Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Thank you for your attention. Badbilltucker 20:18, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

None of the articles listed in this section of the project page are actually featured articles. I'm not sure if the page is using the term generically to mean "good articles", or if there is some misunderstanding. Please change this section to use some other term, or move articles which have not received featured status out of the section.-gadfium 08:18, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

Australia - Fiji Federation?

I have been reading "A New Geography Comparitive" by Prof. J.M.D. Meiklejohn, pub. Alfred M.Holden, London, 1898, in which he stated (p.454:18) "Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, Tasmania, West Australia and the Fiji Islands have formed a Federation." As there is no mention of this in the Wikipedia material, I wondered if this had any factual basis. Iandmac 08:56, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

User:Warlordjohncarter has activated this Project. It clearly overlaps with the Fiji Project. How do you think the two projects should be related? --Bduke 23:03, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

Bilateral relations discussion

I would like to invite you all to participate in a discussion at this thread regarding bilateral relations between two countries. All articles related to foreign relations between countries are now under the scope of WikiProject Foreign relations, a newly created project. We hope that the discussion will result in a more clean and organized way of explaining such relationships. Thank you. Ed ¿Cómo estás? 18:57, 8 April 2007 (UTC)

Waisale Serevi FAC

I have nominated Waisale Serevi for FAC. It's be great for a Fiji article to be an FA, and this guy is a great player. You can leave your comments here. Any comments are welcome, and if there are concerns raised any help addressing them would be fully appreciated. Many hands make light work! Thanks. - Shudda talk 07:54, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

The parameters of Template:WikiProject Melanesia could be easily adjusted to give separate assessments for this project. Would the members of the project wish such action or not? John Carter (talk) 20:59, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

Use of "Fijian" to denote a Fijian Citizen or something of Fiji

I noticed that Wikipedia uses the term "Fijian" when referring to a citizen of Fiji or referring to something belonging to Fiji e.g Fijian Constitution, Fijian Government, Category:Fijian judges, Category:Fijian trade unionists, etc.

While the term is (wrongly) used widely by the media outside Fiji as refering to anything from Fiji, within Fiji (both legally and in the media) itself the term is used exclusively when refering to ethnic Fijians. Shouldn't Wikipedia use the term "Fijian" like how it is used in Fiji too since that is the correct usuage of the term?

i.e. This would mean renaming all Catergories/ references that use "Fijian" to refer to Fiji citizens and things from Fiji Tiki Nss (talk) 07:26, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

The term Fijian is used in all the english speaking world to refer to people from Fiji. So it's according to Wikipedia rules.Mistico (talk) 15:40, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

Errrm is Fiji not part of the English speaking world? Besides while "Fijian" is indeed used by the world media, in political and academic circles this would not be the case and since wikipedia is an encyclopedia shouldn't the correct terminology be used be used instead? Tiki Nss (talk) 10:17, 17 August 2008 (UTC)

Nope, on Wikipedia we do not play the racial card and anyone from Fiji who is the citizen of that country regardless of their race or ethnic background is classed as a "Fijian" here..--Cometstyles 11:39, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

This has nothing to do with playing any race card. If the Fiji Government both officially and unofficially does not use the adjective "Fijian" to describe citizens of Fiji, the term must not be used in Wikipedia to described Citizens of Fiji as to do so would be incorrect. "Fijian is to Fiji" just as "Malay is to Malaysia" just as "Moari is to New Zealand" just as "Aborigine is to Australia". The correct term for a citizen of Fiji is "Fiji Islander" and "Fiji" is the correct generic adjective used to describe anything general from Fiji. If anyone has a reliable source that specifically says otherwise I would like to see it. Tiki Nss (talk) 11:37, 25 August 2008 (UTC)

Constitution of Fiji

Hi! I just came across the Constitution of Fiji article series. It seems that some of the articles in the series contain analysis of the document's chapters, although it is poorly sourced, and others just present the exact text of the chapters. I've PRODed a few of these later ones because the information is already available on WikiSource, but I thought I'd mention it all here for someone more familiar with Fiji to look into. -Drilnoth (talk) 17:45, 4 February 2009 (UTC)

Coordinators' working group

Hi! I'd like to draw your attention to the new WikiProject coordinators' working group, an effort to bring both official and unofficial WikiProject coordinators together so that the projects can more easily develop consensus and collaborate. This group has been created after discussion regarding possible changes to the A-Class review system, and that may be one of the first things discussed by interested coordinators.

All designated project coordinators are invited to join this working group. If your project hasn't formally designated any editors as coordinators, but you are someone who regularly deals with coordination tasks in the project, please feel free to join as well. — Delievered by §hepBot (Disable) on behalf of the WikiProject coordinators' working group at 05:24, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

Not sure how active this project is - but there are a large number of pages that need updating in respect to the ongoing situation in Fiji. I have worked on a few including the one in the title but many others remain. Lots of help would be appreciated. Rmhermen (talk) 18:14, 11 April 2009 (UTC)

I have kept the 2009 Fijian constitutional crisis pretty well up-to-date. There are a number of related court and government agency pages that still need updating, at least to mention there current fluid situation. Fiji seems to have a pretty large selection of articles compared to some other small countries - but that may mean more work to keep them updated. Rmhermen (talk) 19:36, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

Fiji Foreign relations : Rest of the World

Could someone note that the table entry for United Kingdom ends with a reference to United States attitudes. This is either a simple typographical error in that "US" should read "UK" or the reference should be in the United States entry. Hopefully, someone knows enough to resolve this. 86.16.134.133 (talk) 16:00, 6 March 2010 (UTC)

The article on this former President of the Fiji Law Society was tagged as an unreferenced biography of a living person in March 2009. I have now added one reference which takes it out of the "unreferenced" category, but it seems to me from the content that some of it could be regarded as controversial and should be fully referenced. I'm posting here in the hope that someone with better knowledge of Fijian politics and recent history than I will take an interest and improve the article. It could probably also do with moving to "Graham Leung" as there are more news hits under the spelling of that name.--Plad2 (talk) 08:39, 23 January 2011 (UTC)

Similar problem with Naiqama Lalabalavu - can you help?

A similar problem to that with Graham Leung (posted just above). Long-term unreferenced BLP. Potentially controversial content. No mention of the prison sentence which led to the 2005 resignation, for instance. Needs oversight, updating and references adding by someone with better knowledge of recent political history than I. I've added one reference, which takes it out of the "unreferenced" category but I feel it urgently needs more attention. Hopefully, someone here will find it interesting enough to take it on.--Plad2 (talk) 09:03, 23 January 2011 (UTC)

Need help on Moala Islands

The article on the Maola islands is lacking in good sources. When I tried fixing it up, I noticed a disagreement about which islands comprise the group, how many islands there are, and what the proper name of the island group is. Whereas the article says there are three islands that collectively make up the "Maola Islands," this National Geographic article[1] seems to refer to this group of islands as the "Yasayasamoala group," which is says encompasses "Totoya, Moala, Vanuavatu and Matuku islands, plus the atoll Navatu." Which is the proper name for this group of islands? And are Vanuavatu and Matuku one thing, or two truly distinct islands? TheBlueCanoe 05:14, 29 January 2013 (UTC)

Best way to contribute photos?

Bula everybody. I'm new here and I'm starting to make contributions relating to Fiji.

I'm in the process of uploading my own photos to Wikimedia Commons, and am wondering what the best way to contribute photos to articles.

Should I add photos to the appropriate areas myself? Should I put them on the discussion section of the relevant article page first?

Help would be appreciated --Fijiisparadise (talk) 09:51, 21 July 2013 (UTC)

Be Bold and add them in if the article is suitable and can cope with it. If someone objects then talk to them and come to an agreement before potentially re-adding them. On another note it seems like you need to provide some evidence that you own the images before they can be used.Jason Rees (talk) 12:09, 21 July 2013 (UTC)

Problem with articles in Template:1997 Constitution of Fiji

Virtually all articles there are copies of text of the articles of the Fiji constitution, and as such should be in wikisource. Is there anyone who can transwiki/compare/comment on them before I AfD them as content that should not be on Wikipedia? If you reply here please WP:ECHO me. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 07:48, 26 April 2016 (UTC)

Would some members from this WikiProject take a look at this article? It's seems to have been pretty much unsourced since 2008; someone recently added some general references to videos found on YouTube, but these appeared to be user-generated content (possibly even home videos) and not anything which would likely be seen as being reliable per WP:RS, WP:YOUTUBE and WP:RS/P#Sources. Quite a bit of the article has the feel of someone's original research, which probably needs to go, and what's left (and what can be supported by sitations) would need to be written more in an encyclopedic WP:TONE, and should possibly be divided up into a few sections to improve readability. The page was moved a few years back from Wilisoni Malani to its current title without any real discussion; so, this might need to be reassessed as well. Normally hereditary titles like Ratu are not included in the titles of pages about monarchs, etc. per WP:NCNT#Names and titles outside the West for articles like this, but maybe the WP:COMMONNAME is to use "Ratu". -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:41, 15 September 2019 (UTC)

Waisale Serevi now a GA nom

I've been working on Waisale Serevi for some time. I have nominated it for Good Article status but it may need a copy-edit before it's promoted. This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.

If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.

Unreferenced living people articles bot

User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects provides a list, updated daily, of unreferenced living people articles (BLPs) related to your project. There has been a lot of discussion recently about deleting these unreferenced articles, so it is important that these articles are referenced.

The unreferenced articles related to your project can be found at >>>Wikipedia:WikiProject Fiji/Archive 1/Unreferenced BLPs<<<

If you do not want this wikiproject to participate, please add your project name to this list.

Thank you.

Update: Wikipedia:WikiProject Fiji/Archive 1/Unreferenced BLPs has been created. This list, which is updated by User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects daily, will allow your wikiproject to quickly identify unreferenced living person articles.
There maybe no or few articles on this new Unreferenced BLPs page. To increase the overall number of articles in your project with another bot, you can sign up for User:Xenobot_Mk_V#Instructions.
If you have any questions or concerns, visit User talk:DASHBot/Wikiprojects. Okip 01:01, 28 March 2010 (UTC)

Fiji articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Fiji articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

For the Wikipedia 1.0 editorial team, SelectionBot 23:01, 19 September 2010 (UTC)

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

WikiProject X is live!

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

You are invited to participate in Wiki Loves Pride!

  • What? Wiki Loves Pride, a campaign to document and photograph LGBT culture and history, including pride events
  • When? June 2015
  • How can you help?
1.) Create or improve LGBT-related articles and showcase the results of your work here
2.) Upload photographs or other media related to LGBT culture and history, including pride events, and add images to relevant Wikipedia articles; feel free to create a subpage with a gallery of your images (see examples from last year)
3.) Contribute to an LGBT-related task force at another Wikimedia project (Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons, Wikivoyage, etc.)

Or, view or update the current list of Tasks. This campaign is supported by the Wikimedia LGBT+ User Group, an officially recognized affiliate of the Wikimedia Foundation. Visit the group's page at Meta-Wiki for more information, or follow Wikimedia LGBT+ on Facebook. Remember, Wiki Loves Pride is about creating and improving LGBT-related content at Wikimedia projects, and content should have a neutral point of view. One does not need to identify as LGBT or any other gender or sexual minority to participate. This campaign is about adding accurate, reliable information to Wikipedia, plain and simple, and all are welcome!

If you have any questions, please leave a message on the campaign's main talk page.

Thanks, and happy editing!

A new newsletter directory is out!

A new Newsletter directory has been created to replace the old, out-of-date one. If your WikiProject and its taskforces have newsletters (even inactive ones), or if you know of a missing newsletter (including from sister projects like WikiSpecies), please include it in the directory! The template can be a bit tricky, so if you need help, just post the newsletter on the template's talk page and someone will add it for you.

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:24, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
