Hi,

While I agree this was a rather ill-tempered AfD, I don't believe that there was any attempt made by those arguing to keep to address the reasons given for redirecting it. Indeed, almost all of the arguments to keep were very weak indeed. Would you be open to a fresh nomination without the baggage that came from the nominator on that one (and hopefully without the repeated tangential bickering)? Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward: not at work) - talk 22:10, 12 April 2011 (UTC)

No, I don't think a new AfD would do any good here - we wouldn't have that nominator, but I see no reason to think we wouldn't have essentially the same discussion all over again, as people on both sides are taking it so seriously. I can't forbid you to start a new AfD, but I don't think it would be well received. The best way to take it further, if you really want to, would be to go to WP:DRV, where "relist" is a possible outcome, and I have no objection to your doing that if you wish. JohnCD (talk) 21:36, 13 April 2011 (UTC)
Sure thing. I was going to do that, but it's always courteous to ask the closing admin first. Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward: not at work) - talk 13:07, 14 April 2011 (UTC)
Indeed. Thank you. I have commented there. JohnCD (talk) 14:57, 14 April 2011 (UTC)

Tradyo Deletion Response

Mooshidog (talk) 03:13, 15 April 2011 (UTC)

Hi JohnCD,

Thanks for your response, and I would like to change the fact that Tradyo is in the beta stage of its development, but I dont actually have access to the page. How do i gain access to that/can you grant me that?

Thanks.

Just taking out those words won't make it notable - advice on your talk page soon. JohnCD (talk) 11:50, 15 April 2011 (UTC)

Done, Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Scooter Berry (3rd nomination). Thanks for the notification. — raekyt 05:38, 15 April 2011 (UTC)

174.119.142.47 (talk) 21:14, 15 April 2011 (UTC)

Hi JohnCD,

Thank you for your comments, and we agree/understand with you. Our only concern is that now when Tradyo is googled and the wikipedia page is clicked, it shows that the page has been deleted three times and shows up in red. Is there anyway that this can be removed?

Thanks

No, there is nothing we can do, but it should drop off Google's radar fairly soon. JohnCD (talk) 09:50, 16 April 2011 (UTC)

Question

Is there any article that I created but got deleted? Komitsuki (talk) 06:19, 16 April 2011 (UTC)

There were two, both deleted WP:CSD#G7 author requests deletion: Mangeol which you blanked two minutes after you created it, and Kaneshiro Kazuki where you requested deletion because you had transferred it to Kazuki Kaneshiro. JohnCD (talk) 09:49, 16 April 2011 (UTC)
Just those? Ok, I was just curious. Those two had a title problem. You know, Korean and Japanese Romanization conventions are kinda difficult to understand. Thanks. Komitsuki (talk) 09:53, 16 April 2011 (UTC)

Deleting "Absurd numbers"

Dear JohnCD:

I congratulate you on discovering my bogus article "Absurd numbers" in less than 15 hours. It was obviously an "April Fool", linked to a bet I made with a friend, that my article will stand for at least one week: after one week I would have won my bet and immediately after I would have deleted my article myself. I love Wikipedia and the last thing I want is to damage it. You made me badly lose my bet, but I really appreciate your ability. Of course I made your job easier by chosing on purpose an absurd name, posting the article exactly on April 1st, attributing the discovery to the most famous mathematician of our times, and pretending he made his announcement during a lecture at Princeton on April 1st, 2003, that never took place. My article, though, contains some good mathematics together with a "blatant hoax" subject.

Im am sorry I lost my bet, but I am happy that Wikipedia proved once again to be very reliable.

Sincerely,

Carlo Cottica — Preceding unsigned comment added by Carlo.cottica (talkcontribs) 21:26, 1 April 2011 (UTC)

Thank you. Despite all that, I was not quite 100% sure - after all, if Wikipedia had been around 120 years ago, an article on Cantor's mathematics might well have seemed like a hoax - so I got a second opinion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Mathematics#Absurd numbers before I actually pulled the trigger. JohnCD (talk) 21:46, 1 April 2011 (UTC)

WOW, I'm flattered. That means that at least two highly qualified persons took the time to read through my little essay. I'l try to do better next April 1st. Ciao. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.12.170.81 (talk) 11:04, 2 April 2011 (UTC)

Hi, JohnCD. On Aprils 1st, together with Absurd Mumbers, I posted a page Numeri Assurdi in the Italian edition. While it took you 14h 46' to discover my "blatant hoax", my page in the Italian edition resisted 12 days and was deleted only after I posted some links in very popular mathematical pages. The administrator who canceled it is called DrZimbu, who declined to tell me what made him pull the trigger; he invited me to stop fooling around and to seriously help improving the Mathematics section, which I'll probably do. I suspect you had a role in the elimination of my Italian page. Can you confirm it? I'm asking just for the curiosity of understanding how the elimination process works. Thanks. Carlo Cottica. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Carlo.cottica (talkcontribs) 07:21, 14 April 2011 (UTC)

No, if I had known it was there, I would have tipped the Italians off, but I didn't, and I don't know how they spotted it. Generally, the different Wikipedias operate quite separately. After Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Macacalbius I raised an es:WP:CDB (Spanish AfD) to get rid of their version, but normally it wouldn't have occurred to me to look for other-language versions of a hoax - perhaps I will now. JohnCD (talk) 10:18, 14 April 2011 (UTC)
Thank-you JohnCD for answering my question. I understand it is impossible for and administrator who uncovers a bogus page to check into other langua to administratorsges' editions. Perhaps in my specific case, having used my real name which sounds quite Italian, it might have been not so difficult, but it is probabli an exception. What about a sort of automatic warning, sorted by section, to the administrators of other editions? DrZimbu was rather apologetic when I told him about your record speed, and said that in the Italian edition "they do non have enough eyes" to do a better job. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Carlo.cottica (talkcontribs) 19:39, 16 April 2011 (UTC)

Deleting of page

Dear JohnCD

Can you please tell me the reason for deleting the Solihull Blossomfield Club page. This page refers to a club website I also have built and can be contacted through. Please reinstate the page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chimpie13 (talkcontribs) 15:43, 18 April 2011 (UTC)

Your recent posting of this was deleted not by me but by user RHaworth (talk), but I can tell you why: it was a blatant advertisement: "the family friendly sports club... Blossomfield is the place for you... there has to be something at Blossomfield to meet your needs... we welcome all ages". That sort of thing is for your local newspaper, not for an encyclopedia. Stiefel Laboratories Page

Hi JohnCD,

I just wanted to thank you again for updating the Stiefel Laboratories page last week and also wanted to respond to your questions.

Your Question/Comment: The changes you asked for removed mentions of Offenbach-am-Main, of vacuum cleaners, and of the Foundation for Dermatological Research and Sulfoxyl. It's true that they are not in the references, but are they actually untrue? Why did you want them removed? As now written there is rather a gap between 1910 and the company being "resurrected" in 1947. It could do with a sentence or two to cover those years and explain why it needed to be resurrected.

My Response Question/Comment: We removed parts of the history because there are parts that are being rewritten by a copywriter and we are planning to then add many more details to the history section. That will be ready in the next month or so. We have over 160 years of history and many good things to post.

Thanks again for your help and talk to you soon.

I have certainly learned a lot from this exercise. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Zacharymia (talkcontribs) 20:57, 20 April 2011 (UTC)

Help!

I've been writing articles to address the number of redlinks associated with director Lewis Milestone. The next on my list is User:MichaelQSchmidt/Lucky Partners, but I discovered that an article titled Lucky Partners had been deleted in 2008.[1] In reading that AFD discussion, my impression is that the original article may have been about something other than the 1940 film. Since you were involved in that discussion, could you look at the deleted history and advise me in just what the deleted article was about? I would absolutely hate it if some quick-fingered editor tagged my new article with a CSD:G4 when such would either not apply. Thanks Schmidt, MICHAEL Q. 03:59, 1 May 2011 (UTC)

It was about the same film, but unreferenced, almost entirely plot summary, and a copy of this. Your version is certainly not a G4 candidate, and I've added a note to the talk page to confirm that. JohnCD (talk) 10:01, 1 May 2011 (UTC)
Cool. Big appreciations. :) Schmidt, MICHAEL Q. 10:05, 1 May 2011 (UTC)

Deleted page

Hello JohnCD:

I am writing to you because I am curious as to why you deleted the Tasca Family page. That was a true geneology and I am confused as to why it was deleted on March 10, 2011.

Thank you. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.30.4.203 (talk) 03:26, 25 April 2011 (UTC)

It was deleted because to have a Wikipedia article it is not enough to be true, subjects for articles also have to be notable, and although some members of the family such as Gheorghe Taşcă are, it does not seem that the family as such is notable enough to have its own article - see also Wikipedia is not a directory #2 (Genealogical entries). Pippa Middleton

CarrieBee has opened a new cfd at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Pippa Middleton, the original cfd page. I can't help thinking something is not as it should be here. Moonraker2 (talk) 03:43, 29 April 2011 (UTC)

No, that wasn't the way to go about it - WP:Deletion review is the place to challenge the result of an AfD. Others have explained to CarrieBee. No harm done, though - someone else raised a second AfD, which was closed as keep again. JohnCD (talk) 10:16, 2 May 2011 (UTC)

how to resurrect Dharmesh Yelande page

Hi JohnCD, I was going through the wiki pages and found that page for Dharmesh_Yelande was deleted by you because of A7. I agree with the reason mentioned but I would request you to please consider to resurrect the page after more than a year, based on the work done by the user. I am sure like me many people would like to know authentic information about the person. It is possible to add facts and verifiable content to the page.

ps. I am not linked with contributors or the person, just a user of wikipedia. Nurbs1 (talk) 00:56, 30 April 2011 (UTC)nurbs1

The deleted article was only two lines, had no references, and said little more than that he was a contestant on a reality show. To have a Wikipedia article, a person has to be notable, which means showing significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources. Read WP:Notability (people), and if you think that Yelande has now achieved enough to meet that standard, you are welcome to write a new article about him. I will give some advice on your talk page soon. JohnCD (talk) 10:05, 2 May 2011 (UTC)

thanks for the information.I will try to post soon.Nurbs1 (talk) 14:53, 2 May 2011 (UTC)nurbs1

WikiProject Film Music

I don't know the history of this campaign, but I'd be very interested in starting up this Wikipedia project again. I've recently contributed complete rewrites to articles for composers Patrick Doyle and more extensively Jerry Goldsmith. It would be nice if there were a central location from which we could discuss all the work needed for these composers and others that has yet to be done. Let me know your thoughts. Jg2904 (talk) 19:11, 1 May 2011 (UTC)

I don't know much about Wikiprojects - suggest you look at Wikipedia:WikiProject Council and Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Guide. The first thing would be to see whether you can find enough other people interested - there is a WP:WikiProject Film whose talk page might be a place to start. If you like, I can undelete the old page into your user space, but there isn't a lot there - a dozen or so people expressed interest, but nothing much ever actually happened - see Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Film/Archive_18#WikiProject_Film_Music. The key really is, are there enough others interested to make a WikiProject a going concern? Regards, JohnCD (talk) 10:28, 2 May 2011 (UTC)

Speedy deletion of a song and album that's mentioned in other articles and existing in another wiki

I contest this, this seems like a problematic speedy deletion. IMHO, you could have tried the prod or afd route for Jenny wa Gokigen Naname. Let me guess, there was only one person who reviewed this? In other words, the person who tagged this for speedy and the person who performed the speedy deletion was one and the same? Having less eyeballs go through something for a speedy can result in problematic decisions. --Bxj (talk) 09:44, 3 May 2011 (UTC)

No, a speedy normally takes two sets of eyes, and this was no exception: it was tagged with WP:CSD#A9 by Eeekster (talk), who notified you on your talk page, and (several hours later) I reviewed it, saw that the band and composer were indeed redlinks and that the only assertion of importance was that it had been covered by other bands, and deleted it. Being mentioned in other articles and existing on :ja are not sufficient reasons for keeping it. I think you would do better first to make an article that can establish notability for the band, per WP:NALBUMS: "In general, if the musician or ensemble is notable, and if the album in question has been mentioned in multiple reliable sources, then their officially released albums may have sufficient notability to have individual articles on Wikipedia" (my emphasis). JohnCD (talk) 10:07, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
I'm glad to hear two sets of eyes passed as a procedure and I'm sorry I made an incorrect guess. I've had a bitter experience in the past with an admin who have speedily deleted an untagged disambiguation page all on his own (he has since been kicked off the admin role for an unrelated issue, so it's not a problem anymore). I think whether being covered multiple times and having a ja: article is not sufficient grounds for statement of importance or significance is debatable (I even mentioned the record label which seemed legit). However I understand that as a procedure you'd prefer to see the artist article created first before the album article.--Bxj (talk) 14:00, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
Mention in other articles, or other WPs, isn't the "significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources" required for notability, or IMO (though it's more debatable) enough for the lower standard of "assertion of importance" required to avoid speedy deletion. JohnCD (talk) 16:59, 3 May 2011 (UTC)

Please look,

I wrote http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Administrator_intervention_against_vandalism HERE (Administrator Interention Against Vandalism] cuz they report about me. But when i wrote my comment also, the person who report edit my post and delete it some seconds later, i go to write again and i see in history this: (cur | prev) 16:29, 3 May 2011 Mephistophelian (talk | contribs) m (2,824 bytes) (Reverted 1 edit by Meliniki (talk) identified as vandalism to last revision by HBC AIV helperbot7. Anyway, this was my comment:

Not vandalism, other people make propaganda using wikipedia, very shame! Some people talk about official censuses but in other topics they don't use official censuses etc example is the same users Future Perfect at Sunrise and MacedonianBoy , look at: Here and Here, two same topics, but in the one they claim map to stay without to be official data of the state and in the other they report to delete the map cuz is not official data of the state (propaganda using wiki? shame) - (investigate for a network of paid propaganda)--Meliniki (talk) 16:35, 3 May 2011 (UTC)

No. That was full of PR-speak: "measurable and memorable engagement... strategically challenging, creatively rewarding... breakthrough creative work... prestigious... " - a blatant advertisement, not an encyclopedia article. Anything like that is deleted on sight: Wikipedia is not for advertising or promotion of any kind. I will provide advice on your talk page on how to proceed if you want to try to make an encyclopedia article about this company (if it is notable enough to have one), but I may not have time until tomorrow: start by reading Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations, Wikipedia:Your first article and WP:PEACOCK. SUDAN NOW deletion

I apologize for not having a handle on this. Do SUDAN NOW ads in the NY Times and Washington Post asking President Obama and world leaders to take action for Sudan meet the notability factor? The convergence of major U.S. human rights/anti-genocide groups fighting for the lives and rights of people from another country strikes me as notable. --Jespah (talk) 20:21, 6 May 2011 (UTC)

No, they don't, because they are not independent. Wikipedia notability is not a matter of opinion but has to be demonstrated by showing "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." Significant means more than just listing-type mentions; reliable excludes Myspace, Facebook, blogs, places where anyone can post anything; independent excludes the subject's own website, affiliated ones, and anything based on advertisements or press releases. The test is, have people independent of the subject found it important and significant enough to write substantial comment about? JohnCD (talk) 20:30, 6 May 2011 (UTC)
Got it! Thank you! --Jespah (talk) 20:40, 6 May 2011 (UTC)
How would you say SUDAN NOW page differs from The Enough Project Wiki page? Aare you the person who deleted SUDAN NOW PAGE? --Jespah (talk) 21:37, 6 May 2011 (UTC)
Yes, I am, as you can see from the deletion log. Reviewing it for deletion is what caused me to leave the note on your talk page.
SUDAN NOW had only a single reference, a HuffPost article by somebody who appears to be connected with the campaign, or at best to be repeating its launch announcement. The Enough Project page has many more references, but since you ask I doubt whether it would withstand a challenge on notability grounds. At a quick look, #1, 2 are blank when I click on them, 3 - 6 are the project's own website, 7 - 10 don't mention "Enough project", 11 gives the project's director of communications as a contact, so is not independent. I see no significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources there. JohnCD (talk) 22:27, 6 May 2011 (UTC)
The issues of notability, promotional tone, POV-pushing and reliable sourcing on this family of subjects have been raised and discussed at length several times, most voluminously perhaps here and here. Whether they have been productive is hard to say, and any illumination you might be able to provide, JohnCD, would be welcome. Thanks. JohnInDC (talk) 22:44, 6 May 2011 (UTC)
sorry, illumination on what? I will correct those references--Jespah (talk) 22:56, 6 May 2011 (UTC)
It has been very difficult conveying to you the notion that Wikipedia is not a platform for advancing particular causes or for burnishing the reputations of people or organizations that may be involved in those causes. Your comments on the (now deleted) Sudan Now page (protesting deletion in essence because protecting human rights in Africa is important and worthwhile) revealed that despite months and pages of discussion, you still do not grasp the basic Wikipedia notions of notability, verifiability and neutral point of view. That was the illumination I was hoping for. JohnCD, I apologize for hijacking your Talk page. If you have something to add, please do; otherwise Jespah and I will move this discussion elsewhere. Thanks. JohnInDC (talk) 00:28, 7 May 2011 (UTC)

Administrator Arrogance

I came to find out more about Archibald Roberts and there was nothing on Wikipedia about it. You have deleted my new page which I started. It is the height of arrogance to suppose that you know more about the subject than I do. I provided the link that shows the importance of the subject and wrote what I had time to write. It is your job to follow that link and see that I am correct. This is not a matter of difference of opinion. It is a matter of your ignorance and arrogance.

I also protested speedy deletion. Your other deletions should be reviewed for a similar pattern. My money says that you should be removed as an administrator. I will do what I can to achieve that result. You might want to cut your losses and restore the article.Trojancowboy (talk) 22:10, 7 May 2011 (UTC)

You want "to put my learner management system on the map" and what you wrote was marketing PR-speak: "staffed by skilled and experienced people... friendly and informal manner... staff have been carefully selected... professional but pleasant relationship... " I'm sorry, but that is not an encyclopedia article, it is an advertisement and is absolutely not what Wikipedia is for - we do not host advertising or promotion of any kind. Even if written in neutral terms, we are not here to help put anything on the map. I will give some more advice on your talk page soon. JohnCD (talk) 17:12, 10 May 2011 (UTC)

Hi. I see you deleted this template with the reason "redundant/unused". However, it seems to be used by a number of articles which are now appearing as Speedy Deletion candidates because they transclude it. They include Penny Webster, Kenneth Wang, John Boscawen, Hilary Calvert, Deborah Coddington, Roger Douglas, and a number of others -- Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 16:58, 10 May 2011 (UTC)

Yes, I noticed that - in fact, the reason they were appearing as speedy candidates was that they transcluded it while it was speedy-tagged, I think when the categories catch up they will drop off CAT:CSD. But it needs to be sorted, and I have sent a message here to the guy who asked for it to be deleted as a duplicate. I'll watch it and undelete unless he has a plan to replace it with the alternative one. JohnCD (talk) 17:07, 10 May 2011 (UTC)
He doesn't seem to be online - I have restored the template and removed the db tag from it, so all those Kiwi MPs should drop out of CAT:CSD soon. JohnCD (talk) 17:19, 10 May 2011 (UTC)

I added some references. Do you think it is now OK.

Thank you so much for your patience. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Teresa.jose (talkcontribs) 15:09, 11 May 2011 (UTC)

Kindly undelete Amir of Bimlipatnam —Preceding unsigned comment added by 14.96.212.79 (talk) 17:54, 11 May 2011 (UTC)

No. You have been told at WP:REFUND#amir of bimlipatnam what you need to do: read Wikipedia:Notability and Wikipedia:Notability (people) so as to understand the issues involved, and then approach user Mandsford (talk), the administrator who closed the deletion debate Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Amir of Bimlipatnam. Then, if you are not satisfied, go to WP:Deletion review. JohnCD (talk) 18:04, 11 May 2011 (UTC)

Thanks...

for cleaning up and for your more knowledgeable response. Drmies (talk) 20:17, 11 May 2011 (UTC)

No problem. That's an interesting page - it's only meant for restoring contested PRODs, but nobody reads the instructions and every kind of thing turns up. With luck it helps some newbies over the learning curve. JohnCD (talk) 22:17, 11 May 2011 (UTC)
Ha, it was also the first time I saw that page, which is why I quoted one of the guidelines. You learn something new every day! Drmies (talk) 23:28, 11 May 2011 (UTC)

amir of bimlipatnam

Mandsford is not online can you take up this issue JohnCD —Preceding unsigned comment added by 14.96.212.79 (talk) 18:19, 11 May 2011 (UTC) JohnCD I have read WP-Notablility and WP-Notability(People) now since Mansford is not around can you please take up this matter and close it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Altaf shaik (talkcontribs) 18:49, 11 May 2011 (UTC)

What you would be asking Mandsford to do is to change the decision of Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Amir of Bimlipatnam. Since all those who took part said delete, I do not think he would do that, and I will certainly not do it for him. If you do not want to wait for him, you can go straight to WP:Deletion review, though it would be courteous to let him know that you are doing that. Two points to think about before you do that:
  • It is not clear to me whether the article is about the present Amir, as the title suggests, or about the family of the Amirs. If it about the family, a better title might be "Amirs of Bimlipatnam".
  • Sources are needed for two purposes: WP:Verifiability, to confirm that what an article says is true, and WP:Notability, to establish that the subject is of enough general interest for an encyclopedia article, the test being whether people independent of the subject have thought it important enough to write about. The museum which the article cites as a source may be enough for verifiability, but more independent sources are needed for notability.
If you take this to WP:Deletion review, I suggest you do not copy there all the material you posted at WP:REFUND. It will be enough to provide a link to it, which you can do by writing [[Wikipedia:Requests for undeletion/Amir of Bimlipatnam]] (with two square brackets each side). That will produce a link like this: Wikipedia:Requests for undeletion/Amir of Bimlipatnam. If you need help to post it at DRV, ask below here. JohnCD (talk) 20:04, 11 May 2011 (UTC)

It appears that the title should have been Amirs of Bimlipatnam as it denotes the history of present and previous Amirs. JohnCD I will appreciate if you help me post it at DRV —Preceding unsigned comment added by Altaf shaik (talkcontribs) 03:23, 12 May 2011 (UTC)

I have filed a DRV at Wikipedia:Deletion review/Log/2011 May 12. If there are not enough indpendent sources for a separate article about the Amirs, perhaps a section about them could be included in the article Bheemunipatnam - I believe that is the same town? JohnCD (talk) 09:44, 12 May 2011 (UTC)

Thanks. When is the article likely to be restored. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 14.96.76.217 (talk) 14:27, 12 May 2011 (UTC) Yes, it is the same town and you may proceed however way you may feel like by restoring the article as an encyclopedia material and history of notable Amirs of Bheemunipatnam —Preceding unsigned comment added by Altaf shaik (talkcontribs) 14:46, 12 May 2011 (UTC)

Discussions at DRV normally last seven days. I have to say that, unless there are more independent references to show notability, I do not think it likely that the article will be restored; but perhaps there will be agreement to add something about the Amirs to the town's article. RE: Hawkeye81 help request for correction to Wikipedia page on Lauritzen Corporation

JohnCD, thank you for your recommendation. Hawkeye81 (talk) 16:17, 13 May 2011 (UTC)

Thank you

For reinstating the page. I really don't know the varied ways around wiki anymore. And, I don't like muddying up something when I know editors try very hard to keep everything looking good and verifying information.

While I do have information, I'm not sure what gives solid citation for wiki. I can try within the next few days to give you what I have, but, would prefer some guidelines so as not to waste all of our time. My email is imbethers()aim()com and probably the easiest way to continue this discussion. :) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.226.148.19 (talk) 20:59, 13 May 2011 (UTC)

What article are you referring to? I'm sorry I can't work it out, but I deal with quite a few, and there is no clue in this IP address's contributions. For general advice, see WP:Notability and WP:Reliable sources. Let me know the article name here - I would rather discuss things here on-wiki than by email. JohnCD (talk) 22:05, 15 May 2011 (UTC)

DRV request

  • Thank you for taking care of that, John. I've not participated at all in administrator duties, and haven't visited the AfD Forum at all in more than a month, because of a family tragedy. It took awhile for me even to get back on Wikipedia at all after April 7, and I've simply been working on editing a handful of articles. Through no fault of anyone here, I've lost almost all interest in Wikipedia. At some point, I may get back into this, but for now, no. Thanks again. Mandsford 02:19, 14 May 2011 (UTC)
No problem. Sorry to hear of your tragedy. I have been noticing a steady turnover of admins, and after a year and a half I can sometimes feel symptoms of incipient burn-out myself. Probably a solid break is a good idea - it's hard to work at half speed. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 22:09, 15 May 2011 (UTC)

Female American Movie Actors By Birth Year

What didn't you like about my list? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Paulmec (talkcontribs) 18:51, 16 May 2011 (UTC)

Dave, I see you have re-posted the article. If an article has been deleted, it is normally best not to do that unless you have done something to address the reason for deletion. In this case, as explained twice above, it seemed to be repeating an existing article. I suggest that you "move" it - change its title - to something like "List of x x x by birth date", if that is the point of it, to make clear that it is more than just a repeat of List of American film actresses, and also explain either on the talk page or in a lead section what is the rationale for the list.

I agree that, given the extra information in it, it is not a candidate for WP:CSD#A10, but there are problems with it. Please read, if you have not already read, the important policy WP:Verifiability, which can be summarised as "any material challenged or likely to be challenged must be attributed to a reliable, published source." This is particularly important forinformation about living persons - also read WP:BLP.

What is your source for the birth dates and birthplaces you cite? This is not as simple a question as it sounds, especially dates of birth for ladies in the public eye, where there are not infrequently conflicting versions around.

What is your source for the statement that the films you name are the "most famous"? If it is your own opinion, that is original research, and not allowed.

As well as the other links I have given you, read WP:Manual of Style (stand-alone lists) and WP:Your first article

Regards, JohnCD (talk) 20:07, 16 May 2011 (UTC)

Thanks John, I can now address these concerns.

Dave

Yossi Sheffi article

I'm sorry to bother you again so soon with a request for your input, but if you could please review an article I posted at my sub-page (".../Yossi Sheffi") I would be very grateful. Please note that I have listed a category for the article but commented it out (per your recent suggestion) since the article is not yet in the mainspace. Please let me know if I did it correctly. As always, your help and time are greatly appreciated!Michael Leeman (talk) 16:57, 10 May 2011 (UTC)

Yes, you did the commenting-out right. Article looks OK to me, though as I said I am not an expert - you could look at WP:BETTER and the WP:Good Article standards for tips, and you can always ask for comments at WP:Requests for Feedback, if you like. No reason IMO why you shouldn't move this one to the mainspace yourself. Use the "Move" tab; it will leave a redirect where the article used to be, which you can tag with {{db-r3}} to get it deleted. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 22:12, 11 May 2011 (UTC)
Thank you very much! I do have a question, though: if I move it myself the article will appear with a "This is a new unreviewed article" template at the top of the page (even though you have already reviewed it). Is that correct? If so, I'm wondering if it would be possible for you to move the article into the mainspace and then remove the template. Or perhaps I could move it myself and then ask you to please remove the template afterwards. Can you please let me know what you think is best? Thanks!Michael Leeman (talk) 16:30, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
No, go ahead and move it yourself. As well as the "New unreviewed article" tag, it will be marked with a yellow stripe as "unpatrolled" in the list of new articles, and that will attract one of the (unofficial) New Page Patrol to look at it, who will take off the tag and add "maintenance templates" if he thinks it needs improvement. JohnCD (talk) 22:12, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
Thank you once again for your help! I moved the article into the mainspace. I want you to know how much I appreciate your taking the time to look over my article and get back to me with answers to my questions. I am very grateful.Michael Leeman (talk) 22:58, 18 May 2011 (UTC)

Spanish Point Airfield

On April 10 you deleted "Spanish Point Airfield" on grounds of lack of notability. I agree with that. I like to have the information out of this article placed in "my personal space". Reason is that I like to add (some of) the information to the article Miltown Malbay. Is that possible? I hope to hear soon! Night of the Big Wind (talk) 04:13, 17 May 2011 (UTC) Because the discussion went sour and personal, I have changed my nickname since. I was the Eddy involved.

I have put it temporarily into my user space at User:JohnCD/Spanish Point Airfield so you can copy what you need from there. Don't modify the userfied article, and let me know when you have done with it. There is a point about attribution we need to watch: the history (which is there with it) shows that the content was provided by you and a couple of others. If you copy into another Wikipedia article any of the content provided by other users, you need (because of the license terms) to attribute it to them. It would be enough to use an edit summary like "add content contributed to deleted article Spanish Point Airfield by User:XYZ", but it's important to do that. JohnCD (talk) 20:24, 17 May 2011 (UTC)
Thanks a lot. I have added the useable information to Milltown Malbay. See the result: here. Hope it is okay to you now. Night of the Big Wind (talk) 20:47, 17 May 2011 (UTC)

User:Steven Zhang/harassment-awareness

Could you move {{User:Steven Zhang/harassment-awareness}} to my userspace? Thanks. --Tothwolf (talk) 00:24, 20 May 2011 (UTC)

Done to User:Tothwolf/harassment-awareness, also its /doc to User:Tothwolf/harassment-awareness/doc. It was transcluded by a lot of pages - see list - and was also pointed to by a redirect at User:Steve_Crossin/harassment-awareness which in turn was transcluded by these pages. I'm not sure how all this worked or whether I did the right thing to rename these pages - let me know if you need me to do any more. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 14:47, 20 May 2011 (UTC)
Thanks, I'll take care of updating the transclusions. I previously fixed many of them when the MediaWiki interface was changed which broke the original template. --Tothwolf (talk) 22:31, 20 May 2011 (UTC)

Hi JohnCD! You wrote:

I hope you don't mind, I have added The Divine Love of Rahasa Lila to your AfD - same author, all the same remarks apply, it seems a waste of time to have two AfDs.

No problem at all! I would have included it myself, but my AfD-fu skillz are charitably described as rudimentary at best. In related news, perhaps we could ask both books' author his opinion of the recent Kate and Wills nuptuals, as it appears he was invited. Perhaps he could compare notes with Joe Sixlegs?
--Shirt58 (talk) 10:50, 22 May 2011 (UTC)

Yes, I saw that, I'm amazed how poor the Indian media's fact-checking is: that video shows his "invitation card", which is (I'm not surprised to see) different from the real one. He's certainly persistent - up to his 25th sock, and I have proposed at AN a formal site ban, so that there will be no doubt any more articles can be deleted at sight without more AfDs. FYI

Hello JohnCD. I noticed the message that you added to Sullyd's talk page. A couple of us have been working with admin Ponyo as we come across these hoax articles. He seems to be offline at the moment so I wanted to give you this link User talk:Ponyo#Here are a few new hoax articles so that you can see the evidence that I gave about today's hoax articles. In a thread just above this we discuss whether these are being created by socks of Harvey Carter or Jake Picasso. Even if it is someone else there has been a strong uptick in these over the last week or so. Thus, I appreciate your time and effort in working with these. Cheers. MarnetteD | Talk 19:21, 22 May 2011 (UTC)

I see that you have been a busy bee taking care of all of these including the IP so let me just again say thanks for your efforts in this situation. MarnetteD | Talk 20:05, 22 May 2011 (UTC)
I would have replied here sooner but, as you say, I've been busy sorting it out. Both users blocked, IP blocked 24 hr, and I've raised an SPI here to see whether it's JP. I'm glad you were onto these: I was about to tag the Hamilton article with G3, because I don;t like to delete even blatant hoaxes without a second pair of eyes, but you provided that. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 20:11, 22 May 2011 (UTC)

Avinash Patra

I blocked yet another sockpuppet, User:Satyasairam, and yet another variation of the article name just a few minutes ago. The ban discussion was archived, but since nobody objected, I think consensus is that he is banned. -- Gogo Dodo (talk) 07:34, 23 May 2011 (UTC)

He doesn't give up, does he? See three items above for a comparison of his "invitation" to The Wedding with a real invitation card. For form's sake, I have unarchived the AN discussion and asked for someone to close it. JohnCD (talk) 10:15, 23 May 2011 (UTC)
I just looked and that's really disappointing. Did Asian News International not notice that the grammar of the invite was incorrect "The Chamberlain is command by"? Sounds like a bad Nigerian 419 spam. Never mind the other problems with the "invite". At least is was lead by "claims to have been", but still, bleah... -- Gogo Dodo (talk) 16:55, 23 May 2011 (UTC)
Yes, but I would have expected better fact-checking from the Times of India, which doesn't say "claimed", but reports it as fact. Look how widely he has managed to spread it - he deserves a degree in self-publicity. JohnCD (talk) 19:09, 23 May 2011 (UTC)
Amazing, though I see that they are all pretty much the same content. Looks like a syndication thing. At least somebody noticed that it was fake, too.

The Integralia wishes to inform you that you have made the gravest of mistakes. Bad Luck End Met (talk) 07:21, 24 May 2011 (UTC)

The page I deleted said nothing at all. We don't do "watch this space" pages: you need as a minimum to say what your subject is and to give some credible reason why it is important or significant, and if the article is to be kept you will have to establish notability by giving references to significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources. Read WP:Your first article for advice, and if you are connected with the subject read WP:COI. JohnCD (talk) 08:26, 24 May 2011 (UTC)

Deletion of page Seeks

Hi there. Why delete this page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seeks exactly, I did read A7, I know what it means. What more can be done whereas other similar software do not stress even more and maintain page with less fair discussion of software features and architecture ? This software is being used by at least a large traffic website (Ubuntu France), and has reached the same level as other similar software, Yacy, and Faroo. Is there a way to contest deletion ? I truely believe this is unfair, as the matter of decentralized search is important. Note also that Wikipedia France has accepted a page about this search engine. Sincerely, Beniz (talk) 06:43, 25 May 2011 (UTC)

I see that Lifebaka (talk), the admin who deleted the most recent version, has userfied it for you to work on and given you some advice. Neither presence in another language Wikipedia nor comparison with other articles counts for much: what you have to establish is notability, which requires showing significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources. The test is, have people independent of the subject thought it important and significant enough to write substantial comment about? JohnCD (talk) 17:11, 11 June 2011 (UTC)

Yossi Sheffi article

Dear JohnCD,

I just have two quick questions. Recently you looked over my article on Yossi Sheffi and suggested that I move it to the mainspace, which I did. It looks like another administrator (Bearcat) subsequently reviewed the article and made a few helpful changes. Since the article has now been reviewed, should the "this is a new, unreviewed article" template be removed from the top of the page? And should I restore the categories? It looks like they have been removed. Thanks! Sorry for all the questions.Michael Leeman (talk) 13:23, 2 June 2011 (UTC)

oddsfutures wiki

Hi there JohnCD,

our oddsfutures wiki has been "speedily deleted"

Perhaps our wiki is un-encyclopedic, (and i have probably written it with a bit of an over enthusiastic bias..!!!!)

Could we put it back in the sandbox for editing over the next while.

There is nothing in the wiki that is untrue and i can cite numerous publications and newpaper articles and other sources.

Anyway let me know feel free to leave it at a single decriptive sentence and I'll try to get other information to you to vaildatef the sentence..

Hand on heart there is nothing there that is not true although maybe the language is a bit marketing oriented.

Anyway thanks for reviewing

regards,

(MarcButterly (talk) 22:58, 3 June 2011 (UTC))

Sorry for delay in replying - I have been away. Actually, I don't know why you asked me - if you click on the red-link Oddsfutures it will show you the deletion log - who deleted the page, and why. Looking at the deleted versions, the first was certainly too promotional - Wikipedia is not for promotion of any kind and is very resistant to anything that seems like that. The second version was basic but gave no indication of why the subject was important or significant enough to have an encyclopedia article. I will give some advice on your talk page soon. JohnCD (talk) 18:52, 11 June 2011 (UTC)

Deleted Page - Maxwelltown Thistle Fc

Hi, Trying to understand why our page has been deleted. We are a bonafide football club who have been in existence on and off since the 1920s. Please can you explain what was wrong with the page.

Regards Steve Todd Secrerary Maxwelltownn Thistle FC — Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.241.2.198 (talk) 21:02, 10 June 2011 (UTC)

I have restored the page Maxwelltown Thistle FC because it was deleted under the proposed deletion process, which is only for uncontroversial deletions. However, I will inform user Jmorrison230582 (talk), who proposed it, and he may decide to nominate it under the Articles for deletion process, which would start a debate lasting seven days. The point is that just being a bona-fide football club is not enough for a Wikipedia article: the requirement is called notability, and is not a matter of opinion but has to be demonstrated by showing "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." The test is, have people independent of the subject thought it important enough to write substantial comment about? See WP:FAQ/Organizations and WP:Notability (organizations and companies for more information. JohnCD (talk) 17:35, 11 June 2011 (UTC)

Welcome back!

Hope you had a good wikibreak... if you have some time, would you be willing to help me out with WP:AN/I#WikiHounding / Article ownership issues / Possible IP socks.? Thanks. Basically what happened was I removed a bit of OR from their articles (dipping my toe in the water, as it were, before a major rewrite) and their IPsocks went ballistic on the articles listed on my user page. Someone else decided to put the articles up on AfD and all of a sudden I'm a communist. :) XXX antiuser eh? 16:15, 11 June 2011 (UTC)
Ack. Is there nothing that can be done about the relentless wikihounding? I might as well give up on WP if every time I post this guy starts going off on me. XXX antiuser eh? 13:59, 13 June 2011 (UTC)
Ignore it. Make your point and move on - don't feel a need to reply to everything he says. The closing admin (for whom I feel considerable sympathy) will be able to distinguish relevant points from ranting. JohnCD (talk) 18:37, 13 June 2011 (UTC)
I've been ignoring them... you'll notice that since I said I was withdrawing from the conversation at the last ANI report I haven't replied to them and only posted back to ANI to report more sock activity. The problem is they seem to be stalking me, they've already gone through the list of articles on my user page and vandalised them, so now I'm wary of editing other stuff that they might do it again. Thanks for the help, anyway. XXX antiuser eh? 18:43, 13 June 2011 (UTC)

This page has now been deleted four times. It's not enough to be "linked with" famous people or to be "the next big thing"; to have a Wikipedia article someone needs actually to have arrived so that the article can demonstrate notability by showing significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources. The notice on your talk page tells you why. The article just said he is a teenage actor who has had a part as an extra. Make sure that it is neutral in tone (anything that looks like promotion will get speedily deleted) and that you cite references to show significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources. If your signature implies that you are editing on his behalf, read the guideline on WP:Conflict of interest. JohnCD (talk) 22:17, 13 June 2011 (UTC)

VIRUS

I would get back to you with more reference on Actor Shankar's film VIRUS. Removing it evenafter a reference link was updated, is not ethical Rajeshbieee (talk) 05:17, 13 June 2011 (UTC)

All that reference had is two sentences from the director. That is not nearly enough to meet the notability requirement for significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject. More on your talk page soon. JohnCD (talk) 09:04, 13 June 2011 (UTC)

Rajeshbieee (talk) 22:27, 13 June 2011 (UTC) I understand John. Thank You. But you see, it was a low budget film and no marketing was done. But It was censored, believe me. Anyhow, i would get reliable details of the same. It is my responsibility..

Rajeshbieee (talk) 20:21, 15 June 2011 (UTC) John, Why can't you upload VIRUS details back, till i provide necessary resources ?

I have userfied it for you - moved it into a user sub-page where you can work on it - at User:Rajeshbieee/Virus (Shankar film). It doesn't belong in the article space until (a) there are reliable sources to verify what it says, and (b) there are sources showing enough independent comment to satisfy WP:Notability (films). If it was a low budget film with no marketing and never released, I think it is very unlikely that you can manage (b), but see what you can do. There are a lot of films called "Virus", see Virus (film), so if it does become an article it will need a title like "Virus (2009 film) or whatever its date was. JohnCD (talk) 20:57, 15 June 2011 (UTC)

Rajeshbieee (talk) 21:56, 15 June 2011 (UTC) John, As you said, the film is unlikely to have a theatrical release, eventhough it was censored in 2008. But we have to add it under Shankar's filmography as it is his product. A film is a film irrespective of its release or box-office fate. A film is considered as a "film" only when it get released in theatres, i know that, but the work should not get unnoticed and wikipedia has the responsibility to upload it with proper resources( i would get that to you ).

You could add a couple of lines about it to Shankar's article, using thehindu.com as a source, but you shouldn't say any more than that source does - your personal knowledge, for instance, doesn't count because it is original research; and the film can't have an article of its own unless it satisfies WP:NF. Tolerance

Just a note. You have shown tolerance in extremis today. I would have got ratty with the stuff here much before you did. - Sitush (talk) 23:02, 13 June 2011 (UTC)

Thanks - it was a busy day, but in this job one either keeps calm or goes mad! JohnCD (talk) 20:12, 15 June 2011 (UTC)

Sorry, I should have explained that better. The user's request for it to be deleted was on my talk page: "I agree I've do it, but I'd bask that idea to waiting period until I can learn to handle deletions.", a reply for a request for the user to tag this page and another for speedy deletion. My attempts to discuss these pages with the user have been hampered with communication issues. --Anthem 15:32, 14 June 2011 (UTC)

  • Thanks. The situation Anthem described above was reasonable, but the message from 1007D wasn't absolutely clear, so I shall still do what I planned - ask 1007D directly whether he wants his page deleted. JohnCD (talk) 18:29, 14 June 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for the work keeping that vandal off my page. He's left something since you last reverted, but I appreciate the work. This actually is the apparent work of an individual who has made similar comments off Wikipedia in the past, so I did need to see it. I am mainly amazed that this reached anybody's attention; thanks. Edwin Herdman (talk) 09:52, 15 June 2011 (UTC)

No worries - if you would like it semi-protected again, just ask. JohnCD (talk) 20:12, 15 June 2011 (UTC)

Not a problem. I was hesitant at using the db-test template, though I didn't know what else to use. Too bad there's no CSD reason for WP:NFT.  :) The Mark of the Beast (talk) 06:04, 16 June 2011 (UTC)

Yes, several times people (including me) have suggested a speedy for "blatantly NFT", but it always gets turned down. "db-hoax" is sometimes appropriate, but only if there seems to be an attempt to deceive; for the usual new word, religion, drinking game etc. there's nothing for it but PROD. LESLIE KENTON, author

Re: LESLIE KENTON You deleted the article on Leslie Kenton, immediately after I entered the preliminary biographic information. I am concerned that Wiki editors are too quick to interject / interfere with topics in which they have no special expertise.

LESLIE KENTON is the widely published author and daughter of "famed jazz great, STAN KENTON." Ms. Kenton published a 2010 memoir describing her incestuous relationship with her celebrity father.

The article on LESLIE KENTON will be linked back to the article on STAN KENTON.

You should not "immediately" delete article content, before there is sufficient time make the links to sources. Lastly, I ask that you follow the policy guidelines of Wikipedia and present yourself as being helpful to newcomers. Wikipedia has more content than editors. Wiki encourages as much help as it can get; from knowledgeable potential editors. I advise that you limit your editorial actions to subjects in which you hold a special expertise. Thank you. RE: LESLIE KENTON, author.

Kindly restore the deleted stub article on LESLIE KENTON. Ms. Kenton, daughter of famed jazz great, Stan Kenton, has published more than 30 books on health, beauty and well being.

Her recent book, entitled LOVE AFFAIR was published by Random House in 2010. It documents her incestuous account with her celebrity father.

Restore the page. Give editors time to construct the page before taking premature editorial action. Ray Oliver, Esq. Ray Oliver, Esq. 18:23, 13 June 2011 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by RAYOLIVERESQ (talkcontribs)

I have userfied the article for you to User:RAYOLIVERESQ/Leslie Kenton where you can work on it. Note that just being related to someone famous does not give notability in Wikipedia terms, nor does having written some books. What you have to show is "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." Significant means more than just listing-type mentions; reliable excludes Myspace, Facebook, blogs, places where anyone can post anything; independent excludes the subject's own website, affiliated ones like her publishers, and anything based on press releases. See also WP:Notability (people).
You will find good advice in WP:Your first article; also, please read carefully Wikipedia's policy on WP:Biographies of living persons, which we take very seriously. JohnCD (talk) 19:25, 13 June 2011 (UTC)

I am aware that mere relationship to a famous person is not sufficient notoriety for an article. LESLIE KENTON has published 35 books on beauty, health and well being. She published her memoir, LOVE AFFAIR in 2010 by RANDOM HOUSE, documenting an incestuous affair with her jazz great, celebrity father STAN KENTON. *I stood next to Stan Kenton during his recording of the musically complex composition, The Beatitudes. It was recorded in Emporia, Ks. I will continue to build the article. Note however, that I will not contribute my limited professional time, if the time which I devote is wasted unnecessarily. Thank you. Ray Oliver, Esq. Ray Oliver, Esq. 19:45, 13 June 2011 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by RAYOLIVERESQ (talkcontribs)

Mr. Oliver, we take especial care with articles about living persons (commonly referred to as "BLPs") due to the fact that Wikipedia can cause real harm to people when false or misleading information is put on their articles. Because we're well aware of this, all information in an article about a living person must be reliably sourced. Taking a brief look at the userfied article, I do not see that this is the case, and I urge you to add some sources to the article before you seek to make it a live version. Cheers. lifebaka++ 22:47, 13 June 2011 (UTC)

Ray Oliver: I will include hyper links to all referenced facts. It is my training and practice to use primary sources. The fact of Ms. Kenton's incestuous relationship with her father, jazz great Stan Kenton is described by Ms. Kenton in her autobiography entitled Love Affair. This Kenton autobiography was published in 2010 by Random House. Readers and the Wiki editorial staff can be assured that that this article's content will be factually correct. Thank you for your courtesy. Ray Oliver 68.46.131.43 (talk) 11:57, 17 June 2011 (UTC)

Copyright problems

Dear John,

This has reference to the deletion of articles for movies Us-Paar and Trimurti (1974 film). The reasons cited for their deletion was (G12: Unambiguous copyright infringement of IMDB). There are articles for many other movies which do violate this copyright infringement and still continue on the Wikipedia database, plot of film Jeevan Jyoti (1976 film) for instance. Also please refer the IMDB site (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0392187/) for this film. Are the articles for films (Us-Paar and Trimurti (1974 film)) were deleted since they were written by a novice?

Regards, Charan Charan s05 (talk) 10:25, 17 June 2011 (UTC)

No, they were deleted because they were copyright violations, which could give Wikipedia serious legal problems. You must not copy material into Wikipedia - see Wikipedia:Copy-paste. In the case of Jeevan Jyoti (1976 film) there was a previous version of the article which did not violate copyright, and I have reverted to that. Thank you for pointing it out: if you find any other articles containing copied material, please tag them with {{db-copyvio}}, or report them. JohnCD (talk) 10:45, 17 June 2011 (UTC)

International Society for Computational Biology Student Council

Hi would you mind re-instating the above page? We are still in the process of creating this page and I am happy to mention its notability, i.e. the leading Student Organization in the field of computational biology.

86.133.35.167 (talk) 09:06, 19 June 2011 (UTC)

I have userfied the page - moved it to a user sub-page - at User:Manuelcorpas/International Society for Computational Biology Student Council where you can work on it. (Manuelcorpas is the user who created it - if that is you, please log in before leaving messages like this, it makes it much easier to keep track). Establishing notability is not just a matter of claiming to be a leading organization - what is needed is references to show significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources. The test is, have people not connected with the organization thought it important enough to write significant comment on? See WP:Notability (organizations and companies) and WP:FAQ/Organizations for more detail. We find that student organizations are not often able to establish independent notability - it may be better to cover the Student Council by a paragraph in the main International Society for Computational Biology article. JohnCD (talk) 21:32, 19 June 2011 (UTC)
Thanks very much John for the clear explanation. We do have quite a few references in leading journals, mainly related to the yearly symposium that we organize. I will work on the article and if you don't mind I would like to contend that it is not deleted. Regards, Manuelcorpas (talk) 08:43, 20 June 2011 (UTC)

Reading Cloggies

This page was deleted without reference to the original creators by someone from Ireland and then someone from the USA. Suddenly it was gone. Requests for an email copy have been ignored. I haven't got time to waste on all this - adding text then having it deleted - as per other pages of mine - so the deletion stands without resolving why it was deleted. About deleted article "Miodrag Milošević" - your thoughts?

Hi JohnCD!
noq - who first tagged the article, and a good tag it was - had a little discussion about this with me here. I think there's still an article there, but about the Yugoslavian filmmaker born in 1929. I'm fully aware that deletion review is that-away →, but before that - your thoughts about this?
--Shirt58 (talk) 14:12, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

By all means have a go at it if you think he's notable - I have userfied it for you to User:Shirt58/Miodrag Milošević. I didn't realise you had changed the subject completely: what I saw was that it appeared from the originator's name to be autobiography, and the only source was an IMDb reference that gave "page not found". (Userfying it has mucked up the IMDb link, but it didn't work even in the original article). JohnCD (talk) 14:52, 21 June 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for that, JohnCD! Darn, I knew I should have added a "this user knows nothing about the Cinema of post-WWII Yugoslavia" user box to my user page. My plans for the weekend have been altered, and I shall be spending a few hours at the library. Last time I was there, it was about this guy. Sure, I could read his scandalous novel... just as long as I had a letter from the Head of Department and my PhD supervisor allowing me access to the climate controlled rooms the book was stored in. I thought of mentioning that I was interested in it for a Wikipedia article, but that would have been the same as admitting that before I shape-changed into human form, I had horns, a long tail and cloven feet... --Shirt58 (talk) 11:53, 22 June 2011 (UTC)
I see the 14-year-old "politician/businessman" has returned, already been speedied once, and I have just tagged him A7 again. If he keeps at it the title may get salted, but you can ask for that to be undone when yours is ready. JohnCD (talk) 21:06, 23 June 2011 (UTC)

I doubt if this is notable in Wikipedia terms - explanation on your talk page. JohnCD (talk) 18:03, 23 June 2011 (UTC)

Just so I understand you properly John - this article, about a brand new album - can not be A7ed CSD, or even A9ed cos theres an article about the singer - so would you prod this article?

It certainly is not speediable under A7 or A9; the test it has to pass is WP:NALBUMS. The sources quoted are pretty thin, but there are sources, it's been released (just), and there is more than a track listing, there are claims about charts... If you PROD it, the PROD would probably be removed (as is quite proper) and you would have to go to AfD, where I wouldn't like to guess what would happen. My advice would be, don't bother in this case. There are much worse album and song articles about. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 21:53, 23 June 2011 (UTC)

Early Discovery of Atlantic Islands

Dear Sir: The core of the articles dates from the publication of the SunGod book in 2002. This is 9 years ago. Our book was well received, and the conclusions are not disputed in the literature. It is that simple. For that reason I cannot give "secondary sourcing". - If the archaeological community does not react in this case, it is their responsibility, not mine.--Dr. R.M. de Jonge (talk) 16:05, 24 June 2011 (UTC)

Whatever the reason, one of our core policies is WP:No original research: "If no reliable third-party sources can be found on a topic, Wikipedia should not have an article about it." JohnCD (talk) 16:52, 24 June 2011 (UTC)

70.137.130.173

Thank you for your block on this IP address. I wish to draw your attention that almost none of their contributions have been constructive (having been the fixer for the Hell's Kitchen articles) and have already recieved 2 blocks for Vandalism. I would like to know at what point we will cut our losses with this IP address as they resume their vandalism almost as soon as their block expires. The user behind this DSL line appears to have been fairly stable for the better part of this month. Thanks Hasteur (talk) 16:27, 24 June 2011 (UTC)

We don't normally like to block IPs for long periods, the exception being where they are known to be static addresses for schools or colleges: I know this one has been hammering at the same article for a couple of weeks but it might, for instance, be in a public library. If it comes back on the same theme, it might get a month next time. Another approach, if it is focussed on a few articles, would be to ask at WP:RFPP for them to be semi-protected. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 16:57, 24 June 2011 (UTC)
Thank you, but over half of the IP editors to these articles are actually providing good content so I'm very loath tho request a semi on it for the actions of one editor. Hasteur (talk) 17:37, 24 June 2011 (UTC)
Ah, OK, we'll just have to play whack-a-mole. If these continue to be the only edits from this IP, the block lengths can be increased. JohnCD (talk) 15:36, 26 June 2011 (UTC)

A list of HIV-positive people -what are the intentions of this article?

Dear John,

The list of HIV people (alive or deceased), a list of people linked to criminal transmission of HIV (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_HIV-positive_people), is prejudicial to HIV prevention, perpetuates stigma and discrimination and is against human rights. By having a list, HIV it is not treated as a normal condition that people get but as something that is very abominable. Therefore stigma and discrimination can block prevention and effective responses to HIV and have a negative impact on people living with HIV.

Can you tell us what was the purpose of this list? What the authors intend with a list of this kind?

The only "intention" of the article is to provide encyclopedic information. Wikipedia has many lists of people in different categories - if you click here you will see just some of the others. No moral or any other judgement is intended or implied. JohnCD (talk) 17:33, 25 June 2011 (UTC)

Charleene Rena

Hello John,

Can't understand why you deleted my article on singer Charleene Rena. The song she worked on with Rudenko , "Everybody" was a UK Top 20 hit and number 2 dance hit and ahit intenational. The songs video that has had over 20 Million views and lead her to tour internationally. she has been written about in FHM, has over 60 pages come up on a Google search. Why did you delete it? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Annaleej9 (talkcontribs) 22:31, 25 June 2011 (UTC)

"Working on her first album" does not sound as though her career has (yet) got far enough to meet WP:MUSICBIO. The only thing that might count is "Everybody", but if she only appeared in it, that's not enough. The Youtube entry for Rudenko's "Everybody" does not credit her, and her own Youtube songs only have a few thousand views. JohnCD (talk) 10:18, 26 June 2011 (UTC)

hi John, Nicholas Jouault is my uncle, and i have permission to use his text. MarcusLeDain (talk) 14:14, 26 June 2011 (UTC)MarcusLeDain

It is not enough to assert permission - you have to organise a formal release by the copyright holder as explained on your talk page and at WP:DCM. In any case, I do not think that as it stands this material is suitable for Wikipedia: read WP:NOTDIR #2 "Genealogical entries" and WP:Notability. More advice on your talk page soon. Hi John,

Thank you I understand.

I have been in contact with the owner of that page,

Mr Nicholas Jouault- http://www.societe-jersiaise.org/resources/contact/mr-nick-jouault.html flash@itl.net. and have emailed him http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jouault as an entry point. --MarcusLeDain (talk) 19:00, 27 June 2011 (UTC)Marcus

OK, but as I explained above and on your talk page, even if copyright is sorted out the material is not suitable for Wikipedia as it is, unless notability is established. Also, it is "original research". JohnCD (talk) 07:26, 28 June 2011 (UTC)

I just want to say thanks for spacing out my post on User talk:Dr.makendranc. I was fixing it when I received an edit conflict notice, and I saw that you had already fixed it. Cheers! SwisterTwister talk 07:20, 28 June 2011 (UTC)

DJ Abrantee wikiepedia

Hi JohnCD,

Many thanks for your mail. We wrote to the administrator as advised but not heard anything back. We urgently need the material or page reinstated. Please can you help to do this as a matter of urgency. The orginal page was deleted but we spent time developing the new page with sources, references and links to validate the stories. The profile of the DJ Abrantee is being reviewed daily in the press and he has contributed a lot to the music industry and a pioneer of new initiatives and its unfair that the artical has been. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Giverandnotataker (talkcontribs) 10:12, 28 June 2011 (UTC)

Ranskin.

Hello there, i have noticed that you deleted the page 'Ranskin' Although i did not create this page, i find it extremely offensive that you would delete it and call it a hoax. Ranskin is a very real religion, (I for one am a follower) and i know other people who put their faith in Ranskin have been very outraged at the deletion of this wikipedia page. Imagine if you deleted a page about Christianity? There would be an uproar! I pray that you un-delete this page as it means a lot to the people of Ranskin. Thank you for your time, may your soul be pure. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alicelucyskins (talkcontribs) 07:42, 29 June 2011 (UTC)

In order to have a Wikipedia article a religion, or anything else, has to be notable, which means showing "significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources." Christianity passes that test; Ranskin doesn't. More explanation at Wikipedia is not for things made up one day. JohnCD (talk) 09:40, 29 June 2011 (UTC)

Don't revert

I have reversed your move of this template, which has not been discussed and was breaking a number of articles. If you think it should be moved, please make a proposal on the talk page - you can use {{Requested move}} if you like - and do not move it again unless there is a consensus to do so. JohnCD (talk) 11:44, 30 June 2011 (UTC)

You didn't have to revert it. If you read Template talk:Turkey–Kurdistan Workers Party conflict, you will understand. Formerly this template was Template:Turkey-PKK conflict. One user changed name and contents without consensus. Now that user accepts our oppositions. Thank you. Takabeg (talk) 11:48, 30 June 2011 (UTC)
I'll look at this later today. What you did caused problems, because when you moved it and tagged the old one for deletion, that put all the 20+ articles that transclude it into the queue for speedy deletion. Any change needs to be co-ordinated with its use in articles. JohnCD (talk) 14:09, 30 June 2011 (UTC)

Because of (for example):

Interviewer: With which aims? Autonomy? A federal system? Independence?
Abdullah Öcalan: What is needed for a contemporary man. What is true for all peoples is also true for us. A system comparable to what we see in Europe, a democratic federal system. The form is not a problem, if the will is there. The most important thing is to acknowledge the Kurdish identity.

Replied on your talk page. JohnCD (talk) 09:45, 1 July 2011 (UTC)

I apologise for my delay in replying. If you have consensus to change the name of this template, by all means do, but it is transcluded by a large number of articles - see Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:Kurdish_independence_movement - and you need (a) to review these to be sure that your revised title is still appropriate for them , and (b) to delete the template from the article if it is no longer appropriate, or alter the article to include the new title if it is. The problem when you moved it last time was that, when the old title was tagged for deletion, all the articles that transcluded it were added to CAT:CSD, the list of articles for speedy deletion, and that was what alarmed me. I guess that would have ceased to be a problem once the old template was actually deleted, but that would still leave a redlink in the articles. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 21:53, 1 July 2011 (UTC)

Thank you. Most of article included in this template is irrelevant with independence movement and this template was added to various irrelevant articles. Today I'll improve them. See you. Takabeg (talk) 21:58, 1 July 2011 (UTC)

Heather Vesey

It's on Commons too - http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Heather_Vesey_with_a_fan.jpg. I've no idea how Commons goes about such stuff, but I presume they have a way to deal with unused hoax images of non-notable people - do you have any idea? -- Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 13:52, 4 July 2011 (UTC)

I did get rid of a Commons picture of Avinash Patra by nominating it for deletion (quite a simple process - there is a link under "Toolbox" at the left) with the justification "used only by serial sockpuppetteer and self-promoter" with links to his WP site ban and SPI case. Not that it did much good, he just uploaded another, and I suspect the same would happen here. I'd be inclined not to bother unless HV becomes as persistent a nuisance as AP. JohnCD (talk) 14:07, 4 July 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, you're probably right - as long as we keep spotting and removing the hoax articles, we should be fine. Cheers -- Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 17:04, 4 July 2011 (UTC)
Actually, on second thought, I've nominated it for deletion - for the learning experience, at least -- Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 17:07, 4 July 2011 (UTC)
It won't do any harm. There's Commons:File:Heather_Vesey_with_a_fan.jpg as well. It looks as if there are some permissions problems. You could perhaps add to the nomination reason a link to the deletion log, http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Heather_Vesey&action=edit&redlink=1, with a note "still coming under variant titles", to show them it's not a one-off problem. 5grs References Fix

Thanks for your help on 5grs page. I have added a couple of references from different magazines, could you please check and see whether it meets the notably requirements for now? That's better (though the first reference is a deadlink). I've taken off the "primarysources" tag. Anything more you can find would be good - I'm not sure this would survive a challenge at AfD against the standard of WP:BAND, but it's certainly good enough to escape speedy deletion. Sorry, I can't restore the page because it was copyright material, but you can see it at http://www.usadojo.com/biographies/rick-tucci.htm. The title has been protected against creation because the copyright stuff was inserted again and again: what you should do is, make a draft in your user space - see Help:Userspace draft for how to do that - and then approach user Hersfold (talk), the admin who protected it, give him a link to your draft and ask for permission to post it. Read WP:Your first article carefully, and make sure you include references showing significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources. JohnCD (talk) 14:43, 6 July 2011 (UTC)

Dear JohnCD,

Landroverfan here. Many thanks for your comments on the PANGOLIN page, which are all fully acknowledged and accepted. The truth is that I have published this a little early. I am working on a full version of the page now.... with the necessary links; with the info gaps filled in and with the necessary references etc.

I note that the vehicle is not yet on the OVIK site and I have contacted them to try to clarify why; I have received a provisional response sayong that until PSNI allows them to publicise PANGOLIN there will be no official mention on their website and no press release etc.

Please bare with me as this will be a fully worked-up page once all the available info is collated.

Re: speedy

I explained on the article's talkpage why it's a G4. The user who's repeatedly re-creating this article is using different titles to try to avoid scrutiny. Roscelese (talkcontribs) 17:46, 11 July 2011 (UTC)

OK, I see it now, zapped. If you are posting a G4 where the previous title was different, it helps to link it in the speedy tag, like {{db-repost|Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Quran miracle}}, then a link to the previous AfD is available from the speedy template. Did you not see the note I left on your talk page? The article has not been deleted, but moved into your user space at User:Landroverfan/PANGOLIN armoured Land Rover where you can develop it. Once you can cite reliable sources to verify what it says, it can be moved back. I can't give you an absolute assurance that it would not be deleted, but provided it is properly sourced I see no reason why it should be. See WP:No original research for why things you have personal knowledge of, but can't cite a reliable source for, are not suitable for Wikipedia. JohnCD (talk) 19:23, 11 July 2011 (UTC)

Username change vs COI

Having read the articles you suggested, I have concluded that the best course of action would be to change the username AND to place the article within a Project - the Organizations Project - in hopes that someone will find interest in writing the article. I would appreciate it if you would read the unpublished article and giving me some indication of where there is puffery or unverified information. With regard to notoriety and the "Wikipedia is not here to tell the world about your noble cause" article, I don't think I've pushed any of those boundaries. It would be helpful if you (or someone else) could point out where I have transgressed. I understand that this is quite an imposition on you in terms of time, but I really could use a little constructive criticism that pertains directly to what I've written. And yes, I was wrong to say that I was writing for the organization in my comments on my talkpage. That distinction was well pointed out. Thank you so much for your assistance.

deleted page.

why did you delete my page of Sarah Crosbie? — Preceding unsigned comment added by InbarxD (talkcontribs) 21:04, 13 July 2011 (UTC)

Because it did not give any indication why she was important or significant enough to have an article in an encyclopedia. See WP:Your first article, particularly the first two paragraphs of the section "Things to avoid." This isn't a place to write about your friends, like Facebook or Myspace: it's a project to build an encyclopedia, so it's selective about subjects for articles. Speedy deletion of Vasanavikriti

I thought seeing a Red link on that someone might create an article rather than a loop. The page comes to the same page if I click. Also there is another reason for me to nominate it for SD. In ml.wiki there are already article for both ml:Vasanavikriti and ml:Vengayil_Kunhiraman_Nayanar. While creating the new article ml:Vasanavikriti in ml.wiki, user have given the interwiki as en:Vasanavikriti which was a duplicate. This was roll backed by me. If you think that is correct, please keep it. --Rameshng (talk) 17:35, 14 July 2011 (UTC)

The best outcome would be if someone could translate the ml: article for the story, assuming there are enough references to establish notability. Until then, you have a point that a red-link would encourage that; but on the other hand, anyone searching for "Vasanavikriti" would find nothing, whereas now they are taken to the author's page. (I have de-linked the reference there, because there is no point having a circular redirect). Not many people search for it, but some do: the page was accessed 120 times in the first six months of this year. While the redirect is there, I think an interwiki link from :ml would work, anyone clicking it in :ml would be taken via the redirect to the author's article here; but there wouldn't be an inter-wiki link the other way.
Anyway, this does not come under either of the two reasons to speedy-delete a redirect; if you like, by all means take it to WP:Redirects for discussion. Looking at WP:REDIRECT#DELETE, I think you have a case under #10. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 21:33, 14 July 2011 (UTC)
Anyway I have translated the article Vasanavikriti from ml.wiki. So i think that is resolved. Thanks for showing me the directions --Rameshng (talk) 03:54, 15 July 2011 (UTC)
Good. I have restored the link to it from the author's article. JohnCD (talk) 09:44, 15 July 2011 (UTC)

Contested deletion

26rags (talk) 19:08, 14 July 2011 (UTC)You have recently deleted a page created by me titled "Hopesh dangal" and I would like to contest this deletion. Hopesh Dangal is an established rapper in the Indian state of Bihar and is signed with Raju Bhai Music Reckords in Patna. His talent is being marketed through online means like Facebook and Twitter and very soon Youtube.

Facebook link - http://en-gb.facebook.com/people/Hopesh-Dangal/100001337297019 Twitter link - http://twitter.com/#!/Hopp_Dogg

His popularity on his online pages speaks for itself and he is slowly making a name for himself all over India.

I would like to request you to kindly allow me to make any changes that you deem necessary for the article to be in accordance with Wikipedia rules and practices. Having a wikipedia page would greatly help in the marketing of his talents.

Regards

26rags

Sorry, but Wikipedia is not here to help marketing people who are making a name for themselves, and being on Facebook/Twitter/Youtube is not enough for an article. The notability requirement is to show significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources, and for musical performers the standard is explained at WP:MUSICBIO. Laserium page deleted erroneously

Greetings, My name is Scott Anderson and I am attempting to discover why Laserium is not relevant within wikipedia. I suppose i need to see why IMAX has a visible presence on wikipedia, yet Laserium cannot? or if considered separate from the company that invented it, Laserium is known worldwide in an almost generic sense for high-quality laser entertainment, the first mainstream laser entertainment in the early 1970's. Can you advise on how i can do justice to a science center and planetarium phenomenon known all over the world? Thanks very much, Scott Anderson ---- — Preceding unsigned comment added by Laserium2011 (talkcontribs) 16:34, 15 July 2011 (UTC)

The short answer is that what you wrote was an advertisement, full of "peacock terms" and PR-speak: "unique entertainment art-form... enchanting visual piece... advanced laser projector... cutting-edge laser entertainment... " Wikipedia is not for promotion of any kind, and anything like that is speedily deleted. Also, your username indicates a WP:Conflict of interest. (Almost) any picture is copyright, and can only be reproduced with the permission of the copyright holder. The copyright in a photograph usually belongs to the person who took it. You could only upload a photograph of Caroline Corr to Commons if you took it, or if the person who took it agrees - see Commons:Special:UploadWizard. JohnCD (talk) 10:35, 17 July 2011 (UTC)

How to add references?

Hi John, Thank you for reinstating The Poetess. How do you add the references to The Poetess article page? Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ogpoetess (talkcontribs) 20:59, 17 July 2011 (UTC)

See WP:Your first article, the sections "Gathering references" and (lower down) "Entering references", and for more detail WP:CITE. JohnCD (talk) 21:24, 17 July 2011 (UTC)

The Poetess deletion

HI John, I saw that The Poetess was back up earlier after our correspondence and now it is deleted again even after I've added references. Please advise. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ogpoetess (talkcontribs) 02:02, 18 July 2011 (UTC)

The Poetess has not been deleted, but it has been nominated under the WP:Articles for deletion process. That starts a debate, lasting normally seven days, at the end of which an uninvolved adminstrator will decide what to do (based on the arguments presented, not on a count of heads). What you should do is, add references, as I see you have though I do not have time today to check them, and then add a note at the deletion debate to say that you have. Other people contributing to the debate will look at the article and see them. If you are The Poetess, it would be well to say so: there are guidelines about editing with a WP:Conflict of interest, but the most important thing is to declare your interest. IPE Global.

I'm not sure why this doesn't meet the standards of being "noteworthy".The said organization has been involved with a number of projects in the development sector across the globe and has been able to aid in the development of sectors like Health ,Education ,Urban Development as well as rural development. The projects undertaken have brought changes in the development of the area as well as the people of the region.Kindly take a look at it and undelete the page . — Preceding unsigned comment added by Preethi31 (talkcontribs) 08:05, 18 July 2011 (UTC)

The term is WP:Notability, see also WP:CORP, and showing it requires showing significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources. The references in your article were only a report that someone had invested in your firm, and two long documents where the only mention was that your firm had acted as consultants. That is not enough. The test is, have people unconnected with the subject thought it important enough to write substantial comment about? Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a business listing directory; many worthy companies and organizations do not qualify for an article. See WP:FAQ/Organizations for more advice.
