A medley of peeress titles, and barons

Some items to squirrel away, in case they may come in useful. In connection with comments on "Baroness vs Lady Carrickfergus"[1], it has occurred to me (sourcelessly) that, given the centuries old formula used in acts of parliament, be it enacted ... by and with the advice and consent of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and Commons, in this present Parliament assembled...[2], "Commons" has there been gender inclusive from the first parliament (1918) in which a woman was an MP, namely, Nancy Astor, Viscountess Astor, wife of Waldorf Astor, 2nd Viscount Astor; and, likewise, 'Lords' from the appointments under the Life Peerages Act 1958, and including hereditary peeresses under the Peerage Act 1963. Also, Life peers are either barons (a title deprecated for British nobles which has been replaced with Lord for all but the most formal documents since the early medieval period) or Baronesses (where female);[3] and The first woman peer to take her seat in the Lords was Baroness Swanborough (Dame Stella Isaacs, Marchioness of Reading), ahead of Baroness Wootton on 21 October 1958.[4] . Disambig.: Baron of the Exchequer (all male!); disambig.: Exchequer Court of Canada[[5]]. --Qexigator (talk) 11:34, 20 December 2013 (UTC)

WP:AN3 report done. If someone has been warned before, you don't need to warn, just report them after 4RR. Although I guess if they've only been warned once and not blocked, a warning is good. Dougweller (talk) 15:08, 22 December 2013 (UTC)

Not with your edit. I wondered if it should it be there at all? Struck me as WP:OR or at least as a personal interpretation. Although it's not actually too bad... Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi 17:09, 14 January 2014 (UTC)
I think the main issue would be self-promotion and I have addressed that. If other editors don't think the image adds value to the article, they can challenge its inclusion. I don't have strong feelings in that regard. HelenOnline 17:23, 14 January 2014 (UTC)

Theron

Hi Helen. Given your experience with the previous San naming issue and South Africa-related matters in general, would you mind weighing in on this discussion? One user suggested there that "African American" is a nonsensical politically-correct neologism, and asked that since Charlize Theron is from Africa and became a naturalized American citizen, why is she not considered an "African American" Oscar winner? Best regards, Middayexpress (talk) 15:03, 14 March 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for the helpful comments Helen; they are certainly insightful. If it's not too much trouble, could you perhaps indicate there whether you support or oppose the naming proposal? List

Hi HelenOnline. The RfC finally expired, and an administrator erroneously closed it in favor of the page move when there was clearly no consensus for it (five votes for the proposal vs. five votes against it). Despite this, one of the accounts that supported the move has attempted to edit the list in that direction. I've left a detailed explanation of the situation here. Your input there would be appreciated. Best regards, Middayexpress (talk) 15:54, 15 April 2014 (UTC)

Saw that, really surprised me. o.O HelenOnline 15:58, 15 April 2014 (UTC)
Per your recommendation and that of another user, I've started a formal move review of the RfC. Your input there would be appreciated. Whatever the outcome, I'll start drafting a proposal for a long overdue, dedicated WP:RACES policy. The new policy will gather in one place all of the various existing policy clauses on "race", as well as several new clauses. I'll link you first to the draft sub-page so that you may edit it yourself as needed before I formally submit it for evaluation. Best, Middayexpress (talk) 15:28, 21 April 2014 (UTC)

Wicca edit

I have read everywhere that Samhain is celebrated on 1 November. Do Wiccans celebrate it on the 31 October and thus on a different day from everyone else? Sbrianhicks (talk) 17:42, 21 April 2014 (UTC)

For Neopagans, the main celebration is on the evening of 31 October, but the whole holiday lasts from sunset of 31 October to sunset of 1 November (in the Northern hemisphere). HelenOnline 19:36, 21 April 2014 (UTC)
Ok. Though from my understanding, Pagans, like Jews, treat sundown as beginning a new day, correct? So the evening of the 31 is, for their purposes, the 1? Either way, shouldn't we at least add "October 31-November 1"? Thanks! Sbrianhicks (talk) 16:38, 22 April 2014 (UTC)

OER inquiry

Hi HelenOnline, I'm sending you this message because you're one of about 300 users who have recently edited an article in the umbrella category of open educational resources (OER) (or open education). In evaluating several projects we've been working on (e.g. the WIKISOO course and WikiProject Open), my colleague Pete Forsyth and I have wondered who chooses to edit OER-related articles and why. Regardless of whether you've taken the WIKISOO course yourself - and/or never even heard the term OER before - we'd be extremely grateful for your participation in this brief, anonymous survey before 27 April. No personal data is being collected. If you have any ideas or questions, please get in touch. My talk page awaits. Thanks for your support! - Sara FB (talk) 20:41, 23 April 2014 (UTC)

You recently contributed at Talk:Trial of Oscar Pistorius.

Can I ask you to look at this Talk:Trial_of_Oscar_Pistorius#Neutrality_.22Progress_of_trial.22_section querying the neutrality of the section "Progress of the Trial" and let me know 1 if you agree/disagree that it's biased and needs fixing 2 whether you propose to make any contributing edits to fix.

I've suggested May 5, when trial resumes, should be a target date to get things fixed. In my view two things at least are needed:

  • A balancing edit to record that expert witness for the prosecution testified that Reeva Steenkamp would have had time to scream and that it would have been abnormal for her not to.
  • A balancing edit for Pistorius' apology. Perhaps recording Reeva Steenkamp's mother's response in the press following?

An alternative (which I prefer) would be to strike the edit I originally reverted, so that the concluding paragraph would look like this:

On 28 March, the trial was postponed until 7 April as one of the assessors fell ill.[1][2] On 7 April, Pistorius began testifying in his own defence at the trial.[3] The cross examination of Pistorius lasted for five days, and ended on April 15th.[4]

Please reply here (I've watchlisted your page).Coat of Many Colours (talk) 09:39, 25 April 2014 (UTC)

Sorry I am not going to comment on that section and don't plan to ever edit it again as it is not worth the trouble (apart from tagging, offhand I only recall making one minor edit to it). Per WP:NOTNEWS, I would never have started such a section and believe it should go when we can summarize the final judgement. It irks me when people start such sections or articles and then ignore them when they have lost interest. HelenOnline 10:00, 25 April 2014 (UTC)
As you know I mostly support you on this, with the significant exception that I think it worth recording ongoing media coverage and my own editing in that section was confined to recording and archiving that.
However the reality is that people do make edits there and they do need to be overseen for standards. I shall copy my editing suggestions to the article Talk page. Coat of Many Colours (talk) 10:09, 25 April 2014 (UTC)
I don't have a problem with the notable media coverage section, which I don't consider news coverage per se. There is a lot wrong with Wikipedia but I can only do so much and choose to spend my time and energy more productively. HelenOnline 10:14, 25 April 2014 (UTC)

Mmusi Maimane Article

I'm a South African and i like Mmusi Maimane, I think he is eloquent, charismatic and most importantly a very smart politician , but this article I do not like, I think it has this tone that says vote for the Democratic Alliance and make Maimane Gauteng Province's premier. I feel it was not written from a neutral stand point and I also feel it was used as a campaigning and an advertising platform in this case. It also didn't come as a surprise to me to see that one of its most contributors is MaimaneForPremier  !!, someone please sort this out Bobbyshabangu (talk) 18:57, 9 May 2014 (UTC)

Lynne Brown query

Hai Helen. I would like to query your decision to include of Lynne Brown in the "Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender topics in South Africa" template. Brown is not an activist nor has Brown voiced any concerns towards issues in relation to LGBTIs in SA, Brown is our Minister of Public Enterprises, that is what she does now, that is her job - finish and klaar. Why must Brown then be apart of that series? --SanamBh (talk) 17:53, 24 June 2014 (UTC)

I included her after adding her cabinet appointment to Timeline of LGBT history in South Africa. I don't have strong feelings about it though, so remove it if you disagree. It's not my area of expertise, I am just trying to improve South Africa's LGBT coverage for Wikipedia:Wiki Loves Pride 2014. HelenOnline 18:12, 24 June 2014 (UTC)

It's not mine either, that's why I wanted to query. Regarding that timeline - would this event be noteworthy? [6]--SanamBh (talk) 18:32, 24 June 2014 (UTC)

South African slang words may be deemed offensive, taboo or controversial and thus may rarely be written about or openly discussed - how to cite reliable sources in this instance?

Hello HelenOnline

I apologise for not including reliable sources when I inserted new entries on the List of South African Slang page. I am South African and I know those terms are quite common. The problem is that those sexual practices which the slang words describe are taboo, and the activities of the South African Defence Force at that time are highly controversial, so the practices are rarely openly discussed or written about and thus the sources are severely lacking. How does one corroborate slang?

Thank you Monica — Preceding unsigned comment added by Monica Mbaraga (talkcontribs) 10:40, 18 July 2014 (UTC)

@Monica Mbaraga: I am also South African and had family and friends in the army and have never heard those terms before. That does not mean it is not true, just that those terms are not as common as you seem to think. You need to cite reliable sources period. The world will survive without it if you cannot find any. Good one! May the Coffee be with you! Most sources point to a spelling of "Reede" and not "Rheede". I haven't looked into it, but was reading up on Oudsthoorn and saw that. See these entries in the Dutch WP. A cup of Lavazza to you. Rui ''Gabriel'' Correia (talk) 10:21, 25 July 2014 (UTC)

Thanks, there are several spelling variations. I already did some research on him as he is in my family tree (related by marriage, although I cannot establish the exact line to the stamvader as he had plenty of descendants). HelenOnline 10:24, 25 July 2014 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for August 9

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Diamond War Memorial, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Winged victory. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

7 Wale Street

Is 7 Wale Street really called the Provincial Legislature Building? It does house executive departments as well (Health, Social Development and Treasury IIRC) and the name engraved on the outside is actually just "Provincial Building". - htonl (talk) 20:22, 8 August 2014 (UTC)

It is according to the WCPP website. HelenOnline 21:03, 8 August 2014 (UTC)
I have to admit I tend not to trust government websites with details such as that because they often seem to be quite slap-dash about getting it right. I see you've removed the name from the article which is probably the best solution. - htonl (talk) 21:29, 8 August 2014 (UTC)
I had a look on Google Street View. Outside the main entrance door it also says "Provincial Legislature Western Cape" in 3 languages. I would rather leave it out or change it to "Provincial Building". There is no reliable evidence for "Provincial Government Building". HelenOnline 06:42, 9 August 2014 (UTC)
Here for example it's referred to as the "Provincial Government Building". I concur that the safest option is to leave it out (referring only to "7 Wale Street") or to use the "Provincial Building" name that is visibly engraved on the facade. - htonl (talk) 18:12, 10 August 2014 (UTC)

Showme

Good day Helen,

My name is Lynette and I represent Showme Online Media.

We are a National platform of community franchises, targeting locals and tourists and attaining over 500 000 hits per month. I decided to add each of our 31 franchises to their specified region, as an external link on Wikipedia. I felt, since we have freshly updated content on a daily basis, the links would be beneficial for anyone interested in learning more about the town or region. I now see that each external link I have posted over the past week has been removed. I am asking if you could please take into consideration that we are not advertising a website, but are supplying enriched content.

You are welcome to view the site on www.showme.co.za and please get back to me at your soonest convenience.

Yours sincerely Lynette Mullins — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lynsamaze (talkcontribs) 10:20, 11 August 2014 (UTC)

Sorry Lynette, it is not an official website controlled by a recognised authority and it is clear that it is a website about a variety of subjects that primarily exists to sell products or services. It should not be included in external links per WP:ELNO as you have already been advised by myself and htonl. If you would like a third opinion, you can ask at the Teahouse which you have already been invited to. HelenOnline 10:39, 11 August 2014 (UTC)

Please remove your view of Oscar Pistorius

I think that you are obsessed and you are blindly adding in things that are inaccurate, to the detriment of Wikipedia. I think it is time to take a back seat and let other people handle it. Please remove it from your watch list. Thanks. 123.2.223.96 (talk) 17:16, 10 August 2014 (UTC)

IP warned for harassment. [8] Please do not let them drive you off. --NeilN talk to me 17:21, 10 August 2014 (UTC)
No harassment by me, only by HelenOnline. NeilN warned for harassing innocent constructive editor while trying to encourage HelenOnline to control article, pushing false view of situation. 123.2.223.96 (talk) 17:24, 10 August 2014 (UTC)
Good job for having your bully NeilN defend you. You sure are a piece of work. Goodbye Wikipedia, congratulations, you will never be accurate while you behave like this. All I did was add accurate information. Helen, hang your head in shame, in serious, severe shame. I hope that you see the level of harm you have done, even if NeilN doesn't because his head is too far up his own backside to actually check any facts. 123.2.223.96 (talk) 17:37, 10 August 2014 (UTC)
I've looked at the edits in question and Helen, I think you were quite correct to remove that text. Besides the uncited BLP issue you identified, the text also displayed, to my mind, a problematic level of anti-Nel POV. It is a pity that the IP editorhas overreacted so strongly to what was essentially a minor editing disagreement. - htonl (talk) 18:19, 10 August 2014 (UTC)
I didn't realise things were going to escalate in this manner so quick. Sorry for not getting to it sooner. You do great work here, don't pay any attention to the IP's harassment . Regards,  NQ  talk 00:48, 11 August 2014 (UTC)
No problem NQ. Thank you very much to everyone who helped. HelenOnline 05:57, 11 August 2014 (UTC)

(talk page stalker)Hi, I've been stalking since you templated me for something a while back, and wanted to say that I cannot believe the attitude of the IP editor in this astonishing little episode both here and on various other article and user Talk pages, (and drama boards). It seems that many editors have been supportive, and have shown what I think is great collegiality - if that's the right word - in showing you, Helen, what they think. I wanted to add my support to them, and you. -Roxy the dog™ (resonate) 14:23, 14 August 2014 (UTC)
Does that mean you have forgiven me? HelenOnline 14:27, 14 August 2014 (UTC)

Harold Cressy

Picking up on your comment at DYK. Would you like it if we nominate the HS High school under joint authorship? We could also include the Harry Cressy bio if you think we have enough stuff. If you are busy, then that's fine. Really enjoyed the collaboration - your copy editing and local knowledge increased the quality significantly Victuallers (talk) 09:11, 17 August 2014 (UTC).

I don't think you need to credit me, I have only done superficial edits so far. I need to take a bit of a breather from editing and get out to take some photos for WLM. I will get back to you later on. Please ask me if you have questions about anything local. HelenOnline 10:16, 17 August 2014 (UTC)

Not superficial. Good luck with WLM! If you can get some school pictures of real schools (not the fancypants ones) then that would be useful. Victuallers (talk) 11:43, 17 August 2014 (UTC)

I will. You will not believe that I was in District Six last Sunday. HelenOnline 11:44, 17 August 2014 (UTC)
Aaah ... I wasnt sure which side of the country you were. If you would like to peruse this then it should be the fourth SA article....

@Victuallers: Please rather post these requests at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject South Africa where more editors will hopefully see them. I have limited capacity unfortunately and other things I need to attend to. HelenOnline 15:43, 20 August 2014 (UTC)

Don't feel any pressure. Ive deleted the above two lines. I'm quite happy with the help you volunteered. Thanks Victuallers (talk) 15:52, 20 August 2014 (UTC)

I see you have found some time. Can you make sure that the Sinton article still has refs after the sentences that jusrtify the DYK hook or it will fail the process. One ref will be enough. The Trafalgrar article got > 3000 hits depite a poor page position. Cheers Victuallers (talk) 07:49, 21 August 2014 (UTC)

Sorry, I didn't realize the ALT hook was being used. I make mental notes while I am sleeping to make various edits, when my mind is able to process all the information better. I am also very aware it will appear on the main page shortly and that puts pressure on me to do it now. There is nothing worse than an avalanche of criticism from readers who don't even edit Wikipedia. HelenOnline 08:25, 21 August 2014 (UTC)
