Shikarpur means Shikar-hunting and Pur-"a lot" as per the Bible and Persian language. It is a town and a municipal board in Bulandshahr district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is also known as JAAT LAND. There is no clear evidence that who laid the foundation of Shikarpur, however it was administered and developed by a saint named Sayyed Abdullah in Lodhi period as it is believed that he was appointed by Ibrahim Lodhi as an administrator of Shikarpur.

History

Shikarpur as the name suggests was famous for hunting from Lodhi Era and it is known for its glorious culture and religious harmony. The inhabitants of Shikarpur are mainly associated with Agriculture, dairy farming, engraving, pottery and weaving from ancient times. It is also known as JAAT LAND. Now, it is becoming the producer of high quality doctors, lawyers and professors who are working inside and out side India and there is a huge craze in youngsters to join INDIAN ARMY.

Culture

Shikarpur is a beautiful example of Hinduism and Indo-Iranian culture.It is also a center of religious pilgrimage and approximately 80,000 people visit Shikarpur for different pilgrimage occasions.

Heritage

Shikarpur has rich heritage like Ganga temple, Mahadev temple, Maa kali temple, Mahadev temple Barasau, the tomb of Dada Abdullah(Dada Saheb),Shrine of Hazrat Abbas, Karbala Mosque, Imam Bara, Bazare-Shikarpur and Bara Dari(Called Bara Khamba).

Ethnic Groups

As with the spoken languages, the ethnic group composition also remains a point of debate, mainly regarding the largest and second largest ethnic groups, the Hindus and Muslims. The 70% of population of Shikarpur is Hindu, Sunni Muslims constituting 20% of the population and Shia Muslims constituting 10% of the population. The Hinduism and Twelve Shia Islam is the most popular religion among the inhabitant of Shikarpur.

Regions

Shikarpur can be divided in mainly two regions-Town, Semi Town and Rural. According to the latest census, about 60% of the population of Shikarpur lives in Town area and about 10% of population lives in Semi-Town areas.

Fauna

The wildlife of Shikarpur is composed of several animal species, including Panthers, foxes, monkeys and wild pigs. Other domestic animals of Shikarpur include sheep, goats, cattle, horses, donkeys and camels. Peacock, eagle and pigeons are also native to the wildlife of Shikarpur.

Language

Hindi and Urdu are the main languages which are spoken in Shikarpur with regional pronunciation.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[1] Shikarpur had a population of 33,130. Males constitute 52.77% of the population and females 47.22%. Shikarpur has an average literacy rate of 50.46%, lower than the national average. male literacy is 59.95%, and female literacy is 39.87%. In Shikarpur, 17.5% of the population is under 6 years of age. The literacy rate is improving sharply due to the awareness of people towards the benefits of education.

Tourism

Sai Dham, Ganga temple, Mahadev temple Barasau, Maa kaali temple, The Shrine of Dada Saheb(Dada Abdullah), Imam Baras, Karbala, Shrine of Hazrat Abbas, Karbala Mosque, Bazare-Shikarpur are famous among the tourists. Most of the tourists visit Shikarpur during Diwali, Holi, Muharram and Arbaen(Chehlum). Shikarpur is also famous for its shooting destinations among the Bollywood film makers.
