  • Wikipedians are invited to the GLAM Café at the Chemical Heritage Foundation to meet, talk, and edit. We provide the space, the coffee, and the snacks: you provide ideas and enthusiasm! On the second Tuesday of each month, starting November 12, 2013.

  • This is a monthly event; the first is November 12, 2013, but it will repeat.

Discussion:

  •  Done, DC-NY. It's tricky to run a repeating notice (we basically have to create it anew each month). Could you drop by and put in another request, say, 25th November so we don't forget? Andrew Gray (talk) 20:27, 23 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I fixed the end date on this one: it was earlier than the start date, so I suspect that the message wasn't being shown at all. --Redrose64 (talk) 18:56, 7 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm going to let someone else do it, I seem to be mucking up when I try to use the a tag. WormTT(talk) 13:16, 21 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

@Worm That Turned: when you say "it's not working" (08:00, 21 October 2013), what is not working? Is it displaying as plain text without markup, as text with unprocessed markup, or something else? --Redrose64 (talk) 15:57, 21 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I've never tried a direct html link - perhaps just insufficient escape slashes? FWIW, we've had external links in the past, but this is the first problem reported... on the other hand, they've never been displayed in areas I've looked at so I can't actually confirm they worked ;-) Andrew Gray (talk) 21:37, 21 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The technique has been used before - I've found this one. --Redrose64 (talk) 22:19, 21 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
At one point it removed all other geonotices - at that point I gave up and just thought it'd be easier to let someone with more experience in the area play with it! I notice there's currently another external link, that might be worth looking at too WormTT(talk) 06:50, 22 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • OK, I've confirmed that both of the single-square-bracket techniques fail because they're output as plain text with visible Wikimarkup. The <a>...</a> method definitely now works for me: I made these changes: removal of some trailing spaces; adjustment of times from 00:00 to 00:01; eastern edge moved from 1°W to 0.1°W. Of these, I suspect the last one, for reasons given elsewhere. --Redrose64 (talk) 08:57, 22 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion Thank you!

I know it's way too late to fix, but I've just noticed that the coordinates are way off for this. They are [ [-73.5081, 41.2381] , [-69.9282, 42.8868] ], that is a box bounded by 73°30′29″S 41°14′17″E / 73.5081°S 41.2381°E / -73.5081; 41.2381 and 69°55′42″S 42°53′12″E / 69.9282°S 42.8868°E / -69.9282; 42.8868 or in other words, somewhere in Antarctica. I rather suspect that the west and north have been exchanged, and that they should have been [ [41.2381, -73.5081], [42.8868, -69.9282] ], a box bounded by 41°14′17″N 73°30′29″W / 41.2381°N 73.5081°W / 41.2381; -73.5081 and 42°53′12″N 69°55′42″W / 42.8868°N 69.9282°W / 42.8868; -69.9282 --Redrose64 (talk) 17:20, 7 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Locations required:

  • Nottingham and surrounding area (perhaps 5 miles?)

Possible messages:

Date range required:

A radius of 5 miles is very small. UK Meetups are usually geotargetted at the "rectangle" bounded by 60°N 9°W / 60°N 9°W / 60; -9 50°N 2°E / 50°N 2°E / 50; 2 which brings in the whole of the British Isles, except for western Ireland, most of the Shetland Isles and the southernmost parts of Cornwall. 5 miles wouldn't even bring in Ilkeston, which is within cycling distance. --Redrose64 (talk) 13:32, 24 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Done I'm very much in favour of trying smaller notices again - shall we give it a shot? Arbitrary coordinates, [52.5, -0.75], [53.5, -1.5]. Andrew Gray (talk) 14:19, 24 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Andrew! However, I've just arrived here, and I think this geonotice is getting preempted for me by one about Manchester (which I don't see listed here). It says:
  • Interested in having a chat with fellow Wikipedians? There are forthcoming meetups in: Manchester, 6 April; Coventry, 7 April; and London, 14 April!
Do you know what's going on? (I am Nottingham at the National College. I'm happy to defer to local opinions about the radius -- I just didn't want to overreach! It's only a 2 hour session, so I thought maybe people wouldn't want to come from very far…) -Pete (talk) 16:36, 25 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It's down to where we can trace your IP address to (see #Technical details above). If it resolves to a point inside the "rectangle" bounded by 52°30′N 0°45′W / 52.5°N 0.75°W / 52.5; -0.75 53°24′N 1°30′W / 53.4°N 1.5°W / 53.4; -1.5 you should get both the Nottingham one and the Manchester/Coventry/London meetups one. If it's outside that rectangle, but inside the rectangle bounded by 60°N 9°W / 60°N 9°W / 60; -9 50°N 2°E / 50°N 2°E / 50; 2 you will get the Manchester/Coventry/London meetups one alone. --Redrose64 (talk) 17:54, 25 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You can check what IP we think you're at using this service. The UK seems to be particularly strange for identifying location, for various reasons, which is why we've tended to go for the very broad areas - I was hoping this had been fixed, but apparently not. Andrew Gray (talk) 18:27, 25 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I've expanded the area a bit - now 4x5 degrees. Purge and try again? Andrew Gray (talk) 18:40, 25 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I can see it in London now. :D KTC (talk) 19:01, 25 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I am in Didcot, and I now see both the Nottingham one and the Manchester/Coventry/London meetups one immediately beneath. geoiplookup thinks that I am at 51°30′N 0°08′W / 51.5°N 0.13°W / 51.5; -0.13 which is Methodist Central Hall Westminster; if it can be fifty miles off for me, it's not surprising that it couldn't work out that Pete is in Nottingham. --Redrose64 (talk) 20:40, 25 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for troubleshooting this! Both are now showing up for me as well. In case it helps in any of your diagnosing: my IP here at the University of Nottingham (at least at the moment) is: 62.252.24.130 -Pete (talk) 17:01, 26 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Done. There's one more notice up for the UK, hope it doesn't look too odd on the watchlist. MikeLynch (talk) 14:30, 15 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Deadline for the jobs (5pm 8th Feb) has now passed, so it would be great if someone could remove the geonotice. Thanks, Richard Nevell (WMUK) (talk) 17:13, 8 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Done, but I think it'll be better if the message is shortened, lest it becomes annoying for users. MikeLynch (talk) 02:18, 15 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Does this mean I need to submit new wording or have you shortened the text? Perhaps the following: "You're invited to the upcoming Wikipedia edit-athon, scheduled for Saturday, February 9 from 2–5pm in downtown Portland. Details and signup here!" Thanks again. --Another Believer (Talk) 16:29, 15 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
No, I haven't shortened it myself. Thanks, I'll update it. Let me know if you can't see it or you face any other problems. MikeLynch (talk) 01:52, 16 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I am moving this request to the "requests" section. Do you have a link for the Pakistan mailing list? If so, please include it in the message. If not, I don't think the message will be very useful since users will not know where to go. Thanks! MikeLynch (talk) 08:17, 14 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
We could simply point people towards meta:Wikimedia Pakistan, which gives some context; I'm not sure that linking people to the signup page for a mailing list is the best approach. Andrew Gray (talk) 09:29, 14 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Very well, I'll modify the message a bit (WMF Chapter -> Wikimedia Chapter and etc). If the message's okay, we can post I guess. MikeLynch (talk) 09:35, 14 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Wording looks fair enough - wondering about coordinates, though. A simple bounding box will also take in most of Afghanistan (unlikely to be an issue) and about a third of the population of India (which perhaps will provoke some comments). Thoughts? Andrew Gray (talk) 12:03, 14 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Shouldn't be too much of a problem if we avoid the major Indian cities. If we put the box to include Lahore, Islamabad and Karachi, while avoiding Delhi, Srinagar, Jaipur and Ahmedabad, we should be good. A large part of western India is desert, and not many IPs will geolocate there. 34N, 74.5E to 24.5N, 62.1E should be good. MikeLynch (talk) 12:35, 14 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Done Looks fine to me (we've only got one other UK notice up). I wonder if it's worth us experimenting with regional notices again, though? The system seems to have improved since 2011... Andrew Gray (talk) 13:35, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The location has changed to Manchester, if someone could update the geonotice to reflect that it would be really helpful. Thanks, Richard Nevell (WMUK) (talk) 14:13, 18 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

We're now oversubscribed so it would be helpful if someone could take down this notice. Thanks, Richard Nevell (WMUK) (talk) 17:08, 12 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
