A question

Hello! Please let me know how Kirikaki platform (切り欠きホーム) is called in English.
On the right diagram, #1 platform is called Kirikaki platform (切り欠きホーム) in Japan. It is used for branch line or short train. It exists in many station. U.S. railway stations without geographical coordinates

I've used CatScan to generate a list of U.S. railway stations that lack geographical coordinates.

The articles are all marked with {{coord missing}} tags, which need to be replaced with {{coord}} tags that contain the location's latitude/longitude coordinates; or you might be able to add coordinates to an existing infobox, where appropriate. Just a note that, over the past couple of months, I've managed to clear from the list (I think) all the remaining active Amtrak stations, Metra (Chicago) stations, Metro North (New York) stations, and New Jersey Transit stations, along with a few others. I hope I haven't missed anything. I'm getting rather tired of this activity for the moment, though, so I'll leave the other U.S. commuter lines for someone else. Deor (talk) 02:39, 6 May 2009 (UTC)

(notice cross-posted at WikiProject Trains also) I'm not a trains person but have been coming across multiple articles about U.S. NRHP-listed and other train stations and renaming them, while working on disambiguation pages like Union Station (disambiguation). Flag stops?

There are many stops listed for inter-city lines in Canada where there is no station per se, but instead trains will stop to take on or drop passengers who pre-arrange. These are "flag stops", and I'm wondering whether or not they should be counted as stations as far as WP Stations is concerned. Thanks, PKT(alk) 15:02, 31 October 2010 (UTC)

Ridership

I'm creating a list of stations for SEPTA Regional Rail and want to include ridership in the table. SEPTA's business plan lists the daily boardings and alightings for each station. For the ridership column, should I use the boardings value, alightings value, or should I add them both together for a total? –Dream out loud (talk) 07:25, 6 January 2011 (UTC)

Sorry you took my comments out of context. Some people have to prioritize what time they can contribute to Wikipedia. I was about to offer help in setting up a database template, so the station articles don't have to be reedited every time the statistics change. See Spadina (TTC) for an example of how this works to give a total ridership for two lines. Secondarywaltz (talk) 01:59, 8 January 2011 (UTC)

Hoax?

I've prodded the article Iwade Railway Station because I can find no evidence of the existence of such a station. I am, however, not a resident of the UK, and if anyone more familiar with the area can supply a source relating to the supposed station, please feel free to do so and deprod it. Two(?) disused stations in Nottinghamshire

After looking at old OS maps, I suspect that the articles Gedling railway station and Gedling and Carlton railway station are actually about the same station, as I can see only one station on the specified line in the vicinity. (That the two articles are geocoded with identical sets of coordinates is my doing and will have to be changed if it turns out that these are different stations—although the coordinates in the articles were essentially identical before I came on them.) Can anyone find any further information about this, or does anyone have access to the sources listed in the latter article? If they turn out to be one and the same, I guess Gedling railway station should be redirected to the other article. Deor (talk) 11:49, 23 August 2012 (UTC)

The single source in Gedling railway station is "British Railways Pre-Grouping Atlas and Gazetteer". Assuming that this refers to

an awful lot of inference has been made from a book that doesn't give any information whatsoever about: train routes (other than what the adjacent stations were); usage for passengers or freight; relative importance; closure; or current status. About the only thing which can truly be verified by that atlas is:
Gedling railway station was a station on the Great Northern Railway
Although this atlas names the station simply as "Gedling" on map 41, section F5 and in the gazetteer (p. 64), Butt doesn't list that name, but shows that Gedling and Carlton railway station was on the Great Northern Railway; it opened 1 February 1876, closed 4 April 1960. --Redrose64 (talk) 09:19, 24 August 2012 (UTC)

Could someone (preferably someone with access to the Butt reference used in the article) take a look at Talk:Tarbrax railway station and confirm or controvert the existence of this supposed station. West Halton railway station

OK, I have another one for you folks, similar to the one immediately above. The article has one source (British Railway Atlas [1947], p. 22); but looking at old OS maps I see something labeled "West Halton Sidings" with a couple of short sidings but no sign of a passenger station (or any structures of any sort). Could you check your reference books to see what was actually here? Would it qualify as a "railway station" worthy of an article. Deor (talk) 13:41, 28 October 2012 (UTC)

Number of platforms

I've long been slightly vexed by the 'Platforms' row in the station infobox, only listing in use platforms, and thus not telling the whole story if a station is larger than that with platforms which could potentially at some stage be re-opened. I've noticed recently a couple of stations that instead have in their infobox 'Platforms: X (X in use)' which is a far better encyclopedic approach I think. Is there an official project approach to this? Grunners (talk) 10:53, 27 December 2013 (UTC)

I've always taken it to mean the number of platforms actually in use for scheduled services, as opposed to those that only get used when engineering work forces the temporary closure of the main ones. For example, at Tilehurst and Goring and Streatley there are four tracks, and each has a platform face: two on the main lines and two on the relief. Only the relief line platforms have scheduled services (stopping service Paddington-Oxford every half hour in each direction), but when there is engineering work on the relief, local trains are run main line, and so use the other two platforms instead; these trains also need to non-stop Pangbourne, which only has two plats - on the relief lines. --Redrose64 (talk) 19:50, 27 December 2013 (UTC)
There is no reason that this should not be explained by a line of text in the article, in fact I think it is better to do that. Infoboxes are meant to contain the basics and not be overstuffed. Yes you can put the numbers in the infobox, but if extended details are required do it elsewhere, as per the examples given. Secondarywaltz (talk) 19:59, 27 December 2013 (UTC)
I'd actually go for 4 in the case of Tilehurst, as I would count "active" platforms, ie ones which are in use, whether or not trains stop there regularly. This means I would agree with RedRose for Queen's Park, as the WCML platforms are blocked off. However I would count 2 at Parson Street, as while there is a third platform face against a running line, the only trains which pass are freight trains to Portishead. -mattbuck (Talk) 20:09, 27 December 2013 (UTC)
I interpret it as meaning the number of platforms currently available to passenger trains, so 4 at Tilehurst, 2 at Parson Street. I don't think there is a citable source that states which platforms trains are timetabled to use at different times in the week, so claiming that they have 2 or 3 respectively could lay an editor open to claims of Original Research! Platform usage is given in the working timetable, which despite the notice "Private and not for publication", has been online for over 2 years now, linked from the main Current timetables page on Network Rail. For example, Tilehurst is in Book PA04; in that book, platform numbers are given for Reading, Didcot, Oxford and Swindon; platforms at other stations on lines having more than two tracks (Tilehurst, Goring & Streatley, Cholsey) may be inferred by looking at the rows titled "dep-line". Consider 2L36, the 05:54 Reading to Banbury (calling at all stations except Appleford), given in columns 45 and 48. This is shown as starting from Platform 13 at Reading (row 1), running RL (Relief Line) upon departure from Reading (row 3); after Reading West Junction (row 7); and at Didcot East Junction (row 21); before using Platform 3 at Didcot (row 24). Because the code ML (Main Line) is not shown at either Tilehurst East Junction or Moreton Cutting (these being the only two points between Reading West Jc and Didcot East Jc where relief-to-main crossovers exist), this train must therefore run relief line through all stations between Tilehurst and Cholsey inclusive. Now comes the OR: can we find any trains calling at Tilehurst etc. which have ML in the relevant "dep-line" rows (Reading 3; Reading West Jn 7; Tilehurst East Jn. 10; Moreton Cutting 18; Didcot East Jn 21)? --Redrose64 (talk) 00:50, 3 January 2014 (UTC)

Help needed

I'm not sure exactly what you want, Hedwig; is the information on the image pages—engravings by John Harris (by the way, the artist who did the drawings on which the engravings were based was Andrew Nicholl), published by Wakeman in 1834—not sufficient to show that the works are not subject to copyright? As for the sources of the digital images uploaded to WP, I can't find any one place online from which they could have been taken; an image of the first one, but not the second, can be seen on the National Library of Ireland site, and an image of the second can be seen here, though that may be a copy of our image. Isn't it most likely that the suite of images of the Dublin and Kingstown Railway, all of which seem to have been originally uploaded by different accounts, were simply scanned from copies of the prints themselves—perhaps modern copies but certainly not copyrightable? No, not copyrightable. But the images still show up in the category of files without source and I couldn't find anything online either. Ww2censor had a splendid idea and searched the Irish National Library. Sources found, info updated = everything good! Leaflet for Wikiproject Stations at Wikimania 2014

Hi all,

My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal
