Begonia articles
All the Begonia stubs have the text "is a species of is a species of". Could you please fix that? I'd really ask you to pay a little more attention to the quality if these stubs. There isn't that much text to check for obvious errors, after all :/ --Elmidae (talk · contribs) 15:55, 3 August 2020 (UTC) I"l gonna go fix them right now. Starzoner (talk) 16:00, 3 August 2020 (UTC)
ok what sources should I use? what are the best ones to add? Starzoner (talk) 22:12, 4 August 2020 (UTC)
- Also, two of them (Begonia thyrsoidea, Begonia thomsonii) have no refs at all, and incomplete cats. --Elmidae (talk · contribs) 16:10, 3 August 2020 (UTC)
A bit more care
Please try to remove stray text, such as Schefflera Starzoner/ from articles as you move them into mainspace. Abductive (reasoning) 01:52, 4 August 2020 (UTC)
Abductive, got it thanks. Starzoner (talk) 19:59, 4 August 2020 (UTC)
- More seriously, don't create articles like Schefflera yunnanensis sourced only to IPNI, which is a database of taxon names not taxa. Plants of the World Online, linked from the taxonbar, says Schefflera yunnanensis is a synonym of Schefflera leucantha.
- Also, plant stubs should have a stub template and a talk page with a WP:PLANTS assessment. Peter coxhead (talk) 20:03, 4 August 2020 (UTC)
- Euphorbia yinshanica has no references. GBIF gives it as a synonym for Euphorbia kansuensis. Oronsay (talk) 00:22, 5 August 2020 (UTC)
- As does Plants of the World Online, used as a reference in other Euphorbia species articles moved from User:Starzoner to mainspace. Peter coxhead (talk) 05:59, 5 August 2020 (UTC)
- Euphorbia yinshanica has no references. GBIF gives it as a synonym for Euphorbia kansuensis. Oronsay (talk) 00:22, 5 August 2020 (UTC)
Peter coxhead, what is a good source you recommend? Starzoner (talk) 12:38, 5 August 2020 (UTC)
- For plants other than ferns, Plants of the World Online is usually one of the best to establish whether the species is accepted rather than a synonym, and as you are using IPNI, it has the advantage of sharing the ID. If it's in one of the families it covers, the World Checklist of Selected Plant Families (WCSP) uses the same underlying database as POWO, so is equally good. They are normally updated regularly, although not at present because of Covid-19.
- You might be interested in looking at the wikitext of a stub I created recently, to see the normal layout, in terms of blank lines, etc: Arenaria balearica. Peter coxhead (talk) 14:40, 5 August 2020 (UTC)
- so The International Plant Names Index, and Plants of the World Online are the two best sources of information? Can I use both at one time? Starzoner (talk) 20:20, 6 August 2020 (UTC)
Also, we don't generally have articles on taxa below species level unless they are highly notable, so such items as User:Starzoner/Euphorbia_wellbyi_var._glabra are not worth moving to mainspace. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 00:37, 5 August 2020 (UTC)
- I had tagged it for deletion and now its gone. Starzoner (talk) 20:20, 6 August 2020 (UTC)

Error messages in new articles
In the reference sections of Begonia affinis and Begonia torricellensis, there are bright red notes that say Check |doi= value. Those are error messages letting you know that there's something wrong with the DOIs in those references.
Please fix errors like these before moving articles from userspace to mainspace. They show up in tracking categories for maintenance (see Category:CS1 errors: DOI), and it looks as if you've left a mess and expect someone else to clean it up for you. I'm sure you didn't mean to do that. Thank you. BlackcurrantTea (talk) 23:43, 9 August 2020 (UTC)
Endemic
Please note that "endemic" means that an organism is native to a SINGLE place. Often that place is a political unit; such as a country or subnational division. But it could be a geographical place such as a mountain range or an island (which in turn may be divided among different political; e.g. Borneo, which is split between three countries), or an ecologically defined place (e.g. the Kalahari Desert). A species that occurs in Botswana, Namibia and South Africa can not be said to be endemic to all three of those countries (this was the distribution given in one of your articles I just edited); a species that occurs in those countries might be endemic to the Kalahari Desert, but I wouldn't assume that to be true without a source stating that.
Endemism also usually is mentioned with regards to relatively small places. A species which occurs from Iran eastward to Japan wouldn't usually be described as endemic to Asia. While Botswana+Namibia+South Africa could be described as "southern Africa", if you said it was endemic to southern Africa, it wouldn't be clear whether or not it occurs in Lesotho or Mozambique. It would be better just to say that it is "native to Botswana, Namibia and South Africa".
Finally, POWO distributions may be incomplete; species may be known to occur in countries that aren't shown on the POWO map. All around it is usually better to say "native" than "endemic".Plantdrew (talk) 23:47, 10 August 2020 (UTC)

Missing ref tags & taxoboxes/italic titles
Please review the Trigonopterus articles you created in mid-February of this year. Several I looked at are missing <ref> and </ref> tags for one of the references, and because they've no taxoboxes, the titles aren't italicised, e.g. Trigonopterus toraja, Trigonopterus tomohonensis, and Trigonopterus squalidulus. As all of the articles had the same number of characters when created, it seems likely that they have the same problems. Thanks, BlackcurrantTea (talk) 03:57, 11 August 2020 (UTC)

Pointless sourcing
I don't understand why you have started bloating your species stubs with references that are of no use to the reader. Take for example [Schefflera singularis]. These are clearly just Google Books name hits, with no attempt to check up on whether there is any substantial treatment of the species in this source. A mention of the name in a list in an obscure book is of no earthly use to someone who wants further material about the topic. In this case you even left out both of the basic, useful references (IPNI and Kew). Could you please keep in mind that references are not some category that has to be filled up to look good, but links that are actually useful and represent summarized material? Cheers --Elmidae (talk · contribs) 18:12, 12 August 2020 (UTC)
- And this is - well, I don't know what the hell to say about that. I'm used to seeing passing mention carpet-bombing in biographical articles about Indian net entrepreneurs, but not in species articles... --Elmidae (talk · contribs) 18:25, 12 August 2020 (UTC)

Hello, Starzoner,
When you correct a bad page move by moving a page back to its original location, please leave a page redirect. Usually, after a page is moved, bots change all of the page redirects to the new location. But when the page is returned to the original location, if there is no redirect from the bad location to the new/original location, the page redirects are broken and are usually then deleted. If you leave a redirect, then the bot will change the page redirects back to the right location. Thanks! Liz Read! Talk! 16:41, 24 August 2020 (UTC)
- sorry. I will leave a redirect. Thanks. Starzoner (talk) 17:00, 24 August 2020 (UTC)

- Looks like Vernonia concinna S.Moore (see IPNI) is not the same as Vernonia × concinna Gleason (see IPNI). The one named by S.Moore is an African plant while the one named by Gleason occurs in Florida, and is a hybrid of Vernonia angustifolia (the one named by Michx., not D.Don ex Hook. & Arn) and Vernonia gigantea. Looking at the dates on IPNI, the Florida plant was named before the African one, so the African one probably needs a new name but either hasn't been given one, or Plants of the World Online isn't up with the literature. It's probably not worthwhile to create an article for the hybrid, but it could be mentioned at the pages for V. angustifolia and V. gigantea. —Hyperik ⌜talk⌟ 21:58, 1 September 2020 (UTC)

Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Changes later this week
- Normally pages can be moved to a title that has no existing page yet or to a page that has only one revision, which is a redirect to the page to be moved. A new user right allows editors to move pages over one-revision pages that redirect to anywhere. [4]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 8 September. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 9 September. It will be on all wikis from 10 September (calendar).
- All MediaWiki API modules will now use
watchlist
instead ofwatch
. This was inconsistent before. [5]
Future changes
- The Wikipedia Android app team might work on patrolling tools in the future. You can let them know what tools would be useful for you or for less experienced patrollers. See the page on mediawiki.org.
- OTRS will be updated to a new version. This will probably take around two days. OTRS agents will not have access to the system during these days. Emails that come in during the update will be delivered when the update is done. The plan is to start around 08:00 UTC on 14 September. This could change. [6]
- The Wikipedia Android app will send push notifications if users want them. This could help you see for example when someone wrote on your talk page or your edit was reverted. This will need Google Play Services to work. It will also be possible to get the app without Google Play Services but push notifications will not work. Google Play Services is also used to make the app work for Android 4.4 users. [7][8]
- Wikimedia code review could move to GitLab. It would be hosted on Wikimedia servers. You can take part in the consultation.
- Dropdown menus in the Vector skin use a
.menu
class. This will not work in the future. Scripts can usenav ul
instead..vectorTabs
and.vectorMenu
will also not work. Some scripts need to be updated. You can read more in Phabricator.

Nomination of Eurovision Song Contest 2022 for deletion
A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Eurovision Song Contest 2022 is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.
The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Eurovision Song Contest 2022 until a consensus is reached, and anyone, including you, is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.
Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article. dummelaksen (talk • contribs) 13:37, 15 September 2020 (UTC)
Moving categories
Please use WP:Categories for discussion to rename categories, and do not move them out-of-process, as you did here. The advantages of CFD include (i) multiple editors generally come up with better decisions, (ii) the rationale for the decision is recorded (or – if speedy – at least traceable), and (iii) the work is then done by a bot. – Fayenatic London 10:20, 18 September 2020 (UTC)
- Fayenatic london, hi, are they eligible for speedy rename? Also, I've had submitted a bunch of categories to CFD. Starzoner (talk) 12:44, 18 September 2020 (UTC)
- They are not currently eligibility for Speedy, because they go against WP:KIEV. I would suggest first seeking consensus to revise WP:KIEV.
- You have listed some current category names on the speedy page, but you have not used the required format "to [new name]", and you do not appear to have tagged the category pages, so the nominations are incomplete. Due to the above, I am not suggesting that you bother to complete them at the moment. – Fayenatic London 16:05, 18 September 2020 (UTC)
Grammar
You are still using "from family" in all your stubs, which is ungrammatical. Could you please switch to "in the family"? Thanks. --Elmidae (talk · contribs) 18:19, 19 September 2020 (UTC)

Recent changes
- There is a new tag for reverted edits. For example you can see it in the recent changes feed or in the article history. It is added to edits when they have been undone, rollbacked or manually reverted to an older version of the page. [11][12]
Changes later this week
- The number of times you can do something in a period of time on wiki is limited. This could be the number of edits per minute or the number of users you email in a day. Some users are not affected by all limits because of their user rights. They could soon see the limit even if it does not affect them. [13]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 22 September. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 23 September. It will be on all wikis from 24 September (calendar).

Speedy deletion nomination of Draft:Bleach
If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. This is a notice that the page you created, Draft:Bleach, was tagged as a test page under section G2 of the criteria for speedy deletion and has been or soon may be deleted. Please use the sandbox for any other tests you want to do. Take a look at the welcome page if you would like to learn more about contributing to our encyclopedia.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Your contributed article, Old (film)
If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
Hello, I noticed that you recently created a new page, Old (film). First, thank you for your contribution; Wikipedia relies solely on the efforts of volunteers such as you. Unfortunately, the page you created covers a topic on which we already have a page – Old (2021 film). Because of the duplication, your article has been tagged for speedy deletion. Please note that this is not a comment on you personally and we hope you will continue helping to improve Wikipedia. If the topic of the article you created is one that interests you, then perhaps you would like to help out at Old (2021 film). If you have new information to add, you might want to discuss it at the article's talk page.
If you think the article you created should remain separate, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". Additionally if you would like to have someone review articles you create before they go live so they are not nominated for deletion shortly after you post them, allow me to suggest the article creation process and using our search feature to find related information we already have in the encyclopedia. Try not to be discouraged. Wikipedia looks forward to your future contributions. BOVINEBOY2008 19:09, 26 September 2020 (UTC)
Bovineboy2008, thank you. I created a redirect. Starzoner (talk) 19:29, 26 September 2020 (UTC)
That works too. I'm going to go ahead and move it to Old (movie), as the article should probably be located where the redirect is. BOVINEBOY2008 19:30, 26 September 2020 (UTC)
Bovineboy2008, :D. glad we can work things out. Starzoner (talk) 19:32, 26 September 2020 (UTC)

Mass page creation
Can I ask why you're creating so many pages? --DannyS712 (talk) 07:49, 27 September 2020 (UTC)
- I have provisionally revoked your WP:AWB access pending your answer to this query. This looks like misuse of your WP:AWB privileges—I don't really see any legitimate reason why you seem to have created thousands of user subpages, and the rate of editing is at a bot-like level that I think you should get approval at WP:BRFA before starting another run even if you do have a legitimate reason. Mz7 (talk) 08:21, 27 September 2020 (UTC)
- Mz7, DannyS712, Hi. I just created some pages so that I can built off of them later. In the future, when I get to them, I can just continue where I started, instead of copy pasting content later on. I am sorry for going bot-like level at the rate I was going at, and I should have not done so. If so, I will have to go through BRFA. If I ever get AWB back, I will just keep it simple and work on typos in the future. Also, if you want to delete the pages I created, please do. Starzoner (talk) 13:12, 27 September 2020 (UTC)
- Starzoner, I don't really understand this rationale because you seem to have intended to create thousands upon thousands of articles. Unless you intended all along to create a bot that can automate the creation of articles (which would have certainly needed community approval before starting), to manually go through and write these thousands of articles would probably take years, if not decades. Some of our most prolific and experienced editors haven't even written a thousand articles. Mz7 (talk) 18:53, 27 September 2020 (UTC)

Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- Admins can now see links to diffs of deleted revisions on Special:AbuseLog. This uses the interface of Special:Undelete. [14]
- Editors are automatically added to some user groups. For example editors are added to autoconfirmed users when they have edited enough times and long enough. Abuse filters can hinder users from automatically getting user rights for a period of time. They can also remove rights user have. Wikis can now ask to change how long this period of time is for their wiki in Phabricator. It is currently five days. [15]
Problems
- Last year some abuse filters stopped working because of a new change. If they tried to use variables that were unavailable for that action they would fail. This has now been fixed. [16]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 29 September. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 30 September. It will be on all wikis from 1 October (calendar).
Future changes
- You can't see the language links to other language versions from the talk page or history page. They are also not shown when you edit an article. This could change. It is not decided if for example the history page should link to another history page or to the article. You can take part in the discussion in Phabricator.
- The link colours could change. This is to make the difference between links and other text more clear. You can read more in Phabricator.
- In your preferences you can choose to get different notifications on the web or by email. You will see
Apps
as one of the alternatives later this week. This is because the Android and iOS Wikipedia apps will use push notifications for those who want them. You can see the preferences on the test wiki. The goal is to have push notifications on Android in October and on iOS in early 2021. [17] - You can soon put pages on your watchlist for a limited time. This could be useful if you want to watch something for a shorter time but don't want it on your watchlist forever. It now works on mediawiki.org and will come to more wikis later. You can read more and see when it will come to other wikis.
- You can see what Wikimedians think are the best new technical tools this year. You can also nominate them.

Hi folks,
If anyone sees this, please know that I will not be making anymore plants species here on Wikipedia anymore and instead will be doing all of that over on Wikispecies.
