Hey, Connormah, would you mind diverting your considerable internet research skills from college football for a brief while? I need to get a definitive birth date for Gertrude Ederle, who was a medalist swimmer at the 1924 Olympics in Paris. I've got multiple reliable sources that say she was born in either 1905 or 1906 -- do you have access to Social Security death records through one of the services? Greetings Connormah. Sorry for reverting yours at Raymond Carr... but as I have yet to find a single English-language reference to his death, I'm investigating the possibility of a hoax started over at es:wp, where the "news" seems to have originated long before anything appeared in the Spanish press. Canadian date formats, etc.

Connormah, is it accurate to say that MDY-formatted dates are the mainstream practice in Canada? I am starting to clean up the 200+ articles about Canadian Olympic swimmers, and I would like to use Canadian English and related practices for them. Unfortunately, it seems to be a mixed bag in terms of the date formats presently used, and many of these articles aren't internally consistent in their date formats. Some of them don't even have infoboxes, so this is an opportunity to impose some consistency/uniformity in stylistic matters. Looking for sound advice how to proceed, so I can get it right the first time. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 19:34, 21 April 2015 (UTC)

@Dirtlawyer1: - yep, it's pretty much a mixed bag as you say. Personally I feel like the MDY format is more common in Canada (or at least where I live) but there are others who argue for the DMY format. Honestly, it's best to retain whatever style is present in the article, but I'd vouch for the MDY format personally. Connormah (talk) 19:37, 21 April 2015 (UTC)

The Brits, the Australians, and apparently most other Commonwealth countries, spell the word with two l's. Canadian English, for obvious reasons of North American proximity to the States, continues to split the difference between American and British English in a lot of ways, and it can be a challenge to keep it sorted. What do you use for a Canadian English dictionary -- is there anything definitive online? Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 19:11, 24 April 2015 (UTC)

FWIW, I tend to use "medallist", though US-based auto-correct tools are going to rapidly alter that usage. And FWIW, my experience is that common date format usage in English Canada is almost exclusively MDY. Resolute 19:18, 24 April 2015 (UTC)

In editing 60+ of the Canadian Olympic swimmer articles so far, all but two of those that used DMY were Canadians who swam for the University of Florida -- and I was responsible for inserting the DMY-format dates in those articles previously. Connormah, if you're looking for a little light relief and an opportunity to put your research skills to work, here's a potential outlet: George Larson. Larson clearly was an interesting guy with an interesting history in Canadian sports. I did some quick clean-up on the article, but it deserves better build-out and sourcing. Charles Benton year of birth

Your revert's Edit summary "Nothing states 1931 outright..." evidently ignores the preceding revert's Edit summary (mine): "...1931 already cited in Refs [1] from benton.org" AND this is why I reverted again. Kindly check for yourself, I took care that the reference includes a link to that page, "Who we are" on the Benton Foundation's website benton.org. It would be great if you (or any contributor) would find and add a citation with a complete DOB (date of birth) rather than just the year, as I didn't succeed in finding any obituary or older source giving his exact birthdate. -- Cheers, Deborahjay (talk) 14:28, 2 May 2015 (UTC)

Donald MacKeen Smith

Hi Connor, can you take a quick look at Donald MacKeen Smith article. I just added the info on the first 7 years of political career which was missing from article, so I had to change the intro a bit to show 1960 to 1970 as term dates. You had added two references to google books, but I can't figure out what there supposed to be sourcing, so can you check and see if they should be put back in the article, or where they should be added. Yes, AWB adds it automatically. And I'm not wild about the wording on the tag, because it's not completely correct - AWB identifies as "orphaned" any article with fewer that four, maybe, or five inter-encyclopedia links. So even though the articles in question are linked to one or two other articles, AWB is saying that isn't enough.

I don't think there is any agreement that holders of this office are intrinsically notable. I am am wrong, please enlighten me. If I am right, you really needto make sure the articles you;ve been writing clearly meet the GNG. I don't want to nominate them for deletion if they can be improved. Licensing of Washington State House / Senate Photos

Hi,

I saw that you added https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SKirby.jpg with a link to the Washington Secretary of State website as justification for the public domain status. I tried to add those official photos to state legislators' pages several years ago, but was told that I couldn't assume public domain and had to use OTRS. Then, when I contacted the Washington State Legislative Information Center via email regarding the OTRS, they said "Yes, the pictures can be used. We would like credit for the photos." The email correspondence never got anywhere but clearly, at least according to this correspondence, the photos may not be public domain. I would appreciate your take on this.

As such, it should only be used in cases where many editors (perhaps dozens or more) are editing the article on the same day, and it should be removed as soon as the editing goes down to a normal level again. Hi, sorry to bother but I just wanted to query you on something. A few weeks ago you replaced the infobox picture for Ernest Manning, and I really just want to find out why you think the new one is more appropriate. See, my thinking is that an infobox picture should really show the subject from a period of peak notability - in this case, from when Manning was premier as opposed to just starting out as an MLA. Furthermore, though this is a secondary argument, aesthetically I rather think the original picture looks better, as Manning is posing directly into the camera, and the corners have not been cropped out. Well, for one, I did send an email as well, and got the same response as you. The OTRS ticket seems to confirm that the Washington Archives photos are in the PD. A bit more clarification would probably be helpful, but I personally think these images should be okay for use here. Perhaps copyrighted freeuse (or whatever that's called) and not PD. What do you think about the article title? Nobody calls him "James C. Weaver" - he always went by "Jim Weaver" and all of the media reports of him always call him "Jim Weaver". When I originally created it, I named it Jim Weaver (athletics director). I looked at James Weaver and the ones listed as "James" really go by "James" (or went by James). I have moved it. I looked it up and apparently I was mistaken about "athletics director" (plural) being the more common term. His formal title was "director of athletics", but apparently athletic director is the preferred spelling when phrased conversationally. G-news says "athletic director" far more than it says the full title ("director of athletics") and almost never uses "athletics director". ConnorMah: I was the culprit on adding numerous citations to the Jean Ritchie entry for her obituary, which I believe you edited (indicated by View History) and marked up "Holy shit....WP:OVERCITE much?" I added as many citations as I could because "folk singers" has political ramifications in the US and so intended that as many voices as possible appeared when summarizing her life in obituaries. My thinking is that Wiki-readers need to know more than less. Also, the numerous citations indicate the impact of her life (albeit in death) and so help create a sense of importance. He was a 1920 U.S. Olympic swimmer of apparent Hawaiian background, with some connection to the U.S. Navy. Al Meltzer's residence and other ambiguous links

Thanks for creating the Al Meltzer article. It seems like a good contribution. I notice it because I am working with wp:DPL on eliminating ambiguous links, and the new article includes a link to Newtown, Pennsylvania, a disambiguation page. Could you possibly be more specific in your link (and perhaps footnote your source for the residence location)? I expect you know which Newtown is correct but I do not. A fun tool to use in addressing disambiguation, by the way, is the DabSolver tool. Here is DabSolver tool applied to the Al Meltzer article. All you need to do is click on the "Newtown, Pennsylvania" link that is identified as being ambiguous, then it leads you to select easily which one of the dab-page alternatives is correct. (Hopefully the correct alternative is offered.) Also by the way you are currently editor #52, with 5 total, in this report of editors who have added multiple ambiguous links recently. And that report offers "FIX" links that are similar calls to the DabSolver tool, which you could possibly use to fix more. (Actually your rank will change as I just fixed another dablink added by you, at the Bill Flick article, linking to the ice hockey option of Kitchener-Waterloo Dutchmen disambiguation page.) Bennett Campbell

Hi Connor, I noticed that you had cleaned up some political infoboxes that were quite large. Anyways, I just tracked down references to source the Bennett Campbell article, and the infobox is massive there. It's the entire length of the screen, meaning there is a huge whitespace between the external links and the bottom of the page. If you get a chance, could check this one and see if anything can be done about it, I wouldn't know where to start. Hi - I'm trying to get a date of birth for 1916 Missouri All-American Fred Williams. I was able to find this snippet for date of death but haven't been able to find a DOB. Requesting your help on a surname spelling

Connormah, it has come to my attention that you are a user who is pretty good, and loves a mystery, at finding out the surnames of people through SS death records. There is a discussion at Talk:Charles Erickson as to whether or not he and Dee Errikson are the same person. You can look at the discussion for the links as to why they are believed to be the same person, and the last name is giving us trouble.
