggestBot's talk page. Regards from Nettrom (talk), SuggestBot's caretaker. -- SuggestBot (talk) 11:25, 18 July 2013 (UTC)

Ambrose Reid

Hi Partyya thanks for your feedback. Unfortunately this is a part of American history that is lost. I referenced the only two sites for information on the Negro League which include Ambrose's team affiliation and his stats. I even submitted a photo of Ambrose in his Homestead Gray uniform. There is nothing else to do, sorry that Wikipedia will not have this additional piece of history. The photo was accepted by wikipedia but not the story.

Why is the Magedoom not worth an article but tons of other D&D monsters are? We even have entire pages for stuff like single episodes of "The Simpsons"! Cortador (talk) 21:53, 19 July 2013 (UTC)

Thank you for your message

Hello and thanks for your message.

I am just a regular Portuguese citizen who dropped by and was a bit appalled at the fact that there are so many irregularities, omissions and even lies concerning pages about Portugal.

There are a number of Portuguese groups that are generally very active on the whole WWW. Some of them include want-to-be writers and supporters of the right-wing (banned by constitution) branch of the past Portuguese Monarchy. Since they know HTML and we (the common citizen) don't, it is generally their version that gives you the Portuguese pages of Wikipedia. Portugal has many WWW users but very few are active outside work pages, games, social networking and/or specific purposes. I would like to suggest that you may be aware of some of the pages created by «dukes», «writers», etc. It is easy for you when you are a Wikipedia programer, to see who makes the pages and know if they just contribute with one page and/or alterations about the same subject.

Sorry my HTML is not enough to create a page. I could write dozens about very important Cultural names that are missing here. But, in fact, I know nothing about HTML and my job does not allow me to take studies on it now. Neither do I need it to publicise anything. Editing houses or very rich people have their own HTML experts. That's reflecting on Portugal's entries.

All the best to you and, again, thanks for your attention. Malvina — Preceding unsigned comment added by Malvina Garrigues (talkcontribs) 17:57, 20 July 2013 (UTC)

Reverting a recent proposed change on Wikipedia regarding Galvanometers

Hi, (and by the way, YGM)

I recently edited the Wikipedia article, adding that ScannerMAX was a manufacturer of galvanometer scanners. The Wikipedia article already listed three other manufacturers (General Scanning, Cambridge and Scanlab) and so it seems to me that adding a fourth should not be considered to be spam or an advertisement, particularly when ScannerMAX manufactures scanners with the highest peak and RMS performance available on the market today. It seems that this addition added value to the Wikipedia article. Please let me know if I am wrong, or how the changes could have been more constructive or more informative.

For example, ScannerMAX galvanometers are based on truly new technology, using a brand new magnetic circuit and advanced materials. It seems that even this would be of interest to Wikipedia readers. Could a section on this new technology be added?

I certainly want to conform to Wikipedia standards and improve information available to the world community. I've written countless articles on laser scanning, applications, and projection, all available for free to help people to better understand and apply the technology.

By the way, I briefly read your bio and I am very impressed with what you have accomplished, and continue to accomplish both respect to Wikipedia and otherwise. Given your experience, you'd certainly be more authoritative on Wikipedia than myself or most other people. I would love to hear your advice and constructive criticisms.

Best regards,

William Benner

Hi William,
I was going to respond to some of your comments here, but I've put them in your user talk page instead.
Feel free to reply here (or at your Talk, or at my Talk) as needed.--R.S. Peale (talk) 21:50, 21 July 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the information and advice! I see that I have much to learn about Wikipedia and I am looking forward to it!

Best regards,

William Benner

Hi William, How are you? Hope fine. If you want to add something to Wikipedia then feel free to add without fear. But then remember one thing. You addition must have Notability and you need to provide reliable sources If you can provide these 2 then feel free to add anything. But if yo can't provide them then please don't add that information. I believe you understand what I'm saying. Hope you've got your answer. Cheers and Happy Editing. Do stay with us to improve Wikipedia.--Pratyya (Hello!) 04:04, 23 July 2013 (UTC)

Hi Pratyya,

Thanks for the information and advice. Certainly I would want nothing less for anything that I write. The current Wikipedia article on Galvanometers is rather generic, and really lacks a lot of background on what are called optical-scanning galvanometers (although it briefly touches on them in "modern uses" section). The current article briefly discusses "mirror galvanometers" which sound similar, but are a kind of different breed. I have a lot to share on this topic, but want to make sure that I'd be doing it in a completely Wiki-optimal way...

Being a complete newbie to Wikipedia writing, I am sure that I could use some tutoring... I'm wondering if you ever do Skype, and if you'd be willing to take a few minutes to chat with me about this kind of thing on Skype? A five minute conversation would get me off and running much more quickly and effectively than five hours of reading text...

By the way, I also created an account with my name (rather than PangolinLaser) after an implied recommendation from R.S. Peale, and so it's likely that any future writing would be from that name.

Best regards,

William Benner

Well then send me request at Skype and I'll talk to you tomorrow. At this time.--Pratyya (Hello!) 13:34, 23 July 2013 (UTC)

From Julia

Stop reverting my changes to Poznan page, it is my home city and I think I know better which festival is more representative of my city! Animator festival is far more international and important than Maski festival and on top of that it has is own wiki page, Maski does not have it, anyways I wrote this entire paragraph myself some time ago, so I will improve/change it whenever I chose to! Before you do such things, read about the city and what is going on there. This is really outrageous accusing me of wikipedia vandalism! Alan, I'm sorry for this late reply. Anyway, your article is still not right. At first Wikipedia doesn't allow Professor, Dr. etc before a name. But that's no big deal. The reviewing user will change that. Now please read this page. You'll know how to write an article a about a living person. See the source of this page. It'll be helpful for you. Good luck and happy editing.--Pratyya (Hello!) 15:13, 25 July 2013 (UTC)

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on User:Markoliveryu007/sandbox, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, you can place a request here. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 13:17, 28 July 2013 (UTC)

Hi

Hi, i just refresh the information....is it wronge?????

WikiCup 2013 July newsletter

We're halfway through this year's penultimate round, and the competition is moving along well. Pool A's Canada Sasata (submissions) currently leads overall, while Pool B's Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) is second. Both leaders are WikiCup veterans, and both have already scored over 600 points this month. If the round were to end today, London Miyagawa (submissions), with 274 points, would be the lowest-scoring participant to make it through. This indicates that participants will need a score comparable to last year's (573, the highest ever) to qualify for the final. The high scores this year are a testament both to the quality of participants and to the increased focus on significant content (eligible for bonus points) in this year's competition. So far this round, both Sasata and Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) have made up over half of their score through bonus points, with, for example, high importance FA koala earning Sasata a total of 440 points (from a multiplier of 4.4) and high-importance GA sea earning Cwmhiraeth a total of 216 points (from a multiplier of 7.2). Other articles on important topics submitted this round include a featured article on the Norman conquest of England by Wyoming Ealdgyth (submissions), and good articles on Nobel laureate in literature Henryk Sienkiewicz, Nobel laureate in physics Hans Bethe, and the noted Japanese aircraft carrier Hiryū. These articles are by Poland Piotrus (submissions), Australia Hawkeye7 (submissions) and Sturmvogel_66 respectively.

Other than that, there is not much to report! If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to reduce the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.
