Kanpur Central (Hindi: कानपुर सेंट्रल, Urdu:کانپور مرکزی ) is one of the four Central Railway Stations in India, a major intercity rail and commuter rail station in city of Kanpur. The Kanpur Central Railway Station is situated on the Howrah - Delhi broad gauge route passing through Uttar Pradesh. Kanpur Central railway station holds the record for the largest route interlocking system in the world i.e.48 similar to New Delhi Railway station.Kanpur Central is busiest station of North Central Railways as the station records a traffic of more than 1.5 lakh passengers and more than 280 trains passing through here on a daily basis.

Erstwhile Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee had included Kanpur Central in '50 World-Class Railway Stations' in her budget. After figuring on the list of those railway stations that have to be made world-class, the Kanpur Central has started on a major revamp that is scheduled to take place in phases.

Though the re-modelling of the Kanpur Central began a long time back, it is being developed gradually in phases. At present, the work in this direction is going on at snail's pace but senior NCR officials are hopeful of keeping their promise of giving a new, improved look to the Kanpur Central in the days to come.[2]

The present station was built in 1928,[3] though the imposing building was completed in 1930.This building's construction is inspired by Lucknow's magnificent Charbagh NR railway station building which was built by British in 1914 but could not be constructed as same as Charbagh because it needed a huge amount of money.

Deputy chief traffic manager Shivendra Shukla informed that the pending work at the railway overbridge (presently under construction in Cantt) will be taken up speedily.

To facilitate passengers, especially the old ones, two escalators are likely to be installed. According to the proposed plan, all railway quarters on the city side will be dismantled, giving room to a large circulating area.

Three-layered underground parking for vehicles, which is not available at any other railway stations of the NCR division, has also been proposed. The entry and exit points on the city side will be made separate to ensure smooth traffic flow in and out of the station premises. Entry point for the vehicles will remain the same but a separate exit route—probably opening at Ghantaghar flyover—is also proposed. This will ensure hassle-free driving for passengers coming in and moving out of the station.

Major Features [edit]

Foot Over bridge

There are 2 foot-over bridges one called as Howrah Bridge and other named as Delhi bridge. Also the station has one underpass route connecting all the railway platforms.Since the station is enlisted in International Railway station there will be escalators in Kanpur Central soon.

Improvement in the lighting Work

Massive improvement in the lighting work has been taken up. More lighting has been provided in the sub-way have been which connects different platforms. Also the tube lights in the sub-way have been connected with inverter to ensure that there is power at the time of power roasting as well. This will also provide safety to the passengers while using the sub-way to reach a particular platform. New LED neon sign boards with station's name embedded on it are being procured and will be installed on both sides of the railway station soon. Proposal has been sent to provide facade lighting in order to give station building a beautiful look during the night hours.

Availability of Drinking Water

For tackling the water crisis, round the clock water monitoring cell has been brought in the action, wherein senior supervisors of three departments viz mechanical, civil and electrical are manning the platforms to ensure that there is a regular water supply at the platforms and also the water is available in the water tanks of various trains. The grievance cell has been made available to the passengers for getting their complaints registered related to non-availability of drinking water. The maintenance of the existing retiring room and dormitories would be taken up in the next phase. Also, a new platform surface has been made at the platform number one as cracks had developed on the older existing surface.

Passenger Facilitation Center

The passenger facilitation center would provide the passengers with all the necessary help from our railway staff under one roof only like train enquiry, retiring room/dormitory book, wheel chair booking for the handicapped passengers, sale of railway time-table and the platforms tickets. Also, all railway announcements would be made from there only. The central railway station will also have passenger amenity center in which the waiting hall and waiting room, booking office, passenger facilitation center, cloak room, luggage and parcel booking office etc. will be there on platform only

Token System for Reservation

Keeping in view the ongoing beautification drive at the Kanpur Central railway station, the railway authorities have launched its token system for passengers. The token reservation system enables the passenger to curtail on the long hours of wait for getting the reservation done.

Coach Induction Units

Four new electronic coach induction units at the platform number one of the Kanpur Central railway station, so that it becomes easy for the passengers to identify their coach when the train halts. The installation of the coach induction units is indeed a part of the ongoing beautification drive at the Kanpur railway station.
