::* Length, date and hook and ALT1 hook verified. I prefer ALT1. I struggled with the use of "town" in ALT1. Nameless is an unincorporated community, which may be administered by a township, and a township can mean municipality, and municipality can refer to a town. So, I think town is OK. -- Suntag <b><big><font color="#FF8C00">☼</font></big></b> 05:45, 28 November 2008 (UTC) |

This page is for nominations to appear in the "Did you know" section (reproduced on the right) on the Main Page.
Instructions
Using a DYK suggestion string (see below examples), list new suggestions in the candidate entries section below under the date the article was created or the expansion began (not the date you submit it here), with the newest dates at the top. Any user may nominate a DYK suggestion; self-nominations are permitted and encouraged. Thanks for participating and please remember to check back for comments on your nomination.
DYK criteria
Unofficial criteria: LaPella's unwritten rules
- DYK evaluation includes:
- Length - The Article should contain at least 1,500 characters in main body text (ignoring infoboxes, categories, references, lists, and tables). This is a mandatory minimum; in practice, articles having more than 1,500 characters of prose still may be rejected as too short, at the discretion of the selecting administrators.
- Verification - The DYK hook fact in the article needs an inline cite at the end of the sentence and the article in general should use inline, cited sources.
- Date - The new article should be no more than five days old and the expanded article should be expanded at least fivefold with new text within the last five days.
- Length
- DYK qualifying characters: To count the number of characters in a piece of text, you will need to use a JavaScript extension like User:Dr pda/prosesize.js (instructions on the talk page), a free website like this, or an external software program that has a character-counting feature. For example, if you are using Microsoft Word, select the text from the article page (or, in the case of "Did you know" nominations, this Talk page) – not the edit page containing Wikitext – then copy and paste it into a blank document. Click "Tools" ("Review" in Office 2007), then "Word Count", and note the "Characters (with spaces)" figure. Other word processing programs may have a similar feature. For Mac users, Apple has a Word counter widget available for Mac OS X 10.4 or later. Note: The character counts indicated on "Revision history" pages are not accurate for DYK purposes as they include categories, infoboxes and similar text in articles, and comments and signatures in hooks on this page.
- Lists: Proposed lists need 1,500+ characters of prose text. The listed items themselves are not counted as part the the 1,500 DYK qualifying characters
- Verification
- Suggested facts (the 'hook') should be:
- interesting to draw in a variety of readers,
- short and concise (fewer than about 200 characters, including spaces),
- neutral,
- definite facts that are mentioned in the article, and
- always cited in the article with an inline citation.
- Please note that hooks are subject without notice to copyediting as they move to the main page. The nature of the DYK process makes it impractical to consult users over every such edit. In particular, hooks will be shortened if they are deemed too long: the 200-character limit is an outside limit not a recommended length. Also, watch the suggestions page to ensure that no issues have been raised about your hook, because if you do not respond to issues raised your hook may not be featured at all.
- Articles on living individuals must be carefully checked to ensure that no unsourced or poorly sourced negative material is included. Articles and hooks which focus unduly on negative aspects of living individuals should be avoided.Articles on living individuals must be carefully checked to ensure that no unsourced or poorly sourced negative material is included. - The article is currently at an AfD, so we'd have to wait until the AfD is closed before proceeding. Also, the hook needs to contain the article link in bold font. Nsk92 (talk) 21:00, 26 November 2008 (UTC)

- ... that the crew of the Royal Navy ship of the line HMS Edgar, a veteran of three naval battles, mutinied in 1808, but backed down under the threat of musket fire from the ship's marines?

- Self-nom 5x expansion over the last two days. I prefer either the first or third hook. Otto4711 (talk) 21:34, 27 November 2008 (UTC)

- Why "near-drowned" and not "drowned"? Yomanganitalk 12:29, 27 November 2008 (UTC)
- According to our article on drowning, drowned people are dead and can't be resuscitated. Near drowning, according to our article, "is the survival of a drowning event involving unconsciousness or water inhalation". But either variant is all right with me. Sandstein 13:10, 27 November 2008 (UTC)

- Date and length of the article verified, off-line ref accepted per WP:AGF, interesting hook. A recommendation to the nominator: the subject is almost 100 years old (will be 100 old in a little more than a month), so you may want to add some more recent references confirming that he is still alive. There are actually quite a few articles about him now in the Italian press, preparing to celebrate his 100's birthday (e.g. [1]), and it may be a good idea to add a few of them to the article. The article contains a number of photographs of Sohan Qadri of questionable origin, for the years 1953, 1966, 1967, 1969, 1973. It seems rather unlikely that User:Payaluttam is the creator and copyright holder of these pictures, unless User:Payaluttam and Sohan Qadri are the same person. Either way, unsuitable for the going to the main page. Nsk92 (talk) 16:11, 26 November 2008 (UTC)
- This article is full of paintings by Sohan Qadri which Payaluttam uploaded with the same licenses. I suspect (1) the wrong licenses are used, or (2) this article is nicely decorated with blatant copyright violations, or (3) Sohan Qadri and Payaluttam are the same person, violating WP:AUTO. --74.14.20.203 (talk) 15:50, 26 November 2008 (UTC)
- Those seem like valid reasons not to take a chance on featuring the image on the Main Page. I will send a note to Payaluttam asking him to verify the copyright status of teh images. But, all that said, Payaluttam has put a tremendous effort into building what looks to me like a solid, well-sourced article about a pretty fascinating character. Someone else should decide since I nominated the article, but I'd say ding the picture but not the hook. The quote in the hook is cited to a mainstream art publication, and the person making the comment (F.N. Souza) is himself a very well-known and respected Indian artist.Cbl62 (talk) 02:06, 27 November 2008 (UTC)
- Payaluttam responded to my question on his talk page. He says he is writing the article for a New York gallery, Sundaramtagore. He states that the gallery does own the copyright on the images. While that may solve the copyright issue, it does suggest that the author has a financial interest in promoting Qadri's work. Even though I think the article is quite good, I think we probably ought not to feature it on the Main Page, as it may be construed as an advertisement for the author/gallery. Oh well. Cbl62 (talk) 05:50, 27 November 2008 (UTC)
- Regarding the copyright issue, if the gallery indeed owns the copyrights to these photos, there is a specific process to follow. I am not an expert on our copyright plicy, but my understanding is that the gallery would either have to post a notice on its own website explicitly releasing the copyright to these photos or to contact WMF directly with this information. The licence files for the images would have to be modified too. Nsk92 (talk) 13:11, 27 November 2008 (UTC)

- The problem here I think is whether the word Nigatsu (February) in my Japanese source is lunar or gregorian. - The subject of the article has questionable notability in terms of WP:BIO, a possible AfD candidate. Of the two footnotes one does not mention him and the other is a short entry from some sort of SS personell list. All of the information in the article comes from this personell list entry. Nsk92 (talk) 12:52, 23 November 2008 (UTC)
- more refs added Jim Sweeney (talk) 09:10, 24 November 2008 (UTC)
- Maybe one of the more experienced DYK regulars should take a look at this, but I still have several problems with this entry. There are 4 footnotes in the article, but none of them are books, magazine, journal or newspaper articles or any other media that usually qualifies as "published". Of the 4 footnotes given only three mention the subject by name. Of these three one[2] gives only a brief mention and two others[3][4] appear to be sites that collect all personell records of SS personell. This does not seem to me to qualify as in-depth coverage of the type that WP:BIO has in mind, but more in the nature of a comprehesive directory listing. Moreover, both of these personell records sites appear to be run by volunteer history enthusiasts, and I am not sure that they qualify as reliable sources under WP:V and WP:RS. The last reference (which does not mention the subject by name) casts further notability doubts here in its very first sentence:"The 38.SS, although a very obscure formation that never achieved anything near full division status, did actually see some combat, although nearly all written accounts of the division don't seem to mention this." When I see "very obscure" in the lead sentence, it does not exactly sound notable. I also have a more general concern about suitability of this entry for the main page DYK section. We are talking here about a mid-level Nazi military officer (who finished the war at the rank equivalent to Lieutenant Colonel) of the Waffen SS, the most notorious and infamous part of the Nazi war machine, that was responsible for tremendous atrocities, war crimes and crimes against humanity and that was condemned at the Nuremberg trials as a criminal organization. The hook provides information about this officer having received a Nazi military decoration. I don't know how many people will find that bit of information interesting, but I am fairly sure that a great many people will find what looks like an entry commending this SS officer's achievements quite offensive. I don't think this is suitable for the DYK section of the main page. Nsk92 (talk) 18:56, 26 November 2008 (UTC)
- I notice there is an offline reference at the bottom - a book. Maybe inline citations for the book are all that's needed? Secondly, I'm not sure the hook is exactly 'commending' Schmidt for his actions, it is just stating that he was awarded a medal - for a pretty standard battalion movement by the sounds of it. The article doesn't glorify him in any particular way, and neither mention any atrocities in unacceptable detail. \ / (⁂) 20:54, 26 November 2008 (UTC)
- Intially, there was also another item listed as a "general reference" at the bottom, a book by Berger. However, another user looked it up, found that the book did not mention Schmidt, and removed it[5]. This leads me to believe that Fellgiebel's book is also just a general reference about SS, rather than a reference that has anything to do with Schmidt specifically. Regarding the other point, the hook, in effect, says, that Schmidt was a brave soldier and got an award for it. While that is not exactly glorification, it is certainly a positive hook that generally commends somebody for being a brave soldier. If we were talking about an ordinary military officer, even an officer of Wehrmacht, that would be fine. But in this case we are talking about an officer of Waffen SS, a criminal military organization, that was systematically involved in various atrocities against the civilian population in Russia, Ukraine, Poland, and other European countries, and that was also responsible for the worst Nazi war crimes. It is quite possible and even likely that Schmidt and his unit were involved in such crimes. Did his bravery involve burning down some villages in Rissia and Ukraine? The article does not say anything about it, but it certainly is a relevant piece of information to know for evaluating the overall balance of the article. Moreover, in Schmidt's case, he joined SS rather early, in 1935, which means that he was a committed Nazi from get-go. With an article about an SS officer, I would want to see a much better established case for notability, a much more complete information about his doings, and a less flattering hook, if it were to go to the main page. Nsk92 (talk) 22:53, 26 November 2008 (UTC)
- / (outdent) - Length (1,797 DYK characters) and date (22 November 2008) verified. The hook wording is fine. However, the references appear to not be Wikipedia reliable sources and/or do not support the information posted to the article. This could be resolved via an explaination and reply from article creator Jim Sweeney. As for the mark, an admin judgment issue was raise as to whether Wikipedia should put SS Nazi articles on the Main Page. Actual posting to the Main Page is a decision made by an admin in exercising admin judgment under the Wikipedia:Administrators policy, not DYK. DYK Main Page content decisions are best addressed at Wikipedia talk:Did you know, which is monitored by the admins who post to the Main Page. -- Suntag ☼ 17:14, 27 November 2008 (UTC)
- I have added the reference from the book quoted into the text (Elite of the Third Reich By Walther-Peer Fellgiebel) which covers the two awards the Knights Cross of the Iron Cross and the 2nd award of the Oakleaves. There have been other Waffen SS members in the DKY section Henri Joseph Fenet and Eugene Vaulot in recent weeks, so I can see no problem with the subject matter. Jim Sweeney (talk) 17:36, 27 November 2008 (UTC)
- I don't read German, so I'm being more of a referee here. Nsk92 states that, other than Fellgiebel, the four footnotes in the article are not books, magazine, journal or newspaper articles. DYKs concern here would be that not enought of the 1,500 DYK characters come from Wikipedia reliable sources. If the sources are blogs and websites, then those sources should have a page that allows Wikipedia to confirm that they are "third-party, published sources with a reputation for fact-checking and accuracy"[6] or have been evaluated by Wikipedia:Reliable_sources/Noticeboard. Nsk92 also appears to assert that the cited sources do not support the content listed in the article. DYKs concern would be that OR was needed to reach novel conclusions that are not in any of the sources and that too much of the article contains such novel conclusions. Please address these. Thanks. -- Suntag ☼ 18:20, 27 November 2008 (UTC)

- As far as I can tell, that information deserved to be removed, which means it shouldn't have been there in the first place, which in turn means that the original 5x expansion was about 4x good material and 1x bad material, or the original expansion was not really appropriate. I don't know what the official rules are, but I don't think it should count as 5x expansion like this, and if it's not 5x expansion then it doesn't qualify. - I don't edit those kinds of articles so I'm not too familiar with the standards, but in the diff that Art LaPella linked to above, the removing editor provided a link to a standards sheet that I assume explains why a crew section is not meant to be included. As for other articles that have it, Other stuff exists explains our guidelines on that sort of thing. —Politizer talk/contribs 19:15, 27 November 2008 (UTC)

- Although hooks under the wrong date aren't policed very well, #Instructions specifies "... within the last five days", so the clock starts when a new article or its expansion begins, not days (or years) later when the author still claims to be working on it. So "Articles created/expanded on November 21" has to mean "... beginning on November 21". However, you aren't out of time: see "Unwritten" Rule D7. Art LaPella (talk) 20:47, 27 November 2008 (UTC)

- I began a new thread here. Also, I completed expansion on the 22nd, but this was moved to the 21st, when I started. Can this be moved back up a day where it was, to allow 24 hours for responses there? iMatthew 19:25, 27 November 2008 (UTC)
- Well why did the section need to be removed. There is a section on the Crew in Degrassi: The Next Generation (season 1) and all other Degrassi seasons 1-7. All of which are featured and haven't been removed. Can I re-add it? iMatthew 19:06, 27 November 2008 (UTC)
Also, it is quickly expiring. —Politizer talk/contribs 18:22, 27 November 2008 (UTC)
- Yup, he removed a section. Please don't tell me that makes it ineligible to be used ;( iMatthew 14:30, 27 November 2008 (UTC)
- (outdent) Nevermind, I got it done just know. The article is back up to 5x expansion. Isn't it? iMatthew 00:31, 28 November 2008 (UTC)
- 13000 bytes now, so that's 5x when compared to 2240 bytes on the 17th. Gary King (talk) 00:36, 28 November 2008 (UTC)
- This hook is listed under "Articles created/expanded on November 21." Expansion from 6,515 DYK characters November 19th[7] to 12,848 DYK characters[8] is a 2x expansion. However, a 5x expansion needed. -- Suntag ☼ 05:03, 28 November 2008 (UTC)
