Vivaldi is a freeware web browser developed by Vivaldi Technologies, a company founded by former co-founder and CEO of Opera, Jon Stephenson von Tetzchner.[2] The project's slogan is "A new browser for our friends",[3] and the browser is aimed at hardcore technologists, heavy internet users, and previous Opera browser users disgruntled by Opera's transition from the Presto engine to Blink, which removed many popular features.[2] The web browser, which is currently available for Windows, OS X, and Linux, was downloaded 500,000 times in the first ten days of availability.[4]
History
Vivaldi began as a virtual community website that replaced My Opera, which was shut down by Opera in March, 2014.[5] Jon Stephenson von Tetzchner was angered by this decision, because he believed that this community helped make the Opera browser what it was. Tetzchner launched the Vivaldi Community to make up for My Opera's closure. It is a virtual community focused on providing registered users with a discussion forum, blogging service, and numerous other useful web services. On January 27, 2015 Vivaldi Technologies launched the Vivaldi web browser.[6][7]
Features
Vivaldi has a minimalistic interface that uses basic icons and fonts. The browser's color scheme is based on the background and the elements of the web page being visited.[8] It uses web technologies including HTML5, Node.js, ReactJS, and the Blink layout engine.[1] The developers have future plans for extensions but they are yet to be implemented.[8]
